Politics‘If I don’t give you electricity, don’t vote for me’ – Video of Tinubu’s promise by adenigga(op): 2:37pm On Mar 12
An old video of President Bola Tinubu promising constant electricity has resurfaced on the internet amid the epileptic power supply across the country.

DAILY POST reports that President Tinubu had during the presidential campaign tour in December 2022, declared that if elected, by all means necessary, Nigerians will have constant power supply.

In the video, the President declared that if his promise is not kept, Nigerians should not vote for him when he seeks re-election.

He said, “Whichever way, by all means necessary, you will have electricity, and you will not pay for estimated bill anymore. A promise made will be a promise kept.

“If I don’t keep the promise and I come for a second time, don’t vote for me. Unless I give you adequate reasons why I couldn’t deliver.”

The video began to resurface on Facebook and X following the power outage being experienced across the country.

DAILY POST reports that the Nigerian Independent System Operator, the grid manager, on Thursday last week said that electricity generation on the national grid fell to 3,940.53 megawatts as of 5:00 am, after several generating units shut down.

Business operators have been counting their losses as the price of fuel also continues to skyrocket.

Foreign AffairsWe’re Ready For Long War That Will Destroy World Economy – Iran by adenigga(op): 3:46am On Mar 12
Iran said Wednesday it was ready for a long war of attrition that would “destroy” the world economy, after firing on two commercial ships and threatening any vessels from the US or its allies.

As Tehran tightened its chokehold on the Strait of Hormuz, a vital sea passage for the global oil trade, US President Donald Trump said the war would end “soon” as there was little left for US forces to target in Iran.

Oil prices have surged since February 28, when the United States and Israel attacked Iran, killed its supreme leader and plunged the Middle East into war.

In an attempt to manage price jumps, the International Energy Agency said its member countries would unlock 400 million barrels of oil from their reserves – the biggest such release ever.

With the conflict now in its 12th day, Iran’s Revolutionary Guard vowed to target “economic centres and banks” that it deems linked to US and Israeli interests, prompting more international firms to evacuate employees from Dubai.

But all eyes were on the Strait of Hormuz, through which 20 per cent of global crude and LNG passes.

The US and Israel “must consider the possibility that they will be engaged in a long-term war of attrition that will destroy the entire American economy and the world economy”, Ali Fadavi, advisor to the Revolutionary Guards’ commander-in-chief, told state television.

Iran said it had struck the Liberian-flagged container ship Express Rome and the Thai bulk carrier Mayuree Naree because they had entered the strait “after ignoring the warnings of the IRGC naval forces”.

Oman’s navy rescued 20 crew members, but efforts were underway to find three more. Pictures shared by the Thai navy showed black smoke pouring out of the vessel.

Gulf airport, fuel tanks hit

Analysts say a prolonged closure of the strait, which also carries a third of the fertiliser for world food production, would have a devastating effect on the global economy, particularly in Asia and Europe.

French President Emmanuel Macron urged G7 leaders to act to restore navigation in the strait “as soon as possible”, while the UN asked for all parties to allow humanitarian cargo to transit.

Iran has amplified the economic fallout by targeting US allies in the Gulf.

On Wednesday, drones fell near Dubai airport, injuring four people, the city’s government said.

US financial service group Citi and British consulting group Deloitte have asked employees to evacuate their offices in Dubai, sources told AFP.

Drones also hit fuel tanks at Oman’s Salalah port, Oman News Agency reported.

Private maritime security company Vanguard Tech reported the suspension of the port’s operations after the attack on its southern section.

The economic impact is piling pressure on Trump, who faces accusations that the White House launched the war without preparing for consequences.

“Any time I want it to end, it will end,” Trump was quoted as saying in an interview with Axios.

In Israel, Defence Minister Israel Katz said, “This operation will continue without any time limit, as long as necessary.”

Israel said it had begun a new “wide-scale wave of strikes” across Iran and against Hezbollah targets in Lebanon’s capital Beirut.

Israeli strikes hit an apartment building in central Beirut in the second targeting of the heart of the capital since the Middle East war began.

AFPTV’s live broadcast captured the sound of an air strike followed by a fireball erupting in an apartment within a multi-storey residential building in Beirut.

An AFP correspondent saw destroyed walls in the building’s seventh and eighth floors, with damaged cars nearby and security forces present at the scene.

When the strike hit, “I ran from room to room, pulled my wife and daughter out of the rooms and hid them behind a wall, then the second strike hit”, said Fawzi Asmar, owner of a bakery on the street where the strike took place.

The Israeli-US attacks came weeks after Iranian authorities crushed mass protests, although the United States and Israel say they are not necessarily seeking to topple the Islamic Republic.

Iranian authorities warned against dissent at home, with the country’s police chief saying protesters would be viewed and dealt with as “enemies”.

“All our forces are also ready, with their hands on the trigger, prepared to defend their revolution,” national police chief Ahmad-Reza Radan said, in comments aired by IRIB.

In Iran, ordinary people were doing the best they could to adapt to living under frequent US-Israeli strikes.

“We’ve put our faith in God. For now, there’s food in the shops,” Tehran resident Mahvash, 70, told AFP journalists in Paris.

“People are calm,” said another resident. “They are getting used to living despite everything and adapting – as best they can – to this situation.”

The United States and Israel launched the war with an attack that killed Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

His son Mojtaba Khamenei has been named his successor, though he has yet to appear in public, amid reports that he has been wounded.

“I heard news that Mr Mojtaba Khamenei had been injured. I have asked some friends who had connections,” the Iranian president’s son, Yousef Pezeshkian, wrote in a post on his Telegram channel.

Tehran’s ambassador to Cyprus, Alireza Salarian, told The Guardian newspaper on Wednesday that Khamenei was injured in the same strike that killed his father.

