*Edo govt vows tough sanctions for mining officials issuing illegal authorization to operators of borrow pits* The Edo State Government has threatened tough sanctions for Federal Government mining officers in the State involved in issuing illegal authorization for the operations of borrow pits in the Obagie N' Evbosa axis, in Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area of the State. The warning was issued by the State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, during an inspection tour of the borrow pit site at Obagie ‘N Evbosa, with other members of the State Executive Council. The governor, who was taken aback by the extent of illegal activities going on in the site, said the City is under environmental threat and his administration will do everything possible to stop all those illegally mining sands in Edo State. He described as illegal and illicit, the activities of the borrow bit operators, assuring that his administration will do everything possible to put a stop to the acts, noting: “This people don’t care about law and order. They don’t have respect for the government. We issued a statement warning people operating the borrowed pits to desist until we agreed on the areas that can be borrowed. “From what we have seen today, it is like these operators have no respect and they are challenging the government. Government will show its full might and force. This is threatening the environment. If we continue this way and at this rate, we will lose areas and communities. The National Transmission Company issued a warning that even transmission lines are being threatened because people are borrowing and taking sands around areas that are hosting national infrastructure. “You can see what is going on here. This is illegal and illicit. As a government, we will do everything possible to put a stop to it. We are issuing this and sending this as a warning to the Federal mining officers in the State who permit this and give approval and authorization that we would arrest and deal with them in Edo State. Obaseki further stated, “This is not a banana republic and we can’t just come out here to destroy our environment this way. In the next few years, people in these communities will begin to experience landslides and mudslides because of the way these mining activities are being carried out. “This is not right. We can’t continue to do this to ourselves. Our City is under threat and this government will do all to stop all those illegally mining sands here.” *PHOTO CAPTION* L-R: Secretary to the Edo State Government, Osarodion Ogie Esq.; Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, and Commissioner for Environment and Sustainability, Joshua Omokhodion, during an inspection tour of the borrow pit site at Obagie N' Evbosa, on Wednesday, June 19, 2024.

*We’ve prioritized infrastructure, human capacity devt, trained over 200,000 youths, says Obaseki* The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has said his government in the last seven and a half years has paid critical attention to infrastructure development as well as human capacity development, ensuring the grooming and empowering of a new generation of Edo people to drive the State’s development. Obaseki, who spoke to journalists in Benin City, the Edo State capital, said the government has so far trained over 200,000 young men and women on different skills and, supporting them to leverage their energy and potential to proffer innovative solutions to societal problems. According to him, “In Edo State, we’re doing a lot to improve the lives of our people and place our State on the path of accelerated growth and prosperity. We're investing in our own internal infrastructure. What are the areas of focus? We're focused on skills development. “In the last six years, we’ve trained over 200,000 young men and women. I’ve invested in broadband infrastructure across my State; it’s not cheap. We are building our own internal roads networks and investing in rainstorm infrastructure to de-flood my State. “I’m investing in supportive infrastructure to support agriculture and investing in my public service as well as governance architecture. You could just drive around my city and compare if you were here six years ago, whether it's the same city. So, we're investing and we're seeing returns. We are seeing response; we’re seeing people come in. We are also putting money into building a Four-Star Hotel, Radisson.” Obaseki added, “The city just can’t accommodate the people that come in anymore. So, we're seeing growth and are responding to that growth. We’re able to pay N70,000 as minimum wage. We are and have been doing so much and will sustain these efforts to assure a better and more prosperous State for our people.”

