PoliticsNigeria Moving In Right Direction — Sunday Dare by adenigga(op): 2:26pm On May 10
The Presidency has said that Nigeria is moving in the right direction, noting that President Bola Tinubu’s reforms are working.

Special Adviser to the President on Media and Public Communication, Sunday Dare, stated this at the Northern Stakeholders Town Hall engagement in Kaduna State on Saturday.

Dare described the reforms as difficult but necessary measures aimed at preventing economic collapse and repositioning the country for sustainable growth.

The presidential aide stressed that the Tinubu’s policies, including fuel subsidy removal and foreign exchange reforms, were critical steps toward restoring fiscal stability and improving investor confidence.

Dare also said the reforms were already yielding positive outcomes despite the initial hardships experienced by Nigerians.

“Tinubu’s reforms are working and Nigeria is moving in right direction,” he said.

Participants at the engagement expressed the need for continuity in government policies to ensure long-term economic stability and sustained development, with several stakeholders backing President Tinubu’s re-election for policy consistency.

PoliticsNigerian Government Issues Fresh Fuel Import Licenses To Petrol Marketers by adenigga(op): 5:18am On May 10
In a new policy shift, the Nigerian government, through the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority, resumed issuance of petrol import licenses to petroleum marketers.

The licenses were issued to six petroleum marketers expected to import around 720,000 metric tons of Premium Motor Spirit (petrol).

DAILY POST reports that the move is a policy shift from a focus on local refineries, in this case the Dangote Refinery.

Beneficiaries are major oil marketers such as NIPCO, AA Rano, Matrix, Shafa, Pinnacle, and Bono.

NIPCO is expected to import 120,000 metric tons; AA Rano, 150,000 MT; Matrix, 150,000 MT; Shafa, 120,000 MT; Pinnacle, 120,000 MT; and Bono, 60,000 MT, totaling 720,000 MT of petrol imports.

Although the NMDPRA did not officially stated the reason for the fresh licenses, Dangote Refinery has reiterated its capacity to meet local fuel consumption demand. In fact NMDPRA’s recent industrial data showed that the 650,000-barrel-per-day refinery supplied 90 percent of the country’s daily consumption.

Meanwhile, NMDPRA’s recent decision toward petrol imports has stirred concerns among stakeholders.

The development comes barely a week after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu appointed Rabiu Abdullahi Umar as Chief Executive Officer of NMDPRA.

President Tinubu had sacked Saidu Mohammed as CEO of NMDPRA while he was on official duty in Germany.

PoliticsSpeaker Abbas Declares Fifth-Term Bid by adenigga(op): 4:46am On May 10
Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt.Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, on Saturday launched his fifth-term bid at a grand ceremony in Zaria, Kaduna State.

Declaring his intention to contest for the seat of House of Representatives at the Mallawa Eid Ground, Zaria, Abbas used the occasion to list the many democratic dividends his representation has attracted to the people of Zaria Federal Constituency.

Daily Trust reports that thousands of supporters and loyalists of the Speaker embarked on a solidarity walk from the Emir’s Palace, Zaria, through the Babban Dodo, Lemu, Kofar Doka, Tudun Wada axis before arriving at the Mallawa Eid Ground for the declaration.

“These are not theories. These are visible projects. These are measurable results, the Speaker stated, adding that the constituency projects have empowered the constituents and changed lives.

Today, I formally declare my intention to seek another mandate to represent the good people of Zaria Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives.

“This declaration is not based on promises alone. It is based on work. It is based on results. It is based on a record that our people can see and verify.

“When you first entrusted me with this responsibility, I made a commitment that representation would not be distant from the people.

“I said leadership must produce visible outcomes. I said public office must improve lives. And together, we have worked to fulfill that promise,” he said.

The Speaker stated that he remained “one of the most active lawmakers in the country,” as he sponsored 74 bills, out of which 21 were signed into law. These were not efforts designed for publicity. They were aimed at solving problems and strengthening governance,” he said.

He stated that his representation brought development closer to the people.

Abbas said, “We supported farmers with tractors, fertilisers, and agricultural equipment because we understand the importance of agriculture to our economy and to the survival of our families.

“We supported transport operators, party structures, community leaders, youth groups, and small business owners with tricycles and motorcycles to improve livelihoods, strengthen mobility, and create opportunities.

“We expanded these interventions on a larger scale by distributing 117 vehicles, 200 tricycles, and 1,000 motorcycles across communities, support groups, religious leaders, polling unit structures, and grassroots stakeholders.

“When our people needed direct economic support, we acted.”

He recalled that 2,400 beneficiaries received direct financial support to strengthen their businesses and support their families, while 800 trained beneficiaries received N250,000 each, with 1,600 small business owners receiving N100,000 each.

“That is practical representation. That is the kind of leadership our people deserve,” Abbas stated.

Daily Trust reports that Abbas was first elected into the House of Representatives in 2011.

CrimeCustoms Intercepts 425.5kg Tramadol, Cannabis In Kwara by adenigga(op): 7:07am On May 09
The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Kwara Area Command, has intercepted 425.5 kilograms of tramadol and cannabis including, foreign rice and other smuggled items worth over N204 million.

The seizures, recorded between March and May 2026, came as the command also announced a first quarter revenue generation of N3.89 billion.

This is despite the continued closure of Nigeria’s land border with the Republic of Benin.

Acting Area Controller of the command, Deputy Comptroller Najeem Ogundeyi, disclosed this during the command’s third press briefing of the year in Ilorin.

Ogundeyi said the operations targeted notorious smuggling flashpoints including Bukuro, Gurumi, Sikira, Okuta, Boriya, Tewu, Bero, Sango, Okeoyi, Alapa, Malete, Bani, Offa, Idofian, Eiyenkorin and the Lagos-Ilorin Expressway.

According to him, the areas have remained under surveillance due to persistent attempts by smugglers to move prohibited and uncustomed goods into and out of the country.

