My Plea

We bend our knees to darkness whenever the power goes away, lighting a tiny candle and waiting patiently for another day. We buy fuel for our small business shops just to turn around and buy the same costly fuel to power our home generators at night. Some try to endure by clinging to power banks, but now a simple power bank costs far more than an "I pass my neighbor" generator ever did. From rice to garri, and garri to swallow, we stretch our tiny plates, canceling travel plans and resigning ourselves to a heavy, crushing fate. The fuel price climbs into the clouds, transport fares arise without mercy, yet we squeeze our thin, dry pockets with quiet, weary eyes. We learn to eat just once a day, to patch, stretch, and manage merely to keep from joining the dead.
​While the common man bleeds, the leaders who seek our votes never bend or adjust their ways. Whenever they fall sick, they fly abroad to foreign hospitals for treatment, leaving our own medical centers so bare and ill-equipped that they cannot even properly care for a rat. They ride in long convoys of tinted glass that never seem to end, buying new jets and luxury mansions on endless international loans, building white elephant projects upon our breaking bones. The old roads lie unpatched, the hospitals stand empty, yet new vanity projects rise without a single thought for human care. They offer our youth student loans only to shackle them with lifelong debt, enslaving young minds in nets of bondage before their journey has even begun. Our minimum wage remains an insult compared to other nations, while security crumbles and blood stains our soil.
​Yet the most bitter sorrow comes from the brothers in our own streets who clap for this mismanagement while eating crumbs of meat. The greedy, selfish enablers sell their children's birthrights, supporting the very people who starve us and extinguish our light. They endure the same brutal pain, pay the same absurd prices, and walk the same broken roads, yet defend their destroyers simply because of political party, tribe, or religion. People are killed, kidnappers roam free, and right now, innocent children, parents, brothers, and friends remain held captive in the bush. Yet so many stay silent, turning a blind eye and pretending it does not matter just because it is not their own family in the bush. They call evil a virtue, praise the hands that bite them, and join the taskmasters in dimming our collective future.
​It is no wonder our brightest youth pack their bags to japa, searching for dignity beneath colder foreign skies. When home becomes a cage of thorns where safety cannot stand, the young are forced to run and leave their native land while leaders preach patience and hide from public sight.
​Listen closely, my people, for the 2027 election is calling sharp and clear. Soon, they will return with belly-fulls of lies and bags of stomach infrastructure, hoping to buy your vote for four more years of brokenness. They will play the tribal card and sing religious tunes, hoping you forget the hunger beneath their golden spoons.
​Shine your eyes, my brothers; shine your eyes, my sisters. Say "enough is enough" to the pain we have borne for so long. If you have a conscience, vote right! Do not sell your future for a cup of salt or a fleeting promise. Look at your empty kitchen, look at the unlit lamp, and look at your children's eyes. Let your ballot be your weapon, and let your conscience guide your hand to take back our land and restore the dignity of the common man.
