Politics / Ndume Resumes Today As Legal Battle Continues by Adetoyipet: 4:20am On Nov 15, 2017
The Senate on Tuesday unanimously resolved to allow Senator Ali Ndume (Borno-South) to resume on Wednesday (today) from his six-month suspension by the chamber.

The Deputy President of the Senate, Ike Ekweremadu, who presided over the plenary on Tuesday, made the announcement after an executive (closed-door) session held by the lawmakers.

Ekweremadu said the lawmakers resolved at the closed-door session that the former Majority Leader be allowed to resume “without prejudice to the case pending in court.”

The Senate had on Monday appealed against a Federal High Court judgment on Friday, which nullified the suspension of the Borno-South senator.

The upper chamber of the National Assembly, which stated through its lawyer, Chief Mike Ozekhome (SAN), in a statement on Sunday, disclosed that it would also apply for stay of execution at the Court of Appeal.

The Senate had on March 29, 2017, suspended Ndume for six months for not “conducting due diligence” before filing a petition against the Senate President, Bukola Saraki; and the lawmaker representing Kogi West Senatorial District, Dino Melaye.

The FHC, however, voided the suspension in the judgment delivered on the suit marked FHC/ABJ/CS/551/2017, which Ndume filed to challenge his suspension for 90 legislative days.

Ndume had on Friday said he would not be surprised but disappointed if the Senate appealed against the judgment.

Ndume was suspended “for bringing Senator Dino Melaye, his colleague, and the institution of the Senate to unbearable disrepute.”

The Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions made the recommendation in its report, which was adopted by the lawmakers.

The panel had recommended that the lawmaker be suspended for one year but some senators pleaded that the punishment be reduced to six months, which was unanimously approved.

Ndume had on March 21, 2017, urged the Senate to investigate the allegation that an armoured Range Rover car reportedly worth N298m, but which the chamber later said cost $298,000, seized by Nigeria Customs Service and belonged to the President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki.

The lawmaker also called on the upper chamber of the National Assembly to investigate the certificate scandal involving Melaye.

He recalled that previous certificate scandals involving members of the National Assembly were probed by the lawmakers.

An online news portal, Sahara Reporters, which made the allegation in a report published on March 18, 2017, said the seizure of the Sports Utility Vehicle, allegedly belonging to Saraki, was the reason why the Senate was moving against the Controller General of the NCS, Col. Hammed Ali (retd.).

The medium reported that the car was intercepted and impounded on January 11, 2017, by the service for allegedly having fake documents.

Sahara Reporters had also in another report alleged that Melaye did not graduate from the Ahmadu Bello University Zaria, Kaduna State, but was parading a fake certificate.

Politics / Reps Debate Use Of Card Reader For 2019 Polls Wednesday by Adetoyipet: 4:10am On Nov 15, 2017
exclusivepp.com.ng

A fresh bill seeking legal backing for the use of card reader as a voting device has been slated for debate and possible passage for second reading this week by the House of Representatives.

The debate, which will start on Wednesday, is on a bill to amend the Electoral Act, 2010 to specify that card reader should be recognised as a voting device.

The bill is listed against a member from Kaduna State, Mr. Simon Arabo.

A copy of this week’s Notice Paper, which The PUNCH sighted in Abuja on Monday, gave the title of the bill as, “A bill for an Act to Amend the Electoral Act, 2010 to, among other things, make our electoral process more credible by making the use of card reader, the credible means of voter accreditation and voting and enhancing transparency and efficiency in the conduct of free, fair and credible elections; and for related matters.”

The card reader has generated controversies since it was tested during the 2015 general elections.

Most of those opposing the use of the card reader argued that it was not recognised by the Electoral Act.

Incidentally, the House had in May 2016 passed a similar bill for second reading and referred it to the Committee on Electoral Matters for further legislative action.

The committee, which is headed by a member of the All Progressives Congress from Gome State, Aisha Dukku, conducted a public hearing on the bill.

It is unclear whether the House will go ahead to hold a fresh debate on the new bill by Arabo on Wednesday or simply resolve that it should be dropped.

In 2016, the sponsor of the first bill and the Leader of the House, Mr. Femi Gbajabiamila, had told the House that since the Supreme Court had declared the card reader illegal due to non-inclusion in the Electoral Act, the law should be amended to cover card reader.

He had stated, “The card reader has proven in recent elections to check multiple voting and other irregularities. It should be part of the Act.”

However, there were suggestions by some members on the way out for future polls.

For instance, the Minority Leader of the House, Mr. Leo Ogor, told members that it was better to go all out for electronic voting as against limiting it to the card reader.

“The card reader too has shown that it is not perfect. So many eligible voters could not vote during the 2015 polls just for the fact that the card reader failed.

“If we allow a system that disenfranchises voters, it does not improve our electoral process. We are rather going backwards.

