Foreign Affairs / Biggest Defeat For Russia In A Generation by alcaptainero: 1:15am On Nov 10, 2022
The Kremlin has ordered its forces to withdraw from the city of Kherson on the Black Sea coast in southern Ukraine.

The order comes eight months after the Russians captured Kherson and its 300,000 residents, six months after Ukrainian troops began bombarding the Kherson garrison’s supply line and two months after Ukrainian brigades launched a counteroffensive in the south aimed at liberating Kherson.

It’s a profound victory for Ukraine, and a major defeat for Russia. Arguably the biggest Russian defeat in a generation.

The Ukrainians already had the momentum in Russia’s nine-month-old wider war on Ukraine. Now it’s safe to say the Ukrainians actively are winning the war—and soon could advance on other Russian-occupied territories and cities. The destroyed historic port of Mariupol, for instance. Or even the strategic Crimean Peninsula.

The order for Russian forces to retreat to the left bank of the wide Dnipro River, which runs just south of Kherson before emptying into the Black Sea, came from Russian defense minister Sergei Shoigu rather than from Russian president Vladimir Putin. In that way, Shoigu insulated his boss from the outcry that followed the announcement.

Gen. Sergey Surovikin, commander of all Russian forces in Ukraine, explained the rationale for the retreat in a report to Shoigu. With the ongoing Ukrainian bombardment of supply depots, bridges and railways, it’s no longer possible to supply tens of thousands of Russian troops north of the Dnipro, Surovikin explained. And defensive positions south of the Dnipro should be much stiffer—and better able to slow a Ukrainian assault.

Surovikin is right. But left unsaid is what happens once Ukrainian forces liberate Kherson and take up positions on the Dnipro opposite the Russians. From there, the Ukrainians with their European-made howitzers and American-made rocket-launchers easily can strike the Isthmus of Perekop, the three-mile-wide strip of land, 45 miles south of Kherson, that connects the Russian-occupied Crimean Peninsula to Kherson Oblast south of the Dnipro.

Crimea, which Russian troops seized from Ukraine back in 2014, is the base for all Russian operations in southern Ukraine. The pin holding together the occupation of the entire region.

Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky has made no secret about his intention eventually to liberate Crimea. "I will go to Crimea,” Zelesnky said when asked what he’d like to do after the fighting starts. “I really want to see the sea."

For the Ukrainian military, liberating Kherson is a step toward liberating Crimea. Soon, Ukrainian rockets and gun barrels will begin zeroing in on the Isthmus of Perekop, the gateway to the occupied peninsula.

Even after losing as many as 100,000 men killed and wounded in Ukraine, the Russian army still possesses significant combat power. But probably not enough to hold everywhere all the time.

“Once Kherson is liberated and the Ukrainians cross the Dnipro River in significant numbers and capabilities, the Russians will have to make a tough choice,” noted Luke Coffey, a fellow with the Hudson Institute in Washington, D.C.

Foreign Affairs / Russia Accused Over Deadly Strikes On Syria Camps by alcaptainero: 2:26am On Nov 08, 2022
First responders have accused Syria's military and its ally Russia of a "massacre", after nine civilians were reportedly killed in strikes on camps in the opposition-held north-west.

The White Helmets said rockets loaded with cluster bombs hit camps for the displaced in Idlib province on Sunday.

Three children and a woman were among the dead, the organisation added.

A Russian military official said Syrian warplanes struck a jihadist group's drone facility and training camp.

The UN said it was deeply concerned by the escalation of hostilities.

About 4.1 million people dependent on humanitarian aid, most of them women and children, are trapped in the last stronghold of the jihadist and Turkish-backed rebel groups opposed to President Bashar al-Assad, after 11 years of a civil war that has left half a million dead.

The region regularly sees armed clashes, air strikes and shelling despite a ceasefire brokered by Russia and Turkey in 2020 to halt a government offensive.

The UN has documented the deaths of at least 121 civilians there since the beginning of this year alone.

The White Helmets, whose volunteer first responders operate in opposition-held areas, alleged in a statement that the Syrian and Russian militaries carried out "a deliberate, calculated, and premeditated attack" on three camps for internally displaced people near the villages of Kafr Jales, Morin and Wadi Hajj Khaled, west of Idlib city, on Sunday morning.

The strikes caused fires and destroyed the tents and homes of hundreds of displaced families.

One of those killed was the infant son of another first responder, Hussein Bakir, according to the White Helmets.

The organisation also accused Russia of a "media disinformation campaign" over the strikes. It cited a statement on Saturday by a top Russian military official in Syria, Oleg Yegorov, who accused the White Helmets of collaborating with al-Nusra Front - a precursor to the jihadist alliance that dominates Idlib, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham - to stage attacks on camps in Idlib.

