Overmars’ Revelation Mounts Pressure On Ed Woodward As Man United Continue To Misfire
Manchester United will be on red alert after Marc Overmars revealed he is ready for a new challenge alongside his Ajax boss Edwin van der Sar.

United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward has spent three years searching for someone with the right football expertise to overhaul an Old Trafford transfer model that is unfit for purpose.

Ajax director of football Overmars fits the bill after building a recruitment and youth system in Holland that is the envy of the world.

And the Dutchman has now dropped a tantalising hint that is sure to interest the Glazer family who own United.

Former Arsenal winger Overmars, 47, said: “When I was appointed in this job at Ajax I knew I only wanted to stay for three or four years maximum.

“I have been here eight seasons now! For me – but just as much for Edwin – it is sure that we are not going to carry on here until we are 60.

“This job at Ajax is costing too much energy. The whole of the Netherlands is constantly on my back and has an opinion about us. The job has brought a lot of great things too. Edwin and I are proud that we have brought Ajax back where it should be in Europe.”

United have not won the Premier League in the seven years since Sir Alex Ferguson retired – despite spending almost £1billion on new players.

David Moyes, Louis van Gaal and Jose Mourinho have all been sacked and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is now under pressure after a poor start to the season.

Many United fans believe Woodward and chief transfer negotiator Matt Judge should carry the can after a summer in which they failed to deliver top target Jadon Sancho.

The pair are close friends and their relationship helped Donny van de Beek join United in the summer from Ajax for £36million.

Van der Sar has been touted for a possible return to Old Trafford as the director of football his old club are looking for. But Overmars heads recruitment in Amsterdam, while Van der Sar operates at boardroom level. And the Dutch duo come as a package.

Overmars said: “We have a special bond. The best thing is that we enjoyed the great 1990s as players together.

“At the time you don’t realise how special that is. Now, 25 years later, we have achieved the same things at management level that we achieved as players.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer may have missed out on Jadon Sancho in the summer, but he still made some big moves in the transfer market with Donny van de Beek, Alex Telles and Edinson Cavani all arriving.

But their start to the season has been a mixed bag, with a home defeat to Crystal Palace and a 6-1 thrashing by Spurs at one end of the scale, and a tremendous 2-1 win over PSG in Paris at the other.

“We had one shared ambition – we wanted Ajax to reach a European final. Which one did not matter. We managed that in 2017, and now we want more.

“We want to win the Champions League or Europa League.”

It was Dutch legend Johan Cruyff who reunited Overmars and Van der Sar at Ajax.

The pair played in the Amsterdam club’s 1995 Champions League triumph.

Overmars went on to play for Arsenal and Barcelona, while Van der Sar finished his career at United after spells with Juventus and Fulham. Cruyff wanted to put Ajax’s future in the hands of two football specialists – something that’s been missing at Old Trafford.

Ajax currently have almost £250m in the bank after cashing in on stars including Frenkie de Jong, Matthijs de Ligt, Davinson Sanchez, Hakim Ziyech and Van de Beek.

But despite the big-money sales they are once again a dominant force both at home and abroad.

Ajax sit top of the Eredivisie as reigning champions and reached the final of the Europa League in 2017 and the Champions League semi-finals two years later.

The club remains committed to identifying and developing their own talent rather than spending big sums in the transfer market.

That would certainly appeal to United’s owners after the club’s debts rocketed back towards £500m in the aftermath of the coronavirus pandemic.

Woodward is regarded as bullet proof at Old Trafford after continuing to build the club commercially for the Glazers despite some lacklustre results on the pitch.

But when it comes to what United need as a football club, Van der Sar and Overmars tick a lot of boxes.

Super Eagles striker, Victor Osimhen is expected back in Naples in the coming days after he was ruled out Tuesday’s AFCON tie against Sierra Leone in Freetown.

It was a huge sigh of relief for Napoli chiefs after words filtered in that their prized assets, Victor Osimhen won’t be going under knives ahead of next Serie A fixtures against AC Milan.

The club now wants their star striker to return to Naples in the coming days to enable the club doctor to ascertain the level of his injury to enable him prepared adequately well for Napoli’s upcoming clash against AC Milan.Nigerians were left stunned after the national team, Super Eagles drew 4-4 with Sierra Leone despite taking a comfortable 4-0 lead.

