The Late Akẹsin of Ora-Igbomina Ọba, Professor Olóládé Foláyan, ascended the throne in 1990 after already attaining the rank of Professor of biochemistry in the Nigerian university system. Based on available public records and documented timelines of Nigerian traditional rulers who were university professors, he is widely regarded as Nigeria’s first professor to become a reigning traditional king, preceding other known professor-kings such as the Asagba of Asaba, who ascended the throne in 1991.
