In furtherance of its Urban Renewal drive and upgrade of infrastructure in Enugu State, the administration of Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi has approved the immediate rehabilitation of 233 bus-stop shelters and road hand rails in Enugu metropolis, starting from the dual carriageway along 82 Division, Nigerian Army, Enugu to Akwata Pedestrian Bridge by Ogbete Main Market.

Addressing newsmen after the meeting of the State Executive Council (EXCO), the Commissioner for Enugu Capital Territory Development Authority, Barr. Chidi Aroh stated that the state government also approved the construction of new bus-stop shelters in all the newly constructed roads in the state capital and the relocation of five “critical” bus-stops that usually cause obstruction of traffic, such as the one located at the popular Agric Bank junction, Independence Layout, Enugu.

Barr. Aroh said that the decisions were reached after the Council considered the recommendations of the team of technical experts constituted to review the state of the infrastructure and how they can be enhanced and beautified to improve the status of Enugu as the historical capital of the South East geo-political zone.

The Commissioner disclosed that the Council directed that the relocation exercise be carried out within five days, while the rehabilitation should be completed in six weeks “in line with government determination to always deliver on its promises to the people as quickly as it should be”.

He said: “On this, the Capital Territory Development Authority has been given the go ahead to execute the projects and I can assure you that as usual, we will progress on these projects. We count on you as vital partners to report the progress as we go on”.

Also speaking, the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Fintan Ekochin told newsmen that the Council approved the establishment of a Management Team for the new Enugu State Medical Diagnostic Centre, which is on the verge of commencement of services that would comprise reputable national and international health institutions or organizations for the day-to-day running of the outfit.

Dr. Ekochin explained that the decision was taken in consideration of the sophistication of the equipment at the centre and the critical challenges of its management, adding that the Ministries of Information and Health were directed to call for expression of interest from national and international institutions, organizations and companies for a period of one month.

The Health Commissioner stressed that the process would enable the government to select the best hands to run the centre and “give the citizens of the state and beyond the best of healthcare delivery with best imaging, laboratory services and diagnostics in general”.

He announced that the Council also approved the recruitment of 50 doctors (House Officers) for ESUT Parklane Hospital, Enugu to meet up with the medical demands of the hospital, adding that 15 radiography Interns, who will assist in the imaging department of the establishment, are equally to be recruited.

The Commissioner for Information, Mr. Ogbuagu Anikwe stated that Gov. Ugwuanyi charged members of the EXCO and other Stakeholders in the state to intensify efforts towards the on-going voters’ registration to ensure that all eligible voters were registered within the available window for the exercise.

The Information Commissioner also disclosed that the governor at the meeting commended and encouraged the leadership of the state’s Fire Service for their response to challenges and directed the Commissioner for Rural Development, Hon. Gab Onuzulike, who supervises the agency to meet with the body to agree on bonus to be given to them for their good work.

Gov. Ugwuanyi charges stakeholders on voters’ registration

Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State has charged all stakeholders in the state, irrespective of their political affiliations, to intensify efforts towards the on-going voters’ registration exercise through the sensitization and mobilization of eligible voters, who have not registered with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to do so and obtain their permanent voters’ cards (PVCs).

Gov. Ugwuanyi, who made the call while addressing members of the Peoples Democratic Party during the expanded meeting of the Enugu East Senatorial District of the party held at its zonal headquarters in Enugu, stressed that it has become imperative for the stakeholders in the state to vigorously drive the voters’ registration campaign to the doorsteps of their neighbours to ensure that they get registered.

The governor pointed out that the issue of voter’s registration was beyond politics and very key to the fortunes of the state and urged all eligible voters in the state to endeavor to have their voters’ cards before the forthcoming general elections.

Gov. Ugwuanyi also harped on the need for peace and continuous reconciliation, urging the party stakeholders to ensure justice and accommodate all shades of interests for the party to continue to wax stronger in the state saying: “We want to achieve unity in all the wards for peace to continue to reign”.

He also thanked stakeholders in Enugu State, irrespective of political leanings, for the existing peace in the state, stressing that “this is the first time the state has enjoyed this kind of peace”.

The governor added that it was because of the secure and peaceful atmosphere in the state that business activities are now booming, disclosing that his administration has shifted its focus to developing rural areas where the majority of the people live.

Also at the meeting were; the State Chairman of the party, Hon. Augustine Nnamani; the Speaker of Enugu State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Edward Ubosi and other members of the House from the zone; members of the National Assembly; Local Government Council Chairmen; Local Government Chairmen of the party; councilors, among others.