Sports / REPORT: Ronaldo Analysing Man United Offer by Aguskid: 5:07pm On Nov 13, 2020
According to reports, Cristiano Ronaldo is currently analysing an offer from Manchester United for a possible return next summer.

The Portuguese became a household name at Old Trafford now 35, where he spent six years at Old Trafford, between 2003 and 2009, and in that time he lifted three Premier League titles and one Champions League. He scored 118 goals in 292 games before joining Real Madrid for a then world transfer record of 96 million euros.

“Our sources in Manchester and Porto confirm that Manchester United have tempted Cristiano Ronaldo with a return to the club next season,” the ESPN journalist Christian Martin’s tweet read. “The Portuguese is analysing it. Juventus would negotiate if he asked for [the move].”

Ronaldo has a contract at Juventus until June 2022 and he was viewed as an important signing for the club as they looked to go to the next level, but the financial impact of the COVID-19 pandemic has meant that his hefty salary has become a very heavy burden.

Ronaldo admitted in 2014 while still playing for Real Madrid that he would like to one day return to Manchester United.

“I love Manchester,” he stated. “Everyone knows that. Manchester is in my heart. The fans are incredible and I would like to return one day.”

Ronaldo has already scored six goals in six Serie A games for Juventus so far this season.

Sports / AFCON Qualifiers: Be Clever Against Nigeria, Sierra Leone Coach Warns Players by Aguskid: 4:44pm On Nov 13, 2020
Determined to return his side to winning ways in 2022 AFCON qualifiers, Sierra Leone gaffer, John Kiester has tasked his players to put on their thinking cap when they file out against one of the continent’s best side on Friday.

With just a point in the bag, Leone Stars face an uphill task against a star-studded Nigeria that is armed to the teeth with one of Africa’s best striker in Victor Osimhen. But Kiester believes players’ mentality on the pitch will likely determine if Leone Star will be leaving Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium with a good result.

He further warned his players to expect a difficult game in Benin given the pedigree of their opponents but told Nigeria that it won’t be a stroll in the park for Super Eagles either.“As a group, we have to be positive in our approach in both games. It’s not the easiest of games taking on one of the best nations in our continent,” Keister to footballsierraleone before the team departed Freetown for Benin City.Kiester then urged his player to be wise as a serpent when they file out against their West Africa neighbour if Sierra Leone must bounce back from rock-bottom and revive her dream of qualifying for their third AFCON finals after their last appearance in 1996.

“Going into the game against Nigeria, we have to be clever in our method, and we have to be honest about it. We have been working on our strategies, but we must have the right mentality,” he said.Super Eagles’ last international game in Benin City was a friendly against Botswana which ended in a goalless draw. It is worthy of note that the Super Eagles have only won one of their four matches in the multi-purpose stadium.

Sports / AFCON Qualifers: Rohr Upbeat As Super Eagles Gun For Victory by Aguskid: 3:51pm On Nov 13, 2020
Super Eagles gaffer, Gernot Rohr is confident of his players’ ability to dig deep into their technical books of tricks and come out on a winning note against Sierra Leone this evening.

Fielding questions from reporters in Benin City ahead of the encounter, the former Gabon coach stated in clear terms that the team is driven by its age-long desire to win matches and that it will be business as usual when Nigeria file out against Sierra Leone in 2022 AFCON qualifiers.

“Desire to win our games and since the beginning, we were in this direction, we are sometimes lucky to win our first games but I think the determination of the staff, of the team, is giving us this opportunity to be ready,” Rohr said.” It won’t be easy but if we start with nine points in three games, even a draw in Sierra Leone could be enough but we go all the time for winning the games. ” Rohr said. The former Burkina Faso gaffer also calmed frayed nerves of Nigerians over the antics and strength of their opponents, saying his players are now aware of what to expect from Leone Stars’ having watched their opponents match footage.

“It won’t be easy, we showed already a video to our players but unfortunately some of our players arrived on Wednesday night so we had to do it again on Thursday.“We will not underrate this team, our tradition is to be qualified with games to spare, we want to continue in this tradition,” he concluded.

