COMMUNIQUÉ OF THE 17TH ANNUAL SYNOD OF THE DIOCESE OF LAGOS CENTRAL, METHODIST CHURCH NIGERIA HOSTED BY THE OJO CIRCUIT AT WESLEY METHODIST CHURCH, IBA, LAGOS FROM FRIDAY, 1ST – SUNDAY, 3RD MAY 2026. PREAMBLE The 17th Synod of the Diocese of Lagos Central of Methodist Church Nigeria was held between Friday, 1st and Sunday, 3rd May 2026. This spiritual retreat was hosted by Ojo Circuit of the Diocese at Wesley Methodist Church, Iba KM 4, LASU-Iba Road, Iyana School Bus Stop, Lagos. It was presided over by The Rt. Rev. Dr. Samuel R. Nortey, Bishop of Lagos Central, ably assisted by Bro. Engr. Kehinde A. Lawal, the Lay President of the Diocese. It was declared open by a Special Guest of Honour and the Chairman of the opening ceremony, Sir (Hon.) Asiwaju ‘Dosu Fatokun, KJW. The keynote address was delivered by Sir (Evang.) Olumide Oyetoyinbo, KJW. Delegates from the eight Circuits and one Special Area that make up the Diocese participated in Eucharistic Services and plenary sessions where the progress of God’s work in the Diocese and the state of the nation were discussed. At the conclusion of this Synod, the following communiqué was issued: 1. Deliberating on the theme of Synod, “I will fight for you” taken from Ex. 14: 14, Synod charged each Methodist Lay and Ministerial member to set aside quality time with God for prayer, reading the bible, sitting quietly in God’s presence to hear His voice and also to let God guide us in all our ways. The theme enjoins us not to strive in our own might but to be still before Him: renewing our commitment to Wesleyan holiness, fervent prayer, and bold evangelism. As we stand firm, God will part the waters: reviving dormant congregations, healing fractured relationships and empowering our Christian witness. We are not left to fight alone, the divine Warrior fights for us, turning apparent defeat into triumphant testimony. 2. Synod congratulated the recently created and inaugurated Amuwo Odofin and Alaba Circuits including the Ilogbo Elegba Special Area in the Diocese of Lagos Central which were direct answers to prayer to fulfil our Church expansion programmes thereby facilitating closer pastoral oversight and expanded mission frontiers. 3. As we approach the 2027 general elections, Synod calls on all politicians and their followers to adopt a civil approach to electioneering, put Nigeria first and avoid any action that threatens Nigeria’s maturing democracy or the integrity of the State. Synod commits the coming elections into the hands of God so that the exercise could be peaceful and successful. 4. Synod acknowledged the efforts of the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration in implementing policies aimed at cushioning the impact of the fuel subsidy removal through palliatives like the Expanded Conditional Cash Transfer Scheme, the National Social Investment Programme, the Consumer Credit Corporation, the Presidential CNG Initiative, and the Nigeria Education Loan Fund. Synod however observed that the gap between policy ideation and execution remains wide and should be tightened. While our economic reforms appear on paper to be good, the reality is that the much-taunted growth appear not to be evident in the lives of the average Nigerian who are daily confronted with economic and security challenges. 5. Synod also called on the federal government to cut all leakages and unnecessary spending on foreign travels, luxury vehicles, humongous salaries for political office holders, and redirect those savings to the ailing sectors of health, education, and infrastructure. Governance must return to the front burner, Politics must take second place and the welfare of the teeming masses must come first. 6. Synod expressed concern over the increasing sophistication of the terrorist organisations plaguing particularly the northern parts of the country, including their ability to move supplies, cash, and high-calibre arms without detection. Synod called for an urgent audit of the security sector’s human and material resources to ensure that our security forces have superior training, firepower, intelligence, morale, and numbers to overcome the security challenges confronting the nation. 7. Finally, Synod under the guidance of the Holy Spirit shall continue to pray for the peace and progress of our beloved nation, including God’s divine guidance for His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR as he dexterously pilots and navigates Nigeria out of the minefields imposed on the Nigerian Nation by mainly external factors and which must be brought under control for the progress and well-being of the Nigerian citizenry. Bro. (Engr.) Kehinde Adewale Lawal Lay President The Very Rev. (Col.) Adedayo Bamgbose Synod Secretary The Rt. Rev. Dr. Samuel R. Nortey Bishop of Lagos Central Sunday, 3rd May 2026.