There was no immediate response to those allegations from Russia, but Mr Yegorov said on Sunday that the Syrian military struck al-Nusra Front facilities in retaliation for a drone attack that killed five Syrian soldiers.

On Monday, three UN humanitarian officials demanded an immediate investigation into the attacks on the camps and implored combatants "to act with restraint, and to prioritise measures safeguarding the safety and security of civilians and civilian infrastructure".

Religion / A Christian Monastery, Possibly Predating Islam, Is Found In The UAE by alcaptainero: 3:35am On Nov 05, 2022
An ancient Christian monastery possibly dating as far back as the years before Islam spread across the Arabian Peninsula has been discovered on an island off the coast of the United Arab Emirates, officials announced Thursday.

The monastery on Siniyah Island, part of the sand-dune sheikhdom of Umm al-Quwain, sheds new light on the history of early Christianity along the shores of the Persian Gulf. It marks the second such monastery found in the Emirates, dating back as many as 1,400 years — long before its desert expanses gave birth to a thriving oil industry that led to a unified nation home to the high-rise towers of Abu Dhabi and Dubai.

The two monasteries became lost to history in the sands of time as scholars believe Christians slowly converted to Islam as that faith grew more prevalent in the region.

Today, Christians remain a minority across the wider Middle East, though Pope Francis arrived in nearby Bahrain on Thursday to promote interfaith dialogue with Muslim leaders.

For Timothy Power, an associate professor of archaeology at the United Arab Emirates University who helped investigate the newly discovered monastery, the UAE today is a “melting pot of nations.”

“The fact that something similar was happening here a 1,000 years ago is really remarkable and this is a story that deserves to be told,” he said.

The monastery sits on Siniyah Island, which shields the Khor al-Beida marshlands in Umm al-Quwain, an emirate some 50 kilometers (30 miles) northeast of Dubai along the coast of the Persian Gulf. The island, whose name means “flashing lights” likely due to the effect of the white-hot sun overhead, has a series of sandbars coming off of it like crooked fingers. On one, to the island's northeast, archaeologists discovered the monastery.

Carbon dating of samples found in the monastery's foundation date between 534 and 656. Islam's Prophet Muhammad was born around 570 and died in 632 after conquering Mecca in present-day Saudi Arabia.

Viewed from above, the monastery on Siniyah Island's floor plan suggests early Christian worshippers prayed within a single-aisle church at the monastery. Rooms within appear to hold a baptismal font, as well as an oven for baking bread or wafers for communion rites. A nave also likely held an altar and an installation for communion wine.

Foreign Affairs / China's Xi Warns Putin Not To Use Nuclear Weapons In Ukraine by alcaptainero: 1:36am On Nov 05, 2022
Chinese President Xi Jinping explicitly warned Russia against the use of nuclear weapons in Ukraine Friday, one of the clearest signs yet of China's unease at a conflict started by its most important strategic partner.

The international community must "jointly oppose the use of, or threats to use, nuclear weapons," according to a statement published by the official Chinese news agency Xinhua on Friday.

"Nuclear weapons cannot be used, a nuclear war cannot be waged, in order to prevent a nuclear crisis" in Europe or Asia, he added.

The comments are the clearest warning yet to Russian President Vladimir Putin against further escalating a conflict that is increasingly turning against Russia on the battlefield, despite Russia's formal decision to annex four regions of eastern and southern Ukraine at the start of October. Ukrainian forces have made steady advances in the southern region of Kherson in recent weeks, forcing the Russian occupation administration to evacuate from the region's capital city in anticipation of an assault.

Western nations have also kept up the flow of financial and military aid to Ukraine, thwarting Putin's plans to sow division by cutting off gas supplies to western Europe.

At the time of the annexation, Putin had said he would use "every available means" to defend its Ukrainian conquests, irrespective of the lack of international recognition for the move. Since then, various news reports have suggested concrete discussions by the Russian military about how and in what circumstances a tactical nuclear device could be used in Ukraine, albeit without Putin's participation. Under Russian law, Putin is the only person allowed to order a nuclear strike.

The statement came during an official visit to Beijing by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and represents something of a diplomatic coup for Scholz, whose economy has been hurt harder than any other by Russia's gas blockade harder. Europe's largest economy is sliding into recession as sky-high energy prices make much of its manufacturing base unprofitable. The same energy issues are swallowing up German - and more broadly, European - disposable income.

Those developments have worrying implications for China too, given its economic dependence on exports to western markets. China's own growth has slowed well below the official 5.5% target this year, with gross domestic product expanding only 3.9% on the year in the third quarter.