Politics / I’m Leaving PDP For APC – Governor Umahi Finally Breaks Silence by Aguskid: 2:12pm On Nov 11, 2020
Following weeks of unending speculation, the Governor of Ebonyi state has revealed his intention to join the All Progressives Congress.

The Governor of Ebonyi State, Dave Umahi, told the national leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party in Abuja on Tuesday that he was leaving the party.

According to Punch, he said he would join the ruling All Progressives Congress which he claimed would protect the interest of the South-East in the 2023 elections.

It was gathered that Umahi told the members of the National Working Committee of the PDP that his decision to join the APC was irrevocable.

The members of the PDP NWC, who were led to the meeting by its National Chairman, Prince Uche Secondus, were said to have tried in vain to convince the governor not to abandon the party.

Apart from Secondus, among those that were at the meeting at the Ebonyi Governor’s Lodge in Abuja were Deputy National Secretary, Agbo Emmanuel; National Organising Secretary, Austin Akobondu; Financial Secretary, Abdullahi Maibasira; National Women Leader, Mariya Waziri and Senator Sulieman Nazif.

The governor was said to be friendly when he received the PDP delegation, but stuck to his decision to leave the PDP when the issue came up.

It was gathered that the PDP delegation impressed it upon the governor that there was no need leaving the PDP for the APC, which they argued had become unpopular.

Sources at the meeting, however, said the governor was not convinced, insisting that the APC was planning to zone the 2023 Presidency to the South-East.

He was said to have promised to stay in the PDP if the party could make a pronouncement that it would zone the Presidency to the same zone.

One of the sources said, “I think his (governor’s) mind was made up. We told him there was no need for him to abandon the party that had made him a deputy governor, state chairman of the party, two-time governor and all that. But he refused.

“He wanted us to unilaterally zone the office of the Presidency to his area. We cannot do that. Parties are not run that way. He told us he was leaving. That is what we got from him.’’

When contacted, Secondus confirmed that the party’s leadership met with Umahi.

He, however, refused to declared the details of the meeting, insisting that the meeting was on ‘‘national issues.’’

Politics / As America Counts, The World Holds Its Breath For U.S. Election Outcome by Aguskid: 7:56pm On Nov 04, 2020
A day after Americans voted in a bitterly contested election, the rest of the world was none the wiser on Wednesday, with millions of votes still to count, the race too close to call and a mounting risk of days or even weeks of legal uncertainty.

Donald Trump’s pre-emptive declaration of victory at the White House was condemned by some U.S. political commentators and civil rights groups, who warned about the trampling of long-standing democratic norms.

Most world leaders and foreign ministers sat on their hands, trying not to add any fuel to the electoral fire.

“Let’s wait and see what the outcome is,” said British Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab. “There’s obviously a significant amount of uncertainty. It’s much closer than I think many had expected.”

But while Raab and others urged caution, the Slovenian prime minister broke ranks, congratulating Trump and the Republican party via Twitter.

“It’s pretty clear that American people have elected @realDonaldTrump and @Mike_Pence for #4moreyears,” wrote Janez Jansa, one of several east European leaders, including Hungary’s Viktor Orban, who are fervent Trump allies. “Congratulations @GOP for strong results across the #US.”

The latest vote tally showed Democrat challenger Joe Biden with a lead in the Electoral College – 224 votes to 213, with 270 needed for victory – but with counting still be completed in at least five major ‘battleground’ states: Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, North Carolina and Georgia.

In 2000, the election between George W. Bush and Al Gore hinged on Florida. It was ultimately decided in Bush’s favour by the U.S. Supreme Court, in a ruling five weeks after the vote.

In his comments, Trump suggested the Supreme Court – to which he has nominated three of the nine justices – would have to decide the winner again.

On Twitter, the hashtags #Trump, #Biden and #USElections2020 were trending from Russia to Pakistan, Malaysia to Kenya and across Europe and Latin America, underscoring how much every region of the world sees the outcome as pivotal.

In Russia, which U.S. intelligence agencies have accused of trying to interfere in the election, there was no official reaction.

But Pro-Kremlin lawmaker Vyacheslav Nikonov, the grandson of Stalin’s foreign minister, advised Russians to stock up on popcorn to watch the show he predicted was about to unfold, saying U.S. society was fatally split.

