The persistent soft knock on the window brought me out of dreamland. My foggy brain took a minute longer than normal to register that the sound that woke me was the knock on the window. I yawned and stretched on the bed lazily before the soft knock came again. My head jerked instinctively to the direction of the noise and a frown marred by face as I pondered what could be making the noise. A quick look at my bedside clock read 1:47 a.m. Alarmed I jumped off from bed as my thoughts flew to a possible burglary. The knock came again, this time a bit harder and forceful and I tiptoed to the window and heard the soft hissing sound of Kasali’s voice came. My heart fluttered in my chest as I heard Kasali’s voice “Bimpe open the window, it is me Kasali.” I quickly unlatched the window from inside and let him in as I made directly for my bedroom door and locked it. He was standing there, looking just as handsome as when I last saw him. “What are you doing HERE Kasali, have you gone insane?” I asked trying to control the excited tremor in my voice. If my father met Kasali in my room, he would be absolutely mad. Father couldn’t stand Kasali because of he was a welder’s son and considered him beneath me, a university undergraduate. If only father knew that despite’s Kasali’s lack of education, he was a smart and caring young man with a good heart. But what did father know about love? Absolutely nothing! Kasali stood there unsure of what to do and I realized my questions must have scared him. I went to him and hugged him close to him forgetting we were under my father’s roof and that he had climbed a three-storey building just to come see me. My heart fluttered momentarily as the thought of him falling off while climbing entered my head and I shuddered irreverently. He mistook my shaking for cold and he wrapped his arms tightly around me as I sagged into him and let him hold me close. No words were exchanged as we held each other close with no other witness but the moon far up in the sky, its light rays peeking into my room to catch a glimpse of our forbidden affair. I took his hand and led him to my bed as we both sat down softly and spoke in hushed whispers. In his usual manner, he was witty and humourous and I forgot myself for a second and laughed out loud. My heart stopped in my chest as I realized what I had done and we both stood stoic still as we waited to hear the footsteps come to my room but nothing happened. After about five minutes of waiting for the impending doom and nothing happened, we continued our conversation and loving embraces. “Open the door this very minute Bimpe!” father’s booming voice came from the other side as he rapped hard on my door. Kasali and I sprung apart and I could see the fright on his face. He was like a rabbit caught in the headlights of an oncoming vehicle and he made for the window. I shook in fright as I made for the door and paused for just a minute to make sure Kasali was out the window before I opened the door. Father barged into the room and looked around before, his whole body raging with anger. He looked round the room before turning to face me “Where is he? Where is the bastard?” Without waiting for an answer his palm connected with my cheek and whatever answer I had been about to give died in my throat. His eyes caught the open window then and he headed straight for it. Peeking out he boomed “God help me if I catch you riffraff.” That was the last I heard before a scream came from outside and then the sickening thud of a body hitting concrete. It was Kasali’s voice and I heard a woman’s scream from outside. Mother had come into the room by now and we both rushed to see what had happened. Kasali lay on the ground below, sprawled on the floor unconsciously with his life oozing out of him as father reeled from the window and landed another slap on my face. “I hope he is dead!” with that father left and I slumped to the floor crying and praying Kasali would be alright. Jolene, Jolene, Jolene, Jolene I'm begging of you please don't take my man Jolene, Jolene, Jolene, Jolene Please don't take him just because you can As Dolly Parton’s voice crooned emotionally from the stereo in the car, Ada dashed at the tears that were flowing from her eyes, blinding her vision. She shouldn’t be crying; Andrew didn’t deserve her tears after all she didn’t love him or so she had convinced herself for the past nine months. Ada prided herself of always being in control of all her relationships and as she traveled down memory lane now, she realized that she had allowed herself to be a sucker and let ego GET in the way of her emotions. She was a beautiful girl of twenty-one and although from a middle class family, lived larger than most of her peers in the university. She wasn’t just another pretty face in the crowd, she was talented. At a young age of nineteen, she had won a music talent show that had earned her a recording deal, her PRESENT car and a celebrity status. She was all the things all the other girls wanted except she had totally botched all of that now with what was going on. Andrew had wormed his way into her life against her better judgment; he was everything she didn’t want in a man but somehow he had been able to get her to consent to be his girlfriend. Of all the other guys that had been admiring her, he had been the most persistent and with the help of two of her close friends, he had gotten what he wanted. She agreed to date him because her label had insisted she needed to have a public figure of a lover to appeal to her fan base as a decent, responsible young star. Not wanting the hassles of a real relationship, she had offered an eager and too willing Andrew the option of an arranged relationship. She had never told him she loved him for once during all their time together but her attitude had changed towards him after about four months together. She had STARTED to genuinely care. Although he was an acting boyfriend, he took the relationship seriously. He had always said he didn’t care whether she said it wasn’t a real relationship since his love for her was true. He was always there for her whenever she was depressed or going through a bad patch with her music career. All the dates, outings and attending events together soon made them pretty close and she warmed up to him though never acknowledging she had any true feelings for him, until now. Andrew was about to leave her for another girl. The scandal of being jilted was not the worst of it all; he was dumping her for her best friend Elizabeth. Lizzy wasn’t as pretty as she but was equally as talented; she was a top actress and equally an A-list celebrity in her own right. They were so close the paparazzi had tagged them “Soul Sisters,” Lizzy had even appeared in some of Ada’s music videos and Ada couldn’t still believe this was happening. Ada hadn’t yet gotten over the betrayal by Lizzy, it was all the more shocking because Lizzy had never hidden her disapproval of Andrew, a guy she considered beneath their standards. To imagine that Lizzy was about to publicly step out with him was hurting. Ada slumped in the car seat and smiled ruefully to herself. Dear old Dolly knew just how it felt when YOUR man is about to be taken away from you. Just then Brandy and Monica’s “The Boy Is Mine” came one. As the lyrics concerning who the boy belongs to filled her ears, Ada shaked herself mentally as she realized she wasn’t about to give up without a fight, this boy was hers and it was going to be a fight to the finish. How true is this people?

[Excerpt from Episode 9: Damilola couldn’t believe her ears and she looked at him in speechless wonder. Taking her stunned look as a sign of encouragement, he moved closer to her and kissed her softly on the lips. Offering no resistance she kissed him back and his hand loosened the towel she had earlier wrapped around herself as they both fell back on the bed.] Gbade was true to his word, he was the perfect boyfriend once again and Damilola was once again transported to cloud nine. Anu took every opportunity to make her disapproval of the relationship known and said declared dating Muyiwa would have been a much better option. Muyiwa on the other hand after his first meeting with Gbade had stayed away and it was while in bed ONEnight she realized they had drifted apart. Damilola felt a twinge of sadness hit her as she realized she had lost Muyiwa to have Gbade back. He barely talked to her these days and always had the excuse of work for not calling her or coming around. Damilola turned and stared at Gbade’s sleeping figure beside her, he had said something about getting married vaguely but she had acted like she didn’t hear. If he wanted to marry her then he had to propose normally in the traditional manner of going on his knees. Her heart went back to Muyiwa and she decided she was going to make sure she saw him the NEXT day. The following day, Damilola placed a call to Muyiwa who had the same cool tone he had developed since her decision to GET back with Gbade. Ignoring his cold tone, she tried to joke with him in their usual banter but he refused to let up and with that she finally blurted out “Look, what is wrong with you Muyiwa. You have been so cold and mean to me lately, you barely call or even want to see me. If anything is the matter why not let us thrash it out like adults instead of treating me like a leper.” His tone held a hint of mockery in it as he replied “I have just been busy Damilola and it is very apparent that you have been busy as well. What, with Gbade around you all the time, I didn’t think you have time for anything or anybody else.” Damilola sighed and rolled her eyes in frustration “I am not going to argue this with you young man. See me today by six p.m. at my apartment.” He hesitated for a second before he replied “Alright.” She didn’t know what she was thinking asking him to come over but she knew she was anticipating his visit. She missed that man she could laugh with and joke around it, Muyiwa had a way of making her freely totally at ease and alive again and she really missed that. Gbade’s arrival had sort of made her neglect him but who could blame her? He