The UN Resident Coordinator, Dr Daouda Toure, who made the appeal in Gombe at the screening of 2,000 Boko Haram victims from Adamawa, Borno and Yobe for a one-year skills acquisition programme, stated that many of the recovered communities had been contaminated with the rubbish left behind by the activities of Boko Haram and therefore, were unsafe to return to. Politics / Ebola: Tanzanian Nurse In Self- Quarantine After Serving In Liberia by Adegbayii(m): 2:58pm On Jul 10, 2015
A Tanzanian nurse who has just returned home after taking part in the post-Ebola Virus Disease recovery programme in the affected West African countries has placed herself under a 21-day quarantine. Ms. Loveness Isojick, 28, staff of Korogwe District Hospital in the eastern coastal region of Tanga, has been staying in a hotel room since her arrival from Monrovia, Liberia, on Wednesday. Isojick feared that joining her family and shaking hands with relatives and friends could put many Tanzanians at risk of infection with the EVD, in case she carried the virus, local media have reported. “One person can infect six others. I might be putting my family and the entire nation at risk if I ignore this precaution,” said Isojick. She had previously worked in Sierra Leone before going to Liberia for the post- Ebola programmes. “I know I haven’t handled patients directly this time but being quarantined for at least 21 days is a standard precaution for anyone who has been working in Ebola camps in West Africa. “The organisation that sponsored my programme in Liberia has asked me to monitor my temperature and report to them in case the Ministry of Health does not have the necessary measures in place,” she said. According to the nurse, her sponsors for the trip to the Ebola-affected countries promised to evacuate her immediately from Tanzania in case she developed Ebola-like symptoms. On arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, in northern Tanzania, Isojick filled in a special medical form, which was reportedly sent to the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare in Dar es Salaam for further action. “I guess the airport authorities must have informed the government immediately. I’ve also been asked to notify the district medical officer in Korogwe,” she said. But the ministry’s spokesperson, Nsachris Mwamwaja, said up until Thursday, the ministry had no information about Isojick and her self- quarantine. “We don’t have any report about the nurse,” he said. Five Tanzanian physicians who were sent on the same mission to Liberia under the auspices of the African Union returned home about two months ago. Before the EVD resurfaced last week in Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone, the UN Development Programme said the social and economic impact of Ebola would be felt long after the outbreak ended.

Politics / Cameroun Troops Repel Boko Haram Attack, Kill Three Militants by Adegbayii(m): 2:01pm On Jul 10, 2015
Cameroon’s army
has repulsed an
attack by Boko
Haram and killed
three of the Islamist
militants in heavy
fighting in the far
north region of the
country, a Cameroon
government
spokesman has said.
The attack
represented a change
of tactics by the
militants following a
series of battlefield
defeats this year.
The militants have
lost territory to a
regional force that
comprises Nigeria,
Niger, Chad and
Cameroon,
spokesman Issa
Tchiroma said on
Thursday.
“Early Tuesday
morning around
3:40am (local time),
an enemy column in
four-wheel drive
vehicles opened fire
on positions held by
our defence forces.
“There followed
violent combat until
dawn. Faced with the
repost of our
soldiers, the
aggressors beat a
retreat leaving behind
three dead, a
quantity of weapons
and a lot of blood,”
he said of the attack
in Bodo town.
He said no
government soldiers
were hurt.
“The militants are
trying to make their
voice heard and prove
that they continue to
exist,” he said.
Boko Haram rarely
comments directly on
military action and
there was no
independent
confirmation of the
battle.
Two military sources
close to the fighting
who declined to be
identified said 18
militants were killed
in the fighting.
The regional
operation has
reduced attacks in
recent months but
bombings in Nigeria
suggest Boko Haram
may be shifting its
focus further south
and west, towards
the capital, Abuja.
Boko Haram has been
trying to establish a
state adhering to
strict Sharia law
through an
insurgency that
began in 2009.
It controlled an area
larger than Belgium
at the end of 2014
before the regional
offensive began.

Politics / We’ll Shun Anti- Industrial Development Policies – Buhari by Adegbayii(m): 1:31pm On Jul 10, 2015
President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday said his administration would shun all anti- development policies in order to create a more conducive atmosphere for entrepreneurs, while also lamenting that Nigeria was at the lowest ebb as far as industrial development was concerned. According to a statement by the President’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, Buhari spoke at a meeting he had with the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment, Abdulkadir Musa, and senior officials of agencies under the ministry. Buhari was quoted as saying that employment generation was one of his key campaign promises and that he would keep to the promise. The President was quoted as saying, “With high interest rates and entrepreneurs needing trillions of naira to buy machinery, we are virtually back at ground zero as far as industrial development is concerned. “So, we will shun all anti-development policies and make the climate more suitable for entrepreneurs. We will create the environment for them to thrive. Generating employment was one of our key campaign promises and we will keep that promise. “We will no longer allow our markets to be flooded with things that we can produce ourselves. We must believe in our system. Whenever you need my intervention, please come to me.” He said his administration would implement essential reforms to protect indigenous manufacturers from unfair competition from abroad. He said with its focus on job creation, his government was ready to do whatever it considered necessary to boost domestic manufacturing and industrialisation. The President said that his administration would fully support the effective implementation of the plan evolved by the ministry to boost local manufacturing through legal, regulatory and structural reforms; lower interest rates, special intervention funds, protection of local manufacturers and significant improvements in national infrastructure. Musa and his team reportedly told the President that the objective of the ministry’s Industrial Revolution Plan was to create more jobs, diversify exports and broaden the country’s tax base. They said that the plan’s critical success factors included dialogue and consultation with industry stakeholders, essential reforms and greater collaboration among relevant agencies. .
