Sports / AFCON2023: Iwobi Needs To Be Replaced For The Final - Sunday Wale Adeniran by adefitim(m): 8:48am On Feb 10 |
Ola Aina is one of the best players not only for Nigeria but in the whole of this tournament but the moment he was moved to the left wing back due to Zaidu's absence, he struggled a bit in our last game. The day I feared the young lad was the day Nottingham Forest, his club in England faced Manchester United. He showed them pepper. If Zaidu is fit, he should start. At least, the number one job of a defender is to stop the opponent and in that aspect, you can't fault him; it is just that modern football also demands wing backs or full backs, depending on the team set up, to also be attack minded and players like Roberto Carlos are responsible for that. Lol The nucleus three of Semi Ajayi, Calvin Bassey and Troost-Ekong have proven to be a very solid shield for the goalkeeper and the goalkeeper himself whenever he is exposed which has been rare, he never disappoint. So the backline is settled. The trio of Osimhen, Lookman and Simon upfront have been giving every team we have played serious headache and Cote D'Ivoire will not be an exception. Nine out of eleven positions have been taken care of so far with two positions left: DM and CM, defensive midfielder and central or attacking midfielder which have been manned by Frank Onyeka and Alex Iwobi respectively. And while I rate the Brentford of England player 8/10 so far in his DM role for the Eagles, I rate the Fulham man, Iwobi 5.5/10. And I think that Peseiro and his team of coaches understand this and that is the reason Super Eagles creativity has been from the wings especially through Aina and Simon while Lookman has emerged as the talisman with Osimhen dragging opposing defenders with his runs there by creating space for Eluku. If therefore, there will be any change at all in the starting 11, I will like to see only Yusuf Alhassan take the place of Iwobi. He will make the midfield a bit more solid and his passes are more accurate. The Ivorians rely a lot on the midfield and we must not allow them take charge. Iwobi is the reason Osimhen overworks. I love him but let's leave sentiment. Over all, I don't see their luck carrying them beyond silver medals tomorrow. #SWA 57 Likes 3 Shares

Culture / Aroko: A Unique Way of Communication In Yoruba Culture by adefitim(m): 10:13pm On Feb 06 |
*In Yoruba culture, AROKO is a non-verbal semiotic system of communication.* For Example, Sending a broom to someone means - you no longer want to see them in your house. PÁKÒ (chewing stick) When you receive a chewing stick from an opposite sex, hmmm... It means "I LOVE YOU" ỌSÀN (Orange) When you receive an orange from someone, maybe sent through somebody else, it means I am pleased with you. It could also mean I love you. ÌYARUN/ÒÒYÀ (comb) A comb is used ordinarily for combing hair, I.e for separation of tangled hair. This phenomenon is transfered in coded Yoruba Àrokò. Sending a comb to someone far away means separation or ending Of friendship or love affair. ẸNÍ (mat) The sending of a piece of mat raffia especially of ore type is an indication that someone is sick in the household of the receiver and such a person is very lean. Ọ̀JÁ/GBÀJÁ Receing some part of cloth used to tie Baby means the pregnant woman you left home hassuccessfully put to bed IGBÁ ÒFÌFO (An empty Calabash) When a king receives an empty Calabash, parrot egg or skull. It means the people are no longer pleased with him, he should commit suicide. OWÓ ẸYỌ (cowrie shells) Owó ẹyọ is an object widely used to indicate many things in different àrokò, depending on the packaging and their number. A cowrie shell with a string attached to it is a sign of bad thing or that unfavorable thing happened. Two cowries shells tied together facing each other sent to a party or another group means we are in agreement with you or your view, there is harmony. But when the two shells are tied backing each other, it means disagreement, it means discord. symbolizes rejection and unfavorable message. Traditionally, the Yoruba abhor the giving of things in three (3). Three in Yoruba numerology is confusing. Six cowries tied together in 3 pairs, it is an expresion of emotion. Ẹ̀fà (6) is symbolic in Yoruba numerology, it Means attraction. Ẹ̀fà ló ní kíẹ fà mí mọ́ra (It is six that says draw me closer). So this Àrokò means the sender is longing to see the receiver. Or simply put, it means I MISS YOU. ÌRÙKẸ̀RẸ̀ (flywhisk/horsetail) Sending of Irukere - flywhisk and cowrie shells from one monarch to Another is a request for agreement or solidarity or farewell. ÌBỌN/Ẹ̀TÙ (Gun or gunpowder) Gun or gunpowder is a communication means between states or towns to express a conflict or war. It tells the receiving town or village to prepare for an imminent war with the sender. IYỌ̀ (salt) Salt or honey is sent in opposite meaning to gunpowder. It means peace, harmony and solidarity between the two towns or parties. Sending both sword and salt to another party in an unresolved issue means the receiver should choose between war and peace. Sports / It Will Be Difficult For Bafana Bafana To Tame Our Players- Sunday Wale Adeniran by adefitim(m): 1:44pm On Feb 04 |
