Politics / Ogun Governorship Aspirant Delivers Transformers Promised On Live Radio by agbotikuyo(f): 5:38pm On Apr 19, 2018

An Ogun State PDP governorship aspirant, Honorable Oladipupo Adebutu, has donated electricity transformers estimated at over N25 million to five communities in the state.

The communities include the Surulere community at Adigbe and Ayegbami community in Apete, both in Abeokuta, as well as, Eleja Alagbayun community in Ewekoro, Oyeshiku community and Alafia Kobape community, both at Kobape.

The formal presentation of the transformers took place at Goshen Estate, Asero, in Abeokuta.

Adebutu, a House of Reps member from Remo Federal Constituency, who was represented at the event by his senior aide, Seye Sonuga, explained that the gesture was in fulfilment of the promises he made to callers from the five communities, while featuring as guest on a Rockcity News Programme “Daybreak Show” last February 4.

According to Adebutu, over 40 communities in Ogun East senatorial district, 30 communities in Ogun West senatorial district and 25 communities in Ogun Central senatorial district, have benefited from his distribution of electricity transformers.

Chairman of Surulere community, Adigbe, Ogundimu Adebanjo, whose community has been in darkness for the past six months, appreciated the gesture, pledging that all the benefiting communities will mobilize support for the actualization of his governorship ambition in 2019.

Politics / Senator Buruji Kashamu Fingered In OPC- Cultists Clash At Ijebu Igbo by agbotikuyo(f): 8:39am On Apr 10, 2018
Armed policemen have been deployed to Ijebu Igbo in Ogun State following clashes between members of a secret cult and Oodu’a Peoples Congress (OPC) after a political meeting in the town.

Special units of police force including mobile police force, federal special anti-robbery squad as well as anti-cult unit and top police officers moved to the town to restore order.

Spokesman of the state police command, Abimbola Oyeyemi, said three people were killed in the clash including a police officer, a member of OPC and a suspected cultist.

“Some members of the OPC and Aiye cult group clashed on Sunday. One OPC member was shot dead and one member of Aiye cult group was also shot dead.

“This morning, while our men were on routine patrol, they were ambushed by suspected hoodlums. They shot dead one Police Inspector and another one was seriously injured.

“The injured policeman is recuperating in a hospital,” he stated.

But witnesses say about six people died in the clashes.

Several people were also injured in the clash, which began on Sunday evening from a political gathering, earlier addressed by a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leader in the state, Senator Buruji Kashamu.

There were sustained gunshots throughout the night in the town as the two groups engaged each other in bloody clashes across the town.

The fighting resumed early on Monday forcing shops and banks to hurriedly close for the day, while the streets were deserted.

Police spokesman said that police and other security agencies have restored order in the town.

Politics / N24bn Fraud: A’court Jails Pension Thief Six Years, Fines Him N22.9bn by agbotikuyo(f): 8:32am On Mar 22, 2018
The Abuja Division of the Court of Appeal on Wednesday quashed the sentence of two years imprisonment with option of N750,000 fine imposed by the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, on a former official of the Police Pension Office, Yakubu Yusuf, for stealing N24bn pension funds.

A three-man panel of the Court of Appeal headed by Justice Abdu Aboki, in a unanimous judgment, described the High Court’s sentence as unreasonable and substituted it with a total of six years’ imprisonment with an addition of N22.9bn fine.

Justice Emmanuel Agim, who delivered the lead judgment of the court, ruled that “the sentences levied” by the High Court “are clearly light and lenient ones.”

The justice ruled that this allowed “the convict, who had admitted misappropriating or stealing N24bn, the option to pay the sum of N250,000 per count of offence in lieu of serving a prison term of two years for the offence,” to enjoy the huge balance he had in his possession.

He added that the “amount” of the sentences “is paltry, a pittance and unreasonably low.”

Justice Agim noted that it was “disproportionate to the amount stolen and therefore can comfortably and quickly be paid by the convict from the humongous amount stolen.”