Iran’s health ministry said on March 8 that more than 1,200 people had been killed in US and Israeli strikes, and more than 10,000 civilians injured.

CrimeDrama As Policemen Invade Ondo Court Premises To Arrest Bricklayer by adenigga(op): 3:07am On Mar 12
Pandemonium broke out at the Ondo State High Court on Wednesday following the alleged invasion of the court premises by operatives from the Police Special Weapons and Tactics, SWAT, unit, Lagos, who attempted to arrest one Ojo Ajisafe, a 34-year-old bricklayer, over a case that was already before the court.

Reports indicate that Ajisafe was in court on Wednesday for proceedings in a case of attempted murder linked to a long-running land dispute in the Ondo East Local Government Area of the state.

But in a dramatic turn of events, the police officers, reportedly from the Lagos State Command, arrived at the court complex and picked him up while the case was being heard.

According to eyewitnesses, the operatives, who were initially not in uniform, stormed the court, sparking fears that they might be kidnappers.

However, the situation became clear when those on the court premises later discovered that the men were police officers from the Lagos Command.

While the officers were still in court, Ajisafe’s counsel, Femi Akinbinu, alerted the presiding judge about the development, describing it as a “Gestapo-style invasion” of the court premises.

Eyewitnesses said the presiding judge, upon hearing of the officers’ intention, expressed shock but was unable to immediately stop the arrest. angry

It was gathered that the move to have the bricklayer arrested followed a petition reportedly submitted to the SWAT unit of the Lagos Command over a murder case.

However, those familiar with the case stated that the murder allegation was what the Ondo High Court was already hearing.

PoliticsHold Your Lawmakers Accountable, Akpabio Urges Nigerians by adenigga(op): 5:08pm On Mar 10
President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, on Tuesday urged Nigerians to hold their elected representatives accountable and actively engage lawmakers on issues affecting their communities, stressing that democratic governance thrives when citizens participate meaningfully in the legislative process.

Akpabio stated this while delivering his address at the resumption of plenary in the Nigerian Senate after a brief adjournment that allowed various committees to carry out legislative assignments.

He also described the Senate as a “workshop of solutions” rather than a mere arena for political debates, insisting that the upper legislative chamber remains committed to addressing the nation’s pressing challenges through deliberate policy actions.

Addressing the chamber, Akpabio said, “The Senate is not merely a theatre of debate; it is a workshop of solutions. Where social media magnifies the noise of the moment, the Senate addresses the substance of the problem. Where the digital arena stirs emotion, the legislative process pursues resolution.

“I therefore encourage Nigerians everywhere: engage your representatives. Bring your concerns to those whom you have entrusted with the responsibility of speaking on your behalf. For it is through the instrument of representation that grievances are transformed into policy and concerns into action.”

The Senate President further highlighted the importance of citizen engagement in a democracy, noting that lawmakers are elected to represent the interests and concerns of the people.

He said, “We assemble once again in this Senate after our brief adjournment, which enabled our committees to carry out important legislative work. Yet we do so with the full knowledge that while legislatures may adjourn, the life of a nation never pauses.

“The burdens of governance do not take leave. The task of representation lies at the very heart of the democratic enterprise. Representation is not an abstraction written only in constitutional language. It is a living covenant between the people and those whom they elect to speak in their name.”

He also acknowledged the growing influence of social media in shaping public discourse but emphasised that legislative processes remain essential in translating public concerns into concrete policy decisions.

The former Akwa Ibom governor also drew attention to the significance of the national budget currently before the National Assembly, describing it as a key policy instrument that reflects the country’s development priorities and aspirations.

“Among the pressing matters before this chamber stands the national budget — that great ledger of national purpose in which the hopes of millions are translated into the language of public policy. A budget is more than figures on paper. It is a declaration of national intention.

“It tells our citizens where we choose to invest our energies, what priorities we pursue, and what future we seek to build,” he noted.

His remarks come as the National Assembly of Nigeria resumes legislative activities with the consideration of major national issues, including the 2026 Appropriation Bill, constitutional amendments and other policy reforms expected to shape the country’s governance landscape.

Reflecting on Nigeria’s current challenges, Akpabio urged lawmakers to remain focused on delivering solutions that will strengthen institutions and improve the lives of citizens.

“Nigeria stands today at a moment that calls for clarity of purpose and steadfastness of spirit. The challenges before us are real. But history teaches us that great nations are not built by those who shrink from difficulty; they are built by those who confront it with courage and determination.

“We must therefore ensure that public resources are deployed in ways that promote development, strengthen institutions, expand opportunity, and uplift the lives of our citizens,” he stated.

The Senate President concluded by calling on senators to place national interest above political differences as deliberations resume.

“Let us debate with vigour but act with wisdom. Let us differ in opinion but remain united in our duty to the Republic. For above all our political differences stands a higher obligation — the obligation to serve Nigeria faithfully and to secure for our people a future worthy of their sacrifice and hope.”

PoliticsDISCOs Generated ₦207 Billion From Power Bills In December — NERC by adenigga(op): 12:28pm On Mar 08
The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) says electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos) collected N207.49 billion from customers in December 2025.

The regulator disclosed this in its December commercial performance factsheet published on its website in Abuja at the weekend.

According to the report, the 11 electricity distribution companies billed consumers N258.66 billion during the month.

“Out of the billed amount, the companies collected N207.49 billion, leaving a revenue shortfall of N51.17 billion,” the commission said.

It noted that the figures translate to a collection efficiency of 80.22 per cent across the 11 electricity distribution companies operating on the national grid.

The factsheet said the utilities received electricity worth N309.65 billion from the grid in December.