had his precious Halima and she on the other hand was going to always be the side chick, at least with Gbade she was the main chick albeit he may be cheating again when he returned to the state. Gbade had also revealed that he upon his return to the States, he wasn’t planning on coming back for a very long time. He wanted her to come join him but she wasn’t so sure about that. The life she knew was all here in Nigeria and making such a big change like relocating was a major step for her. The doorbell rang just then and she STARTED out of her thoughts; without even realizing it a smile appeared on her face as she made a mental note of Muyiwa’s usual punctuality. “What will you have me do Damilola? Stay around with YOUR boyfriend around and probably wondering who the Bleep I am? Your going back to him isn’t the wisest thing you have done believe me.” Muyiwa’s voice was raised in a manner that clearly showed his frustration. He stood with his eyes on fire as he glowered at Damilola who was sitting on a couch and staring up at his standing figure. She had brought up the subject of his aloofness and cold behavior. “You also have a girlfriend and I haven’t been acting up because of that. All I am saying is I want the old you back. The guy that makes me smile and makes me feel special, is that too much to ask? Or is that man gone?” His face softened a bit as he saw the genuine anguish on her face and he realized he had allowed his jealousy get the best of him. He banged his fist into his palm frustratedly and stooped low to meet Damilola at eye level. He stared at her for a minute before he took her by the shoulder and shook her gently. “Don’t you get it Dammy? I am jealous and it’s killing me. I shouldn’t feel this way about you but I do and we both know I have no right to be jealous. Keeping my distance is the best way I knew to keep my sanity, I can’t stand the sight of you two together but you deserve to be happy and since he makes you happy I can’t stand in the way of that.” Damilola’s eyes misted over as she felt a glow go through her, Muyiwa had never openly admitted his feelings for her before. Yes she knew he had feelings but they had always avoided talking about it. He continued “I have Halima and God knows I love her and don’t ever want to hurt her so acting the way I have been is good for everybody at the end of the day. I can’t be with you without thinking of wanting to kiss you, strip you off your CLOTHES, hug you close to me or cuddle you. You deserve better than Gbade or me, we shouldn’t keep treating you this way...” Damilola drew him close to her then and kissed him on the lips, shutting off the rest of his words. He groaned deep in his throat as he drew her roughly to him and raped her mouth. They panted like starved animals as they tore at each other’s CLOTHES. He took off her blouse and flung it away from him blindly as he pushed her back against the couch and lifted up her skirt. She was wearing no pants and his head went under her skirt. They were both on the roller coaster of pleasure when Gbade’s voice broke through the cloud of passion “Damilola…” his voice came from a thousand miles off but was enough cold water to dampen the hot fire. The two sprung apart as they faced Gbade standing there, a briefcase in one hand and a box of chocolates in the other. To be continued Keep updated, follow on Twitter and Instagram with @iamposhkid. [Excerpt From Episode 8: The alarms went off in her head as she heard him say “I would be coming to Nigeria to see you Dammy. I miss you and I know I have been a jerk but I want to make things right with you. When I think of love, you are all I can think of is you. I love you Dammy and I can’t stop loving you.”] Damilola wringed her hands together nervously as she and Anu waited for Gbade’s flight to arrive. It was like the last time all over again but this time she wasn’t nervous in an excited sort of way. Truth was she didn’t know exactly how she felt, who would have believed that the thought of Gbade would throw her into such a state of confusion. Muyiwa had been oddly silent and aloof since she told him of Gbade’s call. He had shrugged nonchalantly and said it was her choice to go back to him. She had sensed the hurt in his voice but didn’t want to push it. He after all had a girlfriend and there wasn’t much of a future for her with him. Not especially with herself and Halima suddenly becoming good friends. She was jerked out of her thoughts as a voice announced over the speaker the arrival of Gbade’s plane. She stared imploringly at Anu as if her face held succor but Anu only stared at her with a cool look on her face. They had had a huge fight about this, Anu wasn’t in support of her seeing Gbade after all that had happened but she wasn’t going to push it. Dammit! They all just didn’t understand how her heart still thumped for him and how just the sound of his voice made her heart melt. A smile played on her lips as past memories flashed through her mind as Anu barely managed to hide her disdain as she watched her best friend. Later that night as she and Gbade were getting ready for bed, she wondered where he was going to sleep. Was he going to make for the guest room or join her in her own bed? They had not been able to talk much with Anu’s present and Gbade in his usual self conscious manner had been unable to relax. As if sensing her presence was hindering something important, Anu had chosen to follow them home and only left when her husband called her on the phone. “Can we talk Tangy?” Damilola’s head jerked backwards as she turned to face Gbade standing by the entrance of the bathroom. Her face heated up as she realized she was standing fully naked in front of him and she saw his eyes rove over her body approvingly. “You scared me Gbade,” she said self consciously as she made for her towel and tied it around her chest self consciously. His eyes followed her every movement and the bathroom suddenly seemed hot. She pushed past him and went into the bedroom with him trailing behind her like a besotted puppy. She sat on the edge of the bed and plucked idly on her nightgown that she had laid on the bed for the night. She cocked her eyebrow to indicate he could talk and he shifted his weight from one foot to the other nervously. “I know I have wronged you Damilola, I messed up big time. While I am not trying to blame you, we both had our faults and I should have handled things better. Getting involved with Mirabel was one of the stupidest mistakes I have made in my life as it cost me a gem like you to walk out of my life. Your getting pregnant for another man was the final straw that broke our already strained relationship but the good Lord in the high heavens know I still love you. I want you to give me a second chance to make things right, I know you still love me and together we can do forever. I love you my Tangy baby.” Damilola couldn’t believe her ears and she looked at him in speechless wonder. Taking her stunned look as a sign of encouragement, he moved closer to her and kissed her softly on the lips. Offering no resistance she kissed him back and his hand loosened the towel she had earlier wrapped around herself as they both fell back on the bed. My heart ached heavily as I tossed and turned o my bed, unable to sleep. My bedside clock read 2:07am and I realized I had been trying to GET some sleep for the last four hours to no avail. My heart knew no peace, not with this heavy burden place on it. How could I lure myself to sleep when these images and thoughts haunts me? The sharp pain I felt as a mosquito landed on my thigh and pierced my skin in search of blood was a welcome relief. For days now I have felt numb and this pain was a comfort to my bereaved mind that I was still alive. Alive did I say? This wasn’t much of a life when my waking thoughts and entire being was settled on someone had tossed aside the knowledge of my existence. She moved on, that was what she called it! I haven’t been able to though, not with me in this confused state. How can I move on when I was being consumed with the shame of what I had done? When my unrepentant heart thumps still for the ONE that cared not and loving memories clogged up my brain, leaving no space for reasonable thinking. I still remember the nights we spent in each other’s arms, those nights of passionate abandon. When under the cover of darkness she sneaked me into her parent’s house and right under their noses we made love till the gradual yawning of the sky reminded us another day was about to begin. The nights when the first crow of the cock was my reminder to GET ready to leave as my cloak of darkness was beginning to fade and I faced the peril of discovery. Could I forget so quickly the ardent passion with which she clung to me every time I bade to leave before discovery. She moved on she said, from the memories of the cold night when she had shivered like a leaf danced senseless in a raging storm. How it was my body that had brought her warmth and how she had held me close to her like I was life itself. All that was a distant memory now, I should move on they tell me but how can I? Can I undo the wrath of my father I incurred when I willingly defied him to be with her? Can I wipe away the tears of mother as she begged me not to be a fool and earn the curse of a parent? The curse; I was only too willing to receive father’s curse so long as I had her. Sadly she lies NEXT to me not as father’s words ringed in my ear, “You will someday curse the day you met Ijeoma. You are nothing but a bastard to me now and I do not ever want to see you again as long as I live.” Or what a fool I had been as I had retorted in anger “May the thunder of Sango strike me if I so much as visit your grave!” Mother’s shrill cry was all I heard as I stepped out of the house and thought myself rid of their nonsense. It didn’t take her two weeks after we eloped for her to GET tired of me and of course it didn’t help that she became the object of affection of another man; a man with far more to offer than I could with my being cut off father’s wealth. Without so much as a proper goodbye, Ijeoma left. She left leaving me nothing behind but a note that had but three lines “I Moved On.” Ijeoma left and moved on to another and now as I lie in this bed I realize father’s curse had indeed manifested, as with the tears silently flowing from my eyes I cursed the day I met Ijeoma. Weddings are memorable occasions as it is always considered a special day for both the lucky bride and the groom. While the couple might remember their wedding day for its joyous celebration of love, guests are sometimes left with unforgettable hilarious moments from the event. Let’s take a quick look at some funny things Nigerian people do at weddings. People Expect Take Away Food: If you have been to a couple of Nigerian weddings then you shouldn’t be too surpirsed when you see people requesting for where to buy polythene bags. Apparently your wedding is only a success and the talk of town when your guests have had enough to eat and have excess to take home to their family and loved ones. A popular Nigerian song goes thus “a o je aje yo, a o tu di lole.” This roughly translated simply means that ‘we would eat to our satisfaction and still have more to take home.’ Single Guests Are Expected to Marry Next: It is not uncommon to see aged people plaguing the single folks with questions about when they are getting wedding invitees from them. If your friend is getting married and you are acting as a best man, grooms man, chief bridesmaid or bridesmaid, it is in your best interest to either be engaged or have a doting lover around. People never get tired of asking the question of when it is going to be your turn. No Ankara, No Food: Another popular slang in Nigeria concerning weddings is the Yoruba saying that ‘O wo ankara o je semo.’ This roughly translated simply means that if you are not putting on the chosen attire for the wedding, then there is no food for you. As a way of trying to identify party crashers, Nigerians have cleverly employed the method of using rhyming attires to know the gate crashers. If you are considered a party crasher then don’t expect to have food getting to your side. Souvenirs are Selectively Distributed: More often than not, you will see a group of women and sometimes even men coming back from an occasion carrying all sorts of gifts. From buckets, rechargeable lamps, hand-fans to what have you depending on the financial strength of the couple. But one thing that is worthy of laugh is usually the struggle to make sure that you get a wedding souvenir to attest that you attended. Most times the person sharing looks at faces and makes sure that his or her own people get first before ‘strangers’ are served. Come With Plenty Money: Ever been to a traditional Yourba wedding? If yes then you can relate to this. As a groom and grooms man you are expected to have a boxed up pocket on your wedding day. The bride is usually ‘flown in’ from overseas, her veil is paid for before it can be revealed, and you literally have to spray everything that comes your way with money. Generally as a guest in any Nigerian wedding however, if you don’t want to be left behind, you are adviced to come with money to spray the newly wedded couple. [Excerpt From Episode 7: She could sense the sadness in his eyes even in her weak state and she whispered, “The baby is gone isn’t it?” Muyiwa stared at her before nodding his head in affirmation and she closed her eyes and allowed the tears to flow freely.] With her hands folded under her breasts, Damilola stared at nothing in particular in her dark bedroom where she had refused to budge since the last one week that she had gotten back from the hospital. Losing the baby was like losing Gbade all over again only this time it hurt about three times more. Anu who was staying with her for the time being was beginning to get angry at her refusal to eat or talk and even Muyiwa was beginning to show signs of exasperation. She just couldn’t stop the flow of tears or the constant ache in her heart and every time she heard a rustle, she always startled like she was under attack. “Why me all the time? I can’t keep a man, I am here lusting after another woman’s man and now my baby has been taking from me. This life just doesn’t want me in it.” Damilola mused darkly to herself as fresh tears welled up in her eyes and she balled her fists tightly to suppress the boiling anger she felt. She wished she could end it all, take a leap in front of a moving train or something but damn it, she just didn’t have the courage to end her own life. The tears spilled over and she groaned out aloud like someone in pain just as the door opened and Muyiwa stepped in with a pretty lady behind him. The opened door let in some light into the room and from her corner of the bed Damilola studied the woman behind Muyiwa. She was pretty in a stunning sort of way with dark skin and large innocent eyes. She had full lips and a figure that would sure have any man staring twice and she had the carriage of someone who was unaware of her own effect on men. Damilola didn’t need to be told this was the famous Halima. She stared daggers at Muyiwa as she realized how horrible she must look in comparism to Halima just then. She cringed as Halima took in her appearance and gasped before rushing forward to embrace her in a hug like they were long lost friends. “Oh you poor dear, I am so sorry about your loss Dammy. I just had to come over when Muyi told me about your miscarriage. I am terribly sorry but we can’t have you moping around like this forever.” Muyiwa watched the scene without a word as he saw the expression in Dammy’s eyes and the daggers she threw at him with her eyes as Halima dragged her from the bed and urged her gently towards the bathroom. Muyiwa smiled wryly to himself as he listened to Halima chatter nineteen to the dozen as she prepared Dammy’s bath. Lord bless her heart he thought to himself. The change Halima brought was surprising that even Anu got a bit jealous of this new angel. Halima had a way of making you do things even when you didn’t want to and before long she had Damilola eating a meal of boiled beans and fried plantain. Anu had watched with amazement as the new woman worked her magic and Damilola even managed weak smiles at times towards the conversation on the table. Halima talked about everything like they were all old time friends and Anu couldn’t help liking her. She wondered what Halima would think if she knew that Damilola was sleeping with Muyiwa but she dismissed that quickly from her mind and said a silent prayer of gratitude for sending Halima to help Dammy get over her grief. Damilola was reading a novel and munching on her favourite chocolate one cool evening about three weeks after the miscarriage when her phone suddenly rang. She stared at the phone as if it was some dangerous weapon as Gbade’s named appeared on the caller ID. Her heart quickened in her chest and she felt a rush of excitement go through her, picking up the phone cautiously like it was about to explode, she answered the call. “Hello Dammy,” the sound of his voice brought a wave of emotions and for a second her mouth refused to open and she mentally chided herself for being such a fool. She muttered a cool hello in return and listened as he asked her how she felt. Anu had informed him about the miscarriage and he was calling to check on her. She felt a mix of happiness and anger; she was happy to finally hear from him since they had unofficially broken up but she was also angry that he had been in touch with Anu well enough for her to have informed him about the miscarriage. Anu had no right to have given Gbade the news, it wasn’t her place. The alarms went off in her head as she heard him say “I would be coming to Nigeria to see you Dammy. I miss you and I know I have been a jerk but I want to make things right with you. When I think of love, you are all I can think of is you. I love you Dammy and I can’t stop loving you.” To Be Continued Keep updated, follow on Twitter and Instagram @iamposhkid or visit the blog via www.akinwrites..com |
He was drunk again. You would know from the intonation of his voice as he sang a popular Fela's song: "Double wahala for dead body..." His voice kept rising as if he owned the compound. The Landlady was around yesterday to insult Mother for marrying a worthless man, asking her to leave Father in his wretchedness and seek greener pastures in the arms of a better man. Sometimes, I wished I could wrap Junior’s shit in banana leaves and throw it into that Landlady’s big mouth. "The Igbos were fools, they should have swallowed every bullet from the Federal army for their Biafra to stand as a soldier who the bullets cannot conquer!" Hiccups punctuated his brassy statement after every two words that dropped like cock's faeces from his drunken lips. Mother sat at the edge of the metallic bed that had a fleas-infested mattress placed on it. She tied around her slender body one of the three wrappers she claimed her mother gave her on the day before she ran out of the house with Father. It seemed she had been getting thinner recently: her neck bones were shooting out as if they were tired of staying inside her body, and her buttocks that used to make Sani (her teenage admirer) to stalk her for days, no longer swayed (it was just there below her waist like a plastered mould of dried Amala). Mother did not use to be as bony as this at all: a skeleton with skin as tight as spandex. If you had seen her that night, you would find out that her skin had holes like bowls awaiting the rain of sweat. Father knocked like a zombie. Kokookooo! The sound of his knuckles against the door depreciated with each fall. He knew that the door was opened, but he would always knock before he entered. He claimed that he knocked thrice because if any man should come to share the creaking bed with Mother, his wife, when he was not at home, such a man had three seconds to disappear before he entered. Although he was dead drunk, he managed to manoeuvre his way to the bed amidst the multitude of sleeping children sprawled on the floor like a family of rags – all on a collection of sacks, which were laid on the semi-cemented floor of the one-room apartment in