“We should go for electronic voting. People can vote any time at any point without necessarily crowding in one location,” Ogor added.

Crime / We Kidnap To Become Wealthy – Suspect by Adetoyipet: 5:13am On Nov 13, 2017
One of six suspected kidnappers, Abubakar Tambaya, who was paraded by the Kwara State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Lawan Ado, said he went into kidnapping with his gang to become wealthy.

He, however, claimed that he was co-opted by his accomplices into kidnapping.

The 29-year-old Oro-Ago, Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State indigene said he regretted his action.

The other suspects are Majuma Shehu, Mamman Lawal, Usman Umar, Babuga Umar and Abubakar Juli.

Tambaya said, “These people introduced me to it. They carried the Alhaji and took him into the bush. They said they would kill him if he did not give them money. I told them that they should not do that. We were looking for money. We wanted to be wealthy.”

The police boss said on November 7, at about 7am, the command received a report at the Ekiti Police Division that the victim, Usman Muhammadu, was missing.

He stated that the message was subsequently relayed to all police formations in the state.

He said, “While searching for the missing person, there was another report that Muhammadu was actually kidnapped by gunmen and the family had paid a ransom of N500,000 for his release.

“Immediately the information was received, detectives attached to the Ekiti division swung into action and arrested the suspects. During interrogation, they confessed to the crime and N361,150, being part of the ransom collected for the release of the victim, was recovered. The police also recovered two single-barrelled guns, seven cell phones and some charms from them.”

The CP also paraded eight other suspects, Qudus Alaya, Yusuf Olatunji, Salami Adesola, Sunday Oluwatobilola, Ridwan Musa, Sodiq Bakare, Quadri Adele and John-Paul Nditusi, for alleged criminal conspiracy, culpable homicide, belonging to cults and unlawful possession of firearms.

He said one single-barrelled locally-made gun, one double-barrelled locally-made gun and five live cartridges were recovered from the suspects.

Also paraded were one Emmanuel Daniel and Lucky Okwudegbo, who were said to have particpated in a robbery at Easy Kay Filling Station in the Saw-Mill area of Ilorin.

The police said four men, including Daniel and Okwudegbo, attacked and injured a security guard at the station, before stealing N35,500 and one Itel phone.

Ado also paraded one Idowu Jimoh for allegedly robbing one Mrs. Georgina Okoye of Gaa-Odota, Ilorin, of her Honda CRV.

Celebrities / YABATECH Graduate Abused For Damaging Car Commits Suicide by Adetoyipet: 5:03am On Nov 13, 2017
Barely two weeks to the commencement of his one year National Youth Service Scheme, a graduate of the Yaba College of Technology, Oluwamuyiwa Oluwagbemileke, aka Spartacus, has ended his life.

The 27-year-old graduate of electrical engineering reportedly took a poison on Wednesday after he was blamed for damaging a car in a sachet water factory in Ojodu Berger, Lagos, where he worked.

PUNCH Metro learnt that he had hit the vehicle on another one on the factory premises while trying to help the owner re-park it.

The Osogbo, Osun State indigene, was said to have become desperate to raise N50,000 to repair the damaged car.

In a suicide note he posted on Facebook, a few hours before the incident, he hinted that he was depressed.

He wrote, “When a man’s life is unstable, worried, downcast and destabilised, things he does right before will become wrong no matter the best he puts in. He loses focus and strength; he becomes unhappy and angry at everything even if he tries to wear a smiling face.

“Thoughts of death will come in the scene. He keeps asking the question, ‘why me?’ He becomes helpless and even if he’s among people, he still feels lonely. Life can be truly unfair.

“Advice: Never let your ugly situations weigh you down. When you notice things are not going well, check yourself before it makes you feel worried.”

About an hour before he took the poison, he wrote another note on his Facebook wall at 10.16pm, asking his family to look after his mother.

“Please, help me stand by my mother. She’s the reason why I have lived this far. Thank you. To my loved ones,” it read.

He was buried on Saturday at the Atan Cemetery in Yaba, Lagos.

His nickname, it was learnt, evolved from his determination to become a graduate, which made him to engage in one menial job or another to sponsor himself.

His elder sister, who spoke with our correspondent on the telephone on Sunday, confirmed that he was reserved.

The woman, who did not want her name in print, said Oluwagbemileke had called her on the telephone on that day around 11am, saying he was in Osogbo and wanted to discuss an issue with her.

She said, “I was monitoring him on the telephone and asking when he would come.

“I was surprised when he told me that he was on his way back to Lagos. I asked him what he came to do in Osogbo and he said I should not worry. He promised to call me back when he got to Ibadan, Oyo State. When I didn’t see his call, I called him and he said he had boarded a bus en route to Lagos. I asked him what happened. He said he would call me when he got home. I called him several times, but he said he was not at home, not knowing that he was lying. After he didn’t pick my calls again, I went to bed.”

