Akwa Ibom State Government has concluded plans to recruit ten thousand youths of the state into various job openings in the agricultural sector to sustain the Agricultural revolution soon to be witnessed in the state.

Governor Udom Emmanuel announced this during an interaction with Leaders of Major Socio-cultural organizations who were at the Government House, Uyo on a solidarity visit.

He said that his administration is committed to laying a solid economic foundation for the future through industrialization and that for a take-off, ten modernized Cassava processing Plant would be established across the state.

He noted that the state is blessed with arable land that tolerates cultivation for all seasons and that he is committed to exploiting the agricultural potentials of the state to its maximum advantage by ensuring that the abundant hectares of land is put to use agriculturally.

Speaking further, Governor Emmanuel disclosed that the employment will give premium to the youths of the state who were earlier sent to the State of Israel for training on mechanized farming and that the move is tilted towards ensuring that indigenes of the state have earned a living rather than begged for it.

"He noted that if we don't plant today, there may not be harvest tomorrow to sustain the people as over-dependence on oil does not do the economy any good."

Governor Emmanuel who used the occasion to decry the spate of falsehood perpetuated by some local tabloid, observed that they have misinformed the people on Government activities through their junk reportage.

He cited the wrong presentation of compensation payment, Tax issue, upgrading of electrical facilities and the recent tribunal verdict as topical issues where the local tabloid have feasted and misinformed the people. He therefore called on the people to discountenance such publications stressing that they are counterproductive to development.

Politics / AKSG To Pay Compensation Using Bio-metric Capturing System by AKSGNewMedia: 1:44pm On Oct 12, 2015
Akwa Ibom State Government has evolved a Bio-Metric Capturing System in the payment of compensation on buildings marked down for demolition along highways to be constructed within the state.

The Commissioner for Works Mr Ephraim Inyang dropped the hint while fielding questions from Government House correspondents, at Onna Local Government Area where he went on road project inspection.

He said that the exercise, which will involve video recording of the process of payment to the beneficiaries, will commence on monday, 12th October 2015 along roads affected by the remodeling work in Eket Local Government Area.

He also disclosed that the first phase of beneficiaries are owners of structures affected by the remodeling project in Eket, Ikot Udom in Ibiono Ibom Local Government Area. The payment will equally be extended to affected roads in Ikot Usop in Mkpat Enin, Okat- Mkpok as well as Awa- Nkana roads in Onna Local Government Area.

On the Tropicana Drainage Construction linking Oron road through Nsikak Eduok Avenue up to Obot Idim, the Works Commissioner hinted that Julius Berger Construction Company, has moved to site and that the project will be completed as scheduled.

Mr Inyang explained that the Bio-Metric System of payment is adopted to check activities of unscrupulous persons who, after collecting their compensation, turn round and threaten Government with litigations. He emphasised that with the Video evidence, such persons would be tracked and brought to book.

Speaking further, Mr Inyang said that construction is progressing at Eket- Ibeno road and that work on Etinan-Eket road dualisation handled by the Chinese Civil Engineering Construction Company(CCECC) will soon commence.

He also stated that the construction giant, Julius Berger and Wizchino Engineering Limited have been mobilised to return to Uyo-Ikot Ekpene road as well as Ndon Eyo-Etinan road and expressed optimism that they will deliver up their work on schedule.

Mr Ephraim Inyang therefore called on the people to cooperate with the contractors at various project sites, and with the officials paying the compensation stressing that the Udom led-administration is working assiduously to deliver concrete democratic dividends to Akwa Ibom people.
Politics / Operation Zero Pothole Commences In Uyo Metropolis by AKSGNewMedia: 12:06am On Oct 11, 2015
The Governor of Akwa Ibom State, His Excellency, Mr. Udom Gabriel Emmanuel, has ordered immediate commencement of operation Zero pot holes on all roads in Uyo metropolis.

The Governor who spoke through the Honorable commissioner of works, Mr. Ephraim Akparawa Inyang-Eyen , during the ministry’s supervision tour of the entire capital city to ascertain the level of damage done on roads in the city following the massive rain fall so far recorded in the State.

