Stages 1: Business Objective Senior management need to ask themselves this question: Why does our website/campaign exist? Using the 3 modeling tool will help answer this question. Think of acquisition, behavior and outcomes. Example of some business objective are Create Awareness, Generate Leads, Online Purchase etc. A business may have more than one objective The DUMB test will help senior management in determining Business Objective Doable Understandable Manageable Beneficial Forget about advert copy, video shoots; a website to host downloads of white papers or trying to mimic a competitor’s campaign. Think hard about why you are doing what you are doing. Get the answer from your staff and clients/customers. Executor: Senior management Stages 2: Identification of Goals for Business Objective Identifying the website/campaign Goals requires critical thinking from management and the consultant, with management leading the process. After using the modeling tools, your Goals are specific strategies you will leverage on to accomplish the business objectives. Executor: Senior management with input from Consultant Stages 3: Determine Key Performance Indicators (KPI) We need to determine a way of knowing if the Goal gotten from the Business Objective are been achieved. These KPIs must be measurable, ease to measure and affordable to measure. The consultant determines the KPI with approval of management. Key Performance Indicator (KPI) is a metric that helps you understand how you are performing against your objectives. For each goal, determine the most relevant KPI. Executor: Consultant after discussion with senior management Stages 4: Identify the Targets How do we know if the Business Objective is been achieve except we benchmark the KPIs against a threshold. These thresholds are the target and they are numerical values that have been pre-determined as indicators of success or failure of the Business Objective. Why set targets? Your video on YouTube got 100,000 views. Your Facebook page had 50,000 likes. Is that great or awful? How do you decide? That is why targets are needed. They are needed for effective planning of the campaign. If the KPI is volume of traffic and the target is set at 300,000 visits per month. It is obvious you would you execute your campaign differently than if that number was 50,000. If KPI is lead generation for procurement professional I do not think social media will be your primary acquisition strategy. Figure for targets must be agreed upon by the consultant and senior management since they will form the basis for assessing the consultant performance and fee. The figure can come from historical record of your previous campaign or competitors’ previous campaign. Executor: Senior Management and Consultant. Stages 5: Identify valuable Segments for analysis. This part is very important because of its incredible value. The likely identified segment will be: Group of people · Age range · Location · Gender Their sources · Desktop · Mobile · Tablet · Organic Search · Direct · Keyword Onsite behavior · Duration on website · Bounce rate · Visitor flow · Page/Visit Outcomes · Purchase on 24 hour graph, purchase on days of the week graph and purchase on month graph · Download on time graph Discuss what the most important segments to focus on for each goal with senior management. Identify the sources of traffic, types of people desirable, their attributes, their behavior, business outcomes that they care about the most. And also what customers to the site might want to accomplish. A balance between what the organization’s wants and the customers’ want should be determined. “Democracy cannot succeed unless those who express their choice are prepared to choose wisely. The real safeguard of democracy, therefore, is education.” - Franklin D. Roosevelt How do politician with good manifesto educate the electorate when they do not know where they are, making when to educate them impossible. The popular choice of media for past political campaign has been the traditional media, which are radio, television, newspaper, billboard, roadshow etc. Are these media the best tool to be used in getting in touch with the electorate in the 21st century? The answer is an obvious NO. The electorates are online searching on Google, posting on Facebook, tweeting on Twitter, discussing on Narialand, gossiping on Linda Ikeji’s Blog, looking for job on Jobberman, networking on LinkedIn etc They are SEARCHING ON GOOGLE “When life asks a question ask Google”. Actually people are asking Google because according to comScore Inc, 11.9 billion searches were conducted in February 2014. Imagine a fresh graduate searching on Google for job and your campaign message about mass employment shows up. They are POSTING ON FACEBOOK What are the youth doing with their phone all the time, they are posting, sharing, commenting or liking on Facebook. On the average Nigerians spend 28 minutes (alexa.com) of their day on Facebook apart from watching movies nothing takes as much time from them. They are TWEETING ON TWITTER What are the youth doing with their phone, if they are not on Facebook I bet you they are tweeting on Twitter. That was why, when #BringBackOurGirls went viral very politician wanted to tweet about it. They are DISCUSSING ON NAIRALAND Nairaland had 9 million page view in August 2014 because this is a forum where people discuss national issue. Major brands like Nokia, Tecno, Jumia, FCMB, British Council have seen the potency in Nairaland and that is why they place advert on it. Remember Nairaland is the most popular Nigerian centric website in the world. They are GOSSIPING ON LINDA IKEJI’S BLOG Like it or hate it, people are hooking up to Linda Ikeja’s Blog for the latest gist in town. The 2011 video of some Abia State University’s students gang raping posted on YouTube went on unknown until it was mentioned on Linda Ikeji’s Blog. They are SEARCHING FOR JOB ON JOBBERMAN The last Nigerian Immigration Service recruitment exercise shows the level of unemployment and the number of people that wants to change their job. Jobberman is the largest online job board in Nigeria and this website is among the top 10 indigenous website. They are NETWORKING ON LINKEDIN Some professional may not have time for Facebook, Twitter and other social media but they network online on LinkedIn. While these professional are looking for new talent, business opportunity, networking opportunity, a savvy politician can connect with them. LinkedIn advertising platform shows that there are over 2 million Nigerian professional on this platform. YOU CAN CONTACT ALABI A. ON WAYS TO HELP YOUR CAMPAIGN ORGANISATION REACH THE ELECTORATE |
Sir impossibility is nothing. This can be achieved in Nigeria if properly implemented. Figures for the media you mentioned can be obtained from the various media |
