Nairaland GeneralSix Feared Dead, Four Rescued After Boat Mishap In Lagos by Abimaye01(op): 6:17pm On Dec 31, 2025
At least six passengers have reportedly lost their lives, while four others were rescued following a boat mishap along the Nigerdock axis of the Igbologun water channel in Lagos State.
The incident occurred around 8:35 p.m. on Tuesday, involving a passenger boat operated by Savvy Marine, which was travelling from Ilashe Beach House at the time.
Search and rescue operations are ongoing to locate any remaining passengers. The Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) and the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) confirmed the accident in a joint statement signed by NIWA’s Head of Public Affairs, Wuraola Alake, and LASWA’s Head of Corporate Affairs, Omowunmi Yussuff.

The agencies also urged waterway users to strictly follow safety guidelines, including proper navigation procedures and adherence to the “no night travel” policy. Nairaland GeneralBauchi Finance Commissioner Remanded Over Alleged N4.6bn Money Laundering by Abimaye01(op): 5:15pm On Dec 30, 2025
The Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the remand of Yakubu Adamu, the Bauchi State Commissioner for Finance, over allegations of money laundering amounting to N4.6 billion.

Justice Emeka Nwite issued the order on Tuesday, directing that Adamu be held in custody pending a ruling on his bail application. The decision followed arguments by his counsel, Chief Gordy Uche, SAN, and opposition from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, represented by Samuel Chime.

The order came shortly after Adamu and a firm, Ayab Agro Products and Freight Company Ltd, were arraigned on a six-count charge bordering on alleged money laundering. The EFCC, in charge number FHC/ABJ/CR/694/2025, listed Adamu and the company as the first and second defendants respectively. The charge was dated and filed on December 19, 2025.

According to the prosecution, Adamu allegedly committed the offences while serving as Branch Manager of Polaris Bank Ltd in Bauchi. He was accused of conspiring with Ishaku Aliyu, Managing Director of Makayye Investment Resources Ltd, and Muntaka Mohammed Duguri, both currently at large to facilitate the conversion, transfer, concealment and use of funds totalling about N4.65 billion between June and December 2023.

The funds were reportedly released by Polaris Bank under the pretext of financing the supply of motorcycles to the Bauchi State Government through Emmanuel Asomugha General Enterprises. The EFCC alleged that the motorcycles were never supplied, an act said to be contrary to and punishable under Section 21 of the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022.

One of the counts further accused Adamu and his alleged accomplices of retaining and transferring proceeds of unlawful activities through nominees and third-party accounts. This allegedly included the transfer of N165.9 million to Ayab Agro Products and Freight Company Ltd, funds said to be part of the proceeds of the illegal transaction.

When the matter was called, the EFCC informed the court that the defendants were in court for arraignment and that the prosecution was ready to proceed. The defence raised no objection, and after the charges were read, Adamu and the company pleaded not guilty to all six counts.

The prosecution subsequently applied for a trial date, while the defence drew the court’s attention to a bail application already filed on behalf of Adamu. His counsel urged the court to grant bail on liberal terms, noting that although the prosecution had filed a counter affidavit, it had left the matter to the discretion of the court.

Opposing the request, the EFCC disclosed that it had filed a 15-paragraph counter affidavit with an exhibit and urged the court to refuse bail, while also requesting an accelerated hearing of the case.

Justice Nwite, however, stated that a ruling on the bail application would be delivered on a later date and ordered that Adamu be remanded at the Kuje Correctional Centre pending the decision. The matter was adjourned to January 2, 2026, for the bail ruling.

After the adjournment, the EFCC informed the court that additional defendants had been brought into the matter and that a fresh charge had been filed against them, including Adamu. The trial judge declined to entertain the new charge, noting that it was not yet before the court, and adjourned the arraignment until Wednesday.

The court, however, granted the prosecution’s request that Adamu be temporarily remanded in EFCC custody pending the next arraignment, citing logistical concerns.

Nairaland GeneralLagos Court Jails Drug Baron Chisco, Orders Forfeiture Of $11,600, Other Assets by Abimaye01(op): 4:54pm On Dec 30, 2025
Justice Akintayo Aluko of the Federal High Court in Lagos has sentenced Ibemesi Francis, popularly known as Chisco, to seven years’ imprisonment for trafficking 1,762.8 kilograms of cannabis sativa (marijuana).

The court also ordered the final forfeiture of the convict’s seized assets, including bank funds, vehicles, and land, to the federal government. Chisco pleaded guilty to a one-count charge filed by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

Prosecutor Abu Ibrahim informed the court that the suspect was apprehended with the illegal drugs at his residence on 19 Agboke Street, Okota, Lagos State. Following his plea, the prosecutor presented case facts, submitted exhibits, and requested conviction and sentencing.

The defence counsel, Uchenna Okenyin, appealed for leniency, emphasizing Chisco’s early guilty plea and lack of prior convictions. He requested a non-custodial sentence or a fine instead of imprisonment.