The sister said she called him about 15 times the following day, but he did not pick his calls.

She said she later learnt that he had visited Osogbo to tell their mother about the damaged car, adding that the mother promised to follow him to the factory on Thursday.

She explained that their mother was preparing food for him when he left home, noting that the hard copy of the suicide note was found in his apartment at the factory in Lagos.

The sister said, “I passed out when I was told he poisoned himself. His neighbours said they received a message from him, saying he wanted to poison himself, but they did not take him seriously. His girlfriend said he was gasping when she called him around 11pm. Our mother said he typed the suicide note on his phone in her presence but she did not know the content because she has no formal education.

“I was surprised Muyiwa (Oluwagbemileke) could not wait to be celebrated. He struggled all through, but he never waited to reap the fruits of his labour. He worked as a carrier to survive. Our father died a long time ago. He was going for NYSC on November 21. He was the only graduate in our family.

“When I went to the factory, I was told that a laptop had fallen from his hands and damaged three days before he damaged the car. They must have chided him, which is normal, although his boss denied it. He was collecting over N50,000 monthly at the factory and a gym there.

“While he was living with me, if he spoilt something and I scolded him, he would abscond from home for three days and sleep in schools. At times, I would know he was the one who damaged an item, but I would still ask him. Instead of him to talk, he would just walk away from home. I would beg people to talk to him before he would return home.”

A friend of the deceased, Morountayo Akinyetun, condemned his decision, saying it betrayed his courage and hard work.

“I refuse to believe all that everyone is saying. Haha! You that always advised people to struggle. Ha! After all your up and down; the struggle from The Polytechnic, Ibadan, down to YABATECH. Why Spartacus? What message do you want to pass across to people?

“Your life affected people positively and that was why we gave you the nickname Spartacus. You didn’t care what life gave; you were a strong and courageous man….May God forgive you because what you have done is a great sin,” Akinyetun wrote on Facebook.

Another friend, with the alias Dolly Pee Pee, wrote, “Nigga, people call you Spartacus right from ND days at#the Polytechnic, Ibadan, because you were strong and courageous. What kind of silly thought came over you to commit suicide? I’m disappointed in you. Your decision weakened my day and everybody that knows you. Why didn’t you try and ask other people what they were going through maybe you could still give thanks to God for life? I’m sad and disappointed. You were a fake Spartacus.”

Martins Chika blamed Oluwagbemileke’s friends for not acting promptly after reading his post.

He said, “No one commented on this post until they heard he had died. If he had reasonable friends who know him too well, on seeing this post, they should have got in touch or go meet him to know what’s up. I am sure he would have shared his problems somehow with a close one.

“But these days, we are more busy chasing ghosts on the Internet than being friends to our friends. RIP, brother.”

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Olarinde Famous-Cole, confirmed the incident.

Politics / Herdsmen Crisis: Oyo, Ogun, Ondo, Four Others Move To Enact Anti-open Grazing La by Adetoyipet: 8:24am On Nov 11, 2017
After the passage of anti-open grazing laws in Ekiti and Benue states, other states like Ebonyi, Ondo, Abia, Imo and Ogun are moving to introduce similar laws to curb clashes between herdsmen and farmers within their respective boundaries.

Findings by Saturday PUNCH from the states showed that moves to introduce anti-open grazing laws were at various stages, with the bill having already passed second reading in Ogun State.

A 2015 Global Terrorism Index pushed Fulani militants to the fourth position on the list of deadliest militant groups in the world with a record killing of 1,229 people in 2014 alone. Similarly, a 2017 research by SBM Intelligence said the death toll from pastoral conflicts had been rising from 2015 and stood at nearly 5,000, “rivalling the killings by Boko Haram insurgents per year.”

The Ekiti State House of Assembly had in August 2016 passed a bill criminalising open grazing to law. The anti-open grazing law recently passed by the Benue State government took effect on November 1, 2017, leading to the mass movement of Fulani herdsmen and their cattle out of the state.

Similarly, the Ogun State House of Assembly currently has a bill before it on animal rearing and grazing, which has passed second reading.

“The bill will soon get to the committee stage,” the Chairman, House Committee on Information, Oludare Kadiri, disclosed this to one of our correspondents on Friday.

He said, “There is a bill before the house, which has passed the second reading. It is on animal rearing and grazing. When we resume from the oversight function tour, the bill will move to the committee stage.

“When it is finally ready, it will spell out the modalities for animal rearing and grazing. It will spell out where to go and where not to go. So, let us wait till the bill is finally passed into law.”

In Imo State, a similar bill is before the state House of Assembly. The Chief Press Secretary to the Speaker, Imo State House of Assembly, Mr. Marcel Ekwezuo, however, said he was not sure of the status of the bill.

He said, “I will check our records to find out its status at the legislature.”

On whether the state needed anti-open grazing law, Ekwezuo said “yes”.