During the tour today , the commissioner and his team stopped –over to examine seriously damaged spots like Ukana Offot, Abak Road, IBB Way, Nkemba, Effiong Udo Akpan, Nsentip, Nsit, Atang, Esuene, Udo Eduok, Urua Ekpa and Urua Udofia Streets among others.

Politics / Wole Olanikpekun: Good Lawyer, Umana's Bad Case by AKSGNewMedia: 5:41pm On Oct 10, 2015
Finally, the Akwa Ibom Elections Petitions Tribunal sitting in Abuja, on October 8, 2015 took the final addresses from the Petitioner, as well as the first, second, third & Fourth respondents.

Judgement day is now what we all await to see where the pendulum swings in this most dramatic, I wouldnt say intriguing, political tug-of-war between the All Progressives Congress, APC, candidate, Obong Umana Okon Umana and the incumbent governor, His Excellency, Mr Udom Gabriel Emmanuel of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

Before going into the main issue I want to address herein, let me highlight a little drama that shocked me to my wits end same day. At the departure lounge of the Ibom International Airport, while patiently waiting to board the Abuja bound Arik Air flight, former Deputy Governor, His Excellency, Obong Nsima Ekere arrived with a retinue of aides and associates. I queued alongside others to pay my respect and courtesy.
To my consternation, Obong Ekere with fire in his eyes lynched my obeisance with his utterance. "Whenever you write that your rubbish, don't mention my name or I will come after you" he said. The hysteria and mental concussion of this unprovoked and unwarranted outburst on the countenance of all present was touchable.

I however kept my cool for it was too petty a matter to join issues. I considered myself a Liliputian to this great man and in reality, wasn't worth his irritation in the first place. Let me make some clarifications however. It is not a secret that I am a fan of Obong Nsima Ekere. Every follower of my inputs in social discourse, pre and post 2015 Guber race, knows, I have volumes on him, defending his integrity even when the powers that be were on his jugular and during his political travails. Let me put it on record that, he was never my benefactor, neither was I on his pay roll. I quite clearly know with a good conscience that, even when I believed in his bid for governor, I never negotiated a pay or was never on his pay ledger. I did so, because, as at then, I believed in his well articulated agenda.

When I had cause on grounds of superior arguments from my boss and benefactor, Prince Enobong Uwah to pitch tent with the Udom Is Right movement, I, out of respect, discussed this with him and gave my reason as total loyalty to Prince Uwah, who, at that point had taken an irrevocable stand to swim or sink with Mr Right.

That Obong Ekere as an experienced politician still finds this hard to reconcile with, as betrayed by his unkind rebuke is distressing. Howbeit, I will not, on account of his threat, lose my high esteem for his person and his sterling accomplishments in life. I can only say one thing. If he finds no qualms in turning against his party, the PDP and his benefactor, Senator Godswill Obot Akpabio, I should be given that fair chance, even in hell, to make choices without embittering anyone. Let me say without fear of contradiction: I AM NOT INTIMIDATED AND CANNOT BE COWED BY THREATS, SANS OFFENDING MY CONSCIENCE.

Folks,' I bothered to bring this up because of the needless angst, fury and politics of bitterness that runs a ring around this whole governorship battle. The APC/PDP gulf is so wide that, many have forgotten the old dictum that, THIS IS POLITICS AND NOTHING PERSONAL. IT IS A GAME OF INTERESTS. It is not a genocidal war and playing gangsterism with the election duel as I have observed is the height of desperation.

Now to Chief Wole Olanikpekun SAN, the Lead Counsel of the Petitioner. I giggled, as a wry smile sat on my eyebrow, reading the update of my brother and APC protagonist, Iboro Otongaran on the erudite Senior Advocate. I proceed to lift part of what, Otongaran (as also posted by Ita Awak, Inibehe Effiong and many other APC enthusiats) wrote in a piece mis-titled, "Olanipekun shames Udom’s Dundee United", stating, "Olanipekun was in the house at the FCT High Court, Maitama, to do what he does best, which is to shoot down applications, objections, arguments by the defence to Umana’s petition. Olanipekun’s resumption of his lead role has rubbed faeces on the faces of Udom Emmanuel’s assortment of cub reporters..."