Maroko. "Welcome, shey make I serve you your food?" Mother’s localised voice was sharp, piercing like a hunter's arrow. "Food? The only food wey I want na di one wey dey play hide and seek for di centre of your wrapper." The smirk on his face increased the degree of disgust I felt about him. Could he not see? Had the bottles of beer stolen his sight and reasoning? Couldn't he count the number of children his penniless penis had attracted to this world? Nine children plus six miscarriages in twelve years, living in a murky room, where mosquitoes were our constant companions every evening! After this grievous record, why did he still want to implant another foetus into Mother’s womb? Ah, Father must have gone out of his mind! "But abeg drink small water na if you no wan chop the food wey I sweat prepare for you. I no wan the smell of alcohol from your mouth to make me cough anyhowooo..." Mother seemed to extend the pronunciation of the “o” as she implored him, making her hands to touch his for a positive response. "Okay. Bring di water sharp sharp. I no fit wait to do di real business, di koko of di koko, because e get as e dey do me, do me…." As Father sang one of P-Square’s hit songs, he pulled his sweat-soaked shirt, also his torn brown singlet, revealing a stomach that looked as if it would fall if one punched it down. Mother moved quickly outside, and returned in less than three minutes. The drunkard drank from the cup of insecticide in her left hand, which she served him while genuflecting. Maybe if he had seen the hand she used to serve him the cup, or maybe if the smell of the alcohol he took had not overshadowed that smell from the cup, he would have been suspicious. Father, Mother’s husband, drank the substance in the cup – everything to the dregs. About three minutes later, Mother lay supine with her eyes shut as if she was afraid to see something gothic. He battled with the knot of Mother’s wrapper. Then he made his hands to slide from the soles of her feet to the middle of her thighs, where he began to finger her as if he was picking worms from her privates.Mother tried to hold her breath, and to close her eyes tighter. As soon as he plunged into her, he began to foam at the mouth: white substance like ice cream spilled from his mouth. I had never tasted ice cream before so I felt like stretching one of my fingers to know how the substance from Father's mouth would taste. Would it be as bitter as our lives? Mother refused to stir or scream. She allowed him to die still lying on her till dawn. Love is a good feeling when it is true and every man likes to wine and dine with his woman, making her feel special and loved. However in the course of carrying out his many duties, he also has to take care not to be taken on a fool’s ride by crafty women, below are five sings to know if that girls only wants you for your money. She Never Pays for Anything: Your gold digger alert better be flashing a bright red signal if you have to always pay for all the dates that you go on. There is something wrong if the movie dates, restaurant bills and other expenses incurred while together always have to be settled by you. While it is good for you to treat your lady right, this is the 21st century and a woman is a helper, you shouldn’t pay for everything all the time. There should be times she is also willing to treat you or split the bills with you. She Demands for Expensive Things: Singer Davido already said it all in his hit song “Aye” when he said his babe doesn’t want Ferrari or designers but his love. If you are dating a girl that is always demanding for expensive things you should start reconsidering the real motive of the relationship. Expensive gifts are all the more special only when they are done rarely and willingly. If your girl seems to be the materialistic type, then in all likelihood she won’t stick with you during bad times; she will leave you the next minute a richer person wants her. Her Friends Always Come Along On Dates: Another sign to show that a Nigerian girl is interested in your money rather than you is when you go on dates and she has a friend or two along. Wise up already, three is a crowd and when you asked her out you weren’t asking to sign up to date her entire clique. Keep it at the back of your mind that if she is in the habit of buying take away stuffs for her friends back home then you are just another Nigerian maga. She Lacks Career Aspiration: Think twice before dating a Nigerian girl that lacks career aspiration, if she is not willing to work and make her own money then you are entering danger zone if you move in her direction. A girl that is dependent on her looks to get what she wants or prefers her man does everything does not need any further introduction, take to your heels. If she isn’t self reliant, it only means as her man she would expect you to pick up all her bills, in this case you become Mr. Fix It. She is Overtly Curious about Your Financial Status: This particular sign works in two ways, a girl might actually be interested in your financial status to make sure that she is dating a financially secure man. On the other hand she could also be asking to calculate how much she can milk from you or if you are worth her time. When a girl is more curious about your bank account statement than in you, keep your guards up and be on the lookout for any of the other signs mentioned earlier to help determine if she just wants to chop your money. [Excerpt from Episode 5: Damilola was certainly an interesting woman and he could see clearly that she loved this Gbade guy, if only the bastard could see that. Some guys were just too blind to recognize the good placed in front of them. As he drove into his compound about an hour later, he picked out his cell phone to call his girlfriend Halimat, he wasn’t going to be another blind guy.] The friendship between Damilola and Muyiwa grew rapidly that it was hard to imagine that just a month before they had not known each other. They made phone calls every day and she was always busy chatting with him on the phone for a better part of her day . At first they pretended it was because of the pregnancy, he was a doctor and she was always in need of one answer or the other to her anxieties. A month and about two weeks after they met, it was clear that there was an attraction between the two but Damilola was not willing to admit it. “You know you like this guy don’t you?” She was at her best friend’s Anu and they were discussing Muyiwa. Anu was always the one she could tell everything but lately she had been doing that with Muyiwa. She had always assuaged her guilty conscience by telling herself that Anu was having a lot to deal with as a newly married woman. “Not that I like him in the sense that you are trying to insinuate but rather as a really good friend. You do know he is my doctor and he was the one that convinced me to keep the baby.” Anu raised her eyebrow in obvious disbelief and smiled sweetly, “Well anything you say dear but don’t forget I am your best friend and I should be able to read you. I think you are just being hesitant because he has a girlfriend. How do you feel about that by the way?” Damilola sighed and shook her head from left to right “You are not listening to me Anu, I do not like Muyiwa in that light. He has a girlfriend that he loves dearly and I am just a female friend. Okay? You really need to chill out babes, who will like a woman pregnant for another man? And am I not the same person coming out of a relationship where I got cheated on, why would I want another man to cheat on his own girlfriend then. No can’t do!” she finished emphatically. “Alright, alright. I hear you but I will still be here waiting to see how things unfold.” Muyiwa couldn’t understand what was going on with him; he just couldn’t get Damilola off his mind. He tugged at his tie as he removed his medical overall and dropped it on the chair. He could hear her voice in his head now as she teased him about something, he could hear her ringing laughter that always reminded him of tinkling glass and he could smell her perfume that reminded him of jasmine. He knew he shouldn’t be thinking about her this way but he did and he couldn’t help it. He loved Halimat and he didn’t want to hurt her but he just couldn’t help this attraction towards Damilola. He knew Damilola felt the same way too but they had found a way of skirting around the issue so it doesn’t bring up any awkwardness between them. Just then his phone rang and a big smile appeared on his face as he saw Damilola’s name appear on the caller id. He groaned as he picked the call and her voice filled his ear. As they talked about her day and how work had been hectic for him, he felt himself growing hard and he swallowed. It had been a while since he had sex and this past week he had been Hot like never before. Halimat was currently on a visiting trip to her village for a month and that meant that he had not seen her in a while. He wasn’t really the sex type but once in a while, his manhood needed attention and his closeness to Damilola wasn’t helping his libido. Without realizing what he was doing, he blurted out “What are you doing tonight Dammy? I would like for you to come over to my apartment.” He heard her hesitate a second before her trembling voice came over the phone “I would like to. Pick me up by 7pm.” The timing worked perfectly for him as he got off work by 5 and that left him with about a hour and half to dash home, get a bit refreshed before heading over to her place to pick her. Dinner was over and he could see Damilola was restless, she fidgeted in her seat a couple of times and he took her hand gently and looked into her eyes. “What is the matter, you have been acting restless all evening.” She snatched her hands from his as if it burned and then she laughed to try covering it up. He wasn’t stupid, he realized she was aware of the sexual tension between them and this night seemed particularly tenser than usual. He looked at her questioningly and she sighed in despair before blurting out. “Don’t act like you don’t know what’s going on here Muyi. We both know there is an obvious chemistry we are trying to ignore here. It is not healthy for both of us and my best friend already thinks that we are going to end up in bed. You have a girlfriend and this is just totally wrong but I can’t help feeling the way I do. I think I should go home, would you drive me home please or call me a taxi.” As she talked, Muyiwa moved closer to her and taking her by shoulder he pulled her to himself before lowering his head to kiss her. She pushed at his chest feebly but her softness had him reeling and he held on firmly as his lips found hers and with a slight moan she sagged into him and opened her mouth to him. The softness of her lips was unimaginable and his senses were flooded with all sorts of enticing sensations. His tongue probed her mouth as it explored its caves and corners and he heard her whimper as his hand found her breast and he squeezed slightly. She unbuttoned his shirt like an expert and pushed him back on the couch as in one quick movement, she had her blouse off and towered above him in just her red lace bra and patterned skirt. Looking up at her, she looked like a goddess with her eyes darkened with pleasure and as she bent close to him, her hand went behind her back and he heard her bra unclasp and her breasts swung free. Her mouth took his again and he was lost in a tide of passion. To Be Continued Stay updated, follow on Twitter and Instagram @iamposhkid or visit www.akin writes..com |