“It was because the law is pertinent that the entire legislators of the South-South and South-East gathered at the hallowed chamber of the state House of Assembly to deliberate on it. Since that convergence, there has not been any clash between herdsmen and farmers in Imo State,” he added.

Meanwhile, the Oyo State Government said it was already proposing a similar bill that would address the attacks by suspected Fulani herdsmen on local farmers.

The Oke Ogun area of the state is home to some Fulani herdsmen who have frequently been accused of attacking farmers, raping their wives and daughters and destroying farmlands through grazing.

The state’s Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism, Mr. Toye Arulogun, said that although the state government had established some committees to resolve disputes between farmers and herdsmen, an executive bill would soon be sent to the state House of Assembly to check the activities of the latter.

Arulogun said, “The issue of herdsmen attacks on farmers and communities is a national issue. We have pockets of such problem in Oke Ogun area of Oyo State.

“I can confirm to you that there is an executive bill that will soon be transmitted to the state House of Assembly. This will address the frequent clashes between farmers and herdsmen in the state.”

Likewise, the Ondo State Government said it had begun the process of making anti-open grazing law to reduce the incessant attacks of suspected herdsmen on the farmers in the state.

The state Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Mr. Yemi Olowolabi, said the governor, Mr. Rotimi Akeredolu, would be sending a bill on anti-open grazing to the House of Assembly to pass into law.

He said, “We already have an anti-open grazing bill going to the House, and we will be awaiting the passage of the bill. The content of the bill is about how to prevent open grazing.”

In the same vein, the Assembly said it was in support of such a law, saying any time the bill reached the Assembly, it would be passed.

The Chairman, House Committee on Information, Mr. Olamide George, said there was widespread agitation for a solution to herdsmen and farmers’ clashes in the state.

“Currently, the House has not had any bill on that subject matter but we know there are agitations everywhere and the agitation is increasing. By the

grace of God, when a matter is of urgent public importance, the Assembly will definitely support the bill.

“We can’t continue to fold our arms and allow our farm produce to be wasted; people can’t be working day and night to make ends meet and ordinary animals would go and destroy their farms. We won’t accept that again in Ondo State. We will definitely give our support to the bill.”

In Ebonyi State, Emmanuel Uzor, the Chief Press Secretary to Governor David Umahi, also said that the state government was contemplating presenting an anti-open grazing bill to the House of Assembly for passage into law, especially as neighbouring Benue State had done so.

He said, “We are contemplating sending anti-open grazing bill to the House of Assembly. The close proximity of Ebonyi and Benue states is such that it is possible that when the herdsmen move away from there because of its new law, they will move their cattle into Ebonyi. To protect our people, we are contemplating having a similar law in the state.

“The process is almost completed; if the law was able to stem the frequent clashes in Ekiti and Benue, it would stop it anywhere and end all these frequent clashes.”

The Deputy Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, Chief Cosmos Ndukwe, said the state lawmakers were currently working on a bill that would ban open grazing to protect farmers and farmlands.

He said, “The state has called for a lot of meetings between farmers, herdsmen, community leaders and the police. In such meetings, we have discussed issues that seek to create synergy between herdsmen and farmers.

“But the irony is that the cattle owners always insist that the attacks in some communities are not to their knowledge. They claim that some of the owners of the cattle are not known by them. The Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria will always tell us that some of the herdsmen were hired by independent cattle owners to work for them.

“But in the House of Assembly, we are trying to enact a law on grazing that will see to it that cattle are no longer seen on our streets, so when the herdsmen come into the state, they will stay in a particular area mapped out for them.”

There are strong indications that the Cross River State House of Assembly is also considering passing the anti-open grazing law.

A member representing Obudu constituency in the House of Assembly, Mr. Steve Ukpukpen, said the effect of the law passed by Benue was already taking its toll on Cross River State.

He said, “We are considering passing that anti-open grazing law too and it will happen within the shortest possible time because the casualties are despicable. The law will help stem the clash. It has made an impact in Benue State and the herdsmen are beginning to look for where to take refuge. A law like this will chase them out of Cross River State.”

The state governor, Prof. Ben Ayade, has also lamented that his state was already feeling the spillover effect of the law recently passed by the Benue State Government.

Chief Press Secretary to Governor Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa State, Mr. Francis Ottah-Agbo, said the state government had been able to confine activities of herdsmen to a grazing area earmarked for them in the state, and that the move had worked so far.

Meanwhile, Osun, Katsina, Bauchi, and Kwara State governments said they were not considering introducing anti-open grazing law.

When contacted, the Chairman, House Committee on Information, Niger State House of Assembly, Shusibu Iya, said he could not discuss the matter on the telephone.

But the state’s Director-General, Nomadic Affairs, Abdullahi Babayo, said the government had established a peaceful coexistence between farmers and herdsmen.

