Death watch: Microsoft to end support for Windows XP in 2 years

The end is coming. Repent!
That was the message from Microsoft as it reminded consumers that its support for Windows XP SP3 and Office 2003 will end on April 8, 2014. According to Microsoft marketing director Stella Chernyak, that means the software giant will nix security updates, non-security hot-fixes and technical support after that date. So let the countdown begin. You now have less than two years to get your affairs in order and hightail it to more current software.

Chernyak commented in a blog post that "Windows XP and Office 2003 were great software releases in their time, but the technology environment has shifted. Technology continues to evolve and so do people's needs and expectations."
This should come as no surprise, since the announcement is consistent with Microsoft's 2002 support lifestyle policy that offers a minimum of 10 years of support (at least five years of mainstream support and five additional years of extended support). But there's a large amount of users still using XP up to SP3, and not everyone will be happy about having to upgrade. And enterprise deployment can take anywhere between 18 to 32 months from business case through full deployment, so those who want to stick with Windows and Office should begin planning, well, now.
The company recommends switching to Windows 7 and Office 2010 rather than waiting for Windows 8. Microsoft wants to facilitate that migration and is thus offering a free download of Windows 7 and Office 2010.

For Nigeria to achieve her vision of effective broadband services, the nation’s transmission backbones must align to become interoperable.

This was the advice of the Chief Operating Officer of Phase3 Telecom, Mr. Olusola Teniola, while speaking at the eWorld Broadband Forum 2012 held in Lagos recently.

He noted that though Nigeria currently has three major optic fibre backbones, they were not designed with an open access architecture in mind, making it difficult for them to work together. This situation, he noted, was a drawback on the efforts by government to further broadband penetration in the country.

Teniola stated that Phase3 Telecom envisaged this challenge and subsequently decided to design an open access network in partnership with Dancom ( a subsidiary of The Dangote Group) right from inception, currently covering over 3,000Km nationwide, adding that it is the basis for the company’s provision of services to all operators today in the Nigerian marketplace and beyond.

He added that the recent launch of 3.75G networks by some Mobile Network Operators in Nigeria suggested a mobile broadband eco-system was already in place adding that this might kick-start the development of other related services.

“With terrestrial networks already in place in a piece-meal form, these can provide the platform in ensuring speeds of 256Kbps and greater are available on devices that can support broadband applications. This eco-system is the beginning of a wider broadband eco-system that may transpire and include another range of broadband applications from the office desk or from our homes, which will complement the reach and presence of an always-on high speed internet access paradigm,” Teniola said.

According to him, this development showed that the Nigerian telecom landscape is one driven by a mobile operator’s choice of technology, innovation and investment as against the normal value chain that depicts a strong fixed line incumbent protected by a National Regulator and other licenced operators providing their services piggy-backed on a National Backbone facility.

He added that the drive to Long Term Evolution, one of the latest mobile services, demonstrates this when one considers that the broadband and next generation of the future is now demonstrating scenarios where consumers are hooked up with 100Mbps download speeds to the home.

He advised that the regulator and the entire industry must work together to define a proper programme that will show Nigeria the way, adding that Phase3 Telecom had already taken right steps with its open access fibre network.

“A broadband eco-system that relies purely on networks to evolve without careful planning is bound to fail both in terms of regulation and implementation,” Teniola stated

According to him, some level of stability at the backbone layer is also mandatory to serve as a reminder of its being a critical asset within a broadband eco-system that is not subjected to multifaceted ideas and creates more complexity in an already complex environment.

Computer Science is Essential for Everyone

The New York Times today has a piece on by Randall Stross titled Computer Science for the rest of us discussing the growing movement to have computer science courses that build’s on Jeannete Wing’s paper on computational thinking. I would argue that it’s not computer science for the “rest of us” but for everyone. From basic science to the humanities, understanding essentials of computer science has become more important to student’s understanding of the world than the calculus is. In fact, while I think calculus certainly has value from the hard to social sciences, its more essential that students have an understanding of computer science.

Indeed, we’ve also seen at Northwestern that combining students focused on computer science with other fields has yielded great dividends. If you look at each of Northwestern’s colleges outside engineering—Journalism, Communications, Music, Education, Arts & Sciences—most disciplines are advancing by being infused with computer science. We’ve had students from each of these schools in our experential NUvention classes Indeed, in areas like journalism and communications, modern journalist can ignore computer science only at their peril. Not only has the internet upended the business models of traditional publications; the tools of analysis and story composition will change from computer science as well. My CS collegues Larry Birnbaum and Kris Hammand started a seminar 4 years ago in concert with the Medill School of Journalism. Graduate Journalism students were paired to with computer scientists to look at new application areas in the evolving face of media. One output of this class has become the company Narrative Science. Narrative Science combines journalistic archetypes with statistical databases to compose stories for the long tail. Narrative started with baseball and softball recaps from box scores and also does earnings reports for some internet financial sites. I was fascinated at the backlash from traditional journalists; and to me this shows how essential it is that journalists get to know computer science as a tool, so it can be approached with understanding rather than fear.