After considering arguments, Justice Aluko sentenced Chisco to seven years in prison and imposed a fine of N8 million.

The court also granted the prosecution’s application for the final forfeiture of the convict’s properties and assets, ruling they were proceeds of drug trafficking. This action was backed by provisions under Section 44(2)(k) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and multiple sections of the NDLEA Act.

The forfeited assets include bank accounts at Access Bank (USD 11,600) and Ecobank (USD 2,000, £2,000, €62,200, CAD 50), vehicles such as a silver Toyota Sienna (LAGOS FKJ 259 JJ), black Toyota Highlander (ABUJA ABJ 912 BZ), white Volkswagen Bus (LAGOS MUS 554 YF), and black Lexus 460 (LAGOS JJJ 227 JV), as well as properties at Daisy Garden, No. 7 Pius Eze Street, Isolo, and No. 19 Agboke Street, Okota, Lagos.

The NDLEA argued that preliminary investigations confirmed these funds and assets were acquired through drug trafficking, and that forfeiture was necessary to prevent dissipation. The defence opposed the motion, claiming the assets were not proceeds of illegal activity.

Justice Aluko ruled in favour of the prosecution, ordering that all identified monies, vehicles, and properties be forfeited to the federal government as proceeds of drug trafficking

Nairaland GeneralEx-fbi Deputy Chief James Comey To Face Perjury Charges by Abimaye01(op): 9:55pm On Sep 24, 2025
Federal prosecutors are getting closer to deciding whether to charge James Comey with perjury. Allnews Nigeria gathered that decision deadline is coming up this Tuesday.

The case is being handled by the U.S. Attorney’s Office in the Eastern District of Virginia. They are investigating whether Comey lied under oath when he testified to Congress on September 30, 2020, about his part in investigating Russia’s interference in the 2016 election.

If the grand jury approves charges next week, it would be a high-profile indictment of a well-known government figure — someone President Trump and his supporters call part of the so-called “deep state.”

So far, Comey has not been officially charged, and he has maintained that he told the truth under oath. His lawyer has not responded to requests for comment.

PoliticsDavid Mark's ADC Leadership Takeover Suffers Setback As Court Set New Date by Abimaye01(op): 4:41pm On Sep 15, 2025
The legal tussle over the leadership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) suffered a setback on Monday at the Federal High Court in Abuja. The suit, filed to restrain former Senate President David Mark, former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola, and Chief Ralph Nwosu from assuming leadership positions in the party, stalled due to improper service of court papers.

Justice Emeka Nwite, who presided over the matter, noted that the defendants were not properly served, as the plaintiff’s lawyer attempted to serve them through the ADC instead of personally as required by law. The judge explained that valid service could only be achieved through personal delivery or by obtaining an order for substituted service.

Acknowledging the error, the plaintiff’s counsel, Michael Agber, requested an adjournment to rectify the service process. Justice Nwite subsequently directed that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), one of the defendants, be served in open court. The court has now fixed September 30, 2025, for the continuation of the hearing.

The case was initiated by former ADC Deputy National Chairman, Nafiu-Bala Gombe, who is challenging the takeover of the party’s leadership by Mark and Aregbesola. Gombe had sought an interim injunction to stop INEC from recognising them as the national chairman and secretary of the party, but Justice Nwite declined to grant the restraining order. Instead, he ordered that the defendants be put on notice to respond to the claims.

The suit, marked FHC/ABJ/CS/1819/2025, lists the ADC, David Mark, Rauf Aregbesola, INEC, and Ralph Nwosu as defendants. Gombe’s application seeks to bar the defendants from parading themselves as party leaders pending the determination of his originating summons.

Nairaland GeneralRivers Court Dismiss Suit Challenging Emergency Rule, LG Elections by Abimaye01(op): 4:27pm On Sep 15, 2025
Rivers State High Court sitting in Port Harcourt has dismissed a suit filed by Port Harcourt-based lawyer, Williams Abayomi Stanley, against President Bola Tinubu, the Attorney General of the Federation, Sole Administrator Ibok-Ete Ibas, the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC), and its chairman over the recent local government council elections in the state.

Stanley questioned the legality of President Tinubu’s appointment of a sole administrator, who subsequently nominated the RSIEC chairman and members that oversaw the August 30 local government elections.

In his ruling, Justice Stephen Jumbo held that the High Court lacked jurisdiction to entertain the case, stressing that under the Constitution, only the Supreme Court has exclusive authority to hear matters relating to emergency rule. The judge also declared that Stanley lacked the legal standing (locus standi) to institute the suit, as he failed to demonstrate any personal interest, civil rights, or obligations affected by the actions of the defendants.

Justice Jumbo further ruled that the August 30 elections were constitutionally valid and legitimately conducted by RSIEC, not by the governor or the sole administrator, as claimed. He declined to award costs against the claimant after ruling in favor of the defendants.

Speaking after the judgment, the claimant’s counsel, Godsent Elewa, said he would advise his client to consider appealing the ruling, stating that while he respected the court’s decision, he disagreed with certain aspects.