However, only N258.66 billion of the energy supplied was successfully billed to customers, representing a billing efficiency of 83.53 per cent.

The regulator said the actual average revenue realised by DisCos stood at N98.97 per kilowatt hour.

This compares with an allowed average tariff of N124.30 per kilowatt hour, giving the industry a revenue recovery efficiency of 79.62 per cent.

A breakdown showed that Abuja Electricity Distribution Company recorded the highest revenue collection during the month.

The company collected N38.11 billion from N46.68 billion billed, representing a collection efficiency of 81.64 per cent.

Ikeja Electric collected N36.20 billion out of N43.41 billion billed, achieving 83.38 per cent collection efficiency.

Similarly, Eko Electricity Distribution Company realised N38.01 billion from N41.41 billion billed, translating to 91.79 per cent collection efficiency.

The commission said Benin Electricity Distribution Company collected N18.38 billion from N21.53 billion billed.

It added that Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company recovered N17.62 billion out of N21.6 billion billed.

Also, Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company collected N23.60 billion from N28.34 billion billed.

Enugu Electricity Distribution Company realised N17.57 billion from N23.08 billion billed during the review period.

Kano Electricity Distribution Company collected N8.98 billion from N15.64 billion billed, representing 57.45 per cent collection efficiency.

The report added that Yola Electricity Distribution Company realised N3.55 billion from N4.25 billion billed.

According to the regulator, Jos Electricity Distribution Company recorded the lowest collection efficiency at 42.92 per cent.

It said the company collected N5.43 billion from N12.67 billion billed in December.

The commission, however, noted that data for Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company was unavailable.

It attributed the gap to an ongoing upgrade of the company’s billing system to meet regulatory requirements.

PoliticsPetrol Price To Hit ₦1,050 by adenigga(op): 3:54am On Mar 07
The Dangote Petroleum Refinery has increased its Premium Motor Spirit gantry price to N995 per litre, marking a sharp N221 rise within four days.

This comes amid volatility in global crude oil prices and rising replacement costs.

A senior official of the refinery confirmed the development to Saturday PUNCH on Friday night, explaining that the latest price adjustment followed recent shifts in global oil market fundamentals.

“Yes, the price has been reviewed. The new gantry price is now N995 per litre,” the official said on condition of anonymity.”

The new price represents an increase from N874 per litre, which was introduced earlier this week after the refinery raised its ex-depot price from N774 to N874 per litre.

With the latest revision, the refinery’s petrol price has climbed from N774 to N995 per litre within four days.

Checks on petroleumprice.ng, also confirmed that the new gantry price had already been updated on the portal, signalling a shift in domestic downstream pricing benchmarks.

The latest price adjustment could trigger a fresh increase in retail pump prices across the country, with petrol likely to sell above N1,050 per litre in several locations depending on transportation costs and marketers’ margins.

It also followed a brief halt in petrol loading operations at the refinery, a development that had earlier sparked speculation among marketers that another price increase might be imminent.

Industry sources confirmed that truck-out operations for petrol were suspended at about 2:00am on Friday, leaving depot owners and bulk marketers uncertain about the refinery’s next pricing direction.

Market participants noted that similar pauses in petrol loading at the facility have historically preceded price adjustments.

Officials at the refinery have repeatedly defended its pricing decisions, insisting that petrol prices must reflect prevailing global crude oil prices, logistics costs and operational realities.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the refinery emphasised that it does not arbitrarily determine prices but adjusts them based on international market movements and the cost of crude oil used for refining.

The refinery said its pricing strategy reflected Nigeria’s transition to a fully deregulated downstream petroleum market, where petrol prices are now largely influenced by global crude oil prices, foreign exchange rates and supply dynamics.

The refinery said it has absorbed about 20 percent of the rising costs in order to help ease pressure on the domestic market.

Amid the escalating tensions in the Middle East, data from the Major Energies Marketers Association of Nigeria has shown that a litre of imported petrol is about N64 cheaper than the one produced by the Dangote Petroleum Refinery.

Data by MEMAN indicated that Dangote’s petrol gantry price was N874 per litre as of Monday, while the landing cost of imported petrol was N809.37 per litre, showing a difference of about N64 between the two sources.

MEMAN also reported that Dangote’s diesel price was N1,169.42, while imported diesel was N1,125.70 per litre.

Politics2027: Four Ministers To Quit Tinubu’s Cabinet by adenigga(op): 3:38am On Mar 07
Fresh political calculations ahead of the 2027 general elections may trigger a shake-up in the cabinet of President Bola Tinubu as some ministers are reportedly weighing resignation to pursue their political ambitions in their home states.

Findings by Saturday PUNCH revealed that at least four cabinet members are already positioning themselves for state-level contests, particularly where incumbent governors will complete their constitutionally allowed two terms in 2027.

Among those being mentioned are Adebayo Adelabu (Minister of Power), Muhammad Pate (Minister of Health and Social Welfare), Yusuf Tuggar (Minister of Foreign Affairs) and the Minister of State for Labour, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha.

The Independent National Electoral Commission recently revised the electoral timetable, setting party primaries between April 22 and May 20.

By law, it is required that holders of appointed offices resign before the primaries.

According to 88(1) of the Electoral Act 2026, “A political appointee at any level shall not be a voting delegate or be voted for at the convention, congress, and primaries of any political party for the purpose of the nomination of candidates for any election.”

By implication, ministers, commissioners, special advisers, and other political appointees must resign their appointments before participating in party primaries either as aspirants or delegates.

Only Tinubu can order Adelabu’s resignation – Aide

Barring any last-minute change of plans, Adelabu is expected to resign his appointment in the coming weeks to vie for the Oyo governorship ticket under the All Progressives Congress.