In the social sciences and in the “hard” sciences it’s even more essential. My late, great colleague at Microsoft, Jim Gray, was at the forefront of thinking about what we now talk about as “Big Data”. He talked a lot about how Computer Science was transforming the scientific method; and the need for the two to work together. The book coauthored by Tony Hey, Stewart Tansley, and Kristin Tolle discusses a Fourth Paradigm of science. It starts with understanding computer science in addition to the field of study. It’s clear to me that unversities and research organizations will be able to use computer science and data analysis for their competitive advantage.

This also hit home for me. My daughter is a sophmore taking computer science and government at Wesleyan in Middletown CT. Her summer will be spent at the intersection of both of those understanding based on crawling the web the impact of super pacs and press coverage. She will need to apply what she’s learned in computer science, statistics, as well as political science to assist with new discoveries.

CS is also not just for math geeks; and we’ve seen this in NUvention Web. Students who have joined our teams as political science or communcation studies majors pick up programming and bring the skills from their majors to making their products more impactful.

Friday Poll: Used games a no-go on PlayStation 4?

Dear members,
What if I told you that the next DVD/Blu-ray player you buy will only play newly bought discs? And if you were to buy used, borrow your friends' discs, or rent games, your machine would not play them?

Well, it has been reported that the new Sony PlayStation 4 console (or Orbis as it's said to be called) will not play PlayStation 3 games, and the console will also have anti-used-game measures built in. That means no more playing rental games or borrowing games from your buddy, and of course you can't play pre-owned games! What has been reported is that if you do use secondhand games, you'll have to pay an extra fee. Why all this madness?! It looks like game developers feel like used game sales are choking the industry. To be fair, it was reported earlier this year that Microsoft is considering blocking used games on the next version of the Xbox.

I don't know about you, but to me that's just crazy! My son and I buy used games quite a bit, and it would be a huge setback for both of us if they were to go through with this. I will probably just say no to a newer console, at least until the game prices are lowered, or I'll just refuse to buy a new console and go back to PC gaming until something changes.

So what do you all think about this? Are you willing to buy a console that locks out secondhand games? What do you think will happen to all those game outlets that sell pre-owned games or game rental services. Is their business model doomed? If companies like Sony and Microsoft go through with this, do you think it will have a negative effect on the game industry, or will it have no impact at all, because people will continue to buy new? After the excellent N+ router that came out a few years ago, Belkin has been on a streak of rather mediocre routers, such as the Play or Play Max. But the Advance N900 DB Wireless Dual-Band N+ router is a bit different.
This is the latest router from the company and also its first one that supports the 3 by 3 450Mbps standard on both 2.4GHz and 5GHz simultaneously. This is the reason for the N900 designation, which shows that the router supports the 802.11n specification and provides up to 900Mbps.

In my testing, the N900 DB lived up to expectations, offering top performance when used with 450Mbps clients. When used with regular 300Mbps, the most popular on the market, it was just about average.
The router's two USB 2.0 ports now can host two portable drives at a time to offer decent network storage performance. Its file sharing and media-streaming features are very limited, however, providing no way for users to customize them, other than turning them on or off.
That said, the new Belkin could still be a great deal if it were cheaper. At $200 it just a bit too expensive. You'll find alternatives on the market that offer more. Caution urged as cyber criminals go on the prowl
Computer users told to be wary of virus

The increase in malicious attacks by cyber criminals has forced officials in Dubai to warn computer users of the need to be alert and vigilant at all times.
"Don't connect to wireless network and [when] your computer doesn't have [anti-virus] programme, it's possible to get [a] virus or worm email.
Nick Black, technical manager at Trend Micro,said activities were taking place and they were not targeted at specific networks.
He said a virus from China had been floating around over the last three days and targeting both India and China. Since many Indian firms are based in Dubai, they have been urged to be extra careful.
When asked whether the April Fool's Day virus is making a comeback, Black said it had been five years since the world worried about the havoc created by that virus. Present-day anti-virus software can detect that virus. He, however, cautioned that criminals could indeed create new viruses.
"Deceptive and malicious emails continued to grow in the past year, targeting business users, government agencies and consumers," he said. "Implement email authentication to reduce the incidence of spoofed and forged email, which may lead to identity theft and the distribution of malware and tarnish] your brand reputation."
Any new code of interest will be for around four years and the period when it be at its most dangerous is when it is 10-14 days old.
Cybercriminals are increasingly eavesdropping on wireless connections, including at airports, coffee shops and the library.

Today is World Backup Day, and though it's not a recognized holiday celebrated with praying to the cloud or gifting loved ones with hard drives, it does serve as a good reminder to back up your data. (Not to sound like a nagging mom telling you to eat your vegetables, but backing up your data is good for you. Really. And I'm reminding myself as much as I'm reminding you here.)
Now in its second year, World Backup Day was created by Ismail Jadun, a biology student from Youngstown State in Ohio who saw the need for it after reading comments on the lack of backup awareness on social news site Reddit. "I was just a college student who was looking for something interesting to do," Jadun said. Turns out there was a need for it, too.
A recent Harris Interactive online survey found that only 7 percent of respondents backed up their data on a daily basis, while 23 percent said they performed backups every month. Considering that people create and generate 1.8 zettabytes (!!) of data per year, that puts a lot of info at risk.

Google may be planning to launch a free 5GB cloud-based storage service dubbed "Google Drive" in the third week of April, a tech site reported over the weekend.

The number of cell phone subscriptions grew 20.7 million in January and February to reach just over one billion, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology said, up from 900.4 million in April last year.