“The result of the elections is the worst outcome for America,” Nikonov, who welcomed Trump’s 2016 win, wrote on Facebook. “Whoever wins the legal battles half of Americans will not consider them the lawful president. Let’s stock up on large quantities of popcorn.”

In Australia, crowds watched the results roll in while drinking beer in an American bar in Sydney.

“The news is so much better when Trump is in,” said Glen Roberts, wearing a red ‘Make Europe Great Again’ baseball cap. “You never know what he said, it’s so good. I think it’ll be less interesting if Trump loses.”

Others were quick to underline the ramifications of the U.S. vote worldwide. “I think it affects us all, what happens over there really matters for the next four years over here,” said Sydney resident Luke Heinrich.

New York-based Human Rights Watch, one of the world’s leading civil rights groups, warned about the need to reserve judgment on the results until every vote is counted. With a very high number of mail-in ballots this year because of the Covid-19 pandemic, full tallies are expected to take days in some states.

Executive director Kenneth Roth said premature declarations of victory were dangerous.

“Autocrats might be perfectly happy to undermine democracy in the United States by welcoming a premature declaration of victory,” he said.

China, whose relations with the United States have sunk to their worst in decades under Trump, said the election was a domestic affair and it had “no position on it”.

Chinese social media users, however, were quick to mock the failure of the U.S. electoral system to deliver a quick and clear result.

“Whether he wins or loses, his final mission is to destroy the appearance of American democracy,” one user on China’s Twitter-like Weibo platform wrote on Wednesday.

“Let Trump be re-elected and take the U.S. downhill,” another wrote.

In Nigeria, one leading politician, Senator Shehu Sani, said the uncertainty in the United States was reminiscent of Africa.

“Africa used to learn American democracy, America is now learning African democracy,” he tweeted to his 1.6 million followers.

Sports / Ajayi’s Superb Block Not Enough To Save Baggies From Defeat by Aguskid: 3:32pm On Nov 03, 2020
Semi Ajayi made what could easily pass as the block of the season but couldn’t save West brom from a 2-0 defeat against Fulham at Craven Cottage.

Ajayi has been a mainstay for the Baggies and played a prominent role in their promotion from the Championship last season.

West brom were yet to win a game in the 2020/2021 season but it was the Cottagers who smiled away with the three points and coincidentally their first win of the campaign courtesy first half goals from Bobby De Cordova-Reid and Ola Aina. The win takes Fulham a spot above West brom on the Premier League table after seven matches this season so far.

Politics / BREAKING: FG Denies Generating ‘no-fly’ List Of #endsars Protesters by Aguskid: 3:13pm On Nov 03, 2020
The Federal Ministry of Interior made this known in a tweet on Tuesday in reaction to a media report by an online publication.

The Federal Government has debunked claims that it generated a ‘no-fly’ list of Nigerian youths and persons who took part in the #EndSARS protests against police brutality and extra-judicial killings in the country.

The Federal Ministry of Interior made this known in a tweet on Tuesday in reaction to a media report by an online publication.

The publication alleged that the Nigerian authorities have started collating a no-fly list of Nigerians that energised the #EndSARS protest last month.

Reacting, @MinOfInteriorNG wrote, “The Ministry of Interior did not, has not and will not generate any no-fly list. Ignore fake news, please!”

It was earlier reported that the Nigeria Immigration Service on Monday prevented a promoter of the #EndSARS movement, Modupe Odele, from travelling.

Although the officers did not disclose the reason for their action, it is believed that the action was taken because of her alleged role in the #EndSARS protests.

Odele, had through her Twitter handle, @Mochievous, mobilised her 219,000 followers during the protests.

She had also offered free legal aid to persons who were unjustly arrested during the demonstrations.

Confirming the development in a newsletter sent out on Monday, the lawyer said she was on her way to the Maldives to celebrate her birthday when she was accosted by immigration officers.

Odele said she was detained while her passport was seized by the officers and she was made to miss her flight.

The revelation sparked outrage on Twitter with thousands calling on the authorities to stop harassing Odele.

A former Minister of Education, Oby Ezekwesili, said she has written the National Security Adviser, Babagana Mungono, over the matter.

