Lalasticlala, Seun – let this breathe abeg. This is for everyone tired of wasting transport fare on "clean" cars that turn out to be accidents waiting to happen. I’ve been following the used car market in Nigeria closely – especially how people buy and sell on WhatsApp, Instagram, and even here on Nairaland. And honestly? The number of bad cars being sold as "clean" is increasing daily. But here’s the good news: You don’t need to be a mechanic to spot most of them. Let me show you 5 red flags that even "smart" sellers try to hide. 1️⃣ The "Too Dark" Interior Photo If every interior photo looks like it was taken at 7pm with a Nokia torchlight – run. Sellers hide dash cracks, torn seats, flood damage stains, and worn-out steering wheels with bad lighting. ✅ What to do: Ask for a bright, wide-angle photo of the dashboard and seats. If they refuse or delay, remove the car from your list. 2️⃣ Panel Gaps That Don’t Match Walk to the front of the car. Look at the gap between the hood and the fender – left side vs right side. If one side is wider than the other? That car has been in a front or side collision and was poorly repaired. ✅ What to do: Compare both sides in photos before you even go for inspection. If the seller can't send clear pictures of both gaps, thank them and move on. 3️⃣ Mismatched Tyres on "Low Mileage" Cars A 2019 car with 40,000km should have tyres from the same brand – or at least the same tread depth on both front tyres. If you see Maxxis on the left front and Toyo on the right front with different wear patterns? That means the car was driven hard, possibly without regular alignment – or it was in an accident that destroyed one tyre. ✅ What to do: Ask for a photo of all four tyres (or at least the two front ones) before wasting your time. 4️⃣ The "My Brother Is the Owner" Story This one is classic Nigerian car scam 101. Seller says: "I'm just helping my uncle sell it. He travelled." Then ask: "Where is the original customs papers? Where is the proof of ownership?" If they start stammering or say "It's in the boot of the car" – you're dealing with a ghost car or a car with doubtful ownership history. ✅ What to do: Only buy from sellers who can prove they physically possess the car AND have original documents. Not photocopies. Not WhatsApp forwards. 5️⃣ Price Too Low for the Market We all love a deal. But when a 2020 Camry is listed for ₦3.5M while everyone else is selling at ₦6.5M – don't be the "I'm different" buyer. That car is either: • Accidented and repaired badly • A "cut and weld" (please don't) • Not in the seller's possession (advance fee fraud) ✅ What to do: Check current market prices from at least 5 different sources. If one listing is 40% below average, screenshot it and keep scrolling. 🧠 The Real Problem Even after you learn all these red flags – the bigger problem is where you're searching for cars. WhatsApp groups: Your listing disappears under memes by lunchtime. Instagram: Beautiful photos, but half the sellers don't even have the car. Nairaland classifieds: Decent, but no verification system. That's exactly why I started directing serious buyers and sellers to a different approach. 🔑 The Smart Move If you're tired of: • Wasting transport fare to inspect bad cars • Messaging "sellers" who don't actually own the vehicle • Fighting spam instead of finding real deals Then stop hunting for cars where everyone is pretending. There's a platform where every seller is verified and you only see cars that physically exist in Nigeria. No ghost listings. No "my brother in Canada" stories. 👉 Visit Mbior.com.ng See verified used cars in your city. Buy from real people. List your own car for free if you're selling. 📢 Final Word I didn't write this to sell you anything. I wrote it because too many Nigerians are losing money on bad cars – and it's avoidable. Bookmark this post. Share it with anyone shopping for a tokunbo or Nigerian-used car. If you have your own red flag to add, drop it below. Let's help each other.