Career / NLC, NUT Accuse El-rufai Of Plotting To Sack 21,000 Teachers, Others by Adetoyipet: 4:49am On Nov 11, 2017
The Nigeria Labour Congress has accused Kaduna State Governor, Nasir el-Rufai, of planning to sack 30,000 workers including teachers, local government workers and other ministry employees.

It said the move would deepen poverty in the state, noting that the objective of the government was to reduce the state’s workforce.

Also, the Nigeria Union of Teachers, through its President, Michael Olukoya, condemned the decision of the governor to sack about 21,000 teachers from its employment over “alleged unstructured” competency test that it described as lacking legal process.

The NLC President, Ayuba Wabba, who addressed a news conference on Friday in Abuja faulted the reported mass failure of Kaduna primary school teachers, describing it as false and fraudulent.

He said, “The state government has earmarked about 30,000 workers to be laid off, consisting of 21, 780 teachers already penned down to be sacked under the pretext that they failed a competency test while 5,000 local government workers are to be sacked under the Local Government Councils Restructuring Order 2017 and 8,000 more workers in ministries, departments and agencies are to be sacked for sundry but unjustifiable reasons.”

He stated that the competency test was a sham and a pre-meditated action to reduce the workforce, noting that professional bodies like Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria and the National Teachers Institute were not involved in the process.

The NLC said the NUT and the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees were equally left out because the motives were clearly not about testing for quality but a ploy to throw people out of employment.

It contended that principles of collective bargaining in labour relations as enshrined in the nation’s labour laws and conventions of the International Labour Organisation were not followed.

Wabba also dismissed allegations that the workers vandalised the Kaduna State House of Assembly during their protest on Wednesday, adding that the state government sponsored thugs who vandalised the assembly after the protesting workers had left the complex.

The protest by workers to the Assembly, he explained, was in the full glare of journalists, adding that security agencies were also on hand to ensure law and order.

He accused the governor of making false claims in his quest to impose hardship on the people, especially workers.

“We assure all workers in the employment of the Kaduna State Government of our full resolve and commitment to continue to support them against any infringement on their rights as we will mobilise fully against any attempt to implement the intention to sack any worker without following due process,” the labour chief stated.

Meanwhile, the NUT President, while addressing journalists at the end of the National Executive Council meeting of the union in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, also said the union would mobilise teachers across the country against any attempt to sack the teachers based on “any illegal process.”

He said, “When last did Kaduna State Government organise any workshop, seminars for teachers in the state, when did the government organise training and retraining for teachers? We hereby advice Kaduna State Government to focus on organising the necessary training and retraining of teachers through the relevant training facilities to improve the quality of teachers..”

Olukoya said the union has issued a two-month ultimatum to states owing teachers salaries and pensions, threatening to shut down schools in the affected states by January 2018.

Speaking against the backdrop of granting autonomy to local governments in the country, he said the management and funding of primary education, including payment of teachers salaries, should be transferred to state governments if the autonomy is to be granted to the local governments.

Politics / Justice Ngwuta Said Cash Found On Him Was Proceeds From His Trade, Witness Tells by Adetoyipet: 4:28am On Nov 11, 2017
A prosecution witness in the trial of Justice Sylvester Ngwuta of the Supreme Court said yesterday that the judge claimed that the huge cash, including foreign currencies, recovered from his Abuja home in 2016 was proceeds of his trade in palm oil, rice and foreign exchange.

Operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) raided Justice Ngwuta’s Abuja official residence in October 2016 along with some other judges.

The DS later claimed to have recovered bags packed with cash, including foreign currencies (all estimated at N36million), in the judge’s house while executing a search warrant.

An operative of the DSS, Aminu Ibrahim Ndakpoto, told a Federal High Court in Abuja yesterday that Justice Nquta told his interrogators that the huge cash recovered in his house was from his unspent medical allowances and his trade in palm oil, rice and foreign exchange.

Ndakpoto spoke while testifying as the 6th prosecution witness in Justice Ngwuta’s trial before Justice John Tsoho of the Federal High Court, Abuja.

Justice Ngwuta is being tried on a 13-count charge of money laundering and unlawful possession of multiple passports.

Led in evidence by lead prosecuting lawyer, Mrs. Olufemi Fatunde, Ndakpoto said he was on the team that interrogated Justice Ngwuta from October 9, 2016. He gave the name of his colleague on the team as Mike.

The witness said Justice Ngwuta was in possession of multiple international passports, which he allegedly used interchangeably.

Ndakpoto said the judge changed his earlier claim in relation to how he came about the money the next day (October 10, 2016).

He said the judge subsequently denied knowledge of the money, allegedly claiming that although he owned the bags in which the money was found, he did not know how the DSS operatives came about the money.

The witness said: “I began the conversation with him on the items contained in the search warrant.

“The first thing that caught my attention was the cash listed on the search warrant.