I elect to stop my reference there because the rest, which I find repulsive and indecorous, are, his refrain to name-calling of the Essien Nduesos, Solomon Eyos, and in his words, "...the street gang of Emmanuel Nicholas (aka, White Bom Bom), Uwem Umanah, one Ace, Essien Essien, etc, all of who, he describes with unpalatable terms. All the bile, simply because, they are doing for the respondent, what he(Otongaran) and others in his camp are miserably doing for the petitioner.

Well! Without holding brief for these fortunate lot, who he labelled, "Udom Emmanuel’s assortment of cub reporters...", I make bold to make one fact clear. The indiscriminate taunting of opponents with injurious oration, will ultimately, do nothing, to help Olanikpekun. The gusto with which phyrric victories of winning motions, objections or pleas are celebrated, which in the end game, are immaterial to the substance of the case is what I find nauseating.

Wole Olanikpekun is for me, a very good lawyer saddled with a very bad case. Truth is, the best specialist doctors are said to be Cubans, Indians or Germans. But, just as the best consultant cardiologist will find his skill useless for a corpse in the morgue who died of cardiac arrest, so is a very astute lawyer incapacitated when handling a very bad case. This is Olanikpekun's dilemma, inspite of all the platitudes my brother in Lagos Otongaran will allot to him.

I rest my arguments on the inherent inconsistencies of the petitioners original narrative that, there was no election in Akwa Ibom State. By the final addresses, the following contradictory points conflate into an incontrovertible text: that indeed, there was an election. So what are these irreconcilable postulates by the petitioners as I juxtapose

1.That there was no election in Akwa Ibom State.
Question: So why were they relying on figures of the card readers which proves there was election as tendered in their exhibit?

2. That the petitioner says the 1st respondent did not score the highest number of valid votes.
Question: So why the earlier assertion that there was no election, when you thereafter turnaround to merely disagree with the ascribal of the highest votes cast in the said election?

3. The Petitioner alleged there was no election in Akwa Ibom state.
Question: How come the case was narrowed to submitting that, elections did not take place in 19 Local Government Areas midstream?

There are many other issues, but since the Tribunal has forbidden itself from considering technicalities, I leave them out for the learned team of Justices A.S. Umar, K.O. Dawodu and P.T. Kwahar, to fix and sort out.

But I won't rest this case without asking Chief Olanipekun, why the initial hype of the so-called Forensic Experts became embalmed at the boiling point.

That for me is the anti-climax. Was it a case of self admission that, the forensic report was a scam for which those fraudsters should be charged for perjury and obtaining fees under false pretence? Can I safely assume that, the tender of the forensic report was certified dead on arrival after the counsel to the first and second respondents tore to shreds the speculative adventure of the forensic undertakers?

In summary, I will however not wager a guess on the fate of this petition, but suffice to say as my learned friend would, res ipsa loquitor(THE FACT SPEAKS FOR ITSELF). COURRRRRRRRRT!!!!!

Politics / Umana Brought Fake Fingerprint Experts - Udom by AKSGNewMedia: 9:28am On Oct 10, 2015
Governor Udom Emmanuel of Akwa Ibom State says it was unfortunate that Mr Umana Umana brought in fake experts who knew practically nothing about forensic sciences to inspect the elections material of the April 11, 2015 governorship elections.
Speaking at the Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Abuja, Gov Udom through his lead counsel Mr Paul Usoro SAN Thursday dismissed the forensic evidence tendered by the Guber candidate of the All Progressive Congress, Mr Umana Umana as being unacceptable and of no legal consequence.

In his written address adopted by the tribunal, Mr Usoro submitted that Mr Umana's effort in putting together the finger print analysis to prove that there was no election in Akwa Ibom state on April 11 was an exercise in futility

Usoro adduced reasons why the testimonies of the purported finger prints experts cannot be accepted in law as the persons hired by the petitioner were not certified and at best quacks.

Mr Umana had procured Mr Sanusi Turay, Abdulahi Dauda and Salisu Abdulahi who paraded themselves as “experts”and tendered a joint report which they claimed to have carried out forensic analysis on 129,209 scanned ballot votes in 15 LGAs.