*How we transited from subsistence to large-scale agriculture in Edo, now have over 70,000ha oil palm plantation under cultivation – Obaseki* _*...Cassava, maize, others now being farmed commercially*_ The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has said that the state government has moved the State from subsistence to large-scale agriculture upon building on the learnings of the Edo State Oil Palm Programme (ESOPP). The governor, in a chat with journalists, noted that learnings from running large-scale oil palm plantations have been transferred to developing commercial cassava farms used for manufacturing of flour and ethanol in the State. According to Obaseki, “We still produce food in Nigeria at the subsistence level, which is inefficient. It is sad because before the Civil War when we had commodity boards and people were investing in larger-scale farming, which was more efficient. Agriculture was the mainstay of the economy and we didn’t have crude oil at that time. So, subsistence farming for 200 million people is not just going to work. We have got to think about production on scale because we're a huge country – a large country with a lot of landmass. But do we have that culture of agriculture? We produce food like every part of Nigeria, but we don't do it efficiently. You have small farmers going in, doing their shifting cultivation.” On what the Edo State Government did differently, he said: “What we try to do in Edo is to think about how to cultivate large-scale farms. To start with, you have to go for the value crops like oil palm, rubber, and cocoa. We started from that end because of the advantage we have in attracting investors. We did a forest audit and realized that we had quite a lot of land that, unfortunately, had been deforested, which we could use for oil palm cultivation. “We then launched the Edo State Oil Palm Programme (ESOPP). It was not about just giving out land, but a programme where we help you get land, survey the land, demarcate, go to the communities, deal with the communities, engage them, compensate those who you need to compensate, then do your nurseries, and get planting materials. Today, we have the largest agricultural programme on the continent, with more than 70,000 hectares of oil palm plantation. There are 7 to 8 investors, and everybody is producing.” He added, “What that does for us is that once we have people who now have the expertise to prepare the land for oil palm, I can then move them to help me prepare land for cassava, maize, and other crops. More importantly, what we have done as a government is to bring them in and organize them. My concern is my people, the citizens who are going to work with them. We focused more on developing capacity.” |
*Eid-el-Kabir: Obaseki harps on perseverance, good neighbourliness, sacrifice* I felicitate with our Muslim brothers and sisters as we mark the Eid-el-Kabir festivities. On the occasion of this celebration, I urge everyone to reflect on the peculiar state of our nation and espouse virtues that would promote peace, unity, good neighbourliness and sacrifice. We should all strive to have a deeper relationship with God as we reflect on the lessons of the season. Our nation is in dire straits. This period demands that we work together and do away with all ethno-religious strife for our collective progress. We are working closely with security authorities to ensure our Muslim faithful have a peaceful celebration. *Godwin Obaseki,* _Governor, Edo State_

*Obaseki bags Kingdom Citizens’ Award for good governance* The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki has been honored by the Eternal Sacred Order of the Cherubim and Seraphim Church Worldwide for his administration's fight against corruption and advocacy for good governance in the State. Presenting the award to the governor in Government House, Benin City, Baba Aladura of the Eternal Sacred Order of the Cherubim and Seraphim Worldwide, Dr. David Bob-Manual commended the governor for executing impactful projects and implementing reforms that have transformed all the sectors of the State's economy. The leader of the church thanked Governor Obaseki for the massive food palliative for the people of the State through the Christian Feeding Programme in partnership with Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN). He said, “The leadership of our church is in your State on pastoral duties and we thought it wise to pay you this courtesy visit and appreciate you for your exemplary leadership qualities which you have deployed to transform and develop Edo State. “We have heard of the laudable projects and programmes your administration has brought to the people of Edo State in the almost eight years of service to the people. On the lips of the people of Edo State, witnesses and testimonies are bound as your administration has touched the lives of Edo people. “You have executed projects and reforms touching virtually all the sectors of Edo’s economy which include education, health, sports, economy, civil service, power and citizens' welfare schemes. You have been able to pay N70,000 when the Federal Government is struggling with N30,000 minimum wage. “Thank you for the massive food palliative to the people of the State through the Christian Feeding Programme in partnership with CAN. It is second to none. Edo State under your watch has produced the highest ever internally generated revenue (IGR) and it’s a testimony of a good government. “Your performance speaks volumes for you and you deserve all the accolades of the best governor of the year. In governance, you have