She has vowed to wait and meet Santa Claus this time – no going out, no sleeping, and no leaving the sitting room. Her dream must break forth into reality; she is tired of waiting. Since Odunwas two, she has been dreaming of meeting Santa Claus. She has been awaiting the day she will look into Santa Claus's eyes to see the colour of his eyeballs. She wants to pass her fingers like a comb through his fluffy white beard. She also wants to put her ear on his stomach to know if there are coins jingling therein. Or maybe notes. She imagines he vomits money like an unbridled ATM for him to be able to purchase so manygifts that he distributes. She wants to feel the tenderness in his palms too. She has waited for six years, but something always happened that would be the reason she could not see Santa Claus. Last year and the one before, she fell asleep. That was her parents' justification for her not seeing him. When she asked her parents why they did not wake her, they claimed Santa Claus restrained them, saying he does not like disturbing children sleeping on Christmas day. Why is Santa Claus avoiding me, she wonders. Today, another Christmas day, she is determined to see Santa Claus. I must see him today, she keeps confessing to herself and anyone who cares to listen. After she had heard Aunty Ayo talking about a girl that was drugged and raped in a nightclub,Odun began to suspect her parents – she suspects they had given her sleeping pills last two Christmas. So, she has refused to eat or drink until she sees Santa Claus. This resolution has not just brought a great worry to her parents' faces and hearts,it has also brought their fingers to their hair, which they are giving a good scratch, thinking about how to resolve the issue on ground. Odun sits on the gold-coloured settee, eyes glued to the TV, ears alert to any jingle from outside. Today na today, her parents rack their brain, wondering how to handle this starving, stubborn child of theirs. AndOdun is too innocent to pity them or understand their plight. At about 11am, the Santa Claus she has been expecting appears. An average height clad in his Christmas attire with a bag of gifts appears at the doorpost. The only problem with this Santa Claus is that it has a chocolate-coloured skin unlike the ones she has been seeing in her storybooks and Christmas posters. "Here comes your Santa Claus, sweetheart," her mum announces, bowing and pointing her two hands at him as if she wants to receive a gift from him. "But why is he black, mum?" "Oh, Santa Claus has the unique gift of a chameleon. That is, if he is in America, he is white; if he is in Africa, he is black; if he is in India, he is red. Like that, like that. Am I right, Santa Claus?" “Yes, ma’am,” Santa Claus bows as he replies her, still smiling like he does not know how to frown at all. "Wow, that's amazing!" She runs towards the standing smiling Santa Claus, and gives him a big hug as if she wants to swallow him with her thin, tender hands. "Welcome, my hero! At last, my dream has come true! I am now the happiest girl on earth!" She screams as she drags him to the settee. After sitting, Santa Claus brings out a gift and gives it to her. "Merry Christmas, Odun." The words flow out of his mouth via the shiny canoe of the smile etched on his face. "Thank you, Santa Claus, I love you! But how do you know my name?" "Oh, your mum told me. She also told me you have refused to eat, and I would love you to eat now, and be a good girl. Do you understand?" He says, touching her cheeks. "Now that I have seen you, I will eat. In fact, I can eat the whole food cooked by everyone celebrating Christmas today." "Anyway, I have to leave now. I have other houses to go to." He says after glancing at the wall clock, ticking a few feet away, opposite them. "Oh, not so fast! I have wanted to look into your eyes, touch your beard, put my ear on your stomach and give my hands to you so I can feel the tenderness in your palm. So can you please allow me to complete my dream?" "No problem. You have sixty seconds, Odun." She peeps into his eyes as if her eyes are a microscope searching for a tiny organism somewhere in the orbs of this Santa Claus. "Your eyeballs have the same colour with those of my dad. And where is dad, mum?" She turns to face her mum, who has been struggling to stifle a sea of laughter surging in her. "I think he must have gone out to get some Christmas decoration items. He will soon be back, sweetheart." Odun then continues to fulfil her dream. She lifts her right hand until her palm touches Santa Claus's bushy cheeks. She feels as if she is waving her hand deep into the sky. She closes her eyes as she caresses his beard. Then somewhere deep inside of her, a naughty voice tells her to pull the beard to confirm how real her dream is. She grabs the beard firmly, and before Santa Claus can restrain her, she pulls the beard, and the beard obeys her gravitational pull. And the Santa Claus's face becomes that of her beloved father. "Dad!?" Her mum releases the laughter into the Christmas air. Her father becomes infected with the laughter flu, and his bass laughter creates a gentle vibration. Although, Odun seems surprised and annoyed, she cannot help it but to be infected with the laughter so thick in the air. She laughs too, louder than everyone does. [Excerpt from Episode 4: She wished she could comfort him but she didn’t know how. Everything she said or tried to do only seem to upset him more and in that moment she decided the baby had to go to save her relationship. Pushing aside her hair from eyes, she looked at him with red-rimmed eyes and said quietly “I will fix this Gbade.”] She pulled the tip of her hair nervously as she stepped into the doctor’s office. It wasn’t like she owed anybody an explanation on why she was getting rid of the baby but it still felt embarrassing telling a doctor she wanted an abortion. She took in a quick scan of the office as the smiling young man waved her to a seat. It was the same cold, sterile walls of every hospital and the whiteness of the walls made her feel all the more evil for what she was about to do. She took in the doctor fully since entering the room and made a mental note that he was young and quite good looking. She guessed him to be in his mid-twenties and not more than twenty-seven at the most. His raised eyebrow made her realize she had been staring and she nervously cleared her throat as she choked out what she wanted to do. His smiling expression didn’t change, it was like he encountered a lot of this everyday on the job and she felt totally ridiculous as she waited for his response. He stared at her for about another minute before he finally spoke. “If you don’t mind my intruding, may I ask why you want to do it? He doesn’t want the baby?” Damilola looked at him and for no apparent reasons she opened up to him all that was going on and how she was doing this to save her relationship with him. He said not another word as he picked up the telephone and called the receptionist to direct all other patients to the other doctors as he was going to be a bit busy. Muyiwa didn’t know what he was doing but he was certain that he couldn’t let her go through with the abortion. Not only was she beautiful with her nervousness as she told her story, but she was doing it for all the wrong reasons. How could she be willing to abort for a guy that cheated on her and is just a boyfriend? What if he ends up not marrying her? As these thoughts coursed through him, he started speaking to her and lost consciousness of time. When they finally finished, he realized she had spent two hours in his office but he was glad that he had been able to change her mind. As she made to leave, they exchanged contacts so he could check in on her and help as the pregnancy developed. It was now about three days since Gbade had gone back to the States and she was feeling a bit depressed. Things hadn’t gone well after she told him that she couldn’t go through the abortion and had decided to keep the baby. His attitude towards her had been cold and distant and even on the day he was to leave, he had barely brushed a kiss on her lips before he was hurrying up. She had waited till the flight departed before letting the tears flow. She cried all the way home and went straight for the bath where she soaked herself in her favourite scent and cried some more. Muyiwa’s call came the next day after Gbade’s departure and they had fixed an appointment for him to come over this evening. Damilola couldn’t help admit it that she found the doctor interesting but there was nothing she could do about that. She was in a relationship, pregnant for another man and an emotional wreck so now wasn’t the time to go after