THE MOST HIGH
Saturday, April 28, 2012
Memorize: He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. Psalms 91:1

Read: Psalms 91:1-3

It is important to meditate on the awesomeness of our God. When you catch the revelation of how great our God is, your problems will pale in comparison. Besides being King of kings and Lord of lords, our God is also the Most High. Ecclesiastes 5:8 says He is higher than the highest. He is the Most High because Philippians 2:9 says He was given a name that is above every other name.

If you have a problem that is identified by a name, it is below the name of Jesus and therefore will be solved at the application of the name of Jesus. His throne is also above every other throne because it is in the Heaven of Heavens far above all principalities and powers. In addition, His army is larger and stronger than any other army known to men and spirits.

He controls all the hosts both in Heaven and on earth. He is so powerful that His influence extends to all spheres, whether Heaven, earth or underneath the earth. Having understood that He is the Most High, there are several underlying truths that we can tap into. One of these is that, He has the last say. If you have a case in court and you are declared guilty at the magistrate court, you can go to the court of appeal to seek redress.

From here you can go on to the Supreme Court. If a guilty verdict is maintained at the Supreme Court, then there is trouble. The only one who can save you from such situation is the president. But there is someone who is higher than the president of nations. When Moses asked Pharaoh to release Israel from Egypt, the latter denied knowing Him. But by the time the Lord was through with him, he had to send them packing by night.

Is anyone sitting on your benefits? That fellow shall let you go this season. The Most High can overrule the verdict of presidents. Psalms 33:10-11 says God rubbishes the counsel of the heathen while His counsel stands forever. It does not matter what your enemies are deciding concerning you; simply cancel them and replace them with God's counsel. The Most High can also overrule sickness and diseases. In Mark 2:1-12, the man that was brought through the roof was carried in wearing the toga of impossibility but Jesus overruled the sickness and he returned home healed.

PRAYER POINT: Lord, every negative decree against my destiny, turn it around now for my good.

Microsoft re-releases Office for Mac 2011 upgrade after fixing bugs
Five days after yanking SP2 from its auto-update servers, Microsoft reissues patched version
What's this?
Microsoft yesterday re-released Office for Mac 2011 Service Pack 2 (SP2) after fixing a bug that wormed into the original update.

Last Friday, three days after it first issued Office for Mac 2011 SP2, Microsoft yanked the upgrade from its automatic update service when it acknowledged a bug had corrupted the Outlook database on some machines.

In a post on the Office for Mac blog yesterday, Microsoft said the revised SP2 "fixes a number of issues," including the database corruption problem.

While SP2 offered improvements for several applications in the suite, most targeted the Outlook email client bundled with the upper-end retail edition, Home and Business, as well as the academic and enterprise versions.

The new SP2 will repair any databases corrupted by the original upgrade, said Microsoft in a support document, which also spelled out tips for migrating AppleScript and Autocorrect lists to new folder destinations.

Although Microsoft's support forums do not yet include messages from users who have applied the SP2 re-release, customers have not been shy about commenting on last week's gaffe.

"I'm really upset with this SP2 update," said someone identified as "ggruda" in a message added to a long support thread Tuesday. "Who has the time to go through all the BS to get their database rebuilt and get Outlook running again? I'm looking for an alternative."

All Office for Mac 2011 users will be offered the revised SP2, including those who had downloaded the original April 12 version.

Microsoft has been forced to yank, then re-release, updates before. The most embarrassing blunders in recent years were in February 2010 when it stopped serving a security update to Windows XP PCs that were crashing with the notorious "Blue Screen of Death," and two years earlier, when Microsoft shut down an update for Windows Vista that crippled systems with endless reboots.

Office for Mac 2011 debuted in October 2010, and is available in two editions for the general public, as well as others for academic and enterprise customers.

Memorize: A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee. Psalms 91:7

Read: Psalms 121:3-8

What a father does goes a long way in affecting the life of a child. Our Heavenly Father does not only neutralize weapons designed against His children, He also protects them from harm. In the 50's while I was still very young, we had mining activities going on in my village and the roads were very narrow. Nigeria was still under colonial rule then. Normally, white men came in a jeep to collect the gold that the miners got.

They were so powerful in those days that the villagers believed that if they killed your child, you have to tell them “thank you” so that you will not be sent to prison. For this reason they were dreaded. One day, my sister and I were returning from the farm when we suddenly heard the sound of a jeep coming at top speed. My sister immediately grabbed my hand and we both jumped out of its way, landing in an empty mine.