He disclosed that the command seized 49.5 kilograms of cannabis and 376 kilograms of tramadol during separate operations carried out by operatives.

Other intercepted items included 155 bags of foreign parboiled rice valued at N52.4 million, 3,697 packages of macaroni pasta worth N110.9 million and 418 jerrycans of vegetable oil with a Duty Paid Value (DPV) of N27.1 million.

The command also confiscated 237 jerrycans of Premium Motor Spirit totaling 5,925 litres, 70 used tyres, 18 bales of second-hand clothing and 19 jerrycans of corrosive oxidizer chemicals.

“In summary, between the month of March 2026 to date, the command operatives have successfully recorded nine different seizures with a total Duty Paid Value of N204,763,439,” Ogundeyi said.

He said the seizures underscored the commitment of the service to suppressing illegal trade and protecting national revenue.

The acting controller added that the command generated N3,895,333,182.94 in the first quarter of 2026, attributing the performance to excise revenue and strengthened enforcement activities.

He appealed to residents of border communities to support the service with timely and credible information capable of aiding anti-smuggling operations.

He assured that the command would remain resolute in pursuing individuals involved in illegal trade while safeguarding the nation’s economic interests.

Foreign AffairsNigerian Doctor To Pay $1m Fine For Cutting Down Trees by adenigga(op): 4:57am On May 09
Oakland’s City Council has voted that a Nigerian medical doctor, Matthew Bernard, and his wife will pay a fine of nearly $1m for felling 38 legally protected trees on and around their Claremont Avenue property in the United States.

A California-based media platform, KQED, reported that more than 20 residents at a public hearing on Tuesday demanded enforcement of Oakland’s tree protection laws.

They argued that the leafy canopies of the trees in the area were important for wildfire prevention, public health and environmental equity.

Diaspora Tales reported last month that Bernard and his partner, Lynn Warner, said they removed trees from their property on an arborist’s advice.

At the hearing on Tuesday, the Nigerian medical expert told the council that the trees removed from his property nearly four years ago were “dead, dying, leaning,” or in “hazardous condition.”

The city, however, disagreed and fined Bernard and Warner $915,135.40 and placed a claim on their property that would prevent them from developing or selling the land until the fine was paid.

Defending the fine, a community tree specialist, Erys Gagnez, said, “Trees of that size are not commercially available for replacement. Even with replanting, it will take decades, even centuries, to restore the ecological and protective functions that were lost. The scale of the fine reflects this reality.”

PoliticsNearly 1,000 Insurgents, Families Surrender In North-east – Nigerian Army by adenigga(op): 5:42am On May 07
At least 958 insurgents and their family members have surrendered to Nigerian troops across the North-East in 2026.

This was disclosed by the Theatre Commander of Operation Hadin Kai, Maj. Gen. Abdulsalam Abubakar.

He revealed this on Wednesday while speaking to journalists in Maiduguri, saying the figure adds to a growing trend of mass surrenders recorded in recent years.

Abubakar said that since 2021, a total of 152,864 insurgents and their families have laid down their arms.

He broke down the figure, explaining that 20,815 are active male fighters, 37,095 are women, and 64,114 are children.

“The steady increase in surrender is a direct result of sustained military pressure, degradation of terrorist capabilities, and effective non-kinetic measures,” he said.

He explained that many of those who surrendered cited intense military operations, the breakdown of their command structures, and worsening living conditions as key reasons for giving up.

According to him, all those who surrender undergo thorough screening and interrogation, which helps the military gather useful intelligence for ongoing operations.

“Information obtained from the debriefing of these individuals has significantly enhanced our operational planning and contributed to recent successes in the theatre,” he said.

The commander also praised the Borno State Government’s deradicalisation and reintegration programme, known as the Borno Model, for encouraging more fighters to surrender.

He said the initiative, implemented with support from local and international partners, offers a clear pathway for former insurgents to abandon violence and reintegrate into society.

Abubakar added that working closely with community leaders and humanitarian groups has helped build trust among those willing to surrender.

He stressed that combining military action with non-military strategies remains key to weakening groups such as Boko Haram.

Despite the progress, he warned that the fight is not yet over and called for continued efforts to prevent former fighters from returning to violence.

Foreign AffairsNigerian Students Move To Picket South African Businesses Over Xenophobia by adenigga(op): 8:41pm On May 06
The leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Southwest Zone D, has expressed deep outrage over the renewed wave of xenophobic attacks in South Africa, which has once again claimed the lives of innocent Nigerians.

A statement issued to newsmen by Comrade Adeyemo Josiah Kayode, aka (BILLIONCODES), Coordinator, NANS Southwest (Zone D), said the recent killing of two Nigerians is not just an isolated tragedy but a painful reminder of a recurring pattern of hostility and violence against our people.

“We categorically state that the continued targeting of Nigerians under any guise is unacceptable and must come to an immediate end,” he said.

According to the statement, NANS Southwest is mobilizing to take decisive and lawful action by organizing peaceful picketing and mass advocacy against South African business interests operating in Nigeria.

“This will include major corporations such as MTN Group and MultiChoice Group. It is morally indefensible for businesses to thrive in an environment where the lives of Nigerians are protected, while Nigerians are subjected to fear and violence elsewhere.

“This contradiction will no longer be tolerated,” the statement said.

It, therefore, called on the South African government and relevant authorities to urgently demonstrate a genuine commitment to protecting foreign nationals, particularly Nigerians, and to ensure that justice is served in all reported cases of violence.

The statement pointed out that silence, delayed responses, or symbolic gestures will not suffice, stressing that the safety, dignity, and rights of Nigerians must be guaranteed, not negotiated.

NANS Southwest also assured that it will remain open to dialogue and constructive engagement with South African business representatives, diplomatic channels, and international stakeholders toward resolving this crisis.

It, however, made it clear that Nigerian students will not stand idly by while the lives of their compatriots are endangered.