COMMUNIQUÉ OF THE 16TH ANNUAL SYNOD OF THE DIOCESE OF LAGOS CENTRAL, METHODIST CHURCH NIGERIA HOSTED BY FESTIVAL TOWN CIRCUIT AT FESTAC METHODIST CHURCH, 3RD AVENUE, W CLOSE, FESTAC, LAGOS FROM THURSDAY, 24TH – SUNDAY, 27TH APRIL 2025. PREAMBLE The 16th Synod of the Diocese of Lagos Central of Methodist Church Nigeria was held between Thursday, April 24th and Sunday, April 27th, 2025. This spiritual retreat was hosted by the Festival Town Circuit of the Diocese at the Methodist Church, Festac Town, 3rd Avenue, ‘W’ Close, Festac Town, Lagos. It was presided over by the Rt. Rev. (Dr.) Samuel R. Nortey, Bishop of the Diocese of Lagos Central, ably assisted by Engr. (Bro.) Kehinde Adewale Lawal, the Lay President of the Diocese. It was declared open by a Special Guest of Honour and Chairman of the opening ceremony, Sir Ademola Aladekomo, KJW. The keynote address was delivered by Sir Gbolahan Olayomi, KJW. Delegates from the six Circuits, one Special Area and Chaplaincy that make up the Diocese participated in Eucharistic Services, training for Circuit and Local Church Finance Officers, and plenary sessions where the progress of God’s work in the Diocese and the state of the nation were discussed. At the conclusion of this Synod, the following communiqué was issued. 1. Deliberating on the theme of Synod, “He will rise again” taken from John. 11: 23b, Synod charged each Methodist Lay and Ministerial member to cultivate the habit of trusting the Lord for the solutions to all our problems, personally search the bible under the guidance of the Holy Spirit for direction, and cultivate the passion of having regular conversations with Jesus as demonstrated by Mary and Martha with the comforting knowledge that whatever situation we find ourselves in life God is with us. 2. Synod noted the prevailing unstable economic climate in Nigeria such as the high exchange rate, cost of living and of doing business, including the inadequate supply of energy, insecurity and lack of employment opportunities. Synod enjoined the government to diversify the economy, invest in agriculture, technology and renewable energy to create sustainable growth. Tax reforms should ensure equitable wealth distribution while anti-corruption measures must safeguard public funds for development projects. Public infrastructure such as roads, electricity, and healthcare facilities must be prioritized to unlock economic potential across rural and urban areas. Public-private partnerships should be established to drive job creation in sectors like technology, agriculture, and manufacturing. Skills acquisition programs, tailored to modern demands, should replace outdated curricula. Incentives for entrepreneurship such as tax breaks, grants, and mentorship would unleash the creativity of our young people. 3. Synod also noted on the part of government the need for more transparency, accountability and a renewed commitment to the rule of law. Electoral reforms are urgently needed to ensure free and fair elections, giving every Nigerian a voice. Leaders must prioritize policies that bridge ethnic and religious divides, fostering a sense of unity and healing the tribal and communal tensions that threaten our unity and peace. Synod urged the government to address with urgency and wisdom, the spectre of tribalism and communal violence looming large over Nigeria with the unchecked clashes between herders and farmers in addition to the widely reported forceful appropriations of the ancestral lands of others in various parts of the country by well-armed foreign herdsmen. 4. As stewards of God’s resources, Synod emphasised the need for the Church to go beyond its recognised charitable roles, by empowering our communities through vocational training, microfinance initiatives, and advocacy for economic justice. The local congregations should become a hub of skill development, offering training in trades, digital literacy, and leadership. Finally, Synod under the guidance of the Holy Spirit shall continue to pray for the peace and progress of our beloved nation, including God’s divine guidance for his excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Bro. Olukayode Adeoluwa Chairman, Communique Team The Very Rev. A. A. Bamgbose Synod Secretary Bro. (Engr.) Kehinde A. Lawal Lay President The Rt. Rev. Dr Samuel R. Nortey Bishop of Lagos Central Dated: Sunday, 27th April, 2025.