Ezekwesili tweeted, “Today, I have written to Babagana Mungono, the National Security Adviser of @MBuhari @NGRPresident to immediately retrieve Modupe Odele’s passport from the SSS and publicly apologise for trampling on her freedoms. Maybe they’ll be wise this time. We’ll wait and see.”

Crime / Tragedy As Makeup Artist, Elvina Is Burnt To Death In Bayelsa State By A Jealous by Aguskid: 2:40pm On Nov 03, 2020
Elvina and her pastor were in the house when the unfortunate incident occurred.

Elvina Japheth Abilo, a makeup artist alongside her pastor have been burnt to death after a jealous man who suspected his lover of being unfaithful set her home ablaze in Igbogene-Apie, Yenagoa LGA of Bayelsa State.

According to The Nation, 40-year-old Etifa Obukulubu set his girlfriend, Wilberforce’s home on fire. The incident happened on Saturday, October 31, at about 3am.

Pastor Henry, who is said to be working with New Baptist Church, and his female assistant, Elvina, were allegedly putting up in the house, when the unfortunate incident occurred.

It was gathered that Wilberforce vacated her home for the victims, who reportedly came from outside the state on an evangelical mission.

Residents of the community said the suspect, who is a commercial driver, had waited for his girlfriend, Wilberforce, to come home before carrying out the dastardly act.

They claimed the suspect, on sighting her girlfriend with a man and another girl, got angry and set the home ablaze.

“He (suspect) waited for them to enter the house and used fuel to set fire round the house.

But he did not know that Wilberforce had left the house to go and sleep with another friend.

“It is unfortunate that the pastor and his assistant died in the fire. I was told the pastor was invited to preach in Yenagoa and the suspect’s girlfriend offered her home for them to sleep so that they would leave early the following day,” a source said.

Spokesman for the Bayelsa State Police Command, Asinim Butswat, confirmed the incident and said investigation was on.

Sports / Ex-man United Captain Predicts Solksjaer’s Sack After Arsenal Defeat by Aguskid: 11:21am On Nov 02, 2020
Roy Keane has warned Ole Gunnar Solskjaer that his current Manchester United players will get him sacked.

And speaking after seeing his former side lose 1-0 to Arsenal, he insisted it will happen sooner rather than later.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s second half penalty was enough for the Gunners, as they won at Old Trafford for the first time in 14 years.

The loss means United have been beaten in three of their first four Premier League home games this term.

It also means they are in the midst of their worst start to a campaign in seven years, with United currently down in 15th place in the table.

Duly, Keane was scathing in his assessment of Solskjaer’s side.

“I am really, really worried about Manchester United now,” said Keane, speaking on Sky Sports.

“Where do you want me to start? A lack of energy, of enthusiasm, and a real lack of quality. That really concerned me. No quality, no composure.

“Some of the performances were really poor. Have they turned a corner? It’s the longest corner ever. I am just not convinced by these players.

“I don’t see any leaders out there. There’s a real lack of quality. There’s a long way back for this club.

“I looked at [Marcus] Rashford closely today. His body language was shocking.

“Shrugging his shoulders when things didn’t go his way? You roll your sleeves up when you play for Manchester United.”

However, while it is the players who mainly drew the ire of the Irishman, it is Solskjaer who he has no doubts will be left to pay.

“We were almost building up this season as make-or-break for Ole, but at this moment in time it’s not looking good for him,” he added.

“I scratch my head at players who don’t have enthusiasm for a game of football.

“Sometimes you say ‘there’s no reason to panic’. But the results and performances suggest you should be panicking.

“I judge the players by their actions and I just don’t see it. I never looked at a manager expecting to motivate me, that comes from within.

“Ole will lose his job working with these players, as night follows day – that’s what is going to happen.”

Nairaland / General / The Timing Is Suspicious – NBA President Speaks On FG Move To Regulate Social Me by Aguskid: 10:36am On Nov 02, 2020
Olumide Akpata, The President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), has stated that the timing for the regulation of social media by the federal government is highly suspicious.

Akpata who admitted that there are people who are “irresponsible” in their usage of social media, however ,stated that the timing is wrong in an interview on Channels Television’s “Sunday Politics”.

He Said;

“I struggle with the terms that we bandy around. Like I said, I think the social media space is regulated already.

