For the re-run elections to be held on the same day, the list and personal particulars of candidates have been published before the 2023 General Election. [b]The re-run elections are conducted pursuant to the orders of the Election Petition Appeal Tribunals. They are not fresh elections open to new/disqualified candidates which obviates the need to publish their personal particulars again.
This last paragraph of the memo should answer that especially the bolded. No need publishing those ones again.

Would the PDP participate in Plateau North Senatorial and Jos North/Bassaa Federal Constituency Rerun

Politics / INEC Publishes Final List Of Candidates For By-elections In Nine States by Addme: 7:03am On Jan 18
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has published the final list of candidates for the by-elections in nine states.

The by-elections are to be conducted due to the death or resignation of members of the national and state houses of assembly.

The polls are scheduled to be held on February 3 in two senatorial districts (Ebonyi south and Yobe east) and four federal constituencies (Shanga/Ngaski/Yauri federal constituency of Kebbi state, Surulere 1 federal constituency of Lagos state, Akoko north-east/Akoko north-west federal constituency of Ondo, and Jalingo/Yorro/Zing federal constituency of Taraba).

By-elections will also be held in three state constituencies (Guma 1 state constituency of Benue, Chibok constituency of Borno state and Chikun constituency of Kaduna state).

In a statement on Wednesday, Sam Olumekun, INEC national commissioner and chairman, information voter education committee, said the list was published in the commission’s state offices and on its website according to the provision of section 29(3) of the Electoral Act, 2022.

“We appeal to Nigerians to scrutinize the personal particulars (Form EC9 and academic credentials) of the candidates,” the statement reads.

“Any aspirant who participated in his/her party primaries with reasonable grounds to believe that the information provided by the candidate is false can challenge the nomination in a Federal High Court as provided in Section 29(5) of the Electoral Act 2022.

“For clarity, this publication only applies to the forthcoming bye-elections as they are fresh elections for which political parties conducted primaries and nominated their candidates.

"For the re-run elections to be held on the same day, the list and personal particulars of candidates have been published before the 2023 General Election.

“The re-run elections are conducted pursuant to the orders of the Election Petition Appeal Tribunals. They are not fresh elections open to new/disqualified candidates which obviates the need to publish their personal particulars again.”

Crime / Tokunbo Afikuyomi: How Scammers Hacked My Phone, Defrauded My Friends by Addme: 3:36am On Jan 15
Tokunbo Afikuyomi, a former senator, has narrated how fraudsters hacked his phone and deceived his friends to transfer millions of naira to them.

The former senator said the scammers on Saturday morning “temporarily seized control” of his WhatsApp, a messaging application.

Afikuyomi, in a statement on Sunday, said the hackers sent fraudulent messages to his friends demanding money on his behalf.

The former senator said some of his friends called him via the telephone to confirm the fraudulent request while others “innocently sent” millions of naira to the accounts provided by the scammers.

“I immediately complained to the relevant security and regulatory agencies and I thank the anti-fraud unit of the police for springing into action immediately,” the former senator said.

“Their efforts led to identifying some of the account numbers and the details of the respective owners through which the scammers collected various sums of money.

“The security agents are also already deploying technology to geo-locate the perpetrators. Investigations by relevant agencies are still ongoing.”

Afikuyomi said he had suspended the use of his WhatsApp phone number until after the completion of the investigation.

“I must at this stage express my dismay with the lack of due diligence in the bank account opening and maintenance system in our country,” he said.

“This is what has come out so far in the investigation of this phone hacking scam.

“The scammers opened so many bank accounts without supplying the banks with the necessary security checks and details required by the law.

“In the same manner, it is now obvious that some of the Over the Top Media Services (OTT) providers do not fully comply with the provision of Nigeria’s Data Privacy and Protection Laws.”

The former senator advised Nigerians to be more careful while responding to messages from acquaintances.

Politics / Kidnapped Sisters: Police Spokesperson Adejobi Under Fire Over Comments by Addme: 3:14am On Jan 15
Muyiwa Adejobi, the spokesperson of the Nigeria police force (NPF), has come under fire on social media over his “don’t cry more than the bereaved” comment on the abduction of six sisters in Abuja.

The abduction of the six sisters and the killing of Nabeeha, one of the girls, have been in the news and trending on various social media platforms.

The girls were kidnapped alongside their father from their residence at Zuma 1 in the Bwari area council of the federal capital territory (FCT) on January 5.

The abductors released the father but the remaining five girls are still in captivity while the corpse of Nabeeha has been released to the family.

Commenting on a post by Bashir Ahmad, former special assistant on digital communications to ex-President Muhammad Buhari, Adejobi asked him or the family members of the girls to “relate with the police codedly”.

He also said the police have been working on the matter but needed “some info”, adding that they will adopt all measures to ensure the girls are rescued.