However, in his witness statement on oath, Abdulahi Dauda had claimed to have “bagged an Msc degree in Project Management” from the University of Georgia, Washington, USA. But when he was confronted by Mr Emmanuel’s lawyers that their google search did not turn up any such university, he acknowledged that, indeed, there was no such University of George Washington. Governor Emmanuel's lawyers submit that the forensic "expert" is an impostor and a fraudster.

Mr Emmanuel’s lawyers have asked the judges to dismiss Mr Umana’s petition in its entirety and refuse all the reliefs sought.

Final judgement has been reserved for a latter date.

Politics / #ACTION2015: What UN Secretary General Told Nigerian Governors by AKSGNewMedia: 5:58pm On Aug 24, 2015
#Action2015 is the mobilization of citizens of the world, organisations and diverse social units, by the United Nations, aimed at creating greater awareness of the most urgent threats faced by humanity; poverty, inequality and climate change.

It hinges on the philosophy that decisions taken in 2015 will determine the world's future, and if each unit of individuals and groups contribute definitive action towards achieving the world's developmental goals, their collective influence will shape decision-making critical for the success of those goals.
It is a coalition of over 1950 organisations around the world who are committed to fighting for a better future by ending poverty, tackling inequality and avoiding dangerous climate change. It is truly global and each organisation has different specialties and strengths from grassroots environmental projects to international anti-poverty organisations.
During His address, the United Nation, Secretary General, Mr. Ban Ki Moon told Nigerian Governors the need to work together to establish a revitalized global partnership for development.

Read excerpts Below:

“I am so pleased to begin my visit to Nigeria with you – and it is fitting that I do so. I strongly believe a more prosperous, democratic and secure Nigeria begins with you.
I would like to thank the Governor of Kaduna State for hosting this opportunity to discuss your aspirations for change in Nigeria.
Governors play a fundamental role in the future of this country, the region, the continent – and, indeed, our world. You are among the closest to the people.
You understand their challenges and aspirations. You have the resources and the power to help the people of Nigeria realize the tremendous promise of this great country – on education, on health care, on women’s empowerment, on climate change, on governance, institution-building, security and on rights across the board.
I am here to listen and support you.
Nigeria occupies a central place in the family of nations. As I visit, Nigeria also happens to be serving as President of the Security Council for the month of August. This is yet another reminder of the weight of the regional and global responsibilities you bear.
I am here at a time of challenge – in Nigeria and beyond. Across our world, we see insecurity, inequality, growing divides. Here in Nigeria, you know the challenges all too well – including the rise of extremism and the lack of equal opportunity. I know this is a deep and vital challenge in particular for the Governors of the Northeast, including Borno State, and I commend the work and leadership of Governor Kashim Shettima who is with us. Allow me to also take the opportunity to express my sincere condolences on the passing of the Deputy Governor of Borno State, Alhaji Zannah Umar Mustapha.
This is also a time of hope. I want to commend you and all of Nigeria’s leaders for the peaceful democratic transition of power. Nigeria sent an important signal of hope throughout the continent.
This is also a moment of hope for the world, particularly in the field of development.

Last month, UN Member States met in Addis Ababa and agreed on a new financing for development plan: the Addis Ababa Action Agenda.
Earlier this month, Member States reached agreement on the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. A proud daughter of Nigeria helped shepherd this agreement to its inspiring conclusion -- my special Advisor, Assistant Secretary-General Amina Mohammed.
The outcome document – “Transforming Our World: The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development – includes a bold new set of 17 goals – will be formally adopted by world leaders in New York in September.
In December, governments will meet in Paris to agree on a new far-reaching climate change agreement.
Together these three processes provide an opportunity to put the world on a sustainable pathway fostering human prosperity while protecting our planet.
Local governments have an important role to play in the implementation of the SDGs. Nigeria demonstrated this through its efforts on the MDGs through the Federal Government Conditonal Grants program to States and local governments.
Let me point to five essential ways that you can build on your advances and sustain that momentum.
First, the universal framework will have to be tailored to national circumstances to live up to its promise to be an agenda “of the people, for the people, and by the people” that leaves no one behind.
Sub-national and local governments will play a major role in the national tailoring process and in ensuring that this process is participatory and inclusive.
Second, we need to work together to establish a revitalized global partnership for development. Each of you is crucial for engaging local civil society organizations and the private sector in the implementation of the goals at local level.
Third, in a world of rising inequalities, sub-national and local governments can help ensure that the limited available funds are targeted at the most vulnerable and marginalized who are often hard to reach, in particular ensuring health, education, empowerment and equality for women and girls.
That leads to my fourth point – institutionalizing gender mainstreaming across all government ministries and bodies responsible for implementing agenda 2030, with effective means of implementation and capacities for monitoring progress.
I encourage you to implement national action plans and legislation on gender equality and take steps to enhance the political and judicial participation and representation of women at all levels.
Fifth, you can support the follow-up and review process by feeding inputs directly into the review and by helping to ensure the quality of data by investing in institutions and using big data to inform better planning and decision making.
Accurate data will also allow us to better respond to new and unforeseen challenges.
Honorable Governors,
Ladies and Gentlemen,