Ex-servicemen hail Ugwuanyi’s succor to fallen heroes’ widows

The Enugu State Council of the Nigerian Legion has commended Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi for his “rare” gesture in donating the sum of N19.6 million empowerment grant to 96 widows of fallen heroes of the Nigerian Army residing in Abakpa and Awkunanaw Barracks, Enugu to assist them start businesses of their choice to ameliorate their sufferings.

Gov. Ugwuanyi, who took note of the plight of the widows during the 2018 Armed Forces Remembrance Day celebration at the Michael Okpara Square, Enugu promised the intervention of his administration, leading to the recent approval and release of the money to the 82 Division, Nigerian Army, Enugu for disbursement to the women.

Consequently, the General Officer Commanding (GOC), 82 Division, Enugu, Major General Adamu Abubakar, recently disbursed the cash to the affected widows, on behalf of the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Tukur Yusuf Buratai.

Reacting to the development, the chairman of the Nigerian Legion, Enugu State Council, Barr. Emeka Igwesi thanked Gov. Ugwuanyi for his “spirited and magnanimous” financial support to the widows and families of the fallen heroes, describing him as an “unprecedented, exceptional and caring leader”.

The legion chairman stated that the gesture shows that Gov. Ugwaunyi is sensitive to the plight of the people irrespective of their socio-cultural, religious and political differences, adding that the money will go a long way to ameliorate the sufferings of the women.

He also applauded Gov. Ugwuanyi for his unrelenting support and commitment to the welfare of the ex-servicemen, saying: “These rare gestures have given the state Legion a sense of belonging and placed the body ahead of several other Legions in the country”.

The 82 Division’s GOC had while presenting the cash to the wives of the fallen heroes thanked Gov. Ugwuanyi for “his continued support to the widows and the Division”.

The beneficiaries also appreciated Gov. Ugwuanyi for the empowerment grant, caring spirit and passion for the less privileged in the society, and promised to use the money judiciously to improve their living standard.

Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State amid jubilation and commendations from traders in Ogbete Main Market, Enugu on Tuesday inaugurated the main access road in the market with mini parking lot rehabilitated by his administration to improve the standard of the commercial area and enhance business activities.

Inaugurating the road, Gov. Ugwuanyi, who acknowledged cheers from the traders, noted that the project was in keeping with the promise he made during his campaign, adding that his administration had carried out other interventions towards the development of the market.

The governor recalled the difficulty he encountered accessing the Holy Ghost Cathedral, Enugu, for a thanksgiving Mass a day after his inauguration because of the deplorable condition of the Ogbete Main Market-Holy Ghost Cathedral dual carriageway, saying that his administration’s prompt intervention on the road addressed the ugly situation.

“Today, I’m happy that I entered Ogbete Main Market without gridlock. I saw that you people are happy too and to the glory of God there is peace here”, Gov. Ugwuanyi said, stressing: “We can’t talk about development without peace”.

Gov. Ugwuanyi stated that Enugu State has been a reference point for peace and security because “the state is in the hands of God”, and noted that when 27 states were unable to pay workers’ salaries owing to the nation’s economic challenges, his administration was able to pay to reactivate the economy of the state.

The governor, who assisted 30 owners of the burnt corn-mill shops at Ogbete Main Market, Enugu with the sum of M3 million, informed the traders of the recently re-launched empowerment scheme for them, revealing that the package was doubled to accommodate additional 100 winners every month with 17 other markets added to the existing 37 to ensure that more traders benefit, accordingly.

While urging the traders to take advantage of the on-going voters’ registration exercise to obtain their voters cards, the governor promised to continue to lead with the fear of God and live a simply life by always identifying with the commoners and the lowly to give them a sense of belonging as the true heroes of democracy.

In his welcome address, the Caretaker Chairman of Ogbete Main Market Traders Association, Hon. John Eze thanked Gov. Ugwuanyi for his development strides in the state, especially in the market and reassured him that the traders will reciprocate the gesture by voting for him overwhelmingly in 2019.

Also speaking, the Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Engr. Greg Nnaji explained that the road was one of the best projects executed by the ministry through direct labour and appealed to the traders to clean and protect the road for the public’s benefit.

The Executive Chairman of Enugu North Local Government Area, Hon. Emma Onoh, also applauded Gov. Ugwuanyi for his legacy projects in the area, stating that through the 9th Mile –Ekochin- Ngwo- Miliken Hill- New Market road, Ogbete Main Market roads, among others, the council has received a fair share of its dividends of democracy, promising that they will deliver 100 percent votes for the governor in 2019.

