Ghanaian footballer Bernard Morrison, who plays for Orlando Pirates, has been arrested in South Africa for being in possession of a stolen car and he is facing charges of robbery. The attacking winger, who plays for PSL giants Orlando Pirates, was reportedly arrested on Tuesday morning by the ruthless police in the country. The Fast and the Furious 8 has raced to the top of the box office chart breaking an international record in the process. The eighth film in the action thriller franchise took an estimated $532.5m (£424.7m) globally over Easter weekend. The figure makes it the strongest worldwide debut ever slightly overtaking the $529m (£421.8m) taken by Star Wars: The Force Awakens. However, the film’s US takings were down sharply in the previous movie. A second-year student of Yefriman Senior High School at Yefri in Nkoranza North in the Brong Ahafo Region, Fabea Nyarko Leticia has died after allegedly drinking tinned malt drink that was offered her by her high school boyfriend. Initial investigations by the police discovered that the drink contained material suspected to be a drug for abortion. Jennifer Adoma, a classmate of the deceased verified the suspicion of the police. She revealed that her friend was pregnant and took the drink given to her by her boyfriend to terminate the pregnancy. They were dating. The girl was pregnant. They arranged that he will give her medicine to drink. But, after the church program, they bought food and drinks. He gave out the medicine to the girl to drink, she added. Minutes after drinking the malt, Jennifer said her friend who was in her boyfriend’s room started complaining of sharp stomach pains and was rushed to the hospital. She was however pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital Grandmother of the deceased narrating the incident to said Fabea informed her about attending a program at church on Wednesday evening. But she noted that, later in the evening she received a strange phone call informing her that her granddaughter was in critical condition. She rushed to the hospital only to be told her granddaughter was dead. The Nkoranza District Police Commander, ASP Ambrose Agyemang confirmed this unfortunate incident. He indicated that investigations were ongoing to determine the cause of the death and entreated persons in the neighborhood to support with investigation to enhance their investigations. We are looking at the information that has been reported to us. That is the basis of our investigation, any information available is also welcomed to make the work easier ASP Agyeman stated. This notwithstanding, Mary Adubea, the mother of the deceased said she believes her daughter may have been a victim of poisoning by her boyfriend and she hopes the police gets to the bottom of the matter. Zimbabwe’s High Court has banned physical punishment for children both at school and in the home. The ruling comes after a parent complained that her child in grade one, a class for six-year-olds, had deep bruises after a beating by a teacher. Linah Pfungwa said her daughter had been punished for failing to have her reading book signed by guardians as proof she had done her homework. The constitutional court will have to confirm the judgment. The BBC’s Shingai Nyoka in the capital, Harare, says if upheld, it would transform the way parents have disciplined their children for centuries in the southern African country. Some parents are criticizing the ruling, while rights groups says it is long overdue, she says. Ms Pfungwa, who filed her application with support from the Justice for Children’s Trust, said her child was harshly assaulted with a rubber pipe. My child suffered major bruises and I took photographs and pictures She had deep bruises on her back and she could hardly sleep properly, the state-run Chronicle newspaper quotes her as saying. I posted the pictures of my daughter on our WhatsApp group for other parents to observe and it turned out that other children had also been beaten. In her application, Ms Pfungwa said that children should not be subjected to any form of violence and such physical punishment breached their rights under Zimbabwe’s Constitution. She argued that other forms of discipline should be used for children. If my child disobeys, I ground her by denying her access to television as well as denying her pocket money or other goodies like sweets and presents, she said. If she does well, I reward her by presents or extra hours of watching television. My child is well-behaved and well-brought up simply as a result of the dialogue that I use as a means of discipline. Justice David Mangota agreed that physical punishment for children was unconstitutional and said that parents and teachers should not lay their hands on children even if they misbehave. |