“Are we saying regulate or shutdown? What are we saying because we hear them using regulate? We hear the minister of Information use the word ‘sanitize.’ I just say to myself, ‘what are we trying to do?’ The timing is suspicious.

“And if we need to tweak the laws here and there, as we amend our laws every day to meet with issues that may come up that were not previously contemplated, we are all well and good.

“But it is not throwing out the baby and the bathwater approach like I suspect that is in contemplation by those who are handling the levers of power today. That is not going to work.”

On setting up of panels of enquiry into the activities of the disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), he stated that the governors have the right to do so even though there are arguments about the legality of the panels.

Akpata Added;

“I think the governors are well within their rights or the power of the law to set up those panels of enquiry for the purpose of determining whether or not the now-disbanded SARS went beyond their remit; whether or not the claims that we have from various Nigerians as to how they were mistreated or illegally treated by SARS are correct.

Crime / Pastor Resigns And Faces $2m Lawsuit After Being Accused Of Peeing On Female Fli by Aguskid: 10:33pm On Nov 01, 2020
A North Carolina pastor accused of urinating on a female passenger during a flight has resigned from his post.

Daniel Chalmers, a pastor, was on board an Oct. 12 Detroit-bound flight from Las Vegas when he urinated on a 28-year-old passenger- a Detroit resident (pictured below).

The victim “woke up feeling something warm on her body and when she looked up to her right, she observed Mr. Chalmers standing next to her shaking his exposed penis,” read the police report. “(She) stated that she then noticed that Mr. Chalmers urinated on her and she started screaming

According to the report, the police then asked the suspect whose breath smelled of alcohol, what he did.

“I peed on her,” Chalmers allegedly said, according to the report.

“I thought I was going to the bathroom.”

Chalmers’ blood-alcohol content was .017 upon testing, according to the Winston-Salem Journal.

The victim has now filed a $2 million civil lawsuit.

On October 27, the police arrested Chalmers and he has now been charged to court.

Before his arrest, he was a pastor at Catch The Fire Raleigh-Durham church owned by Murray Smith and Ash Smith.

Chalmers and his wife (pictured below), Shara Lea Chalmers, also lead ‘Love Wins Ministries’ in Raleigh, which “has no official connection” to Catch the Fire Raleigh-Durham, the Smiths said.

On Friday October 30, he resigned from his role.

He “expressed grief and horror” to his fellow pastors at his Raleigh-Durham church before abruptly resigning Friday, according to Catch The Fire’s senior leaders, Murray Smith and Ash Smith.

When confronted by the Smiths as to why he didn’t address the issue earlier, he claimed he was horrified “over his actions and the effects on his fellow passenger,” according to their statement.

Before his resignation he was in charge of communications projects and some teaching jobs at the church.

“Catch The Fire Raleigh-Durham was shocked and saddened to learn (on Oct. 27) about Chalmers’ arrest in connection with the Oct. 12 incident,” read the Smiths’ statement.

The Gers showed great strength in the early stages and just six minutes into the encounter, they created the first goalscoring chance. Cedric Itten found space on the right, cut the ball back for Ryan Kent but his near-post shot was blocked by Kirk Broadfoot.

He soon had his effort from 15 yards kept off, before Nigeria’s Aribo struck a scorching half-volley which went inches over the crossbar.

In the 18th minute, Borna Barisic’s free-kick was met by Connor Goldson in the box but Ross Millen had his hand above his head and the ball clearly struck it – prompting the referee Andrew Dallas to award a penalty.

Captain Tavernier stepped up to beat goalkeeper Danny Rogers for his tenth goal of the season.

They almost doubled their lead in the 35th minute, albeit, Goldson’s header from Tavernier’s corner kick sailed just over the crossbar.

Aribo came close to doubling his team’s advantage but his deflected shot from 18 yards wriggled past the goal post.

In the second half, Rangers continued from where they left off as they searched endlessly for a second goal.

Scott Arfield had his shot blocked from Ryan Kent’s cross before, in the next attack, Alfredo Morelos’ turn and shot in the box hit a defender and went out for a corner kick.

In the closing stages, Killie regrouped in their quest for a late equaliser, nevertheless, that proved futile as Gerrard’s men left Rugby Park with all three points.

