JAMB has sent the guidelines institutions are to follow for the conduct of the 2020/2021 admission process. The JAMB Registrar, Ishaq Oloyede warned the heads of institutions against flouting the guidelines and decisions established at the 2020 Policy meeting that was held on June 16th, 2020

According to JAMB, admission for first and second choice are to begin August 21st, 2020. He however, stated the deadline will be determined by the Federal Ministry of Education and communicated to all the institutions as the uncertainties of COVID 19 makes it impossible to fix a specific deadline at this time.



Oloyede advised all heads of institutions and admission officers to carefully study and understand the content of the document with a view to implementing it fully for a seamless and transparent admission exercise. He added that all admissions must be carried out in an honest and transparent manner.

JAMB tasked the three higher education regulatory bodies – The National Universities Commission (NUC), the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) and the National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE ) – to collaborate with it to ensure full compliance with the guidelines.

He stated that as usual, the admission-exercise for the 2020/2021 Academic Session would be conducted on the Central Admission Processing System (CAPS).

The board reminded institutions and the public that all forms of illegal and irregular admission has stopped as all admission into Full Time, Distance Learning, Part-Time, Sandwich, must be processed only through the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB).

The board, therefore, warned institutions involved in advertising or selling application forms for admissions into the programmes outside JAMB to stop henceforth.

Oloyede equally stated that no institution will be allowed to recommend or admit any candidate whose UTME score is below the following threshold: Degree — 160; ND — 120; NCE — 100; NID — 100. in addition, no institution can graduate a candidate who has not been a full time student of that institution for at least 2 consecutive years and Affiliated institutions are to adopt the same minimum UTME scores as the mother institutions

The Senate has passed a bill to upgrade Auchi Polytechnic to University and two other tertiary institutions in the country

THE Senate Wednesday passed a bill seeking to establish the City University of Technology, Auchi, Edo State. The Bill for the Establishment of the University which is to upgrade the Federal Polytechnic, Auchi to City University of Technology, Auchi to facilitate more access to quality higher technical education.

Also yesterday, the Senate passed the bill for the establishment of Nigeria Maritime University, Okerenkoko in Delta State and Federal College of Education, Giwa, Kaduna State.



The three bills were passed by the Red Chamber following a clause-by-clause consideration of the report of the Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFUND.

The reports on the bills were presented by the Chairman of the Committee, Senator Babba Kaita.

Senator James Manager sponsored the bill on the Nigeria Maritime University, while Senator Francis Alimikhena, sponsored that of the University of Technology, Auchi.

Senator Uba Sani sponsored the bill for the establishment of the Federal College of Education, Giwa, in Kaduna State.

While presenting the report, Kaita said that the Federal Polytechnic Auchi was currently running degree programmes in affiliation with Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra with enrollment of over 50, 000 students on full and part-time.

14 years jail term for offenders: The Senate on Tuesday passed the bill on sexual harassment of female students in the nation’s tertiary institutions. Actions such as whistling, sexual compliments and winking at a lady are now offences

The bill titled: ‘A Bill for an Act to prevent, prohibit and redress Sexual Harassment of students in tertiary educational institutions and for matters concerned therewith, 2019’, was sponsored by the Deputy Senate President,. Ovie Omo-Agege, and 106 other senators.

The bill, which was read the third time and passed, was a sequel to the consideration of the report of the Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters presented by the committee’s Chairman, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele (APC, Ekiti Central).



The bill, with 25 clauses, seeks to promote and protect ethical standards in tertiary institutions. It also seeks to protect students against sexual harassment as well as prevent sexual harassment of students by educators in tertiary institutions.

The bill also proposes up to 14 years jail term for offenders.

The bill defines sexual offences as including sexual intercourse with a student or demands for sex from a student or a prospective student or intimidating or creating a hostile or offensive environment for the student by soliciting for sex or making sexual advances.

Other forms of sexual harassment identified in the bill are grabbing, hugging, kissing, rubbing, stroking, touching, pinching the breasts or hair or lips or hips or buttocks or any other sensual part of the body of a student; or sending by hand or courier or electronic or any other means naked or sexually explicit pictures or videos or sex related objects to a student, and whistling or winking at a student or screaming, exclaiming, joking or making sexually complimentary or uncomplimentary remarks about a student’s physique or stalking a student.

The Senate in a statement on Wednesday said the bill had been sent to Nigeria’s lower house for deliberation. Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari would also have to consent to the bill for it to become a law.
