FLASHBACK: From Delta to Lagos, How #EndSARS Protest Began | Foundation for investigative Journalism Although Lagos quickly became the epicentre of the October 2020 #EndSARS protest, it started in Ughelli town, Delta State, when angry young people pursued police officers fleeing in a white SUV belonging to a man they allegedly shot and left to die by the road. “We dey follow them o!” One of the men chasing the officers screamed. The SUV ran left and right, outpacing other vehicles on the highway. It was October 3, 17 days before Nigerian troops opened fire on hundreds of peaceful #EndSARS demonstrators at the Lekki Tollgate in Lagos. Exactly one year earlier, men of the Police Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) had stopped Idonreyin Obong, an Android engineer at Paystack, while returning from work around 11 pm. Seeing a Macbook and an iPhone in his car, they called him an internet fraudster and ordered him on their bus. If he did not pay N800,000, the officers alerted Obong, they would shoot him. https://fij.ng/article/flashback-from-delta-to-lagos-how-endsars-protest-began/

SPECIAL REPORT: The State of Security in Lagos 365 Days After Post-#EndSARS Carnage | Foundation for investigative Journalism When Olumuyiwa Adejobi, on October 21, 2020, decried attacks on police formations across Lagos State by mischief makers and hoodlums, the then Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the state’s police command foresaw security threats and operational challenges for the force. Adejobi, while lamenting the infiltration of the #EndSARS protests by these hoodlums who took advantage of the situation to burn and destroy over 10 police structures and buildings, said at the time that the command would need to commit more to patrols and rebuilding. He said, “The implication of this is that money that has been set aside to do other projects and develop certain areas will have to be channelled into repairing these damaged stations". https://fij.ng/article/special-report-the-state-of-security-in-lagos-365-days-after-post-endsars-carnage/

Was There Really a Massacre at the Lekki Tollgate? | Foundation for Investigative Journalism In my 17 years in and around journalism, this was the first time I asked myself if a story I personally investigated was really true. It had no precedent — that I invested time and energy n digging out a story, then I wrote it, got it published and, in the weeks and months that followed, asked myself if what I’d spent time investigating had indeed happened. This explains the equanimity with which I view those who still ask — out of genuine naivety or incredulity rather than blind party leaning — if people indeed died at the Lekki tollgate on October 20, 2020. If I, the journalist, sometimes felt that way, I can understand the plight of the doubting Thomases in the public.
