You can quote me anywer....d original plan of abj which is what is used now was designed by a Geography professor from University of Ibadan now in bkessed memeory...lets just end dz arguement...it all depends on what one wants....that determines wich is better. Cos i heard someone saying EIA done by URP....EIA is a multidisciplinary assessment done by almost everyone.

For me a geographer(B.Sc)..M.Sc Env control nd mgt, specialise in remote sensing and GIS, also a programmer(python)....and am enjoying myself. There are also URP guys enjoying demsefs too nd der are also geographers yet to enjoy so also URP..so also d engineers, lawyers,.....

I will just say let d fellow choose whatever course she wants, let d person love it, do adequate research on d selling pt of d course, be open minded and most importantly connect to d greatest Geographer and URPlanner of all which is GOD. And wit little knowledge nd skill from either...u will earn a good income and be fulfilled. Drop pen.

Forget about climate change which people like Donald Trump have called a scam, for instance Europe and America still runs coal fired power plants but will come to Africa and tell us to do wind turbine and solar because of climate change which is a just a way for them to sell expensive equipment to us which cannot be used for full industrialization and geographers promote that mantra verbatim.

But Town Planners look at what works in Europe and America holistically and then juxtapose it with our local environment by doing a localized Environmental Impact Assessment and advise based on that locality findings, planners dont genaralize issues and make blanket recommendations, while a Geographer will simply say according to international journals there is climate change in the world so we have to avoid burning coal.
Planning is quite stressful for students as it combines other fields such as building, quantity surveying, land surveying, civil engineering, architecture in the first and second years compared to Geography.

I am a certified Town Planner, every city requires them for effective development and the field is broad in that you could even be an architectural draughtsman as a student within our locality, environmental impact assessment expert, good knowledge of Geography and remote sensing which can also be done as masters programme.
Engineers and Architects, built industry practitioners, politicians etc have to work with Master Plans developed by Planners for estate layouts, parks and recreation, markets and business areas developments, construction sites, transportation and movement within cities etc
States like Lagos know the importance of planning and Abuja is one city where planners have exhibited their expertise through monitoring and evaluation of the Abuja master plan which has been a battle between them and competing factors. It is a broad field which requires creative minds.

I advice s/he takes geo. the career opportunities in geography are enormous. currently am doing masters in geo n natural resources management. urp is stereotypical. but geo is broader. by the time s/he gets to final year s/he would be at a loss as per what to major summarily geo is like the narrow road with few people. career wise it's relevant in almost all aspects of human endeavor

both course are good...both the one with higher chance in Nigeria is Urp...I did not choose urp because am an undergraduate of Urp...bt I will take time to analyse where urban planner can work
transport sector :because we take courses on transportation
land:we design,order the use of land for effective,economy and beauty purpose

NONE!!! I studied Geography and Meteorology. I have friends who studied URP (same Environmental Science Faculty). None of us works in our field of study even with my best graduating student blah blah blah. There is no job in these fields here in Nigeria unless you want to be a Sec Sch teacher. Let him/her choose any of Architecture, Remote sensing, Surveying, GPS or GIS if he/she is hell bent on working in the environmental field!!! This is what I will advice my own child.

GIS, hydrology folks. Or he could do a masters in Geology, env. science or other geo-sciences. Geography is broad, he could switch to the economics aspect, physical, computer/technical, Surveying (BIG MONEY), meteorology, population, human (INEC), SATELLITE Navigation, United nations related researches and grants etc. Even URP is in geography. So many opportunities as long as he's ready to add skills persoanlly because schools won't teach you more than 5% these days. I hope i've made some common sense

Your choice of the one to choose between the two depends on your future carrier ambition. for the guy giving his reason on why you should choose URP to be because secondary schools are retrenching geography teacher is way out of the line. going by that his argument, people should stop studying chemical engineering, banking and finance, accounting because oil, banking sectors have been retrenching workers since last year. If you have any ambition of joining force, going into GIS, cartography, Meteorology, Environmental resource management, I strongly advice you to go for Geography. but if your ambition is to become a secondary school teacher, then go for URP as the earlier poster suggested because they are not retrenching them unlike the geography teachers. I studied Geography/Meteorology in Federal university of technology, minna. presently I'm running a master programme in environmental resource management in the same school. rounding off the programme almost. Google environmental resource management and URP and choose for yourself. as I said earlier, your choice should be determined by your future career ambition. No course is superior to the other as no course can take the place of the other.

This is just it. All of you saying Geography is a waste of time are just plain ignorant. Please know that URP is, but a course within Geography. Geography is, as a lecturer of mine used to say is life. It is so wide and all encompassing.