He added that with the sentence, the convict would be left with “a huge balance of the stolen funds in his possession and without really causing him any pain of punishment.”

Justice Abubakar Talba of the Federal High Court in Gudu, Abuja, had in his judgment delivered on January 28, 2013 convicted Yusuf and sentenced him to two years imprisonment with an option of N750,000 fine.

Yusufu, had after pleading guilty to three of the counts preferred against him and others, was convicted and sentenced to two years imprisonment on each count with an option of paying N250, 000 fine on each of the three counts.

Although, two years imprisonment was the maximum jail term with an option of undisclosed fine prescribed as punishment by Section 309 of the Penal Code Act, under which Yusufu and his co-defendants were charged, Justice Talba ordered that the two years imprisonment imposed on the convict should run concurrently with the option of paying the N750,000 fine.

Politics / NULGE Endorses Ugwuanyi For Second Term For Peace, Good Governance by agbotikuyo(f): 7:40pm On Mar 20, 2018
Workers in the 17 local government councils in Enugu State under the aegis of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) and LG pensioners have endorsed Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi as their candidate for the 2019 governorship election in the state in appreciation of peace and good governance and his “undeterred friendly disposition to labour”.

The Enugu State chapter of NULGE made the declaration during a colourful and well attended solidarity rally in support of good governance in Enugu State held at the Michael Okpara Square, Enugu. The event, which coincided with the date of Gov. Ugwuanyi’s 54th birthday anniversary, was attended by the national president of the union, Comrade Ibrahim Khaleel Abdulkadir, who described the governor as a leader with “huge humility, vision and comradeship”.

The workers and retirees in an address delivered by the state president of NULGE, Comrade Kenneth Ugwueze stated that the governor “in less than three years in office wiped away our tears and assured us a better future”, declaring: “We have come out today as the product of that mandate to overwhelmingly endorse you as our candidate for the 2019 governorship election in Enugu State”.

NULGE national president also appreciated Gov. Ugwuanyi for his good works in the state and commitment to peace and wellbeing of the less-privileged as well as the entire workforce.

He said: “Your Excellency, you’re the voice of the voiceless. I’m not surprised at the level of peace in your state. Where there is peace, the hand of God is there. That is why Enugu State is in the hands of God. When a man that fears God is in charge certainly God’s hands will be in every corner of his domain. After your second term in 2023, something greater is coming your way”.

The state president of the union, Comrade Ugwueze, in his address noted with delight that Enugu State under the leadership of Gov. Ugwuanyi “undoubtedly has witnessed unprecedented and unimaginable developments in all the spheres of governance despite the economic meltdown in the country”.

The union commended Gov. Ugwuanyi for his sterling leadership anchored on “accountability, transparency, rule of law, responsiveness, participation, equity, inclusiveness, effective and efficient service delivery”, saying that the qualities have endeared him to the people of the state.

The workers and retirees, who wished the governor a happy birthday anniversary, added that they were also impressed that Ugwuanyi’s administration conducted both audit and biometric capturing of council workers and retirees which ensured that “our monthly salaries and pensions are paid promptly and regularly”.

They further stated that their “outstanding arrears of salaries ranging from one month to fifteen months, arrears of leave allowances ranging from one year to seven years, four months arrears of pensions” were also paid, adding the “commencement of the payment of gratuities to local government retirees through the London/ Paris Club refund, after sixteen years of its non-payment”.

Other achievements of the Ugwuanyi administration highlighted by the union, which they said have impacted positively on their lives and the people of the state include: “Approval for the full implementation of National 2006 Scheme of Service for LG workers; approval for the conduct and release of our outstanding promotions, conversions and advancements; payment of 13th month Christmas bonus to LG workers; massive infrastructural developments of both urban and rural areas through your unique fiscal management of the state’s scarce resources; positive transformation of the education, agriculture, health sectors and other areas of governance; maintenance of peace in all parts of the state which has made Enugu State the safest place to live in Nigeria and other numerous achievements”.