Other speakers, namely the Member representing Enugu North Constituency, Hon. Philip Nnamani, and the Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, Barr. Sam Ogbu-Nwobodo, described the governor as “a promise-keeper” and “the Trader-in-Chief of Enugu State” respectively, and urged the traders to continue to support his administration.

Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State has directed the immediate rebuilding of the 72 shops at the Kenyatta Timber Market, Enugu, which were razed down by fire over the weekend as a result of power surge.

Speaking when he visited the market for the second time in company of his deputy, Mrs. Cecilia Ezeilo, the commissioner for works and infrastructure, Engr. Greg Nnaji, the Executive Secretary of the State Emergency Management Agency, Mrs. Nkechi Eneh, among others, Gov. Ugwuanyi also promised to assist owners of the shops with the sum of N7.2 million to enable them restart their businesses.

The governor, who sympathized with traders over the “unfortunate” incident, said that he had to end the meeting of the State Executive Council (EXCO), when he received the news of the fire outbreak to visit the site and ensure that adequate intervention was made to put off the inferno.

Directing that work should commence “now”, after approving and releasing the N14.68 million budget estimate presented by the Chairman of the Kenyatta Timber Dealers Association, Mr. Levi Obi on behalf of the affected traders for the rebuilding of the 72 shops, Gov. Ugwuanyi declared: “I am here to wipe away your tears”.

He reassured the affected traders that his administration will do everything possible to ensure that they remain in business, saying: “When I first visited here on the night this unfortunate incident occurred, I was touched when one of the affected traders told me that he was going back to the village. But I told him ‘you will not go back to your village because of this challenge’’’.

While praying that such incident does not happen again, Gov. Ugwuanyi also wished the traders a bountiful success in their new investment.

Earlier in his remark, the Timber Dealers Association chairman, Mr. Obi on behalf of the traders thanked Gov. Ugwuanyi for his prompt intervention and constant visits to the market since the incident in spite of his tight schedule, especially the night when the fire outbreak occurred.

Mr. Obi described Ugwuanyi as “responsive and a governor for the poor and everybody”, adding that the traders were overwhelmed with joy despite the challenges they were confronted with when they saw the governor at the site of the inferno the night it occurred.

He also commended the governor for development projects his administration has executed within the area, such as the Ndemde Bridge that links the timber market and Achara Layout, Enugu as well as the Lomalinda-Timber Market road, adding that 24 traders in the market have so far benefitted from the state’s Traders Empowerment Scheme.

Regretting that the incident was caused by the power surge, Mr. Obi called on the Enugu Electrical Distribution Company (EEDC) to provide a dedicated transformer for the market to enable the traders take precautionary measures at the close of work.

He urged the traders to ensure that they register with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to obtain their Permanent Voters’ Cards to reciprocate the governor’s kind gesture by returning him to power in 2019.

Also speaking, the Executive Chairman of Enugu South Local Government Area, Hon. Sunday Ugwu, while welcoming the governor to the market commended him for his timely intervention, saying that “the governor has not slept since this fire incident happened”.

Bumper package for Traders as Ugwuanyi re-launches Empowerment Scheme

Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi’s administration has announced the second phase of the Enugu State Traders Empowerment Scheme with an annual bumper package of N120 million instead of the previous N60 million, to assist the traders in the state grow their various businesses, representing twice the earlier amount.

Briefing newsmen after the meeting of the State Executive Council, the Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, Barr. Sam Ogbu-Nwobodo, explained that in the new scheme 200 genuine traders will now win N5 million every month as against 100 traders in the last scheme.

Barr.Ogbu-Nwobodo stated that the state government added additional 17 markets to the existing 37 to ensure that the empowerment scheme reaches out to every nook and cranny of the state for more winners to benefit, accordingly.

He added that the contents of the new scheme reflect the firm commitment of Gov. Ugwuanyi to the wellbeing of the people as well as the reactivation of the state’s economy, stressing the outcome of the first phase of the scheme was impressive as “genuine traders who have been forgotten in the past were remembered”.

According to him, “the first phase of this all important Enugu Traders Empowerment Scheme was all involving. Genuine traders were present at the events and participated fully. No fraud was recorded. It was so successful that only genuine traders won. The lessons we learnt from the previous will be improved on in this second phase to assist more traders grow their various businesses. The council after reviewing the exercise said that it must continue because of its positive impact on the traders and the economy of the state”.