The minister is believed to be preparing for another shot at the Oyo State governorship race after he was defeated by Governor Seyi Makinde of the Peoples Democratic Party in 2023.

Adelabu, a former deputy governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, who contested under the platform of Accord Party in 2023, has remained a key figure in the state’s political calculations.

During an engagement with stakeholders in the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry in Lagos towards the end of last year, Adelabu hinted that he would love to achieve some feats “before I leave office.”

In a trending video in October 2025, Adelabu formally declared his intention to run for governor in Oyo, recalling how he lost to Makinde in 2019 and 2023.

“I have now paid my dues. I contested against Seyi (Makinde) in 2019. In 2023, I also contested against Seyi, then as the sitting governor. But in 2027, God has shown that it’s our turn. It’s Adelabu’s turn. Anything that belongs to Adelabu belongs to us all,” he said last year.

Saturday PUNCH gathered that interested individuals are already jostling for the seat of the minister.

Speaking with Saturday PUNCH, an aide of the minister, Femi Awogboro, confirmed his intention to contest for the state governorship seat.

Awogboro said President Tinubu had yet to direct the minister to resign his appointment for his governorship ambition.

“As of now, the President has not told Adelabu to resign as minister. Only the President can tell him to resign and until that, Adelabu continues to perform his functions, but he is definitely contesting for Oyo governorship seat,” Awogboro said.

Awogboro said the minister would resign from office at the appropriate time to pursue his aspiration.

He said Adelabu remained focused on delivering on his current national assignment but would comply with all political and legal requirements at the right time.

“The minister will resign at the appropriate time. Perhaps he is not the only minister in the cabinet who intends to contest in 2027. Others with political ambitions will also do the needful when the time comes. The masses should rest assured of that,” he said.

He dismissed concerns about the resignation, noting that Adelabu had previously demonstrated his readiness to relinquish high office when necessary.

According to him, the minister voluntarily resigned his position as Deputy Governor (Operations) at the Central Bank of Nigeria in 2018.

However, the Publicity Secretary of the state chapter of the APC, Olawale Sadare, said no aspirant had officially declared interest in the 2027 elections because the party had not opened the process for such moves.

Sadare explained that the party would provide a level playing field for interested members once the appropriate time arrived.

“Anyone nursing an ambition at this stage should focus on consultations, especially at the grassroots level. When the time comes, they will have the full opportunity to pursue their political goals,” he added.

He, however, disclosed that individuals eyeing various political positions had begun consultations with party leaders, stakeholders and supporters across the grassroots ahead of the 2027 elections.

Pate, Tuggar battle for Bauchi governorship

Indications also emerged that Pate and Tuggar might be contesting the governorship seat of Bauchi State.

Pate, who hails from Mainari village in Ajili Ward of Misau Local Government Area, previously contested the governorship position.

Pate’s governorship ambition dates back to 2015 when he indicated an interest in contesting for the Bauchi State governorship election under the Peoples Democratic Party.

He contested the governorship seat in 2019 under the Peoples Redemption Party after suffering a defeat at the APC primary.

In 2023, Pate also failed to pick up the APC governorship ticket.

His recent political engagements, particularly initiatives centred on youth employment and empowerment across parts of the state, have intensified talks that he may be preparing to rejoin the governorship race.

Speaking with Saturday PUNCH, the Coordinator of Pate Media Centre in Dass Local Government Area, Ibrahim Abdulhamid, said although it was not yet official, indications suggested that Pate had agreed to participate in the governorship race following pressure from supporters.

Abdulhamid explained that a group of Bauchi indigenes who believed in his leadership capacity visited him in Abuja to encourage him to join the contest.

He said, “A team from Bauchi that has faith in his capabilities went all the way to Abuja and sought his participation in the gubernatorial contest and he has accepted the contest.”

Another supporter, Garo Misau, said he was among residents of Bauchi State urging Pate to run for the state’s top political office.

Misau described the minister as highly qualified for the position.

He said, “Pate is eminently qualified for the seat of governorship in Bauchi State. Not only Bauchi State; any state in the country that has a son like Professor Pate will want him to lead it. He has an international reputation of capabilities and humanitarian impact.”

Tuggar, who hails from Udubo in Gamawa Local Government Area of Bauchi State, is also believed to be eyeing the governorship seat.

Tuggar, who previously contested the position, is said to have sustained political activities across the state.

The Special Adviser to the Minister on Media and Communications Strategy, Alkasim Abdulkadir, confirmed Tuggar’s intention to contest for the state governorship seat.

Speaking with Saturday PUNCH, Abdulkadir said, “The minister is interested and aspires to run for the governorship seat of Bauchi State.”

When asked when Tuggar would resign his ministerial appointment, Abdulkadir said, “There is a time table released by INEC that stipulates all the rules and regulations for running, he (Tuggar) will adhere to this.”

Also speaking with Saturday PUNCH, a member of the Tuggar Foundation from Toro Local Government Area, Ahmad Tilde, expressed confidence that the minister possessed the qualifications to lead Bauchi State.

Tilde said many residents across the state believed Tuggar had the capacity to govern effectively.

“If not Tuggar, then who do you think can? As far as I am concerned, this is the view of many people I know in Bauchi State, Tuggar is the next governor of the state.”

Speaking on whether the APC had been formally notified of the ambition, Tilde noted that the matter remained unofficial.

“Although I am confident that Tuggar will contest, it is not official yet because it is not time for declaration,” he stated.

Both Pate and Tuggar were sighted at the Bauchi State APC convention held on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, further fueling speculations about their political ambition.

Onyejeocha to return to National Assembly

Onyejeocha, the Minister of State for Labour, had spent 16 years (2007–2023) as a member of the House of Representatives, representing the Isuikwuato/Umunneochi constituency of Abia State.