We barely escaped the jeep but before we could heave a sigh of relief, we found ourselves before a snake. Because our Father can preserve lives, I lived to tell the story. Jeremiah 32:27 says because He is the God of all flesh, there is nothing He cannot do. He controls all humans and animals. Is the enemy tormenting your life using a particular animal - snake, cat, wall gecko, owl, rat or any bewitched bird?

The God of all flesh will frustrate that enemy today. Luke 1:37 says all things are possible with Him. Sometime ago, a child less than two months old was brought to me. The parents said he had a hole in the heart and doctors were set to perform an operation on it. Perplexed, I asked: “What kind of situation is this?” Just before I prayed, God reminded me that He can do anything.

So I told the Lord to either close up the hole or give the child a brand new heart. A week later, I was told the child had become normal. Praise God! In Luke 10:19, you have been empowered over snakes and scorpions - demonic agents and their activities. God will protect you and defend everything that is yours this season. Have those around you given up hope for your survival? The Lord will intervene and make a way for you. Call on Jesus today!

PRAYER POINT: Father, in accordance with Psalms 121:7, preserve me, my family and my church from every evil.

"Third-party software is usually the vector that security intrusions come through, not the operating system," says Ed Bott, a Windows expert and ZDNet blogger. Flash, Adobe Reader and Java are three of the biggest targets, Bott says. While many programs include their own automatic update checker, Bott urges using a tool like Ninite or Secunia Personal Software Inspector, which automate update checking for all the applications on your computer.

3rd commandment: Use Windows' new security tools (and/or third party software)
Windows 7 includes a number of security controls and tools through its Actions Center (which replaces the Security Center), and other tools are available via the Control Panel, including:
Windows Firewall: With its basic settings, this wards off basic attacks, and you can use its advanced settings for more specific control. There are also third-party firewall programs available.
Microsoft's Microsoft Security Essentials and Windows Defender. These tools secure your computer against viruses, spyware and other malware.
Obviously another option is to invest in third-party security software, like individual anti-virus, anti-spam and other programs, or a security suite, such as Symantec's.

4th commandment: Set up (or remove) user accounts
Historically in Windows, the default account had administrator privileges—meaning that programs capable of taking unwanted insecure actions wouldn't have to first ask the user if they could run. Starting with Vista, Microsoft added User Account Control (UAC), which asked non-administrator users for permission to run certain programs or actions. With Windows 7, UAC still protects systems but less intrusively.

[Can you guess the 15 worst data breaches?]

Even so, managing which user accounts are—and aren't—available contributes to security in the following ways:

Establishes non-administrative user account(s) for each user.
Disables or removes user accounts that aren't used or shouldn't be there.
Disables the "guest" account, unless it's needed. If it is needed, a password should be required for elevating privileges, to prevent unauthorized changes to the system.
Consider renaming the administrator account so that it's not obvious to an intruder. Since this account can't be "locked out," password attacks can be performed indefinitely; changing the name makes the account less of a target.

5th commandment: Set passwords
Set the main Windows password, as well as the Power/Time to lock the system, with a screen saver, and require a password to resume activity.
Also, depending on the sensitivity of information on your system (did someone say "online banking"?), consider password alternatives, such as:

Fingerprint reader
Smartcard reader (contact or contactless)
Biometric facial recognition
RSA software and external token
Password "gesture" (e.g., Android tablets)
Another option is two-factor authentication, such as requiring both a fingerprint and a password.

10 commandments of Windows security
What you need to install, configure and add to ensure security on Microsoft Windows (especially Windows 7) notebooks and PCs

With the introduction of Windows 7, many PC and notebook users may feel more secure than they did using older versions of the Microsoft operating system. Newer OSs have more security features, offer better out-of-the-box security settings and have closed many of the historical security holes. Windows 7, for example, has changed the default User Account Control level so that it's harder for rogue programs to run without first explicitly gaining the user's permission.

[Also read 3 steps to protect your personal data]

However, feeling too secure can be dangerous. With that in mind, here are 10 tips—commandments, if you will—for ensuring your desktop or notebook computer can be used productively as well as safely. Many of the recommended tools are free, and all are affordable—and certainly less expensive than the potential problems of an unsecured computer. Similarly, many will take you only a minute or two to perform—again, far less time than you'd spend recovering from a security problem.

Yes, Windows 8 is on the way; it'll be many years before that version runs on a majority of the installed base. So these tips are focused at the computers you are actually using today—especially Windows 7 computers, though most of the advice also applies to Windows Vista or XP machines.