On the other hand, counsel to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which was a defendant in the suit, Monday John Otokwala, described the judgment as a correct interpretation of the law concerning the conduct of local government elections in Rivers State.

Nairaland GeneralStep-by-step Guide:how Nigerians Can Recover Money Sent To The Wrong Bank Accoun by Abimaye01(op): 2:19pm On Sep 12, 2025
Cases of mistaken money transfers are rising across Nigeria as digital and mobile banking transactions continue to increase. With over ₦572 trillion worth of cashless transactions processed in the first seven months of 2024, according to the Nigeria Interbank Settlement System (NIBSS), incidents of sending money to the wrong account are almost inevitable.

Financial experts warn that while some victims manage to recover their money, many others lose it permanently due to delay, ignorance, or failure to follow the proper procedure. Below is a step-by-step guide on how Nigerians can recover funds mistakenly transferred to wrong bank accounts.

1. Report Immediately to Your Bank
The first and most important step is to act quickly. Visit your bank’s branch or use its official complaint channels to report the mistaken transfer. Provide full transaction details, including:

Account number and name you mistakenly transferred to
Amount transferred
Date and time of transaction
Evidence of payment (debit alert or statement)
Banks are required by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to investigate and take action once such a report is filed.

2. Recipient’s Bank Places a Post No Debit (PND)
If the complaint is valid, the recipient’s bank can place a Post No Debit (PND) on the account, temporarily restricting the owner from withdrawing or transferring funds. This is done while investigations are ongoing.

3. Await Recipient’s Consent or Court Order
If the recipient admits the error, the bank can reverse the funds directly. However, if the recipient refuses or becomes uncooperative, the sender must approach the court to obtain a reversal order.

4. Seek Legal Redress When Necessary
Depending on the amount involved, the case can be filed in the Magistrate Court, District Court, or High Court. You will need to provide:

Proof of transaction (bank statement or debit alert)
Complaint letter to your bank
Bank’s investigation report
Once a valid court order is obtained and served on the recipient’s bank, the reversal becomes mandatory.
5. Prevention is Better Than Cure
Financial experts advise Nigerians to always double-check account details before making transfers, especially to unfamiliar accounts or fintech wallets. Using “beneficiary confirmation” services provided by most banks can also help reduce costly errors.

While Nigerian laws and banking regulations make provisions for recovering funds transferred in error, success depends largely on how fast the customer acts and whether the recipient cooperates. Delay often reduces the chances of recovery, making vigilance and careful confirmation of account details the best safegurd.

Nairaland GeneralNYSC Begins Payment Of ₦77,000 Monthly Allowance For Corps Members by Abimaye01(op): 3:57pm On Mar 26, 2025
The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has officially commenced the payment of a new ₦77,000 monthly allowance for corps members across the country. This follows the federal government’s recent approval of an increased minimum wage and a subsequent adjustment of corps members' stipends.

Reports indicate that corps members nationwide have started receiving the new payment, marking a significant increase from the previous allowance of ₦33,000. The increment aligns with the government’s commitment to improving the welfare of young graduates undergoing the one-year mandatory national service.

The salary adjustment for corps members is part of the broader implementation of the newly approved minimum wage, which has led to salary reviews for federal employees, including members of the NYSC scheme. President Bola Tinubu had earlier assured Nigerian youths that his administration would prioritize their welfare, particularly those engaged in national service.

A senior NYSC official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, confirmed that the payments have commenced. "Yes, corps members have started receiving the new allowance. This is in line with the government's directive following the implementation of the new minimum wage structure," the source stated.

Corps members across various states have expressed excitement over the increment, describing it as a long-overdue relief amid Nigeria’s rising cost of living. Some took to social media to celebrate the increase, while others urged the government to ensure timely payments and further improvements in their welfare conditions.

“I just received my alert, and I can’t believe it! This will go a long way in covering our monthly expenses,” said a corps member serving in Abuja.

Another corps member in Lagos added, “We appreciate the government for this, but we also hope for improvements in accommodation and other welfare packages.”

The increased allowance is expected to boost the purchasing power of corps members, contributing to local economies in various states where they are posted. Experts believe it will enhance morale and encourage active participation in NYSC programs, particularly in community development projects.

While the new stipend brings relief, some corps members have raised concerns about inflation and the rising cost of essential goods and services. Many are calling for additional support, such as transportation and housing allowances, to further cushion economic challenges.

The NYSC management has assured corps members that all necessary measures have been put in place to ensure a seamless disbursement process. The Director-General of NYSC, Brigadier General Yusha’u Ahmed, reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to corps members' welfare, urging them to remain dedicated to their service year.

“With this increase, we expect corps members to be more motivated and focused on their duties in their places of primary assignment. We will continue to work closely with relevant authorities to enhance their overall welfare,” he stated.

The increment in the NYSC allowance comes as a welcome development amid ongoing economic challenges, signaling a renewed government effort to support Nigerian youth and encourage national service participation.