Aribo was replaced in the 66th minute by Steven Davis, while his compatriot Leon Balogun was an 86th-minute replacement for Morelos. South African Bongani Zungu midfielder who is on loan from Amiens, was not listed for the low-scoring game.

For Kilmarnock, Congo DR midfielder Aaron Tshibola was handed a starter’s role before he was replaced by compatriot Youssouf Mulumbu with 12 minutes left to play. Nicke Kabamba was substituted for Eamonn Brophy in the 74th minute as Congolese defender Clevid Dikamona was axed for the tie.

Thanks to this win, Rangers remain at the summit of the Scottish top-flight log with 35 points from 13 outings. They travel to Portugal for a date with Benfica in Thursday’s Europa League Group D showdown.

Nairaland / General / Mexican President Slams European Coronavirus Lockdown Measures by Aguskid: 8:05pm On Oct 28, 2020
Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador on Wednesday blasted European countries for adopting strict lockdowns to stem the spread of coronavirus, suggesting they smacked of authoritarianism.

Germany and France were on Wednesday preparing to announce restrictions approaching the level of spring’s blanket lockdowns as COVID deaths across Europe surged.

National or local authorities have already imposed nighttime curfews in several European countries, including France, Spain, Italy and the Czech Republic.

Speaking at a regular news conference, Lopez Obrador voiced regret at the measures being taken in Europe and urged governments to show more faith in their populations.

“What it expresses is an authoritarian urge by the authorities, by the government, with all due respect, on the part of those who opt for this,” he said when asked if Mexico could adopt tougher measures to halt rising coronavirus cases.

“Curfews aren’t a sign of faith in people. It’s putting yourself above as authority and seeing citizens as children, like they don’t understand. Not even in its worst moments did Europe have these curfews and all these measures.”

Mexico has officially registered over 901,000 coronavirus cases and 89,800 deaths, though authorities admit the number of cases and the death toll are likely significantly higher.

The government has warned infections are rising in parts of Mexico and asked the public to adhere to social distancing norms and avoid large crowds as traditional celebrations near that annually attract hundreds of thousands of people.

Late last week, the northern border state of Chihuahua returned to the highest phase of coronavirus alert.

Lopez Obrador called on Mexicans to practice personal hygiene, social distancing and act responsibly. “And no to using coercive measures,” he said. “This is not resolved with that.”

Crime / American Jailed For Attempt To Overthrow Vietnam Government Says He Was ‘kidnapp by Aguskid: 7:51pm On Oct 28, 2020
A U.S. citizen sentenced last year to 12 years in a Vietnamese jail for “attempting to overthrow the state” spoke of his 27-month detention at a Zoom news conference on Wednesday, after he was released and returned to his home in California last week.

Michael Nguyen, who was born in Vietnam in 1964 and lived in the United States since childhood, was detained in July 2018 on suspicion of anti-government activities, including alleged incitement of protesters to attack government offices with Molotov cocktails and slingshots, state media reported at the time.

“I was essentially kidnapped, myself and three others, taken off a bus,” Nguyen, the father of four daughters, said of his detention. “No reason was given to me. No credentials were presented to me. I was blindfolded, handcuffed and put into a car by people in civilian clothes.”

He said he was interrogated “for 16 hours at a time for days.”

His trial came nearly a year after his capture, during which time he had no access to a lawyer, Nguyen said. The day before the trial he was provided a public defender “who was given a stack of paper more than 12 inches tall.”

“They had written out a statement for me to sign and the public defender’s main job was to get me to sign a statement of words that were not even my own,” Nguyen said.

When he tried to speak, he was stopped in court. “They silenced me,” he said.

Nguyen’s wife, Helen, attended U.S. President Donald Trump’s State of the Union speech last year as a guest of U.S. Representative Katie Porter, a California Democrat who hosted the Zoom news conference.

His release comes ahead of Vietnam’s announcement this week that U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo will visit Vietnam on Thursday and Friday as part of a tour of Asia.

Hanoi said Pompeo’s visit will mark the 25th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries, who fought a long war in the 1960s and ‘70s that badly divided the United States.

Vietnam released Nguyen on “humanitarian grounds” last Wednesday and he was initially flown to South Korea where he made contact with his family, Porter told the news conference.

