The entire University of Jos (UNIJOS) community was thrown into pandemonium following the invasion of the institution by gunmen, killing a police inspector and a corporal who were on guard duty at the university on Tuesday. Eyewitnesses said the gunmen numbering over 12, swooped on the security men at the permanent site of the university at about 11p.m. and fired gunshots at them and in the process killed two policemen. A security man, who was at the scene but narrowly escaped, said it was a case of hit-and-run, adding that immediately they gunned down the security men, they escaped in the same cars that brought them. The killings left the students and other members of the university community to scamper for safety before reinforcement of security men arrived the scene. The State Police Public Relation Officer, DSP Emmanuel Abuh, who confirmed the incident, said “the two policemen were killed by the gunmen where the policemen were deployed on guard duty. Abuh said men of the command have commenced full investigation into the killings and would soon track down the perpetrators of the act. He added that the inspector had put in up to 25 years in service, while corporal was a young policeman who has just started his career. He, however, refused to give their names. http://acadablog.com/armed-men-attack-unijos-kills-security-guards-on-duty/ |
http://acadablog.com/reduce-nysc-registration-fee-uniport-alumni/ The University of Port Harcourt Alumni Association has called on the authorities of the National Youth Service Corps to reduce the fee charged for the online registration of prospective corps members. The NYSC had announced a fee of N4, 000 for each fresh enlistment into the scheme. In a statement by the National President of the Uniport alumni, Mr Sampson Ngerebara, and the National Secretary, Mr. Chris Adokeme, the association wondered why unemployed fresh graduates embarking on national service should be made to pay so much money. The association contended that if the money was to be charged at all, a maximum of N1,000 should be adequate. Part of the statement read, “While we commend the board and management of the NYSC for their decision to save corps members long distance travelling time back to their schools and the directorate headquarters, we regard the amount demanded for registration as excessive. “Considering the country’s economic situation, a fee of N1, 000 should suffice for this purpose. We urge the authorities of the NYSC not to visit the prospective corps members with unnecessary hardship.” The association also asked whether the NYSC would pay the funds collected from the exercise into the Federation Account in the spirit of accountability. It regretted that critical stakeholders like the National Association of Nigerian Students and the alumni associations of institutions of higher learning to which these corps members now belong were not consulted in the process of taking such a fundamental decision, and advised the NYSC to guard against such a lapse in future. |
