On the eve of June 6, an army of Fulani marauders enveloped Ìgàngàn, an agrarian town in the Ibarapa region of Oyo State, killing 11 people in their sleep and burning multi-million naira properties to dust. Nine locals had a shave with death, suffering life-threatening deformities which some of them described as “worse than death”. Amidst the rumours of an imminent siege, investigative journalist Gabriel Ogunjobi visited Ìgàngàn to document how the survivors were picking up their pieces.

PoliticsAnambra Residents Flee Ahead Of Election by Adebeeyi(op): 8:21pm On Oct 29, 2021
Ahead of the November 6 gubernatorial election in Anambra State, residents have begun to flee to other states.

Speaking with FIJ, residents who have now taken refuge in other southeastern states said they fled Anambra for fear of violence during the election.

“I’m not voting. I am in Imo already; I am staying with my friend now. Many of my friends have also left that place,” one of them said.

Other residents who spoke with FIJ from their new locations said with the threats posed by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and the show of force by security agencies, they feared a bloodbath.

Several residents of Ananmbra who are still in the state said they had travel plans.

“I will be leaving Nnewi next week because of this election,” someone told FIJ on the phone. “The east is hot. I’m not even going to any state around here; I’m travelling far.”

Students at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) also told FIJ that they had received calls from family members begging for their exits from the state, and many left in the later hours of Friday, after their first-semester examination, while others said they would leave on Tuesday, after IPOB’s Monday sit-at-home is observed.

FIJ earlier exclusively reported that IPOB and its combat arm, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), were listed as top threats by the police ahead of the election.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Friday revealed that there were no registered voters in 86 polling units in the state ahead the election.

FamilyAfter Eviction By Brother-In-Law, Imo Court Returns Widow To Husband's House by Adebeeyi(op): 6:05pm On Oct 27, 2021
A High Court in Owerri, Imo State, has ruled in favour of Rosena Akuwodor, a widow with four children, who was wrongfully evicted from her residence by Maxwell Akuwodor, her brother-in-law.

On October 20, Justice K. A. Ojiako, the presiding judge, set aside the August 31 ruling that enabled Maxwell throw out his sister-in-law and her children, barely a year after the demise of Reginald Akuwodor, his brother and Rosena’s husband.

On September 4, FIJ had reported how Maxwell, with the writ of execution he had secured, and in the company of police officers, stormed the house in Umuokoji Umuorii Uratta, Owerri North Local Government, to evict Rosena and her four children.

Maxwell, 84, had argued that he was the rightful owner of the land on which Rosena husband’s house and a six-apartment structure belonging to late Nelson Okuoma Akuwodor, the father of Maxwell and late Reginald, were built.

Although his writ of execution had stated that the structure built by Nelson be vacated in Maxwell’s favour, while carrying out the order, Maxwell had gone ahead to eject the occupants of his brother’s building as well.

Following the ruling, the compound gate was reopened by the court on October 27 and Rosena and her four children returned home.

“The eviction was a horrible experience for mum, my siblings and myself. We lost some of our belongings to rain when we could not find a suitable place to keep them,” Ahunna Victory, one of the daughters of late Reginald, told FIJ.

“Right now, I am very happy that the initial ruling has been set aside and justice has prevailed. For two months, my family was rendered homeless because of our wrongful eviction. My mother also went through a lot during this period. But above all, we thank God that it has ended well for us.”

FLASHBACK: From Delta to Lagos, How #EndSARS Protest Began | Foundation for investigative Journalism

Although Lagos quickly became the epicentre of the October 2020 #EndSARS protest, it started in Ughelli town, Delta State, when angry young people pursued police officers fleeing in a white SUV belonging to a man they allegedly shot and left to die by the road. “We dey follow them o!” One of the men chasing the officers screamed. The SUV ran left and right, outpacing other vehicles on the highway.

It was October 3, 17 days before Nigerian troops opened fire on hundreds of peaceful #EndSARS demonstrators at the Lekki Tollgate in Lagos. Exactly one year earlier, men of the Police Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) had stopped Idonreyin Obong, an Android engineer at Paystack, while returning from work around 11 pm. Seeing a Macbook and an iPhone in his car, they called him an internet fraudster and ordered him on their bus. If he did not pay N800,000, the officers alerted Obong, they would shoot him.

SPECIAL REPORT: The State of Security in Lagos 365 Days After Post-#EndSARS Carnage | Foundation for investigative Journalism

When Olumuyiwa Adejobi, on October 21, 2020, decried attacks on police formations across Lagos State by mischief makers and hoodlums, the then Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the state’s police command foresaw security threats and operational challenges for the force.

Adejobi, while lamenting the infiltration of the #EndSARS protests by these hoodlums who took advantage of the situation to burn and destroy over 10 police structures and buildings, said at the time that the command would need to commit more to patrols and rebuilding.

He said, “The implication of this is that money that has been set aside to do other projects and develop certain areas will have to be channelled into repairing these damaged stations".

Was There Really a Massacre at the Lekki Tollgate? | Foundation for Investigative Journalism

In my 17 years in and around journalism, this was the first time I asked myself if a story I personally investigated was really true. It had no precedent — that I invested time and energy n digging out a story, then I wrote it, got it published and, in the weeks and months that followed, asked myself if what I’d spent time investigating had indeed happened. This explains the equanimity with which I view those who still ask — out of genuine naivety or incredulity rather than blind party leaning — if people indeed died at the Lekki tollgate on October 20, 2020. If I, the journalist, sometimes felt that way, I can understand the plight of the doubting Thomases in the public.

In yet another case of investment scam in Nigeria, Bamise Ajetunmobi, the Managing Director of Imagine Global Solutions Ltd., and Elizabeth, his wife, have allegedly robbed unsuspecting investors of over N22 billion.

For three years, the institution founded in 2017 focused on raising capital through investors and lending money to small business owners with a 22 percent interest rate.

“All was well until the company stopped paying investors in August. This has to be the most organised fraud in the investment scams in Nigeria,” he said in tears.