A top credible source told Saturday PUNCH that the Abia State indigene was planning to return to the National Assembly.

“She was elected four times into the House of Rep and she wants to go back,” the source said.

Attempts to speak with her proved abortive as she did not take her calls or respond to a text message sent to her as of the time of filing this report.

INEC disowns March 26 resignation deadline

Meanwhile, INEC has dismissed a report claiming it fixed March 26 as the deadline for ministers and other public office holders intending to contest elections to resign their appointments.

In a public notice posted on X (formerly Twitter) on Friday, the commission said the information circulating online did not originate from it.

“The commission wishes to state clearly that the information is false and did not emanate from INEC. INEC has not issued any such announcement, and the graphic being circulated is fake and misleading,” the statement read in part.

The commission urged members of the public, media organisations and political stakeholders to disregard the message and rely only on its verified channels for election-related information.

According to INEC, all official announcements and updates are published through its website and verified social media platforms, as well as official press releases from the commission.

Makinde urges appointees to declare intentions

In a related development, Oyo State Governor, Makinde, asked political appointees in his administration with aspirations for elective offices to openly declare their ambitions ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Makinde gave the directive on Thursday at the Oyo State Government-organised 2026 Iftar programme held at the frontage of the Banquet Hall, Government House, Agodi, Ibadan.

In a statement released on Friday by his Special Adviser on Media, Sulaimon Olarenwaju, the governor directed the aspirants to pursue their ambitions on the platform of the PDP.

Makinde said such aspirants could count on his support as long as their loyalty and commitment remained with the people and the development of the state.

He noted that the directive became necessary following claims that he had not given clearance to aspirants seeking political offices, especially those serving in his administration, despite the election timetable having been released by the INEC.

“I have read on social media that I have not given the go-ahead to political appointees who have ambitions to hold different political offices, including the governorship seat.

“So, henceforth, you are free. Whoever wants to contest for any position should bring out their billboards. And those of you who are bothered about the PDP crisis, add the party’s logo to the billboard, nothing will happen.”

But even the Koran teaches muslims to respect their political leaders as they derive their power from God, so what this cleric did was wrong. He allowed his political leaning to influence his speech. PoliticsSheikh Alkali Abubakar Salihu Zaria Who Criticised Tinubu Suspended by adenigga(op): 1:21pm On Mar 05
The suspension of a cleric, Sheikh Alkali Abubakar Salihu Zaria by the leadership of Jama’atu Izalatil Bid’ah Wa Iqamatis Sunnah (JIBWIS), Jos faction, is generating reactions.

Sheikh Alkali, who deployed to lead the Ramadan exegesis at Mokas Mosque in Damaturu, Yobe State, was suspended after he delivered a sermon in which criticised of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

His suspension reportedly followed a meeting conveyed by the National Chairman of the JIBWIS Council of Ulama, Muhammad Sani Yahaya Jingir, with the cleric as well as state and local representatives of the group in Yobe.

He was accused of using strongly-worded statements against certain individuals in the region as well as the president, addressing insecurity in manner said to be inconsistent with the organization’s established methodology.

During one of his sessions, Alkali criticized corrupt government officials, north west governors and President Tinubu, condemning the persistent insecurity in the region, particularly activities of kidnappers and bandits, saying the states governors and influential politicians from the region have not demonstrated political will to end the killings.

Alkali said, “He said Today people are abducted and traded as though they are cattle. Somebody will be abducted and taken to bush. They then negotiate the ransom. Families implore, even though the abductors are complete ignorant. They will beat and kick their victims. Often they will stamp their feet on their victim’s stomach in Ramadan.”

Also Alkali listed the tendency to revere individuals out fear of their machinations as one of the leading catastrophes the society may face.

He said, “One of the signs of catastrophes this generation will likely face is the tendency to revere individuals out of fear of their machinations. Look at how states governors fear Tinubu much more than they fear Allah. If you are in APC you are treated like a saint. If you are a member of the opposition, you will be treated like a devil. One will be confronted with trump up charges. Who is Tinubu? You deceived us. You are a deceiver and cheat.”

However, reacting to his suspension, in a post on his Facebook page, Alkali said he accepted the decision in good faith.

Comforting his followers, Alkali said Muhammad Sani Yahaya Jingir is not only a religious leader, but also a father figure to him.

He wrote, “To my followers, relatives and associates, I urge you to take heart. This was destined to happened. I cannot exceed the days Allah has written for me to lead Ramadan Qur’anic exegesis in Damaturu. I urge you to be disciplined and loyal. What Allah has decided is the best for us.”

Subsequently, youths took to their social media accounts to condemn the suspension, describing it as unjustifiable.

Commenting on the development, a Facebook user, Yusuf Katagun said that the Izala movement had proven to be part of the north’s biggest problems.

He wrote, “Izala is part of our biggest problems in the north. These are the same people who, in their loud voices and numbers, championed Muslim-Muslim ticket and brought this bad governance.”

Katagun said that the leadership of the organization is silent at a time when people need their voices the most.

But Ahmad Usman El-nafaty said that what the cleric did was theatrical, saying he did it to win the hearts of his followers.

‘There is nothing impressive in what Alkali said. It is theatrical. His plan is to cause some discontent among people. He is simply turning Tafseer sessions into comedy.”

However, Ibraheem Ahmad, another user, said that the suspension of Alkali was totally wrong and it is not according to the teaching of Islam.

He said, “Clerics are the last hope of the ordinary Nigerians. Many clerics called out Tinubu but they were not suspended because they did not endorsed Muslim-Muslim ticket.

“What Alkali said was the bitter truth. Islamic clerics should fear Allah. You are the representative of the people whose blood is being spilled.”

According to a popular Facebook, Datti Assalfiy, criticizing political leaders should not be enough reason to suspended the cleric.

