One of Nigeria's oldest and best highlife musician Fatai Olagunju alias " Rolling Dollar " has died.
Mr.Olagunju died in Lagos according to sources from family. Sources told Saharareporters that Mr. Olagunju fell ill during a US tour last month, May, and had to be rushed back to Nigeria. He died at the hospital early this morning. Mr. Olagunju was 86 years old. Mr. Rolling Dollar will be buried in Ikorodu Lagos today according to Muslim rites.

Twenty-eight years after scholarships were last awarded in Oyo State, Governor Abiola Ajimobi on Tuesday presented scholarship awards worth N100m to some indigent students of the state. The governor said the scholarships that were presented at the House of Chiefs, was for year 2011/2012. The beneficiaries of the bursary/scholarship awards were final year students of universities and polytechnics and post-graduate students from tertiary institutions in Nigeria and abroad as well as those from colleges of aviation. The governor, while presenting the cheque,described the occasion as memorable, saying it was the first time that bursary awards would be given to students in the state in the last 28 years. He said, “Without mincing words, no nation can hope to make any meaningful progress without sound and qualitative education. Martin Luther King posited that if you want to keep a man in perpetual slavery, do not give him education. “It is with this premise in mind that the state government, under the present administration, has always made the education of our children a high priority. “We have touched every local government area with meaningful and pupil-oriented projects.”

The delta state police Command on Monday arrested five members of a prominent kidnapping syndicate . In a press release on Monday in Asaba , Commissioner of Police , Ikechukwu Aduba , stated “the members of the kidnapping syndicate had been terrorising Warri/Ughelli locations in the state in recent times” . A group, Anti-Corruption Network, has asked the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Aloma Mukhtar, to reverse the appointment of the 12 new judges appointed for the National Industrial Court. In a petition by its Executive Secretary, Dino Melaye, and addressed to Mukhtar, who doubles as the Chairman of the National Judicial Council, the group alleged that the Judges had no considerable knowledge and experience in the law and practice of industrial relations and employment conditions The petition, entitled, ‘Illegal Appointment of Judges of the National Industrial Court’, read, “We have confirmed that the National Judicial Council under your able and incorruptible leadership has recently approved the appointment of 12 lawyers as judges of the National Industrial Court. “We wish to draw your attention to the illegality of the appointment as none of the 12 candidates is qualified under Section 2(4) of the National Industrial Court Act, which states as follows: “A person shall not be eligible to hold the office of a judge of the court unless: The person is a legal practitioner in Nigeria and has been so qualified for a period of not less than ten years and has considerable knowledge and experience in the law and practice of industrial relations and employment conditions in Nigeria; or he is a graduate of a recognised university.”

Stealing a N50 ,000 Sony Ericsson mobile phone which belongs to Governor Rauf Aregbesola ,Kelvin Ighodalo, a 31-year-old has been sentenced to 45-year imprisonment by an Osogbo High Court . Ighodalo stole the mobile phone from the pocket of Aregbesola on November 27 , 2010 , at the time the governor was being inaugurated at Government Technical College , Osogbo . Justice Oyejide Falola , who read the case , found Ighodalo guilty on six counts , which included conspiracy , stealing and fraudulent activity . He was sentenced to 10-year imprisonment for the first three counts and five-years each of the last three which included impersonation , obtaining property by falsehood and collusion . Falola , who ruled that Ighodalo deserved the jail term , held that the convict used the mobile phone to receive N500 , 000 from the Owa of Ilesa , Oba Adekunle Aromolaran , whereas he received N200 , 000 from Mr Shengen Rahman , an associate of the governor . The jail term , which Falola pronounced will run simultaneously , implies that Ighodalo is going to spend the next decade behind bars . Assistant principal state counsel , Mr Biodun Badiora , explained to the court that the convict had served six-year imprisonment in Ikoyi prison custody associated with a murder case in 2005 . Counsel to Ighodalo , Mr . Ameachi Ngwu , prayed the court to commit him to community service , emphasizing that the convict must not be incarcerated but instead be located where citizens could see him as a convict .