Responding, Gov. Ugwuanyi, who described the rally as historic thanked the local government workers and retirees for their solidarity and affection for his administration and “the endorsement, massive turnout and wonderful audience” at the event.

The elated governor also appreciated them for the “massive support you gave us during the elections that brought us into office and for the cooperation that you have continued to accord us since the inception of this administration”.

He equally applauded members of NULGE for supporting the reforms his administration has been carrying out in the Local government administration, which he said saves “the government over N161 million monthly in wages paid to them”.

Gov. Ugwuanyi, therefore, reassured them of his administration’s commitment to address their needs within the limits of available resources, urging them to remain steadfast in praying for him and his administration

Ezeagu people, Nkanu Traders endorse Ugwuanyi for re-election, as Hundreds of APC Members defect to PDP

The People of Ezeagu Local Government Area have unanimously endorsed Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State for re-election in 2019, saying he has delivered on his campaign promises and considered the people of the area in political appointments.

This came as traders from "Nkanuland" under the auspices of Nkanu Traders Association also declared their support for the governor in 2019, stressing that they are behind him till 2023.

The people of Ezeagu gave the endorsement during a well attended civic reception organized in honour of Gov. Ugwuanyi by the Gburugburu Movement Ezeagu held at Aguogbuowa, headquarters of the council area.

The people said they were highly impressed with the development strides of the governor and his uncommon leadership style which have entrenched peace and good governance in the council area in particular and the state in general.

The event at Ezeagu LGA also witnessed the defection of hundreds of All Progressives Congress (APC) members to the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

The defecting members said they were tired of their former party and opposition politics in the state, hence their conviction for the action.

Leader of the group, Gen. Okafor said they were at the reception for Governor Ugwuanyi to see that they had fully converted to the PDP and request him to carry them along.

Moving the motion for the endorsement of Gov. Ugwuanyi for second term, which was seconded by a businessman, Dr. Ozor Nweke, a Professor of Media and Communication Studies, Ike Ndolo said that the people of Ezeagu have every reason to support the governor for re-election, disclosing that apart from development projects, he chose a daughter of Ezeagu, Mrs. Cecilia Ezeilo as his deputy and appointed their son, Dr. Festus Uzor as Chief of Staff.

In her remark, the Deputy Governor expressed delight that she is working cordially with the governor, who she described as "a peaceful leader and the governor for Enugu State, not for PDP alone".

Mrs. Ezeilo hailed Gov. Ugwuanyi's grassroots development initiatives, adding that the governor has ensured that at least one project is executed in every community in the state.

Chairman of the reception planning committee, Prof Chike Anibeze said the reception was organised by the entire 42 communities in Ezeagu L.G.A for Ugwuanyi's magnanimity in allocation of human and physical resources in the state.

He said: "Your Excellency, we have unanimously devoted today to give you this reception which came after a deep reflection on the Gburugburu Model of governance and how it has positively affected the Ezeagu people.

"We are exceedingly delighted that the Ezeagu people are major stakeholders in this government which gives us the uncommon pride to share in its numerous successes".

The Chief of Staff to the Governor, Dr. Uzor, who put the motion for the governor's endorsement to a voice vote, which received a resounding acclamation, noted that the people of Ezeagu stand to benefit more from the state government if the governor is re-elected in 2019

Governor Ugwuanyi in his response thanked the people for the endorsement and urged the people to endeavor to collect their permanent voters cards, describing PVCs as key to the fortune of the state.

Politics / Ugwuanyi’s 54th Day Of Charity, Good Governance by agbotikuyo(f): 7:26am On Mar 17, 2018
Ugwuanyi’s 54th Day of Charity, Good Governance

By Louis Amoke

Born on March 20, 1964, His Excellency, Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State, to the glory of God, will on Tuesday, March 20, clock 54 years.