Responding to the comment of the force spokesperson, a social media user asked “can’t you reach them as you said?” but Adejobi responded by saying “Don’t cry more than the bereaved. OK”.

A lot of Nigerians on on social media have criticised his comment and noted that the police can not provide security to citizens

Politics / Crisis Hits Plateau Assembly As Speaker Vows Not To Recognise 16 APC Members by Addme: 5:17pm On Jan 14
The fate of 16 members of the Plateau State House of Assembly is now hanging in the balance as the Speaker, Gabriel Dewan, has said that he would only recognise eight members of the House.

Dewan, the only member of the Young Peoples Party (YPP), was elected the Speaker in the wake of the sack of 16 PDP lawmakers by the court.

The Appeal Court had sacked 16 members elected under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on the premise that the party had no structure as at the time they were nominated as candidates and, therefore, lacked the legitimacy to be sponsored by the party.

The court had asked the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to withdraw their Certificates of Return and issue them to the APC members, which directive the electoral body has obeyed.

However, last Friday’s judgment of the Supreme Court seems to have stoked fresh political crisis in the state.

The court had overruled the appellate court by saying that the sack of the 16 PDP members was unjustified.

Justice Emmanuel Agim, who read the unanimous judgment of the five-man panel, allowed the appeal filed by Governor Caleb Mutfwang against his sack by the Court of Appeal.
Justice Agim had contended that the All Progressives Congress (APC) and its candidate have no locus standi to have delved into the internal affairs of another political party.

He regretted that unfortunately some people had suffered from the unjustified judgment of the Appeal Court.

Justice John Okoro, in his own summation said: “My worry is that a lot of people have suffered as a result of this.”

The judgment appeared to have been emboldened the Speaker to state that he does not recognise the APC members who benefitted from the judgment.

Dewan speaking to newsmen in Jos said that the pronouncement of the Supreme Court, which is the highest court of the land, had cancelled the earlier position of the lower court, stressing that “as it stands now only eight are recognised as members in the assembly.”

He said that as Speaker that he is a leader for all irrespective of political party as he would carry everybody along in his leadership despite coming from the opposition and a minority party, the YPP.

According to him, the 16 lawmakers who were affirmed by the Court of Appeal would not be recognised for now as apex court was emphatic that the judgment of the Appeal Court was faulty and an abuse of court processes, pointing out that the 16 PDP lawmakers who were earlier sacked had appealed for the determination of the Supreme Court judgment as well as now calling for their judgment to be upturned by the highest court of the land, including that of the National Assembly members

Corruption cuts across all ministries including the "not so juicy" ones and it doesn't start with Edu or this government.

The problem is when the government of the day shows no tenacity to at least curb it to the least but so far Tinubu has not only listened to Nigerians but also quickly shown leadership trait to manage it and axe whoever that's involved.
Kudos to Mr. President, his actions have shown other ministers that it won't be business as usual.

Business / Banks Push Nigeria’s Stock To World’s Second Best-performing Spot In 2024 by Addme: 6:20am On Jan 13
The Nigerian Exchange all-share index (ASI) has appreciated by 11 percent or 8,269 basis points year‐to-date, placing it second in the world behind Argentina.

The development comes as Nigerian equities surpassed their European, Middle Eastern, and African counterparts in 2024 — driven by pension funds and institutional investors anticipating record profits from lenders booking revaluation gains.

According to Bloomberg‘s report, compared with a less than 2 percent advance for the MSCI Emerging Markets (EMEA) Index over the same period, the NGX rose almost 60 percent in the past year.

Banking stocks have driven gains, with the banking index up 16 percent this year and 138.09 percent over the past 12 months.

So far in 2024, Access Holdings Plc is up 21 percent, while Zenith Bank Plc is up 11.3 percent, and Guaranty Trust Holding Company is up by 14.3 percent.

The report noted that negative real yields on the nation’s fixed-income securities have also made equities relatively more attractive in the country.

MAJOR TIER-1 BANKS JOIN TRILLIONAIRE
CLUB’

In the present month, banks have sustained gains, with major tier-1 banks crossing the N1 trillion naira market capitalisation mark.

On January 9, 2024, Access Holdings had surpassed the N1 trillion market capitalisation mark.

The market capitalisation of the United Bank for Africa (UBA), on January 8, also hit N1.02 trillion, from the N990.07 billion traded on January 5, 2023.

Also on January 9, FBN Holdings closed trading with a N1.02 trillion market capitalisation, rising from N933.27 billion after its share value jumped from N26 (the previous day) to N28.6.

FBN Holdings had crossed the N1 trillion mark on December 6, 2023, for the first time, after recording N1.05 trillion market valuation from N960.19 billion.

However, the bank exited the trillionaire stock list the next day.