Each and every course has its ups and downs. What matters most is a carrier plan. So OP, please advise your relative to go for Geography and finds what makes him/her excited in Geography after graduation and specialize in that particular field, be it GIS, Remote sensing, flying, URP..... THE LIST IS JUST ENDLESS

Nd dz is a complete disaster for Nigeria. Obviously all d post av seen so far was based out of ignorance. Now Geog and URP are two different things. Geog is wider dan urp. What is d future of d Nigeria environment and its resources if geog is scrapped out of d system. Most courses on environment if not all, climate change amg odas are built on the knowledge of geog or on d course geog. Now if she chooses geog(grads wit a good grade) and plans her career well..she has job opportunities from the United Nations, Oil companies, Teaching hospitals(medical geog), Research institutes wich includes universities, places lyk IITA,FRIN,NESREA, NOSDRA(if she does msc in GIS)..there r a lot wich i cant just list. And even tho i av seen geographers in d aviation industry, banks,airpots, Nimet, and dz country economy is flexible to any discipline.....all she needs its a good grade at least a 2:1. And she will have more opportunities dan URP. IN conclusion if neither course is her dream...she should go for Geography. Its far better dan URP if both are not r dream profession.

if you check online, you would realise most universities in Nigeria and abroad don't offer geography anymore. if he wants to work in environment, let him study exactly that thus,urp,civil engineering, landscape architecture, gis or any other aspect he is interested, geography is a Jack of all, master of none which is why it's not a professional course.urp is a far better option.

Its almost the same. I studied GRP too. Its the pure science and social science combination. Because u will do science courses with social science courses. URP is more social science. But when its all saud n done. The courses he will take are the same from 200 level up. If hes a science student let him try Geology staright if not he shld do the URP. Probl3m with these GRP/URP is u will be explainig ur course of study to most pple.talking ftom experience. Its the Regional Planning part that will save u stress n they be like oh ok.

Geography can easily open up doors of international opportunities for you because it is general and not specific ,unlike Urban and regional planning . If you move abroad and you say u read urban and regional planning , they would first of all look at where you are coming from- Africa -Nigeria , what can you really categorically point to as a good monument of urban and regional planning in Nigeria ? With Geography you can still conveniently branch out into Urban and regional planning either in the future or at a Master degree level. Don't just get carried away with the name 'Urban and regional Planning'

Human Geography

Human Geography which is the second sub-discipline is of no less importance because essentially studies the people, cultures and communities existing in the world with a view of understanding its effects on the environment and vice versa. This means that the sub-discipline tries to understand the relationship that occurs within and across space – space here referring to specific locations – and place.

The scope of Human Geography is somewhat broader that physical geography and thus the sub-fields are more numerous than its counterpart. These subfields are namely:

Cultural Geography (trying to understand and describe the occurrence of various cultural groups with reference to space.
Economic Geography (studying the relationship between economic systems and the biophysical environment).
Historical Geography (understanding world history in terms of space and time).
Population Geography (studying cultural composition, growth, migration patterns as related to nature of places).
Political Geography (studying political and governmental features of regions)
Settlement Geography (defining what could be termed rural and urban areas and why?)
Health (Medical) Geography (health and disease study across space and place).
Essentially, Geography is considered the field of the three ‘Ws’, i.e. “Why is What Where”? Meaning the field studies ‘phenomenon’ both existing and anticipated.

Physical Geography

The first sub-discipline to be discussed is Physical Geography. Why?

This is because Physical Geography studies the all processes and pattern that can be consider natural on the Earth’s surface and since it is has been established in the science that the earth came into existence before humans, the physical environment is always studied first.

There are constant interactions between people and the environment and also between elements of the environment itself and this is the focus of Physical geography. Its importance is growing daily with the different types of environment issues that seems to the popping up day by day in the world we live in today e.g. water shortages, global warming, deforestation, tsunamis, erosion, to name a few.

The sub-discipline has four (4) view points namely the Atmosphere (air), Lithosphere (ground), Hydrosphere (water) and Biosphere (the meeting point of the other three spheres also referred to as the ‘Life’ sphere).

Sub-fields in Physical Geography are numerous but they can be broadly categorized into 5 which are

Geomorphology (earth’s form and structure)
Hydrology (study of all forms of water underground, over-ground and in the cloud)
Climatology (study of long term weather called climate and its effects on life)
Biogeography ( study of plant and animal life and processes)
Pedology ( the study of soils)

The analytical and research skills gained from your geography degree are attractive to a range of employers