adhered to the principle of equity, justice, fairness and strengthened trust between the government and the people. “Your stand against corruption and your advocacy for good governance serves as a beacon of hope and integrity in the political landscape as all these and more gave credence for your nomination by our Church to be honoured with the prestigious and highly reserved “Kingdom Citizens' Award”. On his part, the governor thanked the leadership of the Church for the visit and the accolades for the developmental strides achieved by his administration in the last seven and half years. He noted that the recognition is well received and assured the Church that the honour will encourage his administration to do more as it’s clear that the people are watching. Obaseki noted, “In Edo State, we have been guarded by some fundamental principles shared by the church which is equity, fairness and justice as the church plays a very important role in Nigeria especially now that things are deteriorating. “People come to the Church for help instead of the government because the government has failed them and any government that needs to reach the people and is ready to be sincere, such a government should partner the church. “Thank you for the sacrifices and support you give as the church has helped the nation survive so far. Politicians don’t care as most are in government for themselves and what they can get out of government, but the church cares, raising generations of people in a certain way of thinking. “Following the level of inflation and hunger in the land, we decided to partner with the Church and contribute our own widow's mite of distributing food items to our citizens. The CAN president has shown diligence and commitment in ensuring that the programme succeeded.” *PHOTO CAPTION* *IMG_01* Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki (left), with the Baba Aladura of the Eternal Sacred Order of the Cherubim and Seraphim Worldwide, Dr. David Bob-Manual, during a courtesy visit, in Government House, Benin City. *IMG_02* L-R: Chairman, Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Edo State Chapter, Apostle Irkpono Omoike; Senior Apostle General and Secretary to the Holy Order, Napo Emuchay; Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki; Baba Aladura of the Eternal Sacred Order of the Cherubim and Seraphim Worldwide, Dr. David Bob-Manual; his wife, Prophetess Elsie, and Chief of Staff to Edo State Governor, Engr (Dr.) Osaigbovo Iyoha, during a courtesy visit, in Government House, Benin City.

*African leaders converge on Benin, discuss pathways to functional education on the continent* _*… make case for Obaseki’s transformative reforms*_ _*… ‘African countries not making enough progress because leaders take instruction from Western countries’*_ African leaders, Thursday, converged on Benin City, the capital of Edo State, for the 2024 Democracy Day Dialogue, to discuss pertinent issues undermining functional education on the continent and propose solutions that will engender growth and development. The event, which was held at the Victor Uwaifo Creative Hub and Soundstage, Airport Road, Benin City, was organized by the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation, a policy think-tank set up by former President Goodluck Jonathan in 2015. Guests at the event include Nigeria's Minister of Education, Mamman Tahir; former Vice President, Namadi Sambo; former President of Benin Republic, Boni Yayi; former President of Kenya, Uhuru Kenyatta, former Vice President of Zambia, Dr. Nevers-Sekwila Mumba; Deputy Governors of Bauchi and Bayelsa States, and other dignitaries from across Africa. Opening the proceedings, Governor Godwin Obaseki said Africa is at a crossroads and that the continent is blessed with a population of young people hungry for success. He noted that the theme: Functional Education and Effective Political Leadership as a Panacea to Africa’s Growth and Development is apt because it captures the essence of moving ahead and places responsibility at the feet of political leaders in the African continent. He said: “I welcome you all to this great gathering which serves as a platform where African and local leaders have gathered to have an honest conversation on democracy and the undeniable role of education in fostering growth and development in Africa.” Obaseki commended the former President for his actions in keeping Nigeria united following his rare decision to concede defeat after the 2015 general election. “The leadership ability you showed at the critical moment in our democracy saved the nation as your actions have kept us as a united nation. If not for your decision and actions, we would not have the opportunity to celebrate Democracy Day. You will forever be praised in the annals of Nigeria’s history, as your actions demonstrate the vision of your Foundation. “As African leaders, we are responsible for making the decision that will enable the youths to play their parts in developing Africa. The future is for Africa as the decision we make will not only affect the African continent but the world at large. On the State’s education reforms, he said: “People are coming to Edo State to understudy our educational reforms. Our efforts brought us to the attention of the world. We are now placed amongst countries recognized for education reforms. Former President Jonathan thanked the Edo State Government for accepting to host the Foundation as the event coincided with the State’s Education Week, adding, “I thank the keynote speakers for opening the eyes of African leaders, showing them the way to improve and develop the continent. I urge you to meet with leaders in the education sector across the country to discuss the paper.” “I urge our leaders to put in their best in improving our educational system for the benefit of African children.” Nigeria’s Minister of Education, Mamman Tahir, in his goodwill message, commended Governor Obaseki for working hard in making Edo an accelerator State for education reforms. He noted that the figure of out-of-school children in Nigeria remains a challenge, but that the Federal Government has succeeded in returning 2 million children back to school. Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Mr. Peter Obi, thanked the former President Jonathan for the sacrifice he made in keeping Nigeria united, as no other leader in Nigeria has beaten his record. According to him: “Free and fair election is all Nigeria needs to correct the errors facing Nigeria as a nation.” He said education remains the most fundamental ingredient needed to keep Nigeria on the path of development. The Keynote Speaker and Chairman of the University Council at Cavendish University, Uganda, Prof. Olubayi Olubayi called on African leaders to ensure that all African children are educated. He added that Africa is not making enough progress because the leaders do what other countries tell them to do, noting: “If Africa is to make any progress, what we must do is not what other countries tell us to do. “As much as you educate all African children, you must set up special schools for the most gifted and talented children. If African countries are to rise, all villages, cities, towns, and local governments must have at least one special school for gifted and talented kids.” *PHOTO CAPTION* *DSC_ 01* L-R: Nigeria's Minister of Education, Tahir Mamman; Former Vice President, Namadi Sambo; former Vice President of Zambia, Dr. Nevers-Sekwila Mumba; former President of Benin Republic, Boni Yayi; Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki; former Nigeria’s President, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan; former President of Kenya, Uhuru Kenyatta, and former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Mr. Peter Obi, during the 2024 Democracy Day Dialogue, organized by the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation, in Benin City, on Thursday, June 13, 2024. *DSC_ 02* L-R: former President of Benin Republic, Boni Yayi; former President of Kenya, Uhuru Kenyatta; former Nigeria's First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan; former Nigeria’s President, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan; Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki; his wife, Mrs. Betsy, and Former Vice President, Namadi Sambo, during the 2024 Democracy Day Dialogue, organized by the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation, in Benin City, on Thursday, June 13, 2024.

*Obaseki to pay salaries on June 14th ahead of Sallah* The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has said that the state government will pay government workers salaries on June 14th ahead of the Sallah celebrations. The governor said this during the commissioning of the State Secretariat Complex on Wednesday, in Benin City, the State capital. According to him, “I have heard all the accolades about the minimum wage. I assure the workers that it is not a fluke. We are a very deliberate government that sits back to do our work. You know that for the seven and half years since we came into office, we have paid salaries on the 26th of every month. “In cases where we have holidays, we pay our workers before the holidays so they have money to celebrate. In that same guise, we will be paying the salaries for June on Friday 14th of June ahead of the Sallah celebration to enable you to have a good Salah.” #ObasekiFinishingWell

*Minimum wage: We planned for N70,000 wage three years ago – Obaseki* _*… to set up transition c’ttee for next administration*_ The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has said that the State Government made plans for a N70,000 minimum wage three years ago when the telltale signs began to show that the economy was going in the wrong direction. The governor disclosed this when the Editorial Board of Tell Magazine presented him with the Award for Exceptional Courage in Leadership, in Government House, Benin City, the State’s capital. He said that the state made the plans for the increase in minimum wage when he started raising the alarm on the excessive borrowings by the Federal Government to meet its statutory obligations. According to him, “We are able to pay the N70,000 minimum wage because we planned ahead in the last three years because we knew a day like this would come. “Thank God that we have been vindicated today, as our sincerity has helped us prevail over every situation. We see prospects for a better economy and transparent government in Edo State because of the institutional reforms we have introduced to better manage the State.” He continued: “We have always prevailed because the majority of Edo people understand, appreciate and endorse what our government has done. This has been the reason for the courage with which we have tackled any problem we faced along the way.” Noting that the state was on a steady growth trajectory, he said: “For the next few months that are left for our administration, we will finish strong. We will finish all that we have started. This week, I will set up my transition team that will aggregate and document for the next administration all our achievements, projects and undertakings for our administration.”