Mali played possessive football with no purpose. Cote D'Ivoire were poor, extremely poor. Some have applauded them for their resilience despite being a man down but they didn't ask themselves how poorly they played when they had 11 players for 43'. Cote D'Ivoire did not enter Mali's box 18 until after 35' and there was no red card then. That team is poor, very poor. They are one of the worst 5 in this tournament but they have made it to the semis so 'koko won ti ye' so far. Mali deserve to lose and I am very happy they are out. They had no mission. South Africa is our next opponent and we shall beat them. We won't have to go for extra time before beating them. The 1996 AFCON they won on home ground was because Nigeria was banned from participating. The 1994 Super Eagles were way above all other African teams as at that time and I was sad because of the ban. This time around, these Eagles who most of us including myself didn't believe in but who have shown commitment and excellent team work will devour them. It was good that Lukman scored again. That will give their manager more reason to worry. Lukman will have to be marked, Osimhen too but how do you mark two attackers when the man of the match in our last game isn't any of the two? Simon must be checked too and that's where the Bafana Bafana manager will have a problem, a very big one at that. I'm not cajoling my readers or hallucinating, a coach who doesn't take this into consideration will lose before the game starts. It is also good that they stretched themselves for 130' in their match last night. The only man Nigeria shouldn't allow to shoot from distance is Mokeana. Williams will concede goals against Nigeria. Those Cape Verde penalty takers were naive, it's the first time the team played penalty shootout. Overall, we will find it easier against RSA than against Angola in our last game. That cup will come to Nigeria. Oluwa gba ope wa. #SWA Lalasticlala Mynd44 Seun Obinoscopy Nlfpmod |

Culture / The Story That Birth This Yorùbá Proverb. by adefitim(m): 11:35pm On Jan 27 |
The story that birth this Yorùbá proverb. “BÍ ONÍRÈSÉ BÁ KỌ̀ TÓ LÓHUN Ò FÍNGBÁ MỌ́, ÈYÍ TÓ FÍN SÍLẸ̀ KÒ LE È PARUN LÁÉLÁÉ." Before Ọ̀yọ́ became what we know today as Ọ̀yọ́ Atiba. It was known as Ọ̀YỌ́-ILÉ which historians referred to as the Old Ọ̀yọ́ Empire. That was the era when the Aláàfin had the autonomous power and was referred as “Aláṣẹ ìkejì Òrìṣà (the 2nd in command to the Òrìṣà). There was an absolute power the Aláàfin weilded all over Yorùbá Kingdom. The powers can only be checked by the Ọ̀yọ́mèsì, for the purpose of check and balance. Behind the Aláàfin of Ọ̀yọ́'s Palace in the ancient days were rows of stalls where wood and calabash carvers known as ONÍRÈSÉ engaged in their craft work. ONÍRÈSÉ as earlier said literally means CALABASH CARVERS but among these carvers, one was soecs specially nicknamed ONÍRÈSÉ. He was a divinely gifted Carver. During his birth, an Ifá priest who was consulted by his parents informed that the new born baby will be a great leader. And one day, he will find himself in a strange land across the ocean among the white people. But he must not engage in any work than the carving business. The Aláàfin, his chiefs, kings from neighbouring town and all traditional worshippers were all customers to this young man. His work was second to none in the entire Yorùbá land. One day, some Europeans who had come to Ọ̀yọ́ for tourism and to study the monarchical system of Of the Ọ̀yó̩ Empire stumbled into the stall of ONÍRÈSÉ and they were completely amazed by the excellent craft works done by him. After everything said and done, ONÍRÈSÉ found himself in an exhibition in Switzerland where his work became the best among others. ONÍRÈSÉ spent thirteen years touring different parts of Europe with the help of a European lady who had become his close associate. After tying the knot with this lady after an exhibition in a small town in Sweden, ONÍRÈSÉ decided to return home with his new bride for proper African traditional wedding. The entire Ọ̀yọ́ township and its environ were filled to the brim with people who had come to witness this very rare marriage. It was a showcase of pure African tradition and the Europeans that witnessed the occasion were fully entertained. After the wedding rites, they bestowed the title of Baale ÌRÈSÉ to ONÍRÈSÉ for the great honour he brought to Ọ̀yọ́ kingdom. With the new title and responsibility, the Alaafin believed that the white woman would not take the great man back to her strange land again. At this period back home, ONÍRÈSÉ Desisted from making calabash again rather he focused on other lucrative businesses and the governing of his little area. His old customers who were highly placed all over the Yorùbá Kingdom approached him to carve calabashes for them but he refused bluntly, encouraging them to patronize his kinsmen who are still into the business. This attitude annoyed some prominent chiefs in Ọ̀yọ́ and they reported him to the Aláàfin, saying the man had become so arrogant and disrespectful. They wanted the Aláàfin to give him a marching order to continue with the carving skill. The Aláàfin in his wisdom replied thus; Ẹ̀yin Ọ̀yọ́mèsì, BÍ ONÍRÈSÉ BÁ KỌ̀ TÓ LÓHUN Ò FÍNGBÁ MỌ́, ÈYÍ TÓ FÍN SÍLẸ̀ KÒ LE È PARUN LÁÉLÁÉ." This simply means; If ONÍRÈSÉ, the calabash carver insists that he will no longer carve calabash again, the ones he had made in the past can not extinct. Composed. Confident. Pragmatic. Precise. Determined. Decisive. Team Work. Ekong, as the heart of the defence and captain of the team, was in full control of that defense. He made an interception immediately after our first goal and that interception in our 18 yard box was as vital as the goal. He was flawless. Ola Aina and Bassey on Ekong's right and left were accurate in their tackles. They protected the goalkeeper and he had no shot to safe. Apart from Iwobi who specialized in giving wrong passes, the midfield was unruffle. Ademola, the son of Lookman poached the first goal after Osimhen had given his life to wrestle the ball from a Cameroonian defender who shouldn't have a problem with the ball but because the African best was close to him. From the blast of the Victor Osimhen had shown that he was out for business. Simon was making his runs on the flank and he didn't let the Cameroonian full back breathe. Eto'o, former Chelsea striker started with a bright laugh but ended with a cry. We love Eto'o Fils but we love Nigeria more. Congratulations, good people of this great nation. 21 Likes 2 Shares |