He said, “Politicians are irreligious. This is the reason the cleric is quiet these days.”

PoliticsYoruba Nation To APC? Outrage Trails Sunday Igboho’s Appearance In Party Cap by adenigga(op): 2:35am On Mar 05
Yoruba nation activist, Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, was spotted wearing a fez cap displaying the logo of the ruling All Progressives Congress at a social function on Tuesday.

Igboho had attended the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rasheed Ladoja’s first Ramadan lecture after his coronation.

In the now-viral video, the Yoruba nation activist was seen greeting the monarch and the event’s guest lecturer, Chief Imam of Offa, Sheikh Muyideen Salmon, in the APC-branded cap.

However, the video has sparked conversations on social media, where many users referenced Nnamdi Kanu, drawing comparisons between the two separatist figures and their respective political directions.

A user who simply identified as #Jaythrilli said, “Sunday Igboho shamelessly gallivanting with an APC cap on. You can’t be fighting for Yoruba freedom and still dine with the people who impoverished the same Yoruba people. Reason I don’t rate him at all.”

Another user who claimed to be #Felixherbt wrote, “For those who still don’t understand what Mazi Nnamdi is fighting for, soon and very soon, you will all understand, but it will be too late.

“Today, Sunday Igboho is jumping around with the APC cartel. Remember that they promised Nnamdi Kanu a political position to win him over; he rejected it. My respect for MNK has doubled.

“From freeing the Yoruba from the claws of the Fulani, to kissing the ring. I present to you, Sunday Igboho!!! It will interest you to know that this is why Kanu is still in Sokoto,” one #Admiral_Cyborg opined.

One Samuel Olafusi on Facebook wrote, “Wait, is that an APC cap on his head? If you really join, you become a saint. Why has Nnamdi Kanu not been released? They got punished for the same reasons. Nigeria is truly divided, and we live in a transitional democracy.

Meanwhile, in his reaction, one #daddyfemzy queried, “You can’t really blame this guy. He was in an asylum, declared wanted by Buhari, dead or alive. The recent APC caucus brokered his return home courtesy of Ladoja. What do you expect? Let’s be practical. If you were him. Won’t you?”

Recall, Olayomi Koiki, spokesman for embattled Yoruba nation activist Sunday Adeyemo, also known as Sunday Igboho, says all arrangements have been concluded for his principal’s return to Nigeria after prominent monarchs persuaded President Bola Tinubu to remove Igboho’s name from the list of wanted persons.

According to Koiki, the traditional rulers who intervened include the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja; the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi; and the Olugbon of Orile Igbon, Oba Francis Alao, among others.

Igboho fled Nigeria on July 1, 2021, following a raid on his Ibadan residence by a combined team of the Department of State Services and the Nigerian Army over allegations of stockpiling arms and ammunition. The raid came amid Igboho’s campaign to evict armed Fulani herdsmen from the South-West in response to attacks on farmers.

During the raid, three of his aides were killed, and 13 others were arrested. Igboho fled to the Benin Republic, intending to fly to Germany, but was arrested at Cotonou Airport on July 19, 2021, and detained for over a year before being released in March 2022.

Under the previous administration of the late President Muhammadu Buhari, Igboho was declared wanted, denied a Nigerian passport, and had his bank accounts frozen despite favourable court rulings.

In 2025, during a visit to the Olugbon Palace in Orile Igbon, Surulere Local Government of Oyo State, Igboho expressed frustration at living in exile and appealed to President Tinubu’s administration to remove his name from the wanted list. He also made the appeal to the Olubadan, Oba Ladoja.

Koiki said in a Sunday statement that Igboho has now been cleared by the Presidency and “may return to the country at any moment and will be fully reintegrated after his clearance has been granted.”

PoliticsElectricity Customers To Get ₦20 Billion Meter Cost Refunds From DISCOs – NERC by adenigga(op): 2:41pm On Mar 04
The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has delivered a judgment in favour of consumers, ordering electricity distribution companies to refund a total of ₦20.33bn in outstanding meter costs.

The judgment contained in Order No: NERC/2026/025, which amends the previous 2023 order, was signed by the NERC Chairman, Musiliu Oseni, and the Commissioner, Legal, Licensing & Compliance at NERC, Dafe Akpeneye, on February 27, 2026.

According to the new order, DisCos are to recover and fully disburse the fund to affected customers over 12 months from March 1, 2026.

Under the Meter Asset Provider framework (MAP) scheme, customers pay for meters and are refunded by their DisCos through energy credits.

However, the commission noted that the level of refunds had been very slow over the years, necessitating a new order.

NERC stated that, as of December 31, 2025, DisCos had failed to reimburse customers for meters procured under the MAP framework, leaving an outstanding ₦20.33bn.

A combo of the Chief Executive Officer of the Association of Nigerian Electricity Distributors (ANED), Sunday Oduntan, and electricity installations.

The order is intended to prevent repeated delays in reimbursements, optimise customer notification, and strengthen sector credibility and confidence.

“In February 2026, the commission reviewed the level of compliance of DisCos with the expected reimbursement to customers who have paid for meters under the MAP framework.

According to the new order, DisCos have an outstanding amount of ₦20.33bn to reimburse customers for meters procured under the MAP framework as at 31 December 2025.

The electricity market regulator stated that all reimbursements to customers for meters procured under the MAP framework would be fully automated on customer accounts, saying, “DisCos shall ensure that the total cost of a MAP meter is recognised as credit on the customer’s account upon activation of the meter and disbursed automatically as monthly credits over the approved amortisation period.”

DisCos were also instructed that meter reimbursement credits cannot be offset against customer legacy debt.

“DisCos shall not offset meter reimbursement credits against customer legacy debts; the items must be treated separately,” the order stated.