*Obaseki inaugurates 1000-member parent’s council* _*… tasks parents, traditional rulers to insist on sustaining reforms*_ _*… Cardinal Onaiyekan commends Obaseki for creating new era of excellence in education*_ The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has tasked parents and traditional rulers in communities across the State to get involved in ensuring gains recorded by his administration are sustained. The governor gave the charge during the inauguration of a 1000-members Parents’ Council at the Parent’s Summit held as part of activities to mark the Education Week in Benin City, the State capital. He said sustainability is only possible when the citizens insist that things should be done properly and done right. In a keynote address, titled: “Parents, School and Education”, the Archbishop Emeritus of the Catholic Archdiocese of Abuja, Cardinal John Onaiyekan commended Governor Obaseki for creating a new era of excellence in education in the State and for inaugurating the Parent’s Council. Governor Obaseki said Edo children are the future of Nigeria, noting, “Our children are our greatest assets. Human capital development begins with them as they are the future of Edo State and Nigeria. That is why it is very important that we spare no resources in building critical institutions and structures to ensure that systems required are put in place to secure a better future for them.” He said, “This Parents’ Summit is important and can’t be over emphasized because the actions, decisions and choices which we make today will greatly impact the lives and shape the future of our children. “This gathering will provide a perfect umbrella for bringing parents, guardians, educators, policy makers, leaders and other stakeholders in the education ecosystem together to discuss various challenges and opportunities related to parenting and the development of our children not only for today but also in the future." Obaseki continued: “When we began the reforms in education, we knew the challenges were enormous. We decided to start with the foundation - the basic education level. As we thought through the reform process, we looked at five pillars. The most important element in the reform process are the teachers. We had to focus on them and make sure teachers are supported and encouraged to teach the child properly so that they can learn. “One key pillar we introduced is the communities in the governance of our school system. That pillar led to setting up of the school-based management committee, the Parents Teachers Association (PTA), alumni association for various schools as well as the Parents’ Summit, which is holding today. “As a government, we have moved from a situation where the government feels arrogantly that it knows everything and owns everything to a situation where we know that our citizens know more than us. That is why we rely on our people to make the decisions we have implemented. “The input of the community is key in terms of the educational outcomes we seek for our children. Education is not only a responsibility of the government but a shared responsibility. Parents have a larger share of that responsibility." Obaseki further stated, “In the last few years, one thing stands out for us in Edo State, which is the Edo Basic Education Section Transformation (EdoBEST) programme. Edo is now the best in Nigeria. For Edo to become the best, we must focus on the next generation. We must move from schooling to learning. “We have over 400,000 children in our basic school system learning today. They are going to be our stars tomorrow and form the bulk of human capital for Nigeria. This has been made possible because of the cooperation of communities and parents. “Sustaining the progress of eight years is possible if only parents and traditional rulers in our communities get involved. Sustainability is only possible when the citizens insist that things should be done properly and done right. “For sustainability of what we have created, we want to establish the right structures. That’s why I am here today to formally inaugurate the Parents’ Councils of schools in Edo State to further emphasize the role of parents and parents’ participation in our educational system.” He added, “I congratulate the 1,000 parents who are representatives of the Parents’ Council. As we inaugurate this Parents’ Council today, I believe these parents will lead and advocate for quality education and should be champions of their welfare and ambassadors of good parenting.” On his part, Cardinal John Onaiyekan noted that governor Obaseki has been able to raise the standard of public schools in the State to compete with private schools, saying that achievement is good news for all. Onaiyekan noted, “Every Nigerian child’s education deserves to be funded by the State. There should be a forum where leaders and education stakeholders will gather to discuss the funding of Nigeria’s educational system. I congratulate Edo State Governor for his contributions to improve education in the State.” In her welcome address, a primary 3 pupil of Obaseki Primary School, Osaigbovo Melody, thanked the governor for the reforms in the education sector, noting that the EdoBEST Programme has improved the learning and reading ability of Edo children. *PHOTO CAPTION* L-R: Archbishop Emeritus of the Catholic Archdiocese of Abuja, Cardinal John Onaiyekan; Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki; his deputy, Engr. *Obaseki bags Tell Magazine’s award on exceptional courage in