Barr. Ogbu-Nwobodo noted that a few winners of the scheme have not come to collect their money and advised traders to crosscheck with the leaders of their various markets to find if they won or not, adding that the names of those who have not claimed their money will soon be made public in the media.

Also speaking, the Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Engr. Greg Nnaji disclosed that the council in continuation of the state government’s efforts towards urban and rural roads rehabilitation and construction programme awarded contract for the construction of Omuoha- Obuoffia-Awkunanaw road in Nkanu West Local Government Area and Enugu-Abakaliki (Eke-Obinagu junction) – Onunweneabo- Akpuoga Nike in Enugu East L.G.A.

In what he described as “a paradigm shift from roads construction to public buildings”, Engr. Nnaji disclosed that the council awarded contract for the construction of Customary Court of Appeal Headquarters at Independence Layout, Enugu to fit the purpose of a standard court and enhance proficiency, productivity and efficient service delivery.

He added that the contracts passed through due process and will be executed in line with due diligence and other established engineering practices of the ministry of works and infrastructure.

The commissioner for information, Mr. Ogbagu Anikwe equally disclosed that the council in keeping with the Land Use Charges Law, recently passed by the State House of Assembly, approved the streamlining of collection of building charges by one agency of government against the earlier practice where many agencies of the state and local governments do the same.

Mr. Anikwe stated that the aim is to ensure that additional burden of double taxations is not placed on the public, explaining that when collected into one source, the money will be shared between the state and Local Governments on agreed ratio according to the law.

There was excitement in Enugu on Wednesday as Gov. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi formally handed over N5 million cheque each to 118 autonomous communities that have so far fulfilled the requirements for the release of the fund, as the first tranche of the N10 million earmarked for every community in the state to execute development projects of their choice.

The 118 autonomous communities that received their cheques, according to the Commissioner for Rural Development, Hon. Gab Onuzulike, were among the 450 communities approved by the Enugu State Executive Council (EXCO) that have opened accounts with designated banks. He added that the remaining communities will receive theirs as soon as they open bank accounts and send the details to the Ministry of Chieftaincy Matters/Rural Development.

Gov. Ugwuanyi while presenting the cheques to the Traditional Rulers and the Presidents-General of Town Unions in the communities stated that the decision was in line with his administration’ resolve to empower each autonomous community in the state with the sum of N10 million to carry out projects that would address their “peculiar and immediate development needs”.

The governor added that the government decided that the choice of the projects and their execution were left “entirely” to the discretion and at the disposal of the stakeholders of each individual community.

He said: “This was in fulfillment of our promise to promote participatory democracy and extensive rural development in the state as well as the involvement of all local communities in the implementation of government policies and programmes”.

Gov. Ugwuanyi, who disclosed that the exercise was the first time in the history of the state, explained that the projects to be executed by the communities are different from those being done in various communities by his administration through the Community Development Project (CDP), the World Bank-assisted Community and Social Development Project (CSDP) as well as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

According to him, “to march words with action, the State Executive Council on the 22nd of November 2017, approved the release of the sum of N2.25 billion to cover the first tranche of N5 million to be given to every community in the state so as to enable them commence work on their self-chosen projects. The communities were also asked to open bank accounts for the lodgment of the said funds”.

While thanking the communities that received the cheques for their support and eagerness to participate in “this historic scheme”, Gov. Ugwuanyi expressed explicit confidence that they will utilize the funds for the identified purposes for the improvement of the socio-economic conditions of their people, reassuring that his administration will not relent in its development efforts until the fruits of good governance are felt in every community in Enugu State.

Responding on behalf of the Igwes and the Town Unions' Presidents-General, the Chairman of Enugu State Council of Traditional Rulers, Amb. Lawrence Agubuzu thanked Gov. Ugwuanyi for the "innovative, unique, socio-economic and new developmental strategy for Enugu State", saying that they are happy to have him as a governor.

The Caretaker Committee Chairman of the Town Unions, Hon. Paully Eze had described the release of the fund as a pleasant surprise, saying that the governor has wiped away the tears of the people in so many communities, who he said had never experienced any development project in their areas.

He maintained that the grassroots development programme, will ensure that government presence is registered in all the over 450 autonomous communities in the state, commending Gov. Ugwuanyi for his passion for the wellbeing of the people.

Also, Chief Olusegun Osoba wants the party back after Amosun snatched it from him.