CrimeTwo Nigerians Arrested In Uganda For Drug Trafficking, Fraud by adenigga(op): 1:36pm On May 06
Two Nigerians have been arrested in Uganda over alleged involvement in an international drug trafficking and document fraud network dismantled by security agencies in Kampala, the nation’s capital.

The arrests followed an intelligence-led operation coordinated by Uganda’s Ministry of Internal Affairs through the National Citizenship and Immigration Control, in collaboration with other security agencies.

This was contained in a statement issued on Wednesday by the ministry’s spokesperson, Mundeyi Simon Peter, and posted on its X handle.

The ministry said the operation uncovered a “sophisticated drug trafficking network operating internationally based in Kampala,” involving a Ugandan national and several foreign associates.

At the centre of the investigation is a Ugandan businessman, Mr Mugisha Keith King, who authorities said is linked to shell companies and multiple alleged criminal activities, including drug trafficking and identity fraud.

“In 2010, Mr Mugisha was arrested at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) in Nairobi with cocaine shipped from Brazil. He served a 12-year prison sentence in Kenya and remains an internationally wanted criminal.

“Mr Mugisha holds different passports alongside his Ugandan passport, including those from Seychelles, the Kingdom of Eswatini, Belgium, the United Kingdom and Brazil, as well as national IDs of Kenya and Nigeria. He also has a fake work ID masquerading as an employee of the President’s Office,” the statement read.

Authorities further accused him of impersonating government and military officials and displaying a signpost at his residence reading “Ambassador’s Residence.”

The statement also alleged that Mugisha coordinated illegal activities with Nigerian nationals, including Chekwubechukwu, described as his spouse.

“Mr Mugisha is alleged to be coordinating these illegal activities with a group of Nigerian nationals. Of particular concern is the discovery that his spouse, a Nigerian national, Ms Ikemefuna Winner Chekwubechukwu, fraudulently acquired a Ugandan National ID under the name Mugisha Winner Chekwubechukwu with the help of Mugisha.

“She is currently on the run in Brazil.

“The Ministry also has in custody the following Nigerian associates linked to this racket: 1. Ikemefuna Testimony Udo; 2. Ikemefuna Annointing,” the statement added.

The ministry said further arrests are ongoing in collaboration with international security partners.

Security agencies also reportedly recovered weapons and other items during searches of the suspect’s residence and business premises, including a gun, a pistol, live ammunition, multiple passports, identity cards, military attire, communication gadgets, and allegedly forged official documents.

“The Ministry emphasizes that Uganda maintains a zero-tolerance policy towards drug trafficking and the misuse of military hardware,” the statement said.

It urged members of the public to report suspected drug activity and impersonation of security personnel to relevant authorities, adding that investigations and immigration status reviews of all foreign suspects were ongoing.

The ministry added that it would continue working with international partners to apprehend other suspects still at large.

PoliticsNigeria Won’t Restore Fuel Subsidy – Oyedele by adenigga(op): 11:56am On May 06
Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele, has reiterated that the Presidency will not reintroduce fuel subsidy, despite widespread concerns over the rising cost of living following its removal.

He made this known on Tuesday in Paris, France, during a meeting between President Bola Tinubu and global investors.

Oyedele maintained that subsidies previously caused economic “distortions,” adding that petrol pricing would not be regulated, as the government has confidence in market forces to determine prices.

After the subsidy was scrapped in May 2023, Nigeria experienced a sharp spike in inflation, reaching its highest level in 19 years.

Headline inflation increased from 22.41% in May 2023 to 34.19% by June 2024, driven largely by rising fuel, food, and transportation costs, which worsened living conditions nationwide

Inflation continued to climb steadily after the June 2023 policy shift, with food inflation exceeding 39% by October 2024.

The policy change, alongside currency devaluation, pushed transportation costs up by nearly 300% and deepened poverty levels.

“We will not bring back fuel subsidy because it creates distortions for the economy, and we won’t introduce price control because we believe in the market… the situation in Iran presents new opportunities for us as the world looks to diversify sources of energy and invest in new markets”, the Minister said.

Earlier, President Tinubu told the investors that Nigeria has achieved improved foreign exchange stability following the removal of the “burden” of fuel subsidy, according to a statement by his Special Assistant on Social Media, Dada Olusegun.

“Subsidy that was a burden to the entire country, was removed and ever since we have achieved FX stability”, Tinubu told the investors.

In a follow-up statement, his Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, noted that the administration’s reform agenda focuses on eliminating economic distortions and strengthening macroeconomic stability to support long-term inclusive growth.

He stated the government’s commitment to transparency and fiscal discipline, explaining that these guided the swift rollout of key reforms.

At the meeting, Tinubu reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to sustaining reform efforts.

Oyedele also pointed to strong economic performance, stating that Nigeria recorded 11.2% GDP growth in dollar terms in 2025, reinforcing its goal of building a $1 trillion economy by 2030.

He added that the government’s immediate focus is to ensure that reform policies translate into tangible benefits for citizens, while also promising the regular publication of quarterly financial reports.

The Director-General of the Debt Management Office, Patience Oniha, assured investors of prudent debt management and a commitment to sustainable borrowing practices.

The investor group included representatives from Citibank, France’s Amundi led by Valerie Baudson, BlueCrest, Ninety One from the UK and South Africa, Kirkoswald Capital, Principal Finisterre, as well as US firms Prudential Global Investment Management (PGIM) and Mesarete Capital.

President Tinubu, who departed Nigeria on Sunday for a three-nation trip, reiterated that his administration’s economic reforms are designed to stabilise key indicators and create a foundation for sustained growth.

He added that efforts are ongoing to deepen reforms, improve transparency in the oil sector, and implement a comprehensive security strategy, including decentralising the police and tackling terrorist financing.

“The focus remains on policy stability and diligent execution to ensure these strategic shifts translate into concrete benefits for all Nigerians”, President Tinubu said.

Some investors at the meeting praised the government’s reform agenda and expressed confidence in Nigeria’s economic outlook.