leadership* The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki has been decorated with the award for exceptional courage in leadership by the Editorial Board of Tell Magazine in recognition of his contributions to the development of the State in the last seven and half years. Presenting the award to the Governor in Government House, Benin City, the Publisher of Tell Magazine, Nosa Igiebor, commended the governor for his outstanding achievements in various sectors of the state’s economy. He said: “You don’t like talking about yourself. Neither do you like noise making but prefer to record achievements in silence. There are people who have watched you in the last seven and a half years as Governor of Edo State and they have seen in you someone who has worked very hard. You have shown that things can be done differently. “The Editorial Board of Tell Magazine doesn’t give awards but we have a policy where we identify individuals making differences in a very fundamental way, both in the public and private sectors. We believe we have the obligation to recognize them; not just only talking about them but presenting them with awards. “What is so unique about you as a Governor is that you are a different kind of politician, who understands the gravity of the responsibility of being in the office you occupy.” He continued: “You raised an alarm about the economic situation of Nigeria in 2020, saying that the country is technically broke and that those in power were trying to cover up by printing money. You warned against it; you got bashed left and right but today look at where we are? “The duty of the Governor is to serve the people and in the estimation of the Editorial Board of Tell Magazine, you have consistently done that for Edo people in the last seven and half years. You have shown that you are a different kind of leader.” On his part, Governor Obaseki thanked Tell Magazine for the recognition, noting that when a leader continues to shout and scream about their achievements, that leader has not really done much. He said it is “those that have benefited from one's leadership that should tell other people about your success.” Obaseki noted, “We focused on completing what we set out to do. This is so that by the time we focus on communicating our achievements to the people, our achievements will be visible. “As a leader, sometimes you sit down to ask if your sacrifice is worthwhile? People are watching and appreciating the efforts one is making to create a better society. “It’s very rewarding to realize that many more citizens may not have the voice but share in your vision, commitment and passion. It is very consoling. This award came at a very auspicious time for me when we are going through very interesting and perilous times, but we have been fervent. When we see people appreciate us, it makes us happy.” The governor added that the country is at a crossroads, noting, “This is a time that we need fearless leaders that will say things as they are. This is so that we can look for a way out. The solution to our national problems can’t be restricted to certain ideas as Nigeria is a large country with problems and this is the time for everybody and leaders from the entire spectrum to have a serious conversation about the future of Nigeria. “This is not the time for trade blaming, fault picking can’t be now as we all should come out and put our hands on deck to steer the ship of Nigeria out of troubled waters back to safe water. “Thank you for this acknowledgement of our modest contributions, particularly in the area of governance. This has propelled every other reform that we have undertaken. Getting our citizens to know that politics is about service to God and the people. Thank God we have been vindicated. Our sincerity has helped us prevail over every situation. *PHOTO CAPTION* Publisher, Tell Magazine, Nosa Igiebor (right) presenting the Exceptional Courage in Leadership award to Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, in Government House, Benin City, on Monday.

*Obaseki hails Edo teachers, salutes commitment, support for reforms in education sector* _*…says reforms ‘ll be sustained with emergence of a competence, credible successor*_ _*…assures better funding for special needs schools*_ The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has hailed teachers in the State for their commitment and support for his administration’s reforms and programmes in the education sector over the past seven and half years, leading to the gains recorded in revamping the system and deepening quality education in the State. Obaseki spoke in an address to teachers at the Edo Teachers for Tech Conference, held at the Sir Victor Uwaifo Creative, in Benin City, as part of events lined up to commemorate the 2024 Education Week. The governor, who reeled the impact of his administration’s programmes and reforms in education, said the gains recorded will be sustained with the emergence of a credible and competent successor who is able to make the necessary sacrifice for the betterment of the State and its people. According to him, “EdoBEST is sustainable if only we vote and elect people that know what to do when they are in charge of government. That is the only way to sustain the education reforms in Edo State. The decision you make on the 21st of September 2024 will determine the sustainability of the reforms in the education sector. “We must make sure we participate and elect a man who means well for the Edo people and is able to make sacrifices for us. What we have done