Politics / Come, Let's Build Together - Udom Emmanuel by AKSGNewMedia: 10:16pm On Aug 03, 2015
COME, LET’S BUILD TOGETHER

Being an Address by the Governor of Akwa Ibom State, His Excellency, Mr. Udom Emmanuel, During the Akwa Ibom State Association of Nigeria, AKISAN Convention in Philadelphia, USA, on July 31, 2015.

PROTOCOLS

I thank you for the great honor of addressing you on this occasion of the convention of Akwa Ibom State Association of Nigeria, United States. I am happy that the core philosophy of this Association is to foster unity amongst our brothers and sisters, and work for the betterment of our beloved fatherland.

AKISAN remains the glory of the land of our birth. You have sustained the tempo of our integrity and become a shining example of a virtuous organization. You have kept the steam and flame of the torch of the dreams of our founding fathers aglow. You have brought out the true Akwa Ibom spirit of excellence, honesty and distinction. We are proud of you.

Two years ago in Washington DC, I came here as a freshly sworn-in Secretary to the State Government and you received me with open arms and a deep sense of conviviality and brotherliness. Last year, in Scottsdale, Arizona, I came back still as the Secretary to the State Government, but with a mind made up to answer the clarion call of the good people of Akwa Ibom state to offer myself for higher service.

In October last year, I answered that call loudly and subsequently threw my hat into the gubernatorial ring as a candidate for the Governor of Akwa Ibom State under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

After seven months of selling our programs to our people, of persuading our people to buy into our platform ; after a bruising primaries where we criss-crossed the length and crannies of the state, selling our gospel of industrialization, of wealth creation and of sustaining superior performance, the good people of Akwa Ibom State rewarded me, first as their candidate for the office of Governor under the protective shield of the PDP umbrella, and finally, on April 11, 2015 as their duly elected Governor of Akwa Ibom State.

I want to thank you all for your prayers, the faith and the belief in our cause that most of you had shown and expressed in various forms and platforms. Quite a number of you traveled to Nigeria to participate in the exercise and to show total fidelity to our cause. I remain eternally indebted. I know there are some among you here who did not support us, but as you guys say it here “that’s the nature of the beast”. Let us eschew zero-sum game approach

The battle has been fought and won and now the real job of governance has started. I am not standing here just as a PDP Governor of Akwa Ibom state, but as a Governor for all Akwa Ibomites, irrespective of their political affiliations.

This has been the message we have been preaching since May 29, 2015, when I was sworn in. We have been preaching the message of togetherness, to eschew those divisive tendencies that have for centuries defined us, as the late Professor Emmanuel Ayandele had once said: “an atomistic society perpetually at war with itself”.

For so long, we have allowed the negative impulses of parochialism, of ethnic bigotry, to draw lines of divisions where a clear line of togetherness should have been written in bold letters. For so long, we have allowed mutual distrust shape our thoughts and the layers of relationship among our brothers and sisters.

The time has come for us all to collapse and check our little fears and distrusts for one another and unfurl an umbrella of love, of unity and of good neighborliness.