In response to a question about his plans beyond 2027, Tinubu pledged to reinforce fiscal discipline, improve transparency, and maintain consistent policies.

PoliticsBoko Haram Kills 23 Chadian Soldiers, Injures 26 by adenigga(op): 8:45pm On May 05
Suspected Boko Haram fighters have killed at least 23 Chadian soldiers and wounded 26 others on a military position in the Lake Chad region.

According to a statement issued by the Chadian military, the terrorists launched the assault late Monday night on a base located on the island of Barka Tolorom, within Lake Chad.

The army said troops engaged the attackers in a fierce firefight, eventually repelling the assault and inflicting significant casualties on the insurgents, although the exact number of those killed was not disclosed.

President Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno condemned the attack, describing it as a “cowardly” act by Boko Haram against the country’s armed forces.

In a statement, the president expressed condolences to the families of the fallen soldiers and reaffirmed Chad’s commitment to intensifying military operations against terrorist groups operating in the Lake Chad basin.

He said the country would continue its fight “with renewed determination” until insurgent threats are fully neutralised.

The Lake Chad region, which borders Nigeria, Niger, and Cameroon, has remained a hotspot for Boko Haram and its splinter factions, with frequent cross-border attacks targeting both military formations and civilian communities.

Security sources note that Chadian forces have come under increasing pressure in recent months, with the latest attack recalling a similar incident in October 2024 in which about 40 soldiers were killed in the same region.

Military authorities said operations were ongoing to secure the area and prevent further incursions by insurgent elements.

TravelUS Lifts Visa Freeze On Nigerian Doctors, Others by adenigga(op): 11:35am On May 05
The United States has reversed a policy that suspended visa processing for foreign-trained doctors, allowing physicians from Nigeria and about 38 other countries to resume their applications.

According to a report by The New York Times, the earlier restriction—introduced in January—had halted decisions on visa extensions, work permits, and green cards for citizens of nearly 39 countries under the US travel ban system.

The move left many foreign-trained doctors unable to practise.

The US Citizenship and Immigration Services has now updated its guidelines to exempt medical doctors from the freeze, enabling their applications to move forward.

A spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security confirmed the development, stating that, “Applications associated with medical physicians will continue processing.”

The policy reversal comes amid a growing healthcare staffing crisis in the US, where authorities estimate a shortage of about 65,000 doctors—a gap expected to widen in the coming years.

Foreign-trained physicians make up roughly a quarter of the US medical workforce, with many serving in primary care roles, particularly in rural and underserved communities.

The earlier visa freeze had forced some doctors into administrative leave, while others faced possible job losses due to stalled approvals.

With processing now resumed, the move is expected to ease pressure on hospitals and allow affected doctors, including Nigerians, to continue their practice.

[
b]A former Kogi-West lawmaker, Senator Dino Melaye, has said he will rather spend his money buying cars than on cocaine and homosexuals like some others.

Melaye said this in a post on Sunday while reacting to criticisms from musician, Speed Darlington.

The former lawmaker, who boasts of over eight luxury cars including a Rolls Royce, Bentley, Mercedes Benz G Class, and a Ferrari, had posted photos of his fleet of cars on social media.

Darlington, who expressed surprise at Melaye’s collection, said, “Oh My God! Look at one man’s wealth and all he had to do was to be a Nigerian senator. Good thing he did not win the governorship election. They broke his leg during that election. No single man should have this much wealth and his only job was to be a senator.”

In his reaction, however, Melaye said he had a penchant for buying cars and no one should pester him.

“Everyone spends his or her on what he or she likes. My passion is to collect automobiles. Occults can buy blood for any amount. Homosexuals spend so much on same sex; some on babalawos (witch doctors); some hide their money in Switzerland while some bury ego (money) and some spend on cocaine. I am happy. I no even know say you dey vex. Kuro lona.”

Melaye, who is a member of the Peoples Democratic Party, was sacked by the Supreme Court late last year and lost a rerun election ordered by the court.

CrimeSuspected Herders Kill Four In Fresh Benue Community Attack by adenigga(op): 4:28pm On May 03
Suspected armed herders have reportedly killed four people in a fresh attack on Aila Odugheho in Agatu Local Government Area of Benue State.

The incident, according to a local source, happened on Sunday morning when the victims were said to be walking along the Aila Odugheho road to a nearby village.

A resident, who identified himself as Danny Uloko, told journalists in a telephone interview that the suspected herders ambushed the victims on their way to the community.

Uloko said, “The victims were walking along Aila Odugheho road to a nearby community when the Fulani herders ambushed them and killed them.”

He gave the names of the deceased as Ochefije Elijah Ojema, Igojuju Husaini, Odiya Ochowehi, and Ochoyoda Adejo.

The Chairman of Agatu Local Government Area, Melvin Ejeh, confirmed the attack, stating that four people were killed.

Ejeh said that due to the presence of security operatives in the area, armed herders now find it difficult to invade some of the communities but have resorted to ambush tactics.

“It is true the incident happened today (Sunday morning). Four of our people were killed.

“Because of the robust security strategies we have put in place in the communities, it is now difficult to attack and overrun any community in Agatu Local Government Area.

“Hence, they have resorted to ambush, which is more complex to confront. However, clearance operations are currently ongoing to rid the community forest of bandits,”
he said.

Ejeh added that security agencies, including the Divisional Police Officer and local vigilantes, were already in the area carrying out clearance operations.

When contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Udeme Edet, said she had yet to receive a report, noting that efforts to reach the Agatu Divisional Police Officer had been unsuccessful.

“I am yet to get the report because I have not been able to reach the DPO in Agatu,” she said.

Killings by suspected armed herders and local militias have intensified in recent days in the local government area.

Penultimate Thursday, gunmen invaded Olegabulu community in the same Agatu LGA and killed a traditional ruler, his wife, son, and two others.

CrimeNigerian, Benin Militias Kill 41 Herders In Border Raid — Report by adenigga(op): 2:24pm On May 03
A state-backed Nigerian militia, operating alongside the military, killed scores of ethnic Fulani herders in a raid, local sources have told AFP.