a crush. When the bell rang at past five, she quickly looked at her reflection in the mirror before going to answer the bell. Muyiwa was standing there with his shirt half out of his trouser and the first two buttons undone giving her a peek of his white singlet. He gave her a tired smile as she took his bag and closed the door after him. “I am sorry about my appearance but I have been at the hospital for three days stretch now and haven’t had any good rest,” as they both sat on the couch. She could see he was really tired and she felt bad that he had had to come over instead of going home straight to rest. Thank God she had cooked something! She quickly went to the kitchen and dished the jollof rice she had made. He protested feebly as she invited him to the dining table but she was not having any of that. They talked as he ate and she found out he had a girlfriend he had been going steady with for about a year now. Telling him about Gbade seemed very natural and they talked without realizing how far the day was spent. Muyiwa was shocked to see that it was already eight-thirty pm and he asked to take his leave. He promised to see her the following week and as he drove off, he shook his head in wonder. Damilola was certainly an interesting woman and he could see clearly that she loved this Gbade guy, if only the bastard could see that. Some guys were just too blind to recognize the good placed in front of them. As he drove into his compound about an hour later, he picked out his cell phone to call his girlfriend Halimat, he wasn’t going to be another blind guy. [Excerpt from Episode 3: Damilola urged him on as he pounded into her with all the fury of a man in heat and as he branded her with his seed before collapsing against her, she held him to her and cried silently. Kissing her tears away softly, he whispered “I am here now Damilola, we are going to be fine! I love you.” In a shaky voice, she whispered “I love you too.”] It was three weeks since Gbade arrival in Nigeria and of the three weeks they had been at loggerheads for about two. The last one week had been peaceful and nothing but bliss. Damilola was pretty certain that he was going to propose before he returned back to the United States in another week. Their loved had grown stronger than ever and she was happy they had been able to overcome the hurdle of the cheating. She was preparing his breakfast when she suddenly felt dizzy and had to quickly hold onto the refrigerator door to keep her balance. Her vision clouded for some few seconds and then passed as quickly as it had come. She dismissed it as one of those spells and made a mental note to use an anti-malaria drug. She quickly dished out the steaming porridge and vegetables and made for the dining table where a patient Gbade was waiting. Just as she was about to drop the food, the dizziness swept over her again and the food dropped out of her hand and landed on the table with a bang, In a flash Gbade was out of his seat and he caught her just as she swooned against the chair. He pressed his face anxiously close to hers as he asked if she was alright. Offering him a weak smile, she disengaged herself and answered she was fine. He shook his head in concern and told her to go have her bath as they were going to the hospital after his breakfast. “Do you realize a lot of people kill themselves by not being more concerned about their health? Even if you feel fine again, you should have a routine checkup.” Damilola was silent throughout the drive to the hospital as she had an inclining of what could be wrong with her. She wringed her hands together unconsciously as her mind flashed to about three weeks before Gbade’s arrival. She had run into her ex John and he had casually invited her to hang out with him for a drink and she had agreed reluctantly. John had always been an affable person and it wasn’t long before they were laughing like old lovebirds once again. Their relationship had lasted about seven months before she quit because he barely had her time. He was now dating a white girl named Trisha and he invited her for dinner to officially meet Trisha that night. She had not given it a second thought before she agreed and she went to his house that night with nothing but innocence in mind. The night wore on and Trisha didn’t show up, to cut a long story short, she ended up drinking more than she should have and somehow she woke up in his bed the following morning. It had been her little secret and she had run off like ma sacred rabbit back into its hole. John had been very apologetic about it and respected her relationship status even while admitting he still had feelings for her. Was she about to pay the price for that one day? It was too soon for her to have gotten pregnant for Gbade so it had to be John. Gbade’s face was a mask of rage and hurt as he stared furiously at Damilola with all the veins stretching tautly in his temple. His little Miss Perfect wasn’t so perfect at all. How could she have gotten pregnant for another man? He had been cheating but he hadn’t impregnated another woman. Dammit! She was the one he loved and wanted to spend the rest of his life with but she had been too busy spreading her legs for another man. He was an African man and was allowed to have more than one woman but she wasn’t. He ran his hand through his hair with the frustration oozing from his every pore and taking her by the arms, he shook her violently. “How could you Damilola. I totally understand if you couldn’t stay off sex but get pregnant? Does he do it better than me? Is he richer? Is he more handsome? Tell me Dammy.” His betrayed expression made the tears come more freely as Dammy sobs rent the air and she made no move to stop them. In a teary whispered she answered “Gbade I am sorry. It was a mistake, it wasn’t mean to happen, I was drunk.” This only seemed to infuriate him even more as he bellowed “Drunk! I have always told you I don’t like you drinking, now look where that has gotten us. How would you feel if Mirabel showed up pregnant? Tell me.” Dammy bowed her head and allowed him shout at her. She totally understood how he felt; it must be ten times worse than the way she had felt when she found out about Mirabel. She wished she could comfort him but she didn’t know how. Everything she said or tried to do only seemed to upset him more and in that moment she decided the baby had to go to save her relationship. Pushing aside her hair from eyes, she looked at him with red-rimmed eyes and said quietly “I will fix this Gbade.” To be Continued Keep updated, follow on Twitter and Instagram @iamposhkid. I may have lived in Lagos my entire life but that didn’t mean that I knew every place in the city. However that didn’t mean I wasn’t aware of the on-goings in the different parts of the metropolitan state. It is common knowledge by now for any citizen that has been in Lagos for a reasonable amount of time to know that Ajegunle or AJ City as it popular called is considered one of the slum parts of Lagos. Although I had heard and read countless stories about the shanties in Ajegunle, the infamous area boys and their notorious activities, I had never witnessed it firsthand though I am a person that is always on the go. I had no business there to justify my going and my curiosity to witness poverty and the much talked about display of raw talent hadn’t been piqued well enough. I was more accustomed to the more Behind and lush environs of the Island and Mainland so it was only natural that I was very interested when a friend finally invited me to AJ city for a visit. Skeptical about the nefarious activities, I dropped my expensive android phone home and replaced it with my less sophisticated Nokia 210 phone. My reasoning simply being even if I came into an attack, I wouldn’t be losing much in terms of valueables. My friend was quick to laugh at me and tried convincing me that things weren’t as bad as people made it to seem but I wasn’t taking any chances. The bus ride to AJ city was quite smooth and uneventful with the passengers in the bus chatting gaily and while the bus conveyed us to our destination. Considering I had no companion, I took to blasting loud music into my eardrums through my headset and then the real ordeal began. As we all dropped at Ajegunle bus-stop, I looked around in confusion at the sea of faces swarming around me. Everywhere seemed so busy and the usual Lagos rush could be seen all over the place. It was a market with dangerously big buses and lorries passing in unimaginably tight spaces. I had my heart in my throat whenever any came too close for comfort; this was pure hell for someone like me suffering from megalocophobia. My fear for big vehicles heightened then with the kind of close proximity that they drove past and such reckless speed in such little space that wares, humans and vehicles juggled for. My friend had said that I would find a bus going to Coconut-Tinker easily but as I stopped one mean face after the other, they kept on giving me contradicting directions till I finally realized I wasn’t going to get anywhere if I kept asking. My white jalamia which I had worn with the day being a Friday was soiled in many places by now and I was sweating profusely with my handkerchief powerless against the merciless rays of the sun. it was surprising that the weather which had all been rainy the day before could be so sunny the next; this was supposed to be the rainy season for cripes sake. When I couldn’t take the merry-go-round directions that I was getting any longer I decided to just get a bike to where I was going and of course the Nigerian syndrome came in. The bike man knew I wasn’t familiar with the environs so charged an exorbitant fee which I only gladly paid comforting myself that so long as he got me to my destination safely. A hell of a ride I must say, bumpy roads with potholes everywhere and children in panties dashing about the place. In all fairness some of the houses looked quite new and expensive while the next door neighbor would have a dilapidating structure sometimes not bigger than a cubicle as house. To me it was a case of the oppressed oppressing a less