The upcoming anniversary, no doubt, calls for celebration and thanksgiving to the God of Abraham, God of Isaac, God of Jacob and the awesome God of David, for His mercies and kindness to the man of the moment, who hardly commences any engagement without giving Him “due glory, honour and adoration”.

This occasion reinvigorates the governor’s commitment to charity and almsgiving - a constant moral obligation in appreciation of God’s goodness and amazing grace to him as “Nwaogbenye”. The nucleus of the event is, therefore, anchored on the wellbeing of the poor and underprivileged in the society with every sense of divinity and patriotism.

It is common knowledge that during this annual ritual, Gov. Ugwuanyi, in his usual lifestyle, has always maintained an anonymous breath of love, care, solidarity and compassion with the lowly and downtrodden through his philanthropic gestures. The governor’s bite of philanthropy, which knows no bounds, has remained the fulcrum of his success story and the nexus between him and God.

Re-echoing his disposition towards alleviating the sufferings of the people, which he has always ascribed as the greatest objective of government, Gov. Ugwuanyi has continued to make date with history through charity and uncommon leadership style.

Easily given to kindness and compassion towards sharing in the pains and sufferings of the lowly and vulnerable, the governor in the spirit of the Lenten Season and in keeping with his long-held tradition, had always urged those who intended offering him birthday gifts “to channel them to charity homes and orphanages in appreciation of God’s mercies and kindness”. He had also expressed aversion to marking the occasion with public activities.

As an unassuming leader, God-fearing and adequate personality whose wealth of experience, dint of hard work, intellectual ability, milk of human kindness, humility, simplicity, benevolence and penchant for peace and good governance have continued to endear him to the people, Gov. Ugwuanyi’s swelling popularity and transformational mark in the socio-economic and political gamut of Enugu State and the country at large, stand him out as an epitome of success, emblem of unity and a great achiever.

The governor is so much loved and admired by the people to the extent that the avalanche of goodwill, acceptance and tremendous support he enjoys from all spheres of the society have remained unbeatable in the annals of the state. He earned this feat through his open-door policy, inclusive leadership and close contact with the commoners on the streets, who are always touched and honoured by the rare privilege of meeting, seeing, feeling and interacting with their governor on a face value.

Having enjoyed similar goodwill from the people during the 2015 governorship election as a result of his sterling leadership qualities, one is glad to note that the governor, in less than two and half years in office received gale of spur-of-the-moment commendations for his good works and uninfluenced endorsements for re-election in 2019 from virtually all spheres of the society such as the leaders of religious institutions; chieftains of the opposition political parties, state workforce, market traders, artisans, among others.

Consequently, one therefore, appreciates with all sense of objectivity, the tremendous achievements of Gov. Ugwuanyi in Enugu State, which have entrenched peace and good governance in spite of the nation’s daunting economic challenges. He has maintained his long standing path to vision, integrity, inclusiveness, accountability, transparency and prudent management of the state’s lean resources. His milestone feats in the provision of massive critical infrastructure across the state; rural development; qualitative and affordable education and healthcare delivery; regular payment of workers’ salaries and pensions; innovative and robust investment drive; peace and security; empowerment, agricultural revolution, among others, are not only enduring and unprecedented, they have impacted positively on the lives of the people, especially the rural dwellers, rekindling their confidence in participatory democracy.

For instance, the governor’s passion for the wellbeing of the people, especially the lowly and the forgotten, saw to his administration’s paradigm shift of development from urban centres to the rural areas to ensure that long-neglected communities in the state feel the positive impact of governance.

In this regard, it is on record that Gov. Ugwuanyi has executed landmark road projects in the rural areas and satellite towns where the majority of the people reside than in the urban. Interestingly, road projects are on-going in these areas, such as Abakpa, Emene, Eha-Amufu, Amurri, Akpugo, Coal Camp, Ngenevu, Iva Valley, among others, while more road contracts are being awarded seamlessly to improve the living standard of the dwellers and give them a sense of belonging.