The herders were killed in an operation that also involved vigilantes from Benin, just across the border from Niger state, after the herders were accused of being informants for the jihadist group Ansaru, the sources said.

The Nigerian vigilantes from Bussa district raided herding Fulani settlements around Kabe, in neighbouring Borgu, in a massacre that also saw sweeping mass arrests, the sources said.

On Thursday, security personnel went door-to-door in Fulani herding settlements, arresting young men suspected of being informants for the al-Qaeda-linked Ansaru group, shooting those who resisted, the sources said.

“Security personnel killed 41 suspected Ansaru informants in the raids in which many others were arrested,” said Ahmad Ali, a community leader from the nearby village of Konkoso.

“It was a joint operation between community vigilantes and those from neighbouring Benin, with the help of Nigerian soldiers,” Ali added.

A Nigerian military spokesman declined to comment and said he would seek more details of the alleged incident.

It was unclear if the Beninese military was aware of or involved in the operation. A Beninese military spokesman did not respond to a request for comment.

Stigmatised as sympathisers

Niger is one of several states in central and northwestern Nigeria that have for years been terrorised by cattle rustling and kidnapping-for-ransom gangs locally known as “bandits”, which raid communities, kill residents and loot homes.

In recent years jihadist groups fighting a 17-year insurgency in the northeast have also established a foothold in Niger state, a gold-rich agricultural hub.

Occasional cooperation between bandits and jihadists has drawn the concern of security analysts.

The recruitment of Fulanis by jihadist groups in the neighbouring Sahel has sparked deadly reprisal attacks on Fulani civilians in those countries by militaries and militias.

Researchers have warned that such reprisals can backfire by pushing some Fulanis to join jihadist groups for their own safety.

In Nigeria, the presence of Fulanis in “bandit” gangs has sometimes seen authorities close down markets to the cattle trade, which has an outsize effect on Fulanis, many of whom are herders.

Fulanis are also often victims of armed groups themselves.

Community tensions

A humanitarian source providing aid to communities displaced by violence in the area put the toll slightly lower, at 38, blaming “vigilantes from Nigeria and Benin”.

A resident of Kabe named Abubakar, who declined to give his last name, said the operation was a “pre-emptive raid” following threats by the Fulani herders to disrupt farming activities in the area, after the recent killing of their two kinsmen accused of being Ansaru informants in the nearby community of Sabalunna.

In reprisals for the killing of those two individuals, Ansaru attacked and burnt down Sabalunna, warning “they would never condone the killing of their people”, said Abubakar, who confirmed the toll of 41.

“The Fulani herders openly threatened to disrupt farming this rainy season as they would be attacking farmers while working on their farms in the bush,” he said.

“This prompted the pre-emptive raid.”

Christianity EtcBishops Disagree With Adeboye On Marriage Advice To Men by adenigga(op): 6:43am On May 03
Bishops under the aegis of the Ecumenical Synods of Bishops, Archbishops, Apostles and Senior Clergy have disagreed with the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, over his warning that men should not marry women who cannot cook.

Adeboye gave the warning while sharing marital guidelines for young men during the May edition of the Holy Ghost Service on Saturday.

He cautioned that marrying based solely on beauty or ignoring practical considerations could lead to what he described as a “deep trap.”

The cleric stressed that spiritual discernment and domestic competence should take precedence over physical attraction and social status, warning men not to be carried away by outward appearance.

He said, “There are many demons that are very beautiful. If you marry because of beauty, you might choose a demon. I’m not saying all beautiful people are demonic. If it’s beauty alone that leads you into marriage, it’s a deep trap.

Citing Sarah and the Shunamite woman as biblical examples of hospitable cooks, Adeboye said, “Don’t marry a girl who cannot cook. We are talking of excellent counsel. Only I can tell you these things. Even if a prophet says this is your wife, if she can’t cook, say ‘Thank you, keep her.’”

Commenting on the warning, the International Secretary of the Bishops, Archbishop Osazee William, disagreed with Adeboye’s position, describing it as an opinion rather than a scriptural standard.

William, while speaking with Sunday PUNCH said, “Is it scriptural for a man not to marry a woman who cannot cook? Even men can cook. This is not directly opposing the father of faith, who is a revered God’s general, but this is an opinion.”

The President of the International Fellowship of Ecumenical Ministries argued that cooking ability should not be used as a major yardstick for marriage, noting that character and values are more important.

He added that individuals who lack cooking skills could learn over time, stressing that marriage decisions should be based on broader qualities.

“What about a good cook that is a witch? What about a woman who can cook and becomes obsessed with cooking to the extent that she loses character? You can know how to cook and not be neat or hygienic. Man shall not live by bread alone.

“If a person does not know how to cook, the person can learn. You can even buy a cookery book. I think the yardstick for marrying is a good, godly and industrious character.”

According to him, economic realities have also reshaped family roles, with some women serving as breadwinners and having limited time for domestic duties.

“There are so many women who are breadwinners and do not have time to cook. You can be a good cook and all you know is cooking and nothing else. Men need more than delicious meals. Such a career woman only needs to employ a good cook,” he added.

Earlier at the programme, Adeboye also advised men to reconsider marriage plans if a prospective bride insists on a wedding that could plunge them into debt.

On personal appearance, the cleric warned against excessive use of cosmetics, including false hair, eyelashes and nails, urging men to look beyond outward beauty.

“Don’t marry a girl who does not do things in moderation. No matter how close you are to a wedding and your girl is suggesting a wedding that is going to cost you everything you have and get you into debt, call it off.

“The girl you are going to marry must not be heavily made up. If you look at the girl, the hair on her head is from India. The eyelashes are false. The nails of the hand are false. The nails of the toes are false. You must ask yourself the question, ‘What is behind the mask?”

Citing the Bible, he added that excessive makeup could be a sign of concealment, referencing the character Jezebel in 2 Kings 9:30–37.