This new blocks of engagement should be across the board. It should permeate our politics, social interactions and help engender a new form of narrative: a narrative of a bold, proud, purpose-driven people of Akwa Abasi Ibom State coming together in a critical mass to build a virile, prosperous state where opportunities abound, where people are ‘aspirational’, where the ‘can-do’ spirit brims in our veins and blood, and where we hold our hands aloft, strong, virile and ready to help the next person cross the hurdle or jump the hoops to the corner of fulfillment, as opposed to applying zero-sum game approach: “I can only succeed at your own detriment”. We must bury, once and for all, this debilitating mindset.

We should not allow politics to tear us apart, we should not allow our philosophical differences in politics define the other as a mortal enemy who must be slandered, blackmailed, besmirched and where commending your brother or sister for a good job done is seen as a sign of weakness.

Politics should not be seen as blood sport. Here in America, spouses, siblings share different political affiliations and yet they don’t regard each other as enemies that must be destroyed.

James Carville, the man famed for helping couch the message that elected Bill Clinton in 1992, is married to one of the dye–in-the- wool conservatives - a Republican hawk - Mary Matalin. They have both appeared on several public affairs programs across the world, each touting the other party’s ‘bonafides’; yet, at the end of the day, they return home as husband and wife, burying their ideological differences and instead celebrating the ennobling ideals of public service.

President Roland Reagan and Speaker O’Neil were two larger- than- life ideological sparring partners. On a typical day, they fought for what they believed, and the righteousness of their positions. They screamed at each other, but later that evening, the two big Irish-Americans would sit together and share glasses of beer and back slap one another.

To them, politics was a noble game of persuading the people and whoever had a larger megaphone won the day. We should engender this level of engagement in our dear State. I implore you to be in the vanguard of this new narrative.

So, as I come here today to celebrate with you, I hold in my right hand, an imaginary flag of pride for our people. I raise it above my head like a banner of excellence and unity. It is a banner without stain. Keep it flying. You are our worthy ambassadors.

Two months ago, I took the oath of office as the duly elected Governor of our beloved State. Two months might be too short to give account of our stewardship, but I am happy to announce to this hallowed assembly that, in two months, we are laying the foundation of generational prosperity for our people. This is in line with the thrust of our campaign which is centered on industrialization.

What we have done so far?
We came prepared to work. We knew the task ahead was going to be enormous. Vision and sheer determination are our compass as we journey to our destination of greatness. A few days after we assumed office, we inaugurated a Technical Committee for the actualization of the Ibom Deep Seaport project.

Members of the committee are men and women with track record of competence, and who have made global impact in that sector.

I know you know the potentials immersed in the freight business for our people and Nigeria at large.

We did not stop there. At a stretch, we went ahead to inaugurate two more technical committees on Foreign Direct Investment and Agriculture and Food Sufficiency.

They have already started to yield good fruits. Investors have queued up to come to Akwa Ibom and invest in different sectors.

We have laid the foundation of an automobile industry with the ground breaking done in Itu three weeks ago for the assembling of luxury cars, trucks and vans.

And like they say, the automobile is the industry of industries. That, therefore, means, many more supporting industries will soon spring up everywhere in our State.

We have undertaken several interventions in critical areas - the Itu-Calabar Road gully erosion, the flooding in some parts of Uyo, Eket –Ibeno Road, gully erosions in Oron and the Anua hospital in Uyo.

Our people now enjoy steady supply of electricity with 20 megawatts added to the system. As a responsive government, we will not rest on our oars until our people have jobs, and the quality of life is improved significantly.

COME LET US BUILD TOGETHER
My dear brothers and sisters, determined as we are, we cannot build this bright future alone. Come let us build together.

The Diaspora has an important role to play. Do not stand and stare; come, for the work is enormous, but the harvest shall be plenty.

Come and add an enduring flesh to our framework of a modern Akwa Ibom State where industrialization shall precede and give rise to our greatness.

Diasporas are defining phenomena in the globalised world today. The Indian and Chinese Diasporas achieved a lot for their home countries; you too can.

The Chinese Diaspora is economically vibrant and is one of the leading investors in China. Besides, they also play a great role in promoting China’s economic interests.

China has experienced one of the most remarkable investment booms over the past three decades, and has become a model for many emerging countries.

Foreign direct investment increased from US$600 million in 1983 to $40 billion in 2000, $117.6 billion in 2013. Chinese Diaspora is the leading investor - 70% of China’s recent foreign investment has been provided by Diaspora members. Similarly, the outward investment by China was tremendously facilitated by their Diaspora.