In view of the above, it is also on record that the state government has spent over N40 billion on roads construction and rehabilitation across the state in the last two and half years, covering over 240 kilometers.

Few weeks ago, Gov. Ugwuanyi flaunted his commitment to ensuring that meaningful development reaches every nook and cranny of the state with the disbursement of N2.25 billion to 450 autonomous communities, as the first tranche of the N10 million earmarked for every community in the state to execute development projects of their choice.

The uniqueness and excitement of the scheme, christened: “One Community, One Project” - the first of its kind in the history of the state, are that the choice of the projects and their execution were left entirely to the discretion and at the disposal of the stakeholders of each individual community according to their peculiar and immediate development needs.

According to the governor, the decision was also in fulfillment of his administration’s promise to promote participatory democracy and extensive rural development in the state as well as the active involvement of all local communities in the implementation of government policies and programmes.

Recently, his administration re-launched the state’s Traders Empowerment Scheme with an annual bumper package of N120 million instead of the previous N60 million, representing double the amount at inception of the scheme, to assist the traders in the state grow their various businesses.

In the repackaged scheme, 200 genuine traders will now win N10 million every month at N50, 000 each as against N5 million for 100 traders in the last scheme. Again, 17 other markets were added to the existing 37 to ensure that the empowerment scheme reaches out to every nook and cranny of the state for more winners to benefit, accordingly.

As a compassionate leader, Gov. Ugwuanyi was recently commended by not only the Nigerian Army but also the ex-servicemen in Enugu for his N19.6 million empowerment grant to 96 widows of fallen heroes residing in the state to assist them start businesses of their choice to ameliorate their sufferings.

Extending his wings of magnanimity, the people’s governor, a few weeks ago, upon receiving the sad news of the fire outbreak at the Kenyatta Timber Market, Enugu, had to end the meeting of the State Executive Council (EXCO) to visit the site and ensure that adequate intervention was made to put off the inferno. The governor did not stop at that, within an interval of two days, he visited the market for the second time, and directed the immediate rebuilding of the affected 72 shops with a promise to assist owners of the shops with the sum of N7.2 million to enable them restart their businesses, saying: “I am here to wipe away your tears”.

It is also noteworthy that the governor’s wife, Mrs. Monica Ugwuanyi has been supportive and has remained in the vanguard propelling the husband’s philanthropic gestures into the hearts of the poor and the less privileged through her pet project - Ugo Touch of Life Foundation (U-TOLF), designed to assist indigent members of the society, especially the women, children, aged and other vulnerable groups attend to some of their basic needs.

The Enugu Governor’s wife in the course of rendering selfless service, just like her husband, is presently on tour of communities across the state offering free medical treatments against malaria, high blood pressure, eye problem, de-worming of children and other debilitating health challenges to the dwellers especially the underprivileged. She also uses the occasion to empower the beneficiaries of her skill acquisition programme with sewing and grinding machines, hairdryers, school uniforms, bags, sandals, cash gifts, among other items.

In recognition of all these long cherished legacies and others too numerous to mention, which are the radiant bedrock of the governor’s 54th birthday anniversary celebration; it is highly expected of the people of the state and beyond to continue to support and fervently pray for God’s abundant blessings upon him to render more selfless service to humanity and hold on tightly to his vision to build Enugu State of our founding fathers’ dream.

Congratulations and many happy returns in advance, the people’s governor, for Enugu State is truly in the hands of God.

In keeping with the promise in his inaugural address to pay special attention in developing the rural areas (where the majority of the people live) to create more urban centres to boost economic growth with emphasis on equipping and modernizing Nsukka "- a University town founded over half a century ago - to compete with other University towns in attracting technology and knowledge-based businesses and other industrial support ventures, bearing in mind that Nsukka is the second largest town in Enugu State", Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, to the glory of God and service to mankind, lights up Opi-Nsukka dual carriageway...