“He (the judge) said the naira in the money was the accumulation of the monthly allowances paid to him in cash by the Supreme Court, and that what formed part of the money are proceeds of his trading in agricultural products. He said he trades in palm oil and rice.

“And that the foreign currency, dollars, is from his trade in foreign exchange. The defendant said he usually buys dollars when the rates are low and that he sells when the rates are high,” he said.

Ndakpoto said the judge also told him that part of the foreign currency is from his accumulated annual medical allowances paid to him in foreign currency by the Supreme Court.

He said the judge told him that since he had not been sick, he had no reason to spend the money, which informed why the money had accumulated.

The witness said when he asked the judge how he does his trade in agricultural produce, the defendant said he goes to the market to buy the items.

On who his partners and customers are, and where his warehouse is, the witness said Justice Ngwuta said he does not have a particular customer, but just buys from the open market.

The witness said the judge also told him that he does not have a partner. And that he has neither a warehouse or store.

Ndakpoto said when he asked the judge how he sources for the foreign currencies , he said he goes to mallams, where they trade in foreign currencies and buys and sells in the open market when he wants to sell.

The witness said everything the defendant said was recorded and could be played at anytime, by anyone who doubts his evidence.

The witness said: “When I asked him which bank account he operates, he said he only banks with Union Bank.

“On that day, there was no written statement by the defendant that I witnessed, that was on Sunday, October 9, 2016.

“Before he came to our office, there was news everywhere about the arrest of judges and that the defendant travelled to the UAE and some others to collect bribe to influence the case he was handling.

“When he came back the second day, I went to meet him at the waiting area. When we were coming down to my office, the defendant asked that we did not ask him about the money they said they found in his house.

“My colleague, Mike, reminded him that he had explained the previous day that the money was from his accumulated allowance, trades in foreign exchange and farm produce,” he said.

The witness said at a point, he asked the judge to narrate to them how the search of his house by our colleagues went.

He said the judge told him that contrary to what he had told them the previous day, “he was feeling feverish when our operatives came into his house. And that he was sitting down, that it was the operatives who searched the house without him following them around.

“He also said that he does not know how they came about the money. We asked him who owns the bags that contain the money, he said the bags are his own, but the money inside is not his own,” he said.

The witness said on the third day, October 11, they demanded for the judge’s international passports and that he brought multiple passports, including diplomatic and standard Nigerian international passports.

He said at a point they again asked the judge if he visited the United Arab Emirate (UAE), but that the judge insisted he was never in the UAE.

The witness added: “We then told him that there was proof from entries in his passports that he travelled to UAE.

“He then said he needed his lawyer before he could say anything else.

“We put it to him that he presented the passport he claimed was lost to the UAE Immigration Authority, but while leaving Nigeria, he presented a different passport,” he said.

The witness said the judge later returned with his lawyer, Paulinus Igwe.

At a point, Ngakpoto later asked for time to enable him pray. The judge consequently adjourned to January 10 next year for the witness to resume his testimony.

Culture / Ibadan 21 Obas: Olubadan ‘ll Reconcile With Ajimobi, Says Oluwo by Adetoyipet: 3:40am On Nov 09, 2017
The Oluwo of Iwo in Oyo State, Oba Abdurasheed Akanbi, has said the rift between Governor Abiola Ajimobi and the Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Saliu Adetunji will soon be resolved.

The governor and the frontline monarch have been at loggerheads over government’s review of the 1959 Olubadan Chieftaincy law.

The review resulted in the promotion of the members of the Olubadan-in-Council and 21 baales (village heads) to beaded crown-wearing obas (kings).

Oba Akanbi spoke in Ibadan, the state capital, after a meeting with Ajimobi.

The monarch said the Olubadan would soon align with the governor on the intents behind the Olubadan Declaration review.

The Oluwo had visited Oba Adetunji at his Popoyemoja palace on September 10.

The Olubadan, in a suit filed at the State High Court in Ibadan, sued Ajimobi, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, the Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice and the 21 newly crowned obas over the amendment of the 1959 Olubadan Chieftaincy Declaration and subsequent coronation of the obas on August 27.

Speaking at Governor’s office after the meeting, Oba Akanbi said the progress on resolving the impasse showed Ajimobi’s commitment not to use his constitutional executive power on the matter.

The monarch also said his pronouncements that the Olubadan remained his father, coupled with the respect the two parties have shown each other indicated that the rift would soon be settled.

He added that Ajimobi had shown respect for the traditional institution, the desire for peace and progress of Ibadan with similar commitment to peace in his conversation with the Olubadan.

Oba Akanbi said: “I came to thank the governor for being peaceful, despite the impasse with the Olubadan. I have spoken with Baba, the Olubadan, previously, as well as last night. I have come to do same with the governor.

“This is because Iwo is the closest town to Ibadan, and the Oluwo is the closest first-class monarch to the Olubadan. So, what concerns Ibadan should concern Iwo. We have come to look for a way to resolve the issue. The governor has stayed with the peaceful side to resolve the issue. That is a good move.