fortunate oppressed. Mercifully I got to my destination after hanging on to the rear fonder of the bike for dear life so as not to tumble off or when I had to raise my legs high to avoid the puddles of water mixed with dirt and garbage everywhere. I had just stepped to the front of my friend’s crib which thankfully wasn’t looking like it was going to collapse at the slightest blast of a wind when a bike sped by and splashed the concoction of water and God knows what else on my jalamia. I stared in shock and dismay at my outfit and right then and there I wanted to scream or throw something at someone. My friend was having a hard time holding back his laughter and when I gave him a hard look, he simply said: “Welcome to AJ city Poshkid.” P.S. This post isn’t in any way written to ridicule anybody or place but simply to draw attention to parts of Lagos that needs attention. Keep updated, follow on Twitter and Instagram @iamposhkid. Living the life of an undergraduate is not such an easy task in Nigeria. From hectic hours of lectures to many hours devoted on projects, assignments and still trying to find time for extracurricular activities, one would expect that a balanced diet can help replenish all the energy. However this post gives a quick rundown of some food combinations that students take to keep body and soul together. Garri and Groundnut: If you didn’t take garri and groundnut as a university undergraduate, it means you are probably from a really wealthy family. Garri and groundnut is the Nigerian student’s answer to cornflakes and even the rich kids are sometimes soaking garri for drinking. Garri and groundnut most especially becomes a saving grace for many students that exhaust their allowances before the end of semester and they have no other option than to “shack” garri. Bread and Beans: Who needs burger when you can have bread and beans instead? The Nigerian students have once again been able to conveniently replace the luxury of burger with bread and beans. After consuming bread and beans in the morning, you are certain of saving lunch money and having only dinner. All you need during the day is to keep consuming water, bread and beans holds your stomach strong like cement. Noodles with Yam or Bread:What faster meal is there to cook if not noodles, it takes between ten to fifteen minutes to get your noodles ready and have enough time to dash off for classes. However the problem with noodles is that it doesn’t sustain you for long hence the combination with yam or bread which contains enough starch to keep you going for hours. It may seem strange watching a student consume noodles with yam or bread but it is an effective strategy against hunger. Garri (Eba) and Beans: Beans is a favourite among Nigerian students so don’t be surprised that it keeps coming up on this list. Beans is a source of protein so it is easy to combine it with garri which is carbohydrate. This time around, it is not soaked garri we are talking about and it holds your stomach strong. Yoruba students often claim that nothing beats a meal of cold ‘eba’ and beans in the morning. Concoction Rice:Concoction rice is one of the most common foods among Nigerian students. With a shortage of ingredients unlike when you are cooking jollof rice from the comfort of your home, concoction rice is an alternative to concoction rice and more often than not, the effort of many students joined together. It is usually made with palm oil to give it colouring and you can garnish it with pieces of fish or meat if you can afford it. A group of students gathered over a pot of concoction rice is a common sight in the school hostels. The world we live in has seen a lot of changes take place over the centuries and conventions and norms broken. Remaining a burning issue is the question of whether a woman should propose to a man. Women have the fantasies of someday having a Mr. Right go down on his knees with a diamond encrusted ring to ask them to marry him. Why all this is good and cool, here are five reasons why women should start proposing to men. What A Man Can Do A Woman Can Do Better: This is the 21st Century and there is no doubt that virtually everyone has heard the popular saying that ‘what a man can do a woman can do better?’ In this modern times, women continue to fight for equality and that accounts for why women are so successful in many male dominated fields today. Taking this maxim into your love life isn’t such a farfetched idea. Rather than wait for the conventional marriage proposal of waiting for him to go on his knees and pop the question, you can decide to save him the trouble and do it yourself. In doing this, you have to make sure that you are with the right person and both of you are ready to make that important step of leading your relationship into a marriage. It Makes You a Virtuous Woman: There is something more appealing with a woman that proposes to a man she loves than one who deliberately traps a man into a marriage. Not only do you know whether he truly wants to be with you, both of you can make adequate plans for the future. Many women believe in the wrong notion that a baby would make a man love them, a baby is not the only thing that makes a marriage work. Men Wants to Be Pampered: Just like little boys like to be dotted on and adored by their mums, men also want to be pampered by the women they are dating. Perhaps he is the one always taking you out on dates, does all the cuddling and treating you like a baby but the truth is sometimes men also want to be treated like babies. He wants all the massages, special attention, care and pampering as much as you do and he probably deserves it as well. Taking the initiative to propose to your man shows how much you care. Set for the right mood and atmosphere and things should go smoothly with your proposal. Time Isn’t on a Woman’s Side: While a man can afford to delay marriage to a later date in his life, women do not have the luxury of time. Biological clocks are ticking and of course the older a lady gets, the less likelihood of attracting a mate of her choice gets so if you believe you are with Mr. Right and for one reason or the other he isn’t flashing an engagement ring just yet, the issue of time is good enough a reason for you to take the reins and charge. It Speaks of a Liberated and Confident Woman: It takes a lot of courage to break the norm and ask a guy to marry you but it is also an admirable trait. Asking a man to marry you speaks of a liberated woman who is confident enough to know what she wants and does not hesitate to get it. In exhibiting this trait it is advisable not to come off as too pushy or aggressive in nature. Make your proposal in a cool and confident manner. [Excerpt from Episode 2: Just then, the phone shrilled and she opened her eyes inquiringly, it was Gbade’s phone and she wondered who could be calling by 11:30 at night. He gave her a quick kiss on the lips as he rolled away from her and picked up his phone. Mumbling incoherently she leaned over his shoulders to nib at his ears playfully but paused as she saw the caller id. Mirabel!] He stared at her sheepishly as she fixed him with an icy look, she folded her arms under her naked breasts and he nodded apologetically as he answered the phone. The effrontery of Gbade! Fuming silently she stood up from the bed and snatched her bra that had been discarded in the heat of passion from the floor. She stalked out of the room with all the anger clear in her body and slammed the door behind her for emphasis. He was cheating and he was rubbing it to her face. That was adding insult to the injury and she wasn’t so sure she could take that. She was a beautiful woman that guys found attractive, she could easily have any man she wanted yet here she was feeling blue over a guy putting her in a love triangle. She headed straight to the liquor cabinet; she poured herself a glass of vodka and downed it in one gulp squeezing her eyes shut. She poured another glass and with the bottle in hand, she went straight into the living room. She wasn’t trying to get drunk but she knew Gbade didn’t like her drinking, well screw him she thought wryly. She was done pleasing him and from now on things were going to be about pleasing herself. To imagine she had turned done good prospects these past two years just for this snipe was beyond her and she felt like screaming out. Where had she gone wrong? Having had a bad history with her men, she had thought she had it right with Gbade. She stood up from the couch and paced the length on the room back and forth. She was on her fourth glass when he finally came in, “Baby I am sorry about the interruption, can we go back to bed?” She stared daggers at him and hissed to dissipate the angry retort that was forming on her lips. She had to be careful; her tongue was venom so she had to watch what she said in the heat of anger. Dripping with a sweetness se was far from, she answered sarcastically “Oh really, is the other woman done with you now? Don’t you be in a rush little sweetheart, tell her she can have more of your time. Damilola isn’t in a rush to have you back.” a frown formed on his handsome features and he asked “Have you been drinking again Dammy, you know I don’t like it when you do. Please go brush your teeth and let’s get back into bed.” “Screw you!” she replied with a huff and threw the content of her glass at his face. She watched the surprise register on his face and without a backward glance, she pushed past him and went into the bedroom locking the door behind her. Let him sleep on the couch for the night for all she cared. The situation didn’t get any better over the next few days. Mirabel’s calls became more frequent and he wouldn’t stop talking to her despite all of Damilola’s pleas for him to respect her presence and stop his affair with the other woman at least until he was gone back to her. Gbade would calmly reassure her then that there was nothing between him and Mirabel as he had explained to her that Damilola was his fiancée. They had had no previous talks of marriage so when he mentioned the word fiancée, her hopes went skyrocketing. Maybe their relationship