Dona Sarkar, the chief of the Windows Insider program made it clear on Twitter last Friday that Windows Phone users can upgrade to Windows 10 Mobile freely before and after the July 29 deadline, giving users the privilege to upgrade at their convenience and install a version that is more stable than the current one.
Only devices with hardware specifications that meet the requirements of the new operating system are eligible for this offer. To truly enjoy Windows 10 Mobile, it is advisable to go for the latest Lumia 950 or 950 XL, both having Continuum and Windows Hello integrated in their operating systems.
The Redmond-based company in a blog post, shed some light on the reason why most of the older devices were not selected.
“ As Windows 10 delivers significant new innovations, many older devices are not able to successfully upgrade without an impact on the customer experience. Our goal is to only offer the Windows 10 upgrade to devices that we are confident can continue to deliver a good customer experience.
Some phone users with over 512MB of RAM have upgraded and are already enjoying the Windows 10 experience. Unsupported devices have a risky upgrade option that involves signing up for the Release Preview ring of the Insider Preview.
For all desktop users currently on Windows 7 and 8.1 version, the free upgrade offer for Windows 10 still expires on July 29.