“The governor respects the traditional institution a lot and he respects the Olubadan a lot. The governor has the law and executive order; he keeps referring to the Olubadan as his father.

“Definitely, the Olubadan will come to terms with the governor. We are working towards that. That is why I came here from Iwo, for peace. The governor has demonstrated that.”

Crime / SARS Kill Seven Robbers, Kidnappers In Imo, C’river by Adetoyipet: 3:28am On Nov 09, 2017
The Imo and Cross River states commands of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad on Wednesday killed seven suspected armed robbers and kidnappers. While two robbers were killed by the Imo SARS, five alleged kidnappers were killed by their counterparts in Cross River.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the armed robbers met their Waterloo while exchanging gunfire with the Imo SARS operatives during a robbery.

The incident, our correspondent gathered, occurred around 2am in Ezi-Ogbaku, in the Mbaitoli Local Government Area of the state.

A police source said the SARS commander, Victor Godfrey, mobilised his men to the scene of the crime in the wee hours of the night.

Addressing journalists shortly after the corpses of the slain robbers were conveyed to the state police headquarters in Owerri, the state capital, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Andrew Enwerem, said three of the five-man gang fled with gunshot injuries.

He said the robbers, who were moving from house to house to rob, had opened fire on sighting policemen who responded to a distress call.

The police spokesperson said in the ensuing gun battle, two of the hoodlums were gunned down, while three others escaped.

He said, “In the early hours of Wednesday, the operatives of the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad of the Imo State Police Command received a distress call that armed robbers were operating at Ezi-Ogbaku. SARS, in conjunction with the Police Mobile Force officers, responded to the emergency around 2am.

“The teams encountered the five armed robbers, who opened fire on the policemen. The officers responded, which led to the death of two of the hoodlums, while three fled with gunshot injuries.”

Enwerem, who noted that the identities of the slain robbers had yet to be ascertained, said the state Commissioner of Police, Chris Ezike, had directed heads of tactical units of the command to apprehend the fleeing criminals.

Exhibits recovered from the slain suspects, according to the police, included one locally-made double-barrelled shotgun, two expended cartridges, and two live cartridges.

In the Cross River State incident, the five suspected kidnappers were shot dead during the rescue of a victim in Ikom, Ikom Local Government Area of the state.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Irene Ugbo, confirmed the incident in Calabar.

She said the suspected kidnappers had abducted a woman, following which the policemen trailed the kidnappers.

Ugbo explained that the police had been on the trail of the kidnappers for four days before the breakthrough.

She said men of the SARS unit, on gathering intelligence, traced the kidnappers to their hideout in a bush, where the gun battle occurred.

The police spokesperson said, “Our men had an encounter with some kidnappers in the Ikom Local Government Area while trying to rescue an abducted woman from their captivity.

“In the process of rescuing the victim, the kidnappers engaged our men in an exchange of gunfire. We were able to rescue the woman, while five of the kidnappers were gunned down.

“We also arrested two of the kidnappers and our men are bringing them down to Calabar as we speak.”

She urged members of the public to avail the command of timely and useful information that could lead to the arrest of suspected criminals.

Politics / Govt Suspends VP, Withholds Salary For Impregnating 16-year-old Pupil by Adetoyipet: 3:19am On Nov 09, 2017
The Niger State Ministry of Education has ordered the Vice Principal of Government Day Secondary School, Tunga, Niger State, Mohammed Mohammed, who impregnated his 16-year-old pupil, Faith Galadima, to take care of her and her baby for three years.

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, Yahaya Garba, on Wednesday said the accused had not been promoted or transferred by the ministry, adding that the ministry was not shielding him from prosecution.

Garba noted that Mohammed had been suspended from the school, while 50 per cent of his salary was being withheld pending the outcome of the case in court.

He said, “As a ministry, we did not want to make any public announcement of our stand, but because the issue has gone viral, we have to come out to state our stand. I will like to say that the Niger State Ministry of Education is not in any way shielding Mallam Mohammed. When the case got to us, we directed the state secondary education board to set up a seven-man committee.

“Based on the recommendation of the committee and the acceptance by Mohammed that he committed the crime, the Ministry of Education has placed him on half salary.

“We have also mandated Mohammed to take up the upkeep of both mother and child for three years. Mohammed has not been promoted or posted anywhere. He is still serving his suspension. The ministry will finally decide on his case after the court has concluded deliberation on it.”

The permanent secretary further stated that the willingness of the ministry to pay the money needed to carry out the DNA test was to expedite the case in court.

Our correspondent had reported that Galadima was impregnated by her vice principal and her family had cried out for assistance from the state government after she gave birth, as they alleged that the accused had abandoned them.

The victim and her family had claimed that the vice principal had fled and his whereabouts unknown.

