The next general election will be won by the candidate that effectively uses the online media properly for campaigning. The average American President is either a retired serviceman, Caucasian or from a powerful political dynasty (Kennedy, Bush etc). But Barack Obama (similar to Osama) a first term senator, African American whose father is a Kenyan became the 44th President of The United State of American because of his effective usage of the social media in his political campaign1.
Let analyses some tools that can be used for electoral campaign in Nigerian 2015 General Election.
Google Analytics & Statistical Tools (Big Data Analysis)
Analyzing data from campaign website using Google Analytics and statistical tool can help politicians answer some question that relates to their campaign performance.
• What are electorates doing on the campaign website?
• Are they doing what we want them to do?
• How do we know what they are doing?
• How electorates are interacting with our content?
Email Marketing Software (Continuous Reminder)
Studies have shown that only 2% of sales occur at a first meeting2. Same applies to electorates, majority do not make voting decision the first time they come to your campaign website. And this electorate may not even come back to your website again. So using email to follow up with them is an excellence tool for reminder.
Bulk SMS Platform (More Continuous Reminder)
As at February 2014, there are 167.3 mobile phones in Nigeria3. This figure represents over 95% of the populace. This dwarfs PC penetration. If email is used to target these that can access internet then SMS will be a tool to target everybody.
Twitter (Citizen Journalism An Effective Tool Against Rigging)
While the world was asleep on the issue of the kidnapped girls in Borno a single tweet by a Nigerian Lawyer #BigBackOurGirls went viral. And this national issue soon became a global news item. Imagine what will happen if electorates tweet again rigging in a polling unit and this tweet goes viral.
Facebook (The Electorate Playground)
On the average Nigerians spend about 27 minutes on facebook.com daily4. There is hardly any media that can provide such amount of engagement time except television. But television is an expensive tool of engagement with electorate when compared with facebook.com. And facebook.com comes with an extra advantage of having an inbuilt data analytic feature. This feature can be used to measure engagement performance.

ELECTION CAMPAIGNS IN NIGERIA USING EMAIL MARKETING

Email marketing is directly marketing a commercial message to a group of people using email. In its broadest sense, every email sent to a potential or current customer could be considered email marketing.

It usually involves using email to send ads, request business, or solicit sales or donations, and is meant to build loyalty, trust, or brand awareness.

Email marketing can be done to either sold lists or a current customer database. Broadly, the term is usually used to refer to sending email messages with the purpose of enhancing the relationship of a merchant with its current or previous customers, to encourage customer loyalty and repeat business, acquiring new customers or convincing current customers to purchase something immediately, and adding advertisements to email messages sent by other companies to their customers.

Email Marketing plays an increasingly prominent role in running a 21st century Political campaign.