CrimeGunmen Attack Police Base In Kwara, Kill Three by adenigga(op): 4:27am On May 03
At least three police officers have been killed and two others injured after suspected terrorists attacked a Police Mobile Force (PMF) camp in Tenebo community, Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State.

The attack, which occurred in the early hours of Saturday, caused panic in the agrarian community as residents fled their homes following heavy gunfire.

Sources said the assailants arrived in large numbers and launched a surprise attack on the PMF camp, overpowering officers on duty before killing three and injuring two others.

A resident, Suleiman Issa, described the moment of the attack.

“This ugly killings happened at the early hours of 1am, just at midnight in Tenebo village, Kaiama.

“A terrible situation happened! Bandits came in their large numbers and invaded the villagers, people were killed and some were wounded,” Issa said.

The spokesperson for the Kwara State Police Command, Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, confirmed the incident.

“I regret to confirm that an attack on the PMF Camp occurred in the early hours of today. I will provide more accurate and detailed information shortly. Thank you,” he said.

The latest attack highlights continued insecurity in parts of Kaiama Local Government Area, where armed groups have repeatedly targeted communities and security formations.

On April 20, suspected terrorists reportedly overran a joint security outpost in Kemanji community, killing at least three soldiers and two vigilantes and carting away an army gun truck and other equipment.

On April 10, five members of a local forest guard unit were killed in Nuku community, with attackers also burning operational vehicles and facilities.

The violence follows an earlier February 2026 incident in Woro and Nuku communities, where over 200 people were reportedly killed and about 176 abducted, including women and children.

PoliticsYou Are Favouring Christians Over Muslims, MURIC Tells FG by adenigga(op): 8:17pm On May 02
The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has accused the Federal Government (FG) of favouritism over the ongoing construction of a N25 billion church building at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.

‎In a statement, Executive Director of MURIC, Professor Ishaq Akintola, also slammed the Federal Government for giving out the sum of N2 billion to victims of violence in Plateau State “without a corresponding donation to victims of the same violence in Borno, Sokoto, Zamfara, Kebbi, Kwara, etc”.

He said: ‎”The Federal Government and the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) have flagged off the construction of a N25 billion (25 billion naira) ecumenical chapel and pilgrimage centre located at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.

”FG should explain this preferential treatment. Nigerian Muslims deserve better than this. Tongues are wagging in the mosques. Muslim social media platforms are buzzing with frenzy over this lopsided arrangement.

‎”The sum of N2 billion was also given to victims of violence in Plateau State without a corresponding donation to victims of the same violence in Borno, Sokoto, Zamfara, Kebbi, Kwara, etc. Is this fair?

‎”In another disturbing development, N1.2 billion was allegedly donated to all the 19 states of Northern Nigeria for the approaching ‘Id al-kabir (Salah). The identity of the donor cannot be disclosed here for lack of proper reference though it is as close to FG as it’s jugular vein.

‎”How can only one state be given N2 billion while all the 19 states in the North are asked to share N1.2 billion? But is it right to treat Muslims like second class citizens, a la animal farm?

”It is interesting to note that critics of the Muslim-Muslim ticket are silent over this unequal treatment of Muslims and Christians by our ‘Muslim-Muslim’ government.

”So we must ask FG to tell Nigerians when land of equal size will be given to the Muslims to build their grand national mosque. Of course FG must not forget the N25 billion cooling off somewhere in the Central Bank which will accompany the land allocation for Muslims.

”What is good for the goose is equally good for the gander. It is our right, and our right is our right. The question is not ‘if’ but ‘when’ and the sooner the better. No excuses.”

PoliticsStop Borrowing Or Nigeria Will Sink – Primate Ayodele Cautions Tinubu by adenigga(op): 9:07pm On May 01
The leader of the INRI Evangelical Spiritual Church, Primate Elijah Ayodele, has warned President Bola Ahmed Tinubu about his administration’s frequent borrowing to fund projects in the country.

In a statement signed by his media aide, Osho Oluwatosin, Primate Ayodele stated that frequent borrowing indicates the country has not effectively utilized its resources to improve the nation.

He said that continuous loans will cause the country’s economy to decline if proper attention isn’t given.

The prophet said the country has resources in many states like Taraba, Zamfara, Kogi and others, and he mentioned that these resources can help the country become self-sufficient.

“Stop borrowing money, we have resources in states like Taraba, Zamfara. Nigeria will go on sale with the way Tinubu is going about borrowing money. The country will sink if we are not careful.”

Primate Ayodele made it known that Nigeria is in debt that can never be fully repaid, despite the fact that there are resources to save the economy instead of debt.

He cautioned the president not to allow it to get to a stage where no country wants to borrow Nigeria’s money anymore.

“We are on a debt that can never be fully repaid, but we can use what we have to save the economy instead of these debts.

“The country is rich already; let us not get to a level where nobody would want to borrow from us money again.”

He further warned that borrowing will kill the Nigerian economy.

“Borrowing will kill the Nigerian economy; use resources in some of our states to make the country better,” he added.

CrimeCorruption: There Are Pastors, Imams In EFCC Custody by adenigga(op): 7:59pm On May 01
Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Ola Olukoyede, has disclosed that several religious leaders, including Pastors and Imams, are currently in detention over fraud-related cases.

He said others have already been convicted.

The EFCC chairman spoke at the Jerry Eze Foundation business grant award ceremony.

According to him, corruption was not limited to political or corporate spaces.

He insisted that religious institutions have also come under scrutiny in anti-graft investigations.

“I have a lot of them in my holding facility as I’m talking to you. I have a lot of them that are convicted for fraudulent practices,” he said.

He argued that misconduct should be seen as a personal failure rather than a reflection of any faith.

Christian and Islamic institutions, he noted, are equally vulnerable to abuse, noting that anti-corruption enforcement has reached both the pulpit and the mosque.

He said the agency’s experience has shown that integrity is rooted in individual character, not titles or religious identity.