Celebrities / Jim Iyke Found Guilty In N15.7 Million Debt And Here’s His Judgement by Adetoyipet: 3:49pm On Nov 06, 2017
Jim Iyke Found Guilty In N15.7 Million Debt

There seems to be an update on case between Jim Iyke and Nigerian socialite, Hajiya Habiba who reportedly accused the Nigerian actor of allegedly defrauding her of over N15million.

According to online reports, after allegedly dodging the court for 5 years, Jim Iyke has been found guilty N15.7 million fraud and has been ordered to repay the money to Habiba.

Here is the judgement delivered by a sitting court in Abuja on October 19th;

Let’s take you back and refresh your memories on this story/case.

In an interview with NigerianFilms on how she met Jim Iyke and what really happened, Habiba had this to say;

HOW DID YOU MEET JIM IYKE?

HABIBA: You see I don’t know any Jim Iyke before I met him in farmers market with two of his friends Victor and Solomon. They asked for my number which I didn’t know off head, as I just returned from UK and got the sim card. So I said I don’t know my number before anything Jim grab my hand set from my hand and dallied his number from mine, that was the beginning of the night mare.

Before you know it he in a month he has bombarded me with his family members mom, dad, sisters, his girlfriend then Ketura Hamilton and told me she was pregnant for him but they lost the baby in July 2011. Well with such development you will think he is honourable because for me to show you my family we must be real friends and there is someone in a month or two was able to do that, awesome!! From there I don’t doubt his honesty and integrity didn’t know there was so much to all he was doing.

That was just being smart, for me to be comfortable with him. When the mum came she hardly could work, so I decided to get her checked , he said she had a doctor in Garki hospital but does know all the drugs she has been given don’t work and I flew her to the UK thinking she is my mother too and OLD. Where she told me her full life story which I have on video.

After the trip he brought a business proposal with his friend Solo which I invested in 16.5mill, after all I never will think he will have another motive. But that was the beginning of the saga. After collecting the money he disappeared and asked his family never to answer my calls how do I get him as he too doesn’t pick my calls. Fortunately his elder sister who leaves in Gwagwalada I once visited her ( NKIRU) so I remembered and went to her so she called him, and arranged a meeting where we fought. And I got him locked up for 3 good days at SAS without bail, that was the best I did to myself to show him my worth not celebrity but MONEY. It was the best time of my life.

Celebrities / DJ Cuppy Has This To Say About Davido Calling Himself ‘OBO’ by Adetoyipet: 3:42pm On Nov 06, 2017
Even though she just said there were times she wished been born poor, You can’t remove the fact that DJ Cuppy is billionaire, Femi Otedola’s daughter.

The 24 year old in an Interview with Goldmyne TV has revealed how she used to feel uncomfortable telling people she’s a daughter of Femi Otedola.

Here are the excerpts:

“In my song with Tekno, Green Light, I tried to be more open. Looking back at my upbringing, I grew up with a lot of borders. I love meeting people, I love having fun with people, but I didn’t grow up doing that all the time. But I am an adult now and I can choose my own. So, I am choosing to be open.

Although, I am so grateful to God for my upbringing, as my parents took good care of me and gave me the best education. But I miss some things. People tell me that they once did certain things, which were fun. For instance, they once took a bus and go to someplace alone. Someone had also told me that they once went to the field and stole corns. You may think all these don’t matter, but I don’t have those memories.”

Have you ever wished you were not Otedola’s child? She replied;

“That was back in the day, but I am now very comfortable with my skin. In the beginning, when I first entered the industry, I felt a lot of artistes or industry people didn’t like me.
I thought they felt I was entering their space with an advantage over them and thought it was unfair. But now, I feel like I have paid my dues and I have built a good reputation over time for myself.
Now, I am happy to say who my dad is and I cannot change it. I have embraced it and I see it as a blessing now. People have to understand I just wanted to be someone’s child, so; they shouldn’t use that against me. I could walk into a room and, before even opening my mouth, everyone had formed an opinion about me. It is like you don’t want to give a young woman a chance to express herself.”

Speaking on the difference between her and Davido, she said he singer decided to use his upbringing to his advantage from the outset.

“He told everyone he was OBO (Omo Baba Olowo); take it or leave it. I am not that kind of person, but he was smarter because before you could use that against him, he had already told you.”

i know how it is when you see nothing working for you.
i am in that kind of situation presently, what only comes to mind is "death"
but i choose to believe that death won't solve anything rather it would also cause another grave sadness and heartbreaking situation among your family.

no body has been sucessfull without touring the path of challenges. all you need as a depressed individual is prayer, hope and patience. believe it that there must be a light after that tunnel(problem) you are passing through.

if i tell you my own ordeal i am facing now, you will forget yourself and start havin sympathy for me.

just do as possible positive things you can do, leave the rest to God and have patience.
