Top Yoruba monarch, the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi, has passed on, Naijatopmost can report.

Alaafin Adeyemi, the third from the Alowodu Ruling House, died in the late hours of Friday at the Afe Babalola University Teaching Hospital, Ado Ekiti, the capital of Ekiti State in South-West Nigeria.

The remains of the top Yoruba traditional ruler were brought to Oyo town, 62 kilometres from Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, in the early hours of Saturday and traditional rites began, palace sources told this newspaper.

He was 83 years old and the longest reigning Alaafin ever, having ruled for 52 years.

The Governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, is expected to make an official announcement upon receiving the report of the monarch’s passing from the Bashorun of Oyo, Yusuf Akinade, the head of the ‘Oyo Mesi’, who will now lead Oyo town before a new Alaafin is installed.

A middle-aged man, Sakiru Famuyiwa, has been accused of stealing two children during the Good Friday service at the Celestial Church of Christ Ijeja area of Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital.

DAILY POST reports that the suspect was nabbed on Friday following a distress call received by policemen at the Ibara police division.

Ogun police spokesman, Abimbola Oyeyemi, explained that while the Good Friday service was going on, the suspect and one other now at large, reportedly “sneaked into the children’s department and “stole” two children” aged two and three.

According to Oyeyemi, the men were sighted by a vigilant member of the church on their way out with the children.

The member, who saw them was said to have raised the alarm, and as a result, the congregants pursued them and apprehended one of them.

Upon the distress call, DAILY POST learnt that the DPO of Ibara division, CSP Nasirudeen Oyedele, quickly mobilised his men and moved to the scene where the suspect was rescued from the angry mob, who Oyeyemi said were about to lynch him.

Nigeria To Effect Higher Taxes On Cigarettes, Shisha And Others Smoking Substances Starting From June 1

The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced that the new tax regime for tobacco will be implemented from June 1, 2022.

Director of Technical Services, Federal Ministry of Finance, Fatima Hayatu said this at a meeting with the Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC).

The Programme Manager on Democratic Governance, Okeke Anya led the organisation’s Tobacco Taxation Working Group.

Hayatu called the tobacco industry a powerful one, assuring that the ministry is committed to checkmating illicit flow of the product into the market.

She hinted that plans were underway to engage relevant stakeholders to implement a robust track and trace system.

The government is set to constitute a tobacco tax working group to study what other ECOWAS countries are doing.

The director said the taxation on a stick of cigarette was N2.90kobo but has now increased to N4.20kobo.

This followed ECOWAS recommendation of 0.02cents per stick of cigarette which, at the current exchange rate, would give N8.40kobo.

Polytechnic lecturers have vowed to continue their ongoing strike despite the offer of N15bn by the Federal Government. The leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) said the Federal Government promised to release N15bn to the union for infrastructural revitalisation.

Addressing newsmen in Abuja, the National President of ASUP, Comrade Anderson Ezeibe, said the strike will be sustained “until the unresolved details in the offer are sorted out in the meetings expected in the coming days.” The union had commenced an indefinite strike on April 6, demanding implementation of a new salary scheme for polytechnic lecturers, revitalisation of the dilapidated state of polytechnics, implementation of new national minimum wage, amongst others.

ASUP had explained its decision to down tool was to draw the attention of the government to the nine basic needs of the union. It added there was need to release the 10- month arrears of the new minimum wage owed its members in Federal Polytechnics and the implementation of same in the several States yet to implement the new minimum wage. The ASUP President said: “Our union received offers from the government during the meetings for the release of an infrastructural revitalisation fund of ₦15billion for the sector and this is in lieu of the NEEDS Assessment report of 2014.

Some unknown gunmen have reportedly attacked the Ibadan residence of Yoruba activist, Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Igboho.

According to the BBC Yoruba service, the attack occurred in the early hours of Monday morning, on April 26. The publication stated that gunfire was heard in front of Igboho’s house located in the Soka area of Ibadan.

A spokesperson to the activist, Dapo Salami, told the BBC that the gunmen stormed the residence at 1am.

He stated that the attackers were resisted by Igboho’s supporters on the premises.