still had hopes after all? Wasn’t it a natural man’s thing for a man to cheat? Maybe she hadn’t been woman enough for him. She made enough excuses in her head to cover up for his infidelity and that night she decided to shock him by making his special delicacy while he was busy working on his laptop for a special client. She was pleased when she saw his delighted surprise and he kissed her so hard and long she was left breathless. It was like the days of old when their love story had first begun and so happy was she, she could hardly take a bite of her own food. She stared dreamily at him as he ate and when he was done, she cleared his plates without being told, playing the housewife duty. As she washed the plates in the kitchen, Gbade came behind her and wrapping his arms around her from behind nibbled on her ear. Giggling girlishly she said: “Stop it Gbade you can see I am working. You are going to get soap all over yourself.” He laughed that his laugh that sounded like water rippling from a fountain and answered. “That won’t be such a bad idea now would it?” Turning her to face him, he kissed her fully on the lips and untied her apron as he led her away from the sink. Clothes came off and trailed them to the living room, they never made it to the bedroom as turning her against the couch; he took her right there and then. Damilola urged him on as he pounded into her with all the fury of a man in heat and as he branded her with his seed before collapsing against her, she held him to her and cried silently. Kissing her tears away softly, he whispered “I am here now Damilola, we are going to be fine! I love you.” In a shaky voice, she whispered “I love you too.” To be continued For more updates, I remain @iamposhkid on Twitter and Instagram. The deaths of these individuals continue to be a shocking mystery to the people as their murders and assassinations remain unsolved. The use of mobile phones in our era has become a way of life for many as most people are unable to function properly without their phones. Often a times you will hear people say things like “I feel incomplete without my phone.” While the use of mobile phones is good and allows for convenience of communication, the following reasons will make you realize that mobile phones are killing us Brain Cancer: Many people are ignorant of the fact that mobile phones increase the risk of brain cancer as mobile phones radiations gradually damages the brain. The radiation emitted by the phones is absorbed by the brain which causes the brain tissues to heat up. The risk becomes even higher for those that sleep with their phones close to them while sleeping. Heart Risk: Did you know that the radiation of cell phones interferes with the normal functioning of the heart? Cell phones cause health complications and put its user at the risk of developing heart diseases. The habit of keeping your mobile phone in the front pocket of your shirt should also be avoided as the radiation affects the red blood cells. It Affects Sperm Fertility: Unlike ladies who most times have a bag to keep their phones, men usually keep their phones inside their trouser pockets. The ringing of the mobile phone however causes damaged sperm or decreased sperm concentration. When in use, mobile phones usually heat up and this increases the temperature in the groin region and sperms are known to survive in temperatures less than 4 degrees the body temperature. Bad Eyes: If you are the type that is always texting on your phone for long periods, then it is imperative that you increase the font size to twice the smallest size readable. Staring at your phone and the stress of holding it for long can lead to eye strain, headaches, dry eye and blurred vision. When you operate your phone for long periods as well, it is advisable to take at least 10 seconds intervals. Loss of Hearing: Doctors have attributed the prolonged use of mobile phones as a major reason for hearing loss for most people between the ages of 18-25. Radiations emitted by mobile phones affect the inner ear which causes hearing loss or partial deafness for people. It is best to reduce the number of time spent on the telephone, the ringer volume as well as the music level. Loss of Concentration: It is very certain that either you or someone you know is guilty of being addicted to a mobile phone. Mobile phones become an addiction for many; it is now a common sight to see many people talking on the phone or texting away while on a busy road, while driving or while having conversations with others face-to-face. In China for instance, phone addicts get to have their own sidewalks. Many become less productive just because of their mobile phone addiction, so you better think twice, do you own the phone or the phone owns you? [Excerpt from Episode 1]: …He stared at her sheepishly with the guilt all over his face, bowing his head slightly, he reached blindly for her as she evaded his touch. She ran out of the room as he called to her… He reached her just as she was about to open the door, he grabbed her and enveloped her in a hug from behind. She sagged into him with her head bowed and allowed him. “I am so sorry Dammy, really sorry.” His voice came in a hoarse whisper into her ear and she fought against the pool of tears in her eyes. The past two years had seen her warding off different men; the attractive, the ugly, the rich, the pauper wanting her to do ‘surulere.’ Her entirety had been for him and it hurt badly to know he hadn’t been on the same page. “How long has this been going on? Are there others I should know of? ” her voice was stronger than she felt as she disengaged herself from his embrace and turned to face him. She swept her unruly hair from her face as she stared at him defiantly, her eyes emotionless saucers masking all the pain and hurt coursing through her. In hushed tones, he rasped out that Mirabel was the only one and the affair had started a year after he got to America. “I tried Dammy, I really did. I held on for so long, a whole year I had control of myself. Then one morning it was like something took over me and before I knew it, Mirabel happened. I swear she means nothing to me. You are the one I love, when I think of my future, I see it with you not her. Please Dammy I know I messed up but don’t let’s destroy what we have. Please!” *********************************************************************************************************** She sat on the couch with her legs tucked under her as she pretended to read the book in her hands as Whitney Houston’s “Where Do Broken Hearts Go?” played slowly from her headset. She had gone through about ninety-four sad love songs on her phone and she was feeling as depressed and moody as the artistes must have been when they wrote such songs. She looked up as Gbade walked into the room in nothing but his briefs; he looked as handsome and fit as ever she thought to herself. She shook her head as if to dispel the thought and tried to force her concentration back to her novel and the song playing. Miley Cyrus’ “Wrecking Ball” was playing now. She sneaked a look again from under her eyes and saw that he was watching her. Quickly, she lowered her eyes and adjusted uncomfortably on the couch, unfolding her legs in the process. She gulped involuntarily as she heard him approach and cringed as she felt his cool hands on her bare thighs. She was wearing a bum short with an oversized shirt so most of her lower body was exposed, removing her reading glasses, she stared at him questioningly? He was squatting in front of her with a puppy look on his face and she could tell past two days had been rough for him as well. “Is this the end Dammy? You have barely talked to me since I arrived two days back? I can’t bear to see you like this, if you want…” he choked on his words emotionally and she felt a twinge of pity. Gbade didn’t talk much, she was the talkative and he was shy on showing emotions he felt so she knew how hard this must be for him. Without another word, she pulled him up and kissed him fully on the lips. “It’s alright baby, so long as you let her go and come back to me.” He hugged her tightly and whispered “I belong only to you Tangy baby.” She smiled then remembering his pet name for her. ********************************************************************************************************** Dammy was panting as if she had just run three miles none stop as she thrashed under Gbade. His tongue was flicking in and out of her ear which was one of her erogenous spots. She whimpered as his hands fondled her left breasts and gently. His assault on her ears with his probing tongue didn’t stop as expertly, with his other hand he slowly unbuttoned the shirt she was wearing. She was a woman in heat and she arched into him so fiercely when his finger flicked over her nipple, he paused for a second and grinned at her. Unabashed she flashed a set of pearl white teeth and groaned “It has been two years damn it! Get along with your duty soldier.” He didn’t need another urging as he bent his head and his mouth found her bare breasts, at first he flicked his tongue over her already pointed nipple and then in one quick move, he had it in his mouth and sucked gently. She thrashed wildly on the bed and moaned in pleasure, it had been too long. The wait was worth all this pleasure. She reached out her hand and grabbed at his shoulder. She traced the fine contours of his manliness down and ran her fingers lightly against the pubic hair disappearing into his briefs. He moaned against her breasts, exhaling heat that turned her on even more. She couldn’t hold back anymore, she delved inside with her hands and touched the heated rod pulsing down there. The rock hard rigidness excited her and she closed her hands around it, feeling its might. Just then, the phone shrilled and she opened her eyes inquiringly, it was Gbade’s phone and she wondered who could be calling by 11:30 at night. He gave her a quick kiss on the lips as he rolled away from her and picked up his phone. Mumbling incoherently she leaned over his shoulders to nib at his ears playfully but paused as she saw the caller id. Mirabel!
