Health / Sickle Cell Anaemia - Genetic Causes Of Sickle Cell Diseases by airowblog: 6:48pm On Feb 02, 2016 |
Below are Genetic causes of Sickle cell disease
•MUTATION: sickle cell gene mutation probably
arose spontaneously in different geographic
areas, as suggested by restriction endonuclease
analysis. These variants are known as
Cameroon,
Senegal, Benin Republic, Bantu and Saudi-
Asian.
Their clinical importance springs from the fact
that some of them are associated with higher
HBF
level, e.g; Senegal and Saudi-Asian variants,
and
tend to have milder disease.
•HETEROZYGOUS: in people heterozygous for
Hgbs (carriers of sickling Haemoglobin), the
polymerization problems are minor, be because
the normal allele is able to produce over 50% of
the haemoglobin.
HOMOZYGOUS: in people homozygous for Hgbs,
the presence of long chain polymers of Hbs
distort the shape of the red blood cell from a
smooth doughnut-like shape to ragged and full
of
spikes, making it fragile and susceptible

Acute chest syndrome (ACS) is a living related complication of sickle cell diseases that can lower the levels of oxygen in the blood and can be life- threatening. SYMPTOMS OF ACUTE CHEST SYNDROME: • Wheezing or Coughing • Rapid or laboured breathing • Fever of 101.3F degrees (38.5 degree centigrade) or above • Acute Chest pain. CAUSES OF ACUTE CHEST SYNDROME: • INFECTIONs : infections from viruses or small atypical organisms (Chlamydia and Mycoplasma) is the most common cause of the oxygen deprivation that leads to acute chest syndrome. • BLOCKAGE OF BLOOD VESSELS: blockages in the blood vessels that cut off oxygen in the lungs.....continue >>> www.rowlandokonko.com/2016/02/Sickle-Cell-Disease-Acute-Chest-Syndrome-Symptoms-and-Cause-of-ACS.html?m=0 |

Education / Solution, suspension, colloids And Solvents Definition And Differences by airowblog: 9:05pm On Jan 29, 2016 |
Good day my awesome readers of Rowland
Okonko's Education Arena. Today I will write on
Colloids, Suspension, Solvents.
COLLOIDS
Colloid can be also refers as False solution or
colloidal solution. In colloid the individual solute
particles are larger than the particles of the true
solution. True solution is when solute particles
dissolve such that they are able to get in between
the solvent particles, usually the resultant
mixture in true solution is Homogeneous.
Example is the aqueous solutions of sodium
chloride. Colloid and true solution particles are not
large enough to be seen by the naked eye.
In a colloidal or false solution, the liquid solvent is
more appropriately known as the Dispersion
Medium and the solid solute particles constitute
the Dispersed substance..... Continue>>>

Ion when dissolved in water. There are two
classes of acids • Organic Acids, Examples ÷ •
Ethanoic acid (from vinegar) • Fatty acid (from
fats and oil) • Citric acid(from lime and lemon) •

Celebrities / Gaseous Exchange In Human Beings (respiration) by airowblog: 7:34pm On Jan 20, 2016 |
Welcome, today I shall write on respiration. Air enters the body either through the mouth or the nostrils (external openings leading to the nasal cavity). The mouth and the naval cavity opens into the pharynx. Pharynx is a short passageway, which branches at the end in two directions. One leads to the digestive tract, and the other to the larrynx (voice box) and the lower air pathways. Glottis is the entrance to the larynx. During swallowing, a flap (epiglottis) covers the glottis to prevent food and liquid from entering the air pathways. When the glottis opens, air enters the larynx. The larynx leads to the trachea (wind pipe) which branches into two bronchi (singular: bronchus), the air tubes that enter the lungs. Each bronchus branches repeatedly within the lungs to form smaller air tubes. All these air tubes are kept open by incomplete rings of cartilage to allow air flow. The smaller air tubes are called bronchioles. Very fine branches of the ...... More >>>www.rowlandokonko.com/2016/01/gaseous-exchange-in-human-beings.html?m=0 |

inheritable characteristics of an individual are

Education / Details About Sickle-cell Anaemia by airowblog: 9:12pm On Jan 17, 2016 |
Sickle-cell anaemia is usually a fatal disease caused by the formation of abnormal haemoglobin S instead of the normal haemoglobin A. Haemoglobin is a protein, a complex molecule made up of amino acids. Both haemoglobin A and S molecules are alike except in one amino acid. This difference in structure is due to a mutation in the gene for haemoglobin. In the mutated gene, one of the base codes on the DNA that should read as the amino acid, glutamic acid, has changed to read as another amino acid, valine, instead. As a result of this change in structure, haemoglobin S is less soluble than the normal haemoglobin A. The haemoglobin S molecules tend to clump causing the red blood cells to become 'sickle-shaped'. This results in .....More click >>> www.rowlandokonko.com/2016/01/details-about-sickle-cell-anaemia.html?m=0 |

Celebrities / Care Of The Skin by airowblog: 1:51pm On Jan 15, 2016 |
Today I shall write on the care of our skin. The
skin is in direct contact with our surroundings
and gets dirty easily. We should therefore take
proper care of the skin and keep it clean. A
balance diet containing vitamins A and B2
(riboflavin), and regular exercise are especially
important in maintaining a healthy and supple
skin. We can maintain a healthy skin by taking
sufficient vitamin A in our daily diet. In the tropics
(like Nigeria) we sweat a a lot. Sweat and oily
secretions from the skin make dirt and dust stick
to the skin. The stale sweat gives off an
unpleasant smell. Such a dirty skin becomes an
ideal breeding ground for micro-organisms and.....continue here >>>