Foreign Affairs / Russian Revolutionaries Prepare For Post-putin Future by alcaptainero: 1:26am On Nov 05, 2022
Some 65 former Russian lawmakers are to convene for a congress on Friday to establish what organizers say will be the first legitimate alternative parliament to the Federal Assembly of Russia, which critics say is no more than a rubber stamp for President Vladimir Putin.

The First Congress of People's Deputies of Russia will begin on Friday in Jablonna, a suburb of the Polish capital of Warsaw. By Sunday, organizers hope, the new body will have agreed a draft constitution to guide Russia through a future transition to democracy and elected an executive committee to lobby for international support and recognition.

Moscow's war in Ukraine—now in its ninth month with no end in sight—has galvanized the Russian anti-Putin movement abroad. For some, the quagmire conflict signals the beginning of the end of what they see as Putin's neo-imperial kleptocratic regime. Now, various would-be successor movements are positioning themselves to take the reins.

Ilya Ponomarev—a member of the Russian parliament from 2007 to 2016 and the only deputy to vote against the annexation of Crimea in 2014—is one of the congress organizers. Now based in Ukraine, he told Newsweek the new body hopes to create a roadmap for Russia to follow after Putin's ouster.

The congress, he said, is intended as a big-tent event. "We have invited everyone," he said. "We will even pass a special resolution calling for all the different political groups to join forces and to send their representatives...It's an assembly of deputies, and the deputies decide where to go."

"It's not about personalities," he said. "Yes, I was one of the authors of the idea, but I don't intend this to be my private show...I will very much try to influence and present my position. But at the end of the day, it will be the decision of the majority."

Foreign Affairs / Drone pix shows Ukrainian paratrooper emerge from woods & destroy Russian Tanks by alcaptainero: 1:16am On Nov 05, 2022
Incredible drone footage has revealed the moment a brave Ukrainian paratrooper dashed out from his hiding place to obliterate a passing Russian tank with a guided missile from mere feet away.

The armoured vehicle, one of Russia's modern T-80 main battle tanks, was driving along a dirt track lined by wooded areas - perfect concealment for Ukrainian soldiers lying in wait.

As it passed one particular row of trees, a lone Ukrainian soldier leapt out from cover, shouldered his weapon - an anti-tank guided missile - and fired a single shot.

He did so even as another Russian tank sat downrange appeared to have its barrel aimed directly at the Ukrainian position - though it is unclear whether this vehicle had been abandoned or disabled.

In a flash, the missile streaked across the track and impacted the passing tank, exploding in a plume of fire and white smoke.

The stricken vehicle initially continued to roll slowly onward, perhaps damaged if not completely scuttled.

But moments later the armoured hull erupted in a series of explosions as the ammunition inside cooked off, the detonations spewing metal across the dirt track and causing huge trails of smoke to rise above the wood.

Foreign Affairs / US Air Force Will Unveil Its Advanced New B-21 Raider Stealth Bomber On Dec. 2. by alcaptainero: 3:22am On Nov 04, 2022
One of the most anticipated events in the aerospace world is set to happen in just one month.

On Dec. 2, the world will finally get a glimpse at the Northrop Grumman B-21 Raider, a new stealth bomber aircraft that has been described by its manufacturer as "the most advanced military aircraft ever built." The company was first awarded the contract to build the B-21 for the United States Air Force (USAF) in 2015, and its entire production has been shrouded in secrecy ever since.

That secrecy is about to come to an end. The United States Air Force confirmed in an Oct. 20 statement that the B-21 will be revealed in a Dec. 2 ceremony at Northrop Grumman's production facility in Palmdale, California. "The unveiling of the B-21 Raider will be a historic moment for our Air Force and the nation," Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Charles Q. Brown, Jr. said in the statement.

Little is known about the capabilities or configuration of the B-21. What little has been publicly disclosed, according to a USAF fact sheet, is that the B-21 will be capable of crewed and uncrewed flight and will be able to carry and deploy both conventional and nuclear weapons.

In addition, the stealth bomber is said to be capable of carrying out intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance missions (ISR), conducting electronic warfare (such as jamming or spoofing radar and communications systems), and will feature an "open systems architecture" that will allow it to be upgraded with new capabilities in the future.

Doug Young, sector vice president and general manager at Northrop Grumman Aeronautics Systems, said in a company statement published on Sept. 20 that the B-21 "showcases the dedication and skills of the thousands of people working every day to deliver this aircraft" and is "a product of pioneering innovation and technological excellence.”

According to the same statement, there are six B-21 test aircraft in various stages of final assembly at the company's Palmdale plant. While the USAF plans for the Raider's first flight to take place in 2023, military officials have yet to announce firm target dates.

The B-21 Raider's unveiling ceremony on Dec. 2 will be an invitation-only event.