How about India? The overall Foreign Direct investment to India is about USD 24.29 billion in 2013 - 14 as against USD 22.42 billion in 2012-13.

Numerous countries rely, to a great extent, on their Diaspora for investment, not only in remittances, but also as a FDI source.

This trend is followed by both emerging and developed countries. It saved crisis-stricken Europe like Ireland, Spain, among others.

Ireland for example targets both Diaspora-owned business and companies employing influential fellows of the Diaspora, acting as connectors.

When Ireland was struggling in 2009, it convened a conference aimed at convincing the well-to-do Irish Diaspora to help the country get back on its feet. This process is commonly referred to as Diaspora Direct Investment, and has become a new source for seeking capital.

This policy has equally been successfully implemented by several countries. It shows you have the economic power in your patriotic hands.

India, on the other hand, receives $70bn a year from it Diasporas. This money flows steadily, even through recessions.

Countries like Israel, which claims all Jews as its Diaspora, sell infrastructure bonds overseas, hoping experts will invest in the home country. They also count on business trips that could help create more jobs at home.

That is why we see Diasporas as important agents of the economic and social development of our State. On our part as a government, we are willing and ready to engage you effectively.

So, together, let us make good use of the enabling environment in our Country and State of origin as well as this comfortable destination that is brimming with opportunities.

Let us maximize the benefits of our migration. Let us make this strategic partnership for our economic development to blossom.

It was the late Dele Giwa, when he was still in America, who said, when his namesake, Patrick Dele Cole approached him to come and work for the Concord Press in Nigeria, he told him without hesitation; “America is good, but I feel a strong pull from home.”

Do not resist this patriotic pull to use your stay and contacts in America for the upliftment of your motherland. It is a pull of your connections and resources.

It is, therefore, my hope and faith that this convention will help strengthen collaboration, improve cross-fertilization of ideas and practices, and help foster espirit-de-corps among us for our common goal and our commonwealth.

And the seeds we have indeed planted in this fertile American soil will bear fruits in Africa, and the world shall pick them from Akwa Ibom State in Nigeria. God is with us.

Thank you and God bless.

Politics / Udom Emmanuel Enhances Educational Facilities by AKSGNewMedia: 1:01am On Jul 30, 2015
Manpower and human-capacity development are very crucial aspects of any nation's developmental blueprint. This is evident in the quality of education made available to the citizenry; a sector on which the Udom Emmanuel-led administration places high premium. On Monday, the 27th of July 2015, one of Akwa Ibom's early colleges, Cornelia Cornelly College (CCC), was the centre of attraction as it hosted a state government delegation led by the Commissioner for Works, Mr Ephraim Akparawa Inyang, on a physical assessment tour of the school premises and other parts of the city.

Mr Inyang, representing the Governor, and accompanied by the Commissioner For Housing and Urban Renewal, Prince Enobong Uwah, along with key staff of the Ministry of works and some engineers, announced the Governor’s approval for the construction of internal roads and renovation of dilapidated buildings in the college.

For a first phase, the project is to kickoff with the renovation of St. Dominic's hostel and the Home Economics block. And this construction is to commence with immediacy. Upgrading the facilities in the college holds invaluable importance to the promotion of academic activities by creating a conducive academic environment, especially in public schools, noted for their state of disrepair nationwide. It also goes a long way to demonstrate the Governor’s dedication to a high standard of education in Akwa Ibom.

Mr Inyang also pointed out that the decision to construct internal roads and give the dilapidated buildings in the school a facelift was inspired by the Governor’s campaign promises at the last Homecoming celebrations by the old girls of the college. And to emphasis His Excellency’s urgency, Mr Inyang charged the contractors to deliver the projects before the start of the new school year in September.

Travel / Akwa Ibom: A Safe Haven for Investors by AKSGNewMedia: 4:56pm On Jul 23, 2015
Nigeria’s 21st State, AKWA IBOM is located in the southern extreme of Nigeria’s geographical outlay. Home to about 3% of Nigeria’s population, Mother Nature has blessed all 7,081 square Kilometres of arable land, waters and its people with moderate climate, a beautiful ecological landscape endowed with a wide variety of Agricultural, Petroleum, Mineral, Marine, Wildlife as well as Human resources.