Nguyen was convicted under “a broad statute” concerning the overthrow of the state, Porter said.

Nguyen declined to disclose further details of his imprisonment and release at Thu Duc Prison, saying it could affect the cases of other foreigners who remain jailed in Vietnam.

Vietnam has previously freed imprisoned political activists before the end of their sentences, provided they permanently leave the country.

Nguyen’s release was not reported in Vietnam’s state media.

It has been revealed that as many as ten prisoners who escaped from Benin prisons have been nabbed again.

According to The Nation, ten of the 1,993 inmates of Oko Correctional Centre on Airport Road, Benin and the Benin Correctional Centre on Sapele Road, who escaped on October 19 after jailbreaks, immediately returned to crime and were re-arrested by the police.

Edo Commissioner of Police, Babatunde Kokumo, Wednesday paraded the 126 suspected criminals, including the ten escapees, arsonists and looters of COVID-19 palliatives at the state’s police headquarters in Government Reservation Area (GRA), Benin.

The ten re-arrested male escapees from Benin and Oko correctional centres are Emmanuel Udoh, Friday Etim, Victor Akpotor, Lucky Precious, Osarumen Enoragbon, Patrick Eguavoen, Abraham Matthew, Endurance Ifobuow, Mohammed Adamu and Henry Atadi.

Kokumo said: “We have commenced actions against the criminal elements. It will interest you to know that ten of the criminal elements who escaped from Oko Correctional Centre on Airport Road, Benin and the Correctional Centre on Sapele Road, Benin were also arrested. One of them, after having escaped from Oko correctional centre, ran back to his village on the same day, to kill the person who stood as prosecution witness in the case that took him to the correctional centre. He has been arrested and he is among the suspects.

“Another group of three escapees from the correctional centre in Benin also went ahead to snatch a Lexus Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV). Three of them met at the correctional centre and they were caught by the police.

“A set of two escapees equally stole a Toyota Camry car. They also met at the correctional centre. They were arrested by Okada Division of Edo State Police Command. We have a total of ten escapees.

“The guns were also recovered from the criminal elements. Anybody who is armed with weapon of destruction is no longer embarking on a peaceful protest. We want to assure the good people of Edo State that the police have the capacity to provide adequate security for their lives and property. For that reason, we are dominating the public space.

“The stolen arms and ammunition regrettably will be unleashed on the members of the public. We are leaving no stone unturned to ensure that there is total safety. Edo residents should go about their lawful businesses without fear of being molested and without fear of criminals coming to wreck violent attacks.”

Edo commissioner of police also stated that it was lawful for citizens to protest, but he declared that they should not opt for violence or criminal activities.

He said: “The #EndSARS protests turned gory, bloody, lawless and were hijacked by hoodlums and criminal elements who embarked on destruction of property, arson, breaking and stealing, burglary, raping women, killing policemen on their gory paths to destruction, freeing convicted criminals and felons, while some of them got engaged in total brigandage. It was very clear that the criminal elements actually hijacked the #EndSARS protests.

“Peaceful protest is seen as a means of registering meaningful displeasure, but what we saw was #EndSARS protests that were hijacked by criminal elements and brigands. Some police stations were razed, arms and ammunition were carted away, warehouses were vandalised and looted, individuals were violently attacked for no just cause, unprovoked attacks on innocent citizens and unprovoked attacks on policemen who were discharging their statutory duties and responsibilities were embarked upon.

“We have a clear directive of the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Adamu, to put an end to all forms of violence, arson, lawlessness and to reclaim the public space, as well as to restore the confidence of members of the public in our (police’s) ability and capacity to restore peace.

“I join the IGP to say loud and clear that enough is enough. We will mobilise all resources (human and non-human) and all police operational assets to ensure that we bring back peace to the land, where the law-abiding citizens can go about their lawful businesses, without fear of being attacked by hoodlums.”

Kokumo also disclosed that five AK-47 rifles, two locally-made exhibit guns, one locally-made gun, one Lexus 330 SUV, with registration number: KWL 205 AZ, one Toyota Camry saloon car, with registration number: LSD 231 GD, two bags of 50kg and one bag of 25kg rice and 24 crates of assorted drinks were.