Olukoyede’s remarks also revived attention on regulatory powers granted under the Companies and Allied Matters Act.

The act empowers authorities to intervene in the affairs of religious bodies and associations where fraud, misconduct or mismanagement is suspected.

The law, signed in 2020, stirred fierce resistance from many church leaders at the time, with critics describing it as state interference in religious affairs.

But in a separate revelation, Olukoyede disclosed that the EFCC once investigated Jerry Eze, founder of Streams of Joy International, following intelligence reports linking his accounts to suspicious foreign inflows.

According to him, the probe lasted six months and tracked transactions from countries including Colombia, the United States, Sri Lanka and Togo.

“We saw dollars and pounds dropping in like raindrops,” he said.

The anti-graft chief, however, said the investigation found no evidence of money laundering or financial misconduct against the cleric.

Rather than prosecution, he said the outcome reinforced the agency’s belief that anti-corruption work must also include recognising transparency and ethical conduct.

“People identify us with criminals, with suspects, and all of that. I also have a preventive mandate,” Olukoyede said.

“EFCC should also be identified with precious people who have integrity. We must drum them up”, he stated.

He described Jerry Eze as deserving of institutional validation for demonstrating integrity, though he added jokingly that no formal clearance letter would be issued as the commission would continue to monitor financial activities within its statutory powers.

PoliticsTinubu: They Want To Get Rid Of Me But I’m A Stubborn Politician by adenigga(op): 3:38am On Apr 30
President Bola Tinubu has described himself as a “very stubborn politician” whom his enemies tried to get rid off through insecurity

Speaking at the Presidential Villa in Abuja while receiving stakeholders from Plateau State led by Governor Caleb Muftwang, on Tuesday night, Tinubu said he had remained resolute despite criticism over insecurity.

“You are playing to the hand of agents, including my own enemies, who want to use insecurity to get rid of me. But I’m a very stubborn politician. I just refuse to go. And I will campaign for my second term,” he said.

The President said the Federal Government would act once those instigating or financing the violence are identified.

“If you identify and you know the name of troublemakers, agents or provocateurs who want to continue killing or instigate killing, let us know.

“We will use the instrument of office to deal with them,”
Tinubu said.

He stressed that security agencies would not hesitate to move against such persons once credible intelligence is provided, insisting that the cycle of violence in the state must be broken.

Tinubu also endorsed a newly constituted peace committee involving former governors of Plateau, directing them to work as a single body to review existing white papers on past conflicts and present consolidated recommendations for implementation.

“Call one another. Ignore the Governor’s Committee if you have to, or incorporate them. Take that white paper, go through it among yourselves and agree to implement it.

“If the ones you have chosen before now are not working, you have to mix and amend membership.

“Forget those committees you mentioned to me, if it’s not working, it’s not working. Consider this group as the committee until we find a lasting solution,” he said.

The meeting follows a high-level engagement with the President in the wake of the Angwa Rukuba killings earlier this month.

Tinubu, who visited the state, met with some stakeholders, all in efforts to find lasting solution.

Former Governor Simon Lalong had suggested that the president should have a closed door meeting involving key past and present leaders of the state, including former governors and traditional rulers, to speak frankly and commit collectively to ending the violence.

“The solution to the problem of Plateau lies with the people. If we are ready for it, we will proffer the solution,” he had said.

“I saw it all. We went through a state of emergency and came out of it. We thought it was over, but it is rearing its head again.

“If you bring all of us together, Jang, Dariye, Lalong, Mutfwang and the traditional rulers, you may find a lasting solution because all of us have gone through it,” he said.

Lalong added that such a meeting, to be held with the President in Abuja, would allow stakeholders to “tell themselves the truth” and make a firm commitment to peace.

“We must reach a point where everybody agrees that there will be no more blood on Plateau,” he stressed, lamenting the continued loss of innocent lives.

BusinessDangote Raises Petrol Price By N75, To N1,275 Per Litre by adenigga(op): 12:42pm On Apr 29
The Dangote Refinery has increased its ex-depot price of Premium Motor Spirit by N75 per litre, deepening concerns over a fresh round of fuel price hikes across the country, as it also suspended product sales following a disruption in its Proforma Invoice process.

Price data obtained from Petroleumprice.ng and confirmation from a Dangote refinery official on Wednesday revealed that the refinery raised its petrol loading price from N1,200 per litre to N1,275 per litre, while coastal supply prices climbed to N1,215 per litre.

The development, which took effect amid operational adjustments, is already sending shockwaves through the downstream petroleum market.

The official confirmed the development, saying, “Yes, the increase of PMS to N1,275 per litre is true. Coastal price is N1,215.”

Another source familiar with the situation disclosed that the refinery halted its Proforma Invoice entry process at about 4:00 pm on Tuesday, effectively disrupting normal supply scheduling across its loading system.

The suspension, according to the sources, led to an immediate stoppage of both petrol and Automotive Gas Oil sales.

The suspension and price adjustment have triggered rapid reactions among traders and marketers, many of whom are now bracing for higher depot costs and a possible increase in pump prices nationwide.

Operators noted that such interruptions often translate quickly into higher logistics and distribution expenses, compounding pricing pressures along the value chain.

The development comes against the backdrop of rising global crude oil prices, which have significantly increased feedstock costs for refiners.

As of 10:35 am (WAT), Brent crude was trading at $114.80 per barrel, reflecting a 3.15 per cent increase, while West Texas Intermediate stood at $103.40 per barrel, up by 3.49 per cent.

The surge in international oil prices to heightened geopolitical tensions around the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global oil supply corridor. The spike in crude prices has raised replacement costs for refiners, forcing upward adjustments in refined product pricing.

Foreign AffairsUAE To Withdraw From OPEC, OPEC+ by adenigga(op): 3:04pm On Apr 28
The United Arab Emirates will withdraw from the OPEC and OPEC+ oil cartels to focus on “national interests”, a statement said on Tuesday, a bombshell announcement as energy prices soar over the Middle East war.

