EducationASUU Branches Meet Today, Exco On Wednesday by ADEGOKESIKIRU(op): 12:59am On Nov 11, 2013
ALL branches of Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, will hold their congresses today to brief members on President Goodluck Jonathan’s offer.
Nigeria public universities have been closed down over four months as a result of the Federal Government’s inability to implement the agreement it entered into in 2010 with lecturers.
There have been a lot of calls from well-meaning Nigerians to the Federal Government and ASUU to come to a compromise so that students resume academic activities
Both warring factions had maintained hard stand on the issue as ASUU argued that poor funding was responsible for the dwindling fortunes of education and its attendant poor quality of graduates, while the Federal Government said the university lecturers downed tools over enhanced earned allowance.
However, the long closure of universities led the leadership of the Senate and President Jonathan to hold separate meetings with the union and relevant stakeholders last Monday, where new offers were made to the teachers with a plea for them to re-open universities.
A branch Chairman of ASUU, who told Vanguard of today’s congresses in all the universities, said the meeting was for the chairmen to brief members on the outcome of their meeting with President Jonathan.
He further said that the outcome of today’s meeting of the various branches would be communicated to the national leadership of the union, which will in turn convene an emergency NEC meeting between Wednesday and Thursday this week to consider the positions of various branches .
The Chairman, who did not want his name to be mentioned, said: “Branches throughout the country will be holding their congresses on Monday (today) to brief our members on the outcome of the meeting with the President.
“It is at the meeting that the various branches will take position and communicate same to the national leadership Monday evening, then an emergency NEC meeting would be convened between Wednesday and Thursday.
“We have not been told of the venue, but we were told to prepare because it would take two days by road from my branch.”
He said calling for a strike or calling it off was not a decision taken by the ASUU President (Dr. Nasir Fagge) or the national executive alone.

Oni V Fayemi: Supreme court strikes out case
for lack of jurisdiction.

Tension has enveloped Ado-Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital, as the Supreme Court in Abuja will today deliver judgement on the appeal filed by Chief Olusegun Oni.

Oni of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, is challenging his removal as governor by an Appeal Court verdict on October 15, 2010.

He is at the Supreme Court over the verdict that declared Dr. Kayode Fayemi of the Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, as the duly elected governor in the 2007 governorship election in the state.

Although the Appeal Court was the court of last resort in election matters that time, Oni had approached the Appeal Court to reverse itself on the matter, citing the establishment of conviviality between ACN chieftains and the suspended Appeal Court President, Justice Isa Salami, who headed the appeal panel that removed his government.

In the appeal, he had sought to “establish that where an issue of bias or likelihood of bias is raised, it bothers on the appellant’s constitutional right to fair hearing which if found to have been denied renders the proceeding and the judgement based thereon a nullity no matter how well conducted or written”.

But following failure of the appeal at the appellate court in February last year, Oni headed for the Supreme Court, seeking the intervention of the highest court in the land “to reiterate and re-establish the trite point of law which has been well settled in our jurisprudence that the same court or a court of coordinate jurisdiction and even a superior court can validly set aside or nullify a judgement or proceeding which is a nullity by reason of denial of fair hearing”.

Among others, in the suit, Oni is seeking an order directing a fresh panel of the Court of Appeal to hear and determine the aforesaid appeal; and another order directing the Speaker of the Ekiti State House of Assembly to take over the governance of Ekiti State pending the hearing and determination of the appeal.

Ahead of today’s judgement, the PDP and ACN had engaged in verbal war, accusations and counter accusations, thus heating up the polity. Anxiety heightened in the state yesterday over the judgement as supporters of both parties were confident of victory in the matter.