This accounts for Akwa Ibom’s place as one of the country’s top revenue earners. Investment opportunities therefore, abound in the state. The State is home to people of diverse nationalities and tribes alike, owing to an innate culture of hospitality.

In Akwa Ibom you will find some of the friendliest Nigerians. Living expenses are comparatively affordable, while leisure and entertainment are available in an avalanche of options. Investors usually weigh the risks involved in venturing into a new business environment, and so they carefully scrutinize several factors to determine the safety of their investments.

At an Economic and Investment Expo in London in 2012, Akwa Ibom was noted to be a state that “…brims with hope and investment opportunities”. The enabling environment for investments is very glaring in Akwa Ibom due to an avalanche of factors.

Economic Policies: A key step in the process of investment is environmental scanning. Government policies are a root ingredient in this respect. Although the Udom Emmanuel–led administration is still nascent, the Governor has started taking steps to fulfil his election promises of policies that will translate the framework of world-class infrastructures built by preceding administrations into economic development, wealth-creation and human empowerment. This means that would-be investors can tell the direction of the government’s policy thrust and how it will affect their assets in Akwa Ibom.

Logistics: Akwa Ibom is one of few Nigerian states serviced by multiple export free zones – notably Port Harcourt and Calabar – meaning multiple benefits for investors. Add this to the Federal/State Government-planned Ibaka Seaport and a functional airport, Akwa Ibom is accessible to the world. Meanwhile, administrations have been deploying resources into upgrading intra-state road networks.
Agriculture: Large farmlands of fertile soil and a complimentary climate all-year-round present a favourable environment for the production of food and tree crops as well as livestock, which is essential in the nation’s renewed drive in agriculture as an alternative revenue source to oil & gas. This provides lofty opportunities for industries with Agriculture-based interests. Nature has also been fair to Akwa Ibom with an absence of natural disasters.

Power: This sector has been a major determinant to the lethargic growth of the Nigerian economy. But, with the present administration’s drive for constant electricity supply and 100% coverage, insufficient power supply will in no time be a thing of the past in Akwa Ibom.

Housing: Akwa Ibom has given priority attention to its housing needs with the rapid growth of the Real Estate industry. A proliferation of housing estate projects now dots the Akwa Ibom terrain as both State and local government thoroughly administers land use in order to regulate the housing sector to meet the ever-increasing needs.

Mineral Resources: One of Nigeria’s top three oil-producing states, Akwa Ibom also has tremendous reserves of other mineral resources like clay, limestone, salt, coal, and glass sand. Investment opportunities in Akwa Ibom, according to the Ministry of Information, include: • Food and Beverages • Base Metal (including Iron and Steel) • Wood and Allied Steel Products. • Chemical and Pharmaceuticals. • Textile, Leather and Wearing Apparels • Electrical and Electronics • Domestic and Industrial Plastics Foam and Rubber. •

Non-Metallic Materials Human resources: The population of educated Akwa Ibom citizens is high and steadily increasing. The average citizen of the state is known to be industrious and this availability of skilled, willing and competent labour provides investors with a ready human resource. The State Government has also placed emphasis on the establishment of training centres for further human capacity development.

Security: Akwa Ibom is reputed as one of Nigeria’s most peaceful states. The communities are not restive, and the incidences of crime remain relatively low. The security agencies are well-motivated and diligent in the discharge of their duties.

Local markets: As at the last census in 2006, Akwa Ibom state’s population was pegged at a little less than 5 million. This provides a large market for businesses, further boosted by the densely populated surrounding cities like Port Harcourt and Aba which are in their won rights, huge centers of commerce. Investment brings economic growth and development and is a principal determinant in the creation of wealth. With the market available, favourable government policies and raw materials in abundance, along with the other factors stated here of a surety, Akwa Ibom State is a safe haven for smart investors. LIVE, WORK, INVEST IN AKWA IBOM.

Moved by the deplorable conditions he saw, the Governor promptly instructed that work should commence immediately to salvage the unsavoury situation the residents of the area have been facing for the past 30 years.