The UAE, one of the world’s top oil producers, which has previously baulked at OPEC production quotas, will pull out on Friday, a statement carried by the official WAM news agency said.

“This decision reflects the UAE’s long-term strategic and economic vision and evolving energy profile,” the statement said.

“During our time in the organisation, we made significant contributions and even greater sacrifices for the benefit of all.

“However, the time has come to focus our efforts on what our national interest dictates.”

Gulf oil shipments are currently being strangled by Iran’s blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, which flows past the UAE and normally carries one-fifth of the world’s oil.

The UAE, hard-hit by Iranian attacks, has also faced trouble in its relationship with powerful neighbour Saudi Arabia, the world’s top oil exporter and a dominant force within OPEC.

UAE Energy Minister Suhail Mohamed al-Mazrouei told Reuters the decision was taken after a careful look at the regional power’s energy strategies.

Asked whether the UAE consulted with Saudi Arabia, he said the UAE did not raise the issue with any other country.

“This is a policy decision, it has been done after a careful look at current and future policies related to level of production,” said the energy minister.

The move came after the UAE, a regional business hub and one of Washington’s most important allies, criticised fellow Arab states for not doing enough to protect it from numerous Iranian attacks during the war.
Anwar Gargash, the diplomatic adviser for the UAE president, criticised the Arab and Gulf response to the Iranian attacks in a session at the Gulf Influencers Forum on Monday.

PoliticsTinubu Orders Envoys To Rebrand Nigeria, Attract Investment by adenigga(op): 4:42am On Apr 28
President Bola Tinubu has charged Nigeria’s newly appointed ambassadors and high commissioners to work towards improving the country’s global image.

He also urged them to pursue foreign investments and strengthen strategic partnerships.

He gave the charge on Monday at the opening of an induction course for the envoys, held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja.

Represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, the President said their appointments reflected the administration’s confidence in their ability to advance Nigeria’s interests on the international stage.

A statement by the SGF’s Media Aide, Yomi Odunuga, read, “Tinubu charged Nigeria’s newly appointed ambassadors and high commissioners to aggressively pursue foreign investments, strengthen strategic partnerships and reposition the country’s global image in line with evolving diplomatic realities.”

Tinubu noted that the global system was undergoing rapid transformation driven by shifting geopolitical dynamics, economic uncertainties, technological disruptions, climate challenges and emerging security threats.

According to him, these developments made the role of diplomats more critical than ever, stressing the need for envoys to adopt modern, results-oriented approaches to diplomacy.

“The international system is evolving rapidly. We must be prepared to meet these challenges by focusing on how best to protect and promote Nigeria’s national interest,” Tinubu said.

He urged the envoys to combine traditional diplomacy with digital engagement, public diplomacy and strategic communication, while projecting Nigeria’s achievements under his administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

The President also emphasised the importance of telling Nigeria’s story in a credible and compelling manner to reshape global perceptions.

Tinubu further called on the envoys to be proactive and innovative in fostering partnerships, promoting trade and attracting foreign direct investment and technology to the country.

He added that safeguarding the welfare of Nigerians in the diaspora must remain a top priority for all missions.

In what he described as a policy shift, the President announced a reordering of Nigeria’s foreign policy framework, known as the 4D Doctrine.

Originally anchored on Democracy, Development, Demography and Diaspora, Tinubu said the priorities have now been rearranged to Demography, Development, Diaspora and Democracy.

He explained that the adjustment places Nigerians at the centre of foreign policy and aims to ensure that international engagements deliver tangible benefits to citizens.

“This re-ordering has put the Nigerian people at the centre of our foreign policy agenda and is aimed at harnessing outcomes for their maximum benefit,” he said.

Tinubu stressed the need for professionalism, integrity and patriotism in the conduct of diplomatic duties, noting that envoys served as both representatives of government and custodians of Nigeria’s image abroad.

He also underscored the importance of accountability, urging missions to be result-driven and prudent in resource management, with clear and measurable goals that contribute to national development.

The President encouraged participants to take full advantage of the induction programme, describing it as essential for equipping them with the skills required for effective diplomatic service in a rapidly changing world.

He commended the National Assembly for the swift confirmation of the nominees and urged the envoys to justify the confidence reposed in them.

“You have a special responsibility in helping to reposition Nigeria in global affairs. The world is watching,” Tinubu concluded.

Speaking at the opening session of the induction course, the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, emphasised the critical role of diplomats in shaping Nigeria’s international perception and advancing national interests.

She noted that while Nigeria had been bedevilled by numerous challenges, including insecurity, resource mobilisation and infrastructure deficits, ambassadors must not conceal these realities but rather draw constructive international attention to them.

She said, “Locally, our nation faces genuine challenges of insecurity, resource mobilisation, and infrastructure development.

“Your task is not to hide these realities but to secure international attention and partnership by amplifying the true picture that, despite these obstacles, this government’s commitment to resolving them remains unparalleled and consistent.”

Highlighting operational challenges, particularly funding constraints, the minister called for prudence and innovation in the discharge of duties.

“One challenge you will inevitably encounter at post is funding. You will find that, whereas your task is vast, the resources placed at your disposal are scarce.

“A lean budget, however, is not a license for failure; it is a call for prudency and ingenuity.

“We therefore look forward to your cooperation, to ensure improvement on all fronts, because Nigeria has entrusted you with its sovereignty, and sovereignty, even when poorly funded, must be exercised with excellence,” she stated.

The minister also underscored the importance of protecting the welfare of Nigerians in the diaspora, strengthening bilateral and multilateral relations, and maintaining the highest standard.

She further reminded the envoys that diplomatic immunity did not excuse misconduct, urging them to uphold transparency, discipline and adherence to established procedures in managing public resources.

The induction programme, she noted, would expose participants to key frameworks guiding diplomacy, including international conventions, regional protocols and Nigeria’s engagements on global platforms.