1st commandment: Start with new hardware
Today's new hardware—motherboards, BIOS, CPUs, hard drives, and the system as a whole—includes more security "baked in," even before the operating system is installed. Examples include Trusted Platform Modules (TPM), which embed cryptographic security directly into the hard drive or other component, Unified Extensible Hardware Interface (UEFI) firmware instead of the traditional BIOS, and Intel's vPro security and management technologies. For example, machines with UEFI and TPM will, as part of each boot-up, check the computer's firmware and boot-up binaries to confirm they have not been infected with malware.
If you are working with an existing machine, consider doing a fresh install of the operating system, after completing one (or several) full backup. Ideally, the operating system would be the newest version rather than what was previously installed. (Products like LapLink's PC-Mover can reduce the effort of saving and migrating settings and even application software—although applications should be freshly installed if possible, as well.)

Even if you're working with an existing machine, consider swapping in new hard drives that include built-in encryption. Drives that support the OPAL Storage Specification standard enable companies to manage encrypted drives from multiple vendors—and have also helped reduce the extra cost for an encrypted drive from $100 to nearly zero. After-market drives often include migration tools to speed and simplify a drive swap.

If a self-encrypted drive isn't an option, look at using full-disk encryption software, such as Windows' BitLocker (available only on Enterprise or Ultimate Windows Vista, 7 or cool or a third-party tool.

2nd commandment: Use current OS versions and automatically get OS and application updates
If you aren't using the most current commercial version of the operating system, it's time to upgrade. Additionally, make sure you set the software to automatically apply updates (not just the OS, but all applications) and periodically turn off the computer, which is when many updates are auto-applied. An appalling number of security breaches occur because applications lack important security fixes that have been available for a year or more.
The computer vendor may also include helpful update tools. For example, Lenovo includes an update process that is designed to show all BIOS and driver updates available for that particular model. You can also manually start the update-check apps process. This may take several cycles, particularly for the first time around, if some updates require other updates.

Intel launches first chips of new generation

Intel says PCs with chips from its new generation of processors, featuring a revolutionary design, will be available this week.
The new generation, code-named "Ivy Bridge," is the first to be made with a "3-D" structure. Miniatures fins jut out of the plane of the chip, letting Intel cram more features into the same space. That means the chips can be faster while consuming less power.
Analysts have called it one of the most significant developments in silicon transistor design since the integrated circuit was invented in the 1950s.
The first chips off the production line are destined for powerful desktop computers. Intel Corp. hopes to have them in laptop computers in time for the "back to school" shopping season.

Facebook buys AOL patents from Microsoft for $550M

Facebook is paying Microsoft $550 million in cash for a chunk of the patent portfolio that Microsoft recently acquired from AOL.
This is all part of Facebook's effort to fatten up its patent war chest as it prepares to go public next month and seeks stave off potential litigation. It's currently embroiled in a big patent fight with Yahoo, and last month, Facebook struck a deal with IBM to purchase some 750 of its patents, which cover "software and networking" technologies.
Under today's deal, Facebook is buying about 650 AOL patents and patent applications, plus a license....

Microsoft sets up a company to work on open source software

SOFTWARE TINKERER Microsoft has launched a subsidiary to deal with open source software in a bid to show it can keep up with contemporary software vendors.
Microsoft Open Technology will have Jean Paoli as its president, with the outfit working on HTML5, HTTP 2.0, MongoDB and Node.js as part of its bid to invest time and effort in open standards. The firm also said it will provide "open source building blocks" for interoperable cloud services, which could suggest it might partially open up its Windows Azure cloud technology to compete with the rapidly growing Openstack alliance.
Paoli's blog post contained statements that many open-source followers would have found unimaginable coming from Microsoft even five years ago. Paoli said, "It is important to note that Microsoft and our business groups will continue to engage with the open source and standards communities in a variety of ways, including working with many open source foundations such as Outercurve Foundation, the Apache Software Foundation and many standards organizations."
Microsoft has in many ways finally bitten the bullet and realised that it cannot simply ignore open source software and push its own closed source software that adheres only to whatever 'standards' it sets. Recently Microsoft's contributions to the Linux kernel, a piece of software that was once dubbed "a cancer" by Steve Ballmer, had surpassed that of Canonical.
According to Paoli, the formation of Microsoft Open Technologies will speed up the firm's releases of open source software. While Microsoft's latest efforts to work itself into the open source community should be commended, long standing open source watchers will wait to see how Microsoft integrates into a community where it can't boss everyone else around to get its way