For prepaid customers, DisCos must automatically generate monthly tokens representing the reimbursement, while for postpaid customers, the reimbursement must appear as a distinct credit on their bills.

NERC said, “For customers with prepaid meters, no later than the 4th day of every month, the DisCo’s billing system will automatically generate a token with an energy value equivalent to the monthly reimbursement which the customer is due to receive over the 120-month amortisation period based on the prevailing tariff for the customer.

“For post-paid customers, the monthly reimbursement of the cost of a MAP meter shall appear as a distinct credit line item which is expected to be subtracted from the customer’s total payable for the month.”

NERC also mandated monthly reporting and a dedicated complaints channel for affected customers.

“All DisCos shall file monthly reports with the Commission detailing the total monetary value of the reimbursement to customers through energy credit, in accordance with the template approved by the Commission.

“All DisCos shall establish a dedicated email address for the receipt of complaints from customers who have not received MAP meter cost reimbursements. Details of such complaints, including the status of their resolution, shall form part of the monthly compliance reports submitted to the commission,” it said.

Power Minister Adebayo Adelabu.

To recover the N20.33bn arrears, DisCos are to accelerate repayment over 12 months. The order noted that prepaid customers will receive two tokens per month, while postpaid customers will see two reimbursement line items on their bills.

“To recover the sum of N20.33bn that was not reimbursed to customers as at 31 December 2025, DisCos shall accelerate the rate of recovery for the affected customers over a 12-month period commencing from 1 March 2026,” the order added.

PoliticsDangote-Backed MRS Filling Stations Sell Fuel Higher Than NNPCL. by adenigga(op): 8:40am On Mar 04
Dangote Refinery-backed MRS filling station is dispensing Premium Motor Spirit at a higher price than Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited and other filling stations.

DAILY POST correspondent reports that MRS filling in Abuja increased its petrol price to N975 per liter, up from N875 in Abuja and environs.

This means the filling stations increased the fuel price by N100 per liter on Tuesday after the plant raised its gantry cost on Monday.

In comparison with NNPCL filling station petrol prices, MRS filling stations are N15 per liter more expensive than the state-owned firm’s outlets and other firms like Ranoil, AA Rano, and Sharon.

Speaking to DAILY POST in anonymity, a manager at MRS filling station said, “It’s because of the hike in gantry price by Dangote Refinery attributed to rising crude oil prices over the escalation of hostilities in the Middle East.”

DAILY POST reports that Brent and West Texas Intermediate crude blends rose to $80.75 and $73.78 per barrel, respectively, as of Tuesday evening.

Recall that NNPCL and other filling stations also increased fuel prices after Dangote Refinery’s gantry price increment.

DAIlLY POST reports that MRS filling station is owned by Idris Dantata, half-brother to Aliko Dangote, President of Dangote Refinery.

Check what's going on now, Venezuela - number one crude oil producer, their dictatorial president is in captive, US - ISREAL saga with IRAN currently is another pointer and they are members of OPEC.

Then our local production, can it sustain over 200 million population, juxtapose that with electricity bondage In Nigeria where we hardly generate enough powers to serve over 200 million population, it's only 5000 megawatts that's not consistent due to national grid break down today or tomorrow.

Mind you, Nigeria is supplying our neighbours - Republic of Benin, Togo etc! electricity which we must do because of the agreement signed by the government involved.

PoliticsICPC Recovers Wiretapping Equipment From El-rufai by adenigga(op): 4:42am On Mar 04
We got warrant to detain ex-governor for 14 days

He declined to cooperate with investigators

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) said it recovered equipment allegedly capable of tapping conversations and sensitive security documents from the Abuja home of former Governor Nasir el-Rufai.

The commission also said it obtained a legal order from a Magistrate Court in Bwari in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to detain el-Rufai for 14 days, which is due to expire on Thursday.

It denied allegations of arbitrary detention and repression of the former governor.

The commission has asked the High Court of Justice of the Federal Capital Territory to dismiss el-Rufai’s application alleging violation of his fundamental human rights.

ICPC said the former governor has corruption allegations to answer, including questions over the whereabouts of €1.4 million; 180 suspicious payments totalling N2,158,799,199 from a Consolidated Revenue Account linked to Kaduna State’s IGR account; and transfers to undisclosed accounts amounting to N428,122,180.18, among others.

The commission confirmed that an aide of the former governor, allegedly linked to the matter, has left the country.

ICPC made the claims in an affidavit deposed to by a Litigation Officer, David Efuk, before the High Court of Justice of the Federal Capital Territory, where el-Rufai is seeking redress and release from detention.

The commission said all the suspected items were retrieved in the presence of the former governor’s wife, Hadiza, and his son, Mohammed.

The agency also alleged that the former governor declined to cooperate with investigators, opting to remain silent until he is brought before a court.

It added that an aide of the former minister linked to the investigation had escaped from the country.

The anti-graft body made the claims in processes filed before the court, seeking the dismissal of the fundamental human rights enforcement suit.

ICPC said: “On the 18th day of February, 2026, at about 7 pm, the applicant was released to the DSS by the EFCC to be handed over to the commission.

“On the 19th day of February, 2026, the commission obtained a remand order to keep the applicant in its custody for 14 days, which will lapse on the 5th day of March, 2026.

“The commission has since confronted the applicant with the retrieved documents during its preliminary investigation activities, but the applicant has refused to respond to interviews to date.

“On the 19th day of February, 2026, the commission executed a duly signed search warrant on the premises of the applicant at No. 12 Mambila Street, Aso Drive, Asokoro District, Abuja.

“During the search, which was witnessed by the applicant’s wife, Hadiza Isma el-Rufai, and his son, Hon. Mohammed Bello el-Rufai, the commission retrieved sensitive security documents capable of compromising national security.