The next general election will be won by the candidate that effectively uses the online media properly for campaigning. The average American President is either a retired serviceman, Caucasian or from a powerful political dynasty (Kennedy, Bush etc). But Barack Obama (similar to Osama) a first term senator, African American whose father is a Kenyan became the 44th President of The United State of American because of his effective usage of the social media in his political campaign1. Let analyses some tools that can be used for electoral campaign in Nigerian 2015 General Election. Google Analytics & Statistical Tools (Big Data Analysis) Analyzing data from campaign website using Google Analytics and statistical tool can help politicians answer some question that relates to their campaign performance. • What are electorates doing on the campaign website? • Are they doing what we want them to do? • How do we know what they are doing? • How electorates are interacting with our content? Email Marketing Software (Continuous Reminder) Studies have shown that only 2% of sales occur at a first meeting2. Same applies to electorates, majority do not make voting decision the first time they come to your campaign website. And this electorate may not even come back to your website again. So using email to follow up with them is an excellence tool for reminder. Bulk SMS Platform (More Continuous Reminder) As at February 2014, there are 167.3 mobile phones in Nigeria3. This figure represents over 95% of the populace. This dwarfs PC penetration. If email is used to target these that can access internet then SMS will be a tool to target everybody. Twitter (Citizen Journalism An Effective Tool Against Rigging) While the world was asleep on the issue of the kidnapped girls in Borno a single tweet by a Nigerian Lawyer #BigBackOurGirls went viral. And this national issue soon became a global news item. Imagine what will happen if electorates tweet again rigging in a polling unit and this tweet goes viral. Facebook (The Electorate Playground) On the average Nigerians spend about 27 minutes on facebook.com daily4. There is hardly any media that can provide such amount of engagement time except television. But television is an expensive tool of engagement with electorate when compared with facebook.com. And facebook.com comes with an extra advantage of having an inbuilt data analytic feature. This feature can be used to measure engagement performance. “In online marketing a landing page, sometimes known as a "lead capture page" or a "lander", is a single web page that appears in response to clicking on a search engine optimized search result or an online advertisement. The landing page will usually display directed sales copy that is a logical extension of the advertisement, search result or link” - Wikipedia. Political campaign is akin to marketing campaign. While a marketer uses the entire trick in the book to make a consumer buys his product or service. The politician uses techniques like advertising, personality branding, media mention, roadshow etc to sell their manifesto to the electorate. While marketing goal is to increase sales volume a politician aim is to win election by getting the highest number of vote. Online advert copies are short and usually ineffective without the landing page. The objective of online campaign can only be achieved on the landing page which is specially designed for the campaign. These pages are highly optimized to convert online visitors to online buyers in the case of eCommerce website. A click on Jumia or Konga’s advert leads to where purchase can be made immediately, even when sales are not made attempt is made to collect visitor details. These details can be used for further marketing purpose like email marketing or SMS marketing. How Do We Implement This In Political Campaign? Landing Page Is Not Homepage Clicks on advert should not lead to your campaign organization’s homepage except that page has been optimized as a landing page. Landing page should be optimized for prospective electorate that clicks on the advert. Homepage usually have a lot of information that may distract them from achieving the objective of the campaign. Animation, colorful images, social media icon, beautiful menu structure may distract a prospective voter from filling your opt-in form. And sometime this information may push your core information below the fold. Optimized Landing Page Your landing page should be optimized for the objective of the campaign. A Jumia advert showing shoes does not leads to laptop. If the objective of the campaign is for PRO purpose then clickers should be lead to page that will sell the contestant’s goodwill. For examples image of the contestant donating should be above the fold, be large, prominent and with social media buttons for sharing, liking and tweeting. A/B Testing Human Behavior is difficult to predicate, but with the help of big data this can be simplified. A beautifully crafted landing page may not be working optimally and we may not even know this except we benchmark it against another. So for a campaign put up two or more landing pages and use data to determine which is best to work with? This is the era of big data there is no need to guess human behavior. An ardent user of Big Data is Google and they discovered from their Human Resources data that graduates from non-Ivy League University could be more innovative than graduates from Harvard, MIT and Stanford After landing Page If the objective of the campaign is to collect prospect’s details then these data should not be stored like a pack of card they should be used for the intended purpose. The taste of the puddy is in the eating and not cooking. If email address is collected then an email should be sent out within the minutes, if phone number is collected SMS or call should be made within the minutes. The chances of qualifying a lead are 21x better if called within 5 minutes–( leadresponsemanagement.org/lrm_study) Be Mobile Friendly 60.9% of internet users in Nigeria access the net via a mobile device - (Nigeria State of Digital Media by Terragon). So a Landing page that is not optimized for mobile device will be losing approximately 60.9% of potential electorate. Delight the electorate online because if you do not, the other contestant’s website that is mobile friendly is just a click away. Article Written by Alabi A. Nice one Seun. I am Online Marketing Consultant and Trainer at http://alabiansolutions.com/onlinemarketing and one of my major problem with advertising on Narialand was ability to target my desired audience. But this categorisation of advert placement space is a step in the right direction. But can you also work on your billing. Can we have billing model such as CPM and CPC. And finally incorporate online payment too. |