Understand your home network settings
Home networking is easier and more popular than ever, but there are still some terms and settings that can be confusing. Learn more about your network and how to tweak it.
Home networking is almost everywhere these days, and most of us have had to learn the basics the hard way. Lost connections, hacked passwords, and interminable calls to customer support can all cause headaches, and while there's no foolproof way to avoid any of them, it's still true that knowledge is power. I'll cover the basics of networking and show you how to change your settings.
You and your router
Your router is a piece of hardware that takes the internet connection provided by your Internet service provider (ISP -- the company you pay every month) and splits it up, or "routes" it to different devices using wires or Wi-Fi. You'll need to access the router in order to tweak your network settings. There are far too many brands and models for me to try to explain them all in detail, but they do share quite a bit in common. Just remember that you may encounter slightly different terminology or tools; if you get lost, check with your router's manual, online help, or -- if you're really stuck -- customer service line.
Presumably, you've already set up your router using the manufacturer's instructions and information provided by your ISP. You'll need to dig up those instructions and information, so if it's not available, check online or contact customer service for a refresh. Just tell them you're setting up your router and they'll tell you what you need to know.
Most modern routers use Web-based administration tools, so fire up your favorite browser and direct it to the address that came with your router. (Two common addresses are 192.168.1.1 and 10.0.0.1, but yours may be different.) You'll need to supply a username and password; again, this should be supplied by the router's manufacturer, but if you can't find it or you changed it and then forgot it, you will need to reset the router to its factory settings, but you should really only do this if your network isn't running properly, as it will require you to run through the setup procedures all over again.
Basic network settings
Once you've accessed your router, you can explore your options. You can access these settings in your router's menu typically by selecting Internet settings, Basic settings, or something similar.
Your IP (short for Internet protocol) address is kind of like a phone number -- it's a unique identifier. Some ISPs provide users with their IP address dynamically, and it can change from time to time as users disconnect and reconnect to the network. Other ISPs provide users with locked-in IP addresses; these should be entered when setting up your router and shouldn't change. The same is true for the subnet mask and gateway IP address, each of which are used to connect to your ISP.
If your IP address is like your phone number, your DNS (domain name server) addresses are like phone books. ISPs usually provide you with two or three to enter as you set up your router, but there are now many other free DNS options -- see how to find out of one of these could work better for you here.
The MAC address is a unique identification number attached to networking hardware, somewhat similar to a serial number. You shouldn't have to change this unless you get instructions from customer service to do so.
Security

There are two layers to home network security: Keeping unauthorized users from accessing your internet connection and protecting the machines connected to your network from outside intrusion.
If your network is all wired, you should have no problem with unauthorized access to your connection (unless someone sneaks in and plants a cable while you're out, but this isn't a common problem). Wireless password protection is key to keeping wireless users from poaching access and potentially getting you in trouble with illegal activity. Your best bet is to use a long string of random characters, as most devices just require one-time entry for network passwords. You should also change it frequently, especially if you live in a dense neighborhood or suspect that a neighbor may be trying to crack your security. Changing it is simple; just select Wireless setup or Wi-Fi settings and change your password from there. If you've never changed it from when you first installed it, do so now.
All open networks are vulnerable to intrusion, and yours is likely no different. Most routers come with built-in firewalls, which are barriers to outside access. You are almost certainly better off leaving your router's firewall settings alone, unless if you hear otherwise from a customer service representative from your ISP.
Connecting computers and other devices
Of course, the router's main purpose is to connect your computers and other devices (like game systems, smartphones, tablets, and so on) to the Internet. Most use DHCP (dynamic host configuration protocol) to assign local IP addresses to the devices on the network, and this works pretty well for most uses.
Sometimes, though, it's better to have one device (like a networked printer or hard drive) use the same local IP address at all times. Different routers use different language to access this feature, but it's not so hard. Look for LAN settings, Local Network Settings, DHCP Settings or browse through your interface until you see DHCP or Address Reservation or something similar. If in doubt, check the manual or customer service before making changes. To add a permanent address to a device, you'll need to find that section in your interface, then select Add device or whatever your router says. This should bring up a list of devices connected to your router, and it may take some effort to figure out which one is the one you want. Computers are usually pretty straightforward, but your best bet is to check the network settings of the device to see what its MAC address or current IP address is, as that should be unique. Select that device, then add a permanent IP address and a nickname to help you remember it in the future.

DHCP and address reservation
Those are the basics of home networking. Of course, there's much, much more you can do, but this should help with basic security and connection issues.