“The applicant, on national television (Arise Television), admitted to tapping telephone conversations of the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu.

“During the search operations, the commission retrieved electronic magnetic equipment allegedly capable of tapping conversations.

“He was asked to give consent to enable the commission access the equipment, but he refused. A copy of the consent form is attached and marked Exhibit ICPC 5.

“The search also retrieved sensitive security documents of various security agencies of the government.

“The applicant is also allegedly threatening likely prosecution witnesses, and one such witness has written to the commission seeking protection. A copy of the letter is attached and marked Exhibit ICPC 6.”

The ICPC insisted that el-Rufai was lawfully detained pursuant to a remand order issued by a Magistrate Court in Bwari, FCT.

It said the court granted the commission 14 days to keep him in custody to enable it conduct investigations.

It said: “Contrary to the depositions of the applicant in his supporting affidavit, he is lawfully held in the custody of the commission, and the commission has not breached any of his fundamental rights as claimed.

“ICPC does not arbitrarily arrest or detain suspects unlawfully, nor pose any physical danger to them.

“ICPC’s mandate is to investigate cases of corruption, abuse of office and related offences, and where there is prima facie evidence, prosecute alleged offenders.

“ICPC can only charge a person to court when investigations are concluded.

“Where investigation is ongoing, ICPC may request an alleged offender to report to its office daily until investigations are concluded or, where necessary, remand the alleged offender pending conclusion of investigations.

“ICPC undertakes to draw up charges against the applicant before the 5th of March, 2026, when the detention order will lapse.

“It is in the interest of justice to dismiss his application for lacking merit and allow the commission to investigate the allegations thoroughly in the public interest.”

ICPC said it followed due process in inviting el-Rufai based on a petition alleging corrupt practices.

It said: “The commission received a petition against the applicant, a former two-term Governor of Kaduna State.

“Thereafter, the commission began preliminary investigations into the allegations contained in the petition and retrieved relevant documents from banks and other government institutions.

“Upon conclusion of preliminary investigations, the commission made several efforts to invite the applicant to confront him with documents retrieved during the investigation.

“Every attempt to invite the applicant via formal letters proved abortive.

“On the 5th day of February, 2026, the commission received information about the applicant’s arrival at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.

“Operatives of the Department of State Services were contacted to assist in arresting him, but the attempt was unsuccessful.

“The commission later located the applicant’s residence at Aso Drive, Abuja, and formally served him with an invitation letter to appear before the commission on the 13th day of February, 2026, at 10am.

“The applicant, through his legal representatives, requested to honour the invitation on the 18th day of February, 2026.

“Before the agreed date, he had honoured an invitation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and was detained.

“He was later granted administrative bail but was unable to meet the conditions and remained in EFCC custody.”

The allegations

The petition against el-Rufai alleged:

Serious discrepancies in the state’s debt profile.

Cash withdrawals in foreign currency amounting to €1.4 million, with the purpose allegedly unclear.

Alleged diversion of public revenue by failure to remit funds into the TSA account.

Use of a debit card on a revenue bank account, with total transactions amounting to N721,672,854.88.

Alleged violation of Section 3.3.1 of Kaduna State Financial Policies and Procedures Manual 2016.

Diversion of funds to individuals and companies amounting to N393,752,670.05.

Transfers to undisclosed accounts totalling N428,122,180.18.

Suspicious payments (180) amounting to N2,158,799,199 from a Consolidated Revenue Account linked to Kaduna State IGR.

The petition further alleged: “The past administration collected about N98.912 billion as domestic loans for developmental projects in Kaduna State.

“The past administration also collected over $7,366,070,222.5 as foreign loans to be serviced by the people of Kaduna State.

“Our findings showed that while the Kaduna State Government between 2015 and 2023 embarked on ambitious projects, some were allegedly executed in contravention of procurement laws.

“It is alleged that only a few projects were completed, while several were abandoned despite full payment to contractors.

“Of concern was the alleged disregard for the Kaduna State Public Procurement Law, 2016.”

What el-Rufai said

In a statement on oath to the ICPC, el-Rufai said he was being persecuted as an opposition figure.

He stated that he would exercise his right to silence until arraigned before a court.

He said: “I am a leading member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), which I consider the only surviving opposition party in Nigeria, and that is the real reason I am being investigated.

“Regarding this question and any other questions, I have, on the advice of counsel, decided to exercise my right to silence.

“I believe that after nearly two years of intensive investigation, the ICPC should present its findings before a judicial tribunal and not to me.

“I will respond to any allegations only in a court of law. I do not believe these investigations amount to law enforcement.

“This is political persecution which only a judge can decide upon.”

PoliticsFuel Subsidy Removal: Criticism From Nigerians Was High Voltage – Tinubu by adenigga(op): 6:15pm On Mar 03
President Bola Tinubu has said the heat from critics agitating against the removal of fuel subsidy was “high voltage.”

Tinubu said despite the very high criticism from Nigerians, the country is better off with the fuel subsidy removal.

He spoke during the interfaith breaking of fast with members of the House of Representatives on Friday.

The president lamented that most Nigerians found it very difficult to understand the direction of his thinking regarding fuel subsidy removal and foreign exchange floatation.

He said: “It was initially very difficult at the beginning for people to realize the direction of my thinking but I’m glad that with the heat of the critics, none of you came to me to say can you reverse the removal of subsidy or can you change the foreign exchange floatation of naira? I am glad we are out of the dark tunnel.

“You collaborated and joined together as a team and gave me the inspiration to move on because the heat was high voltage from the critics but today we are better off for it.

“And if there is anything that you deserve, you deserve a second term subject to our party and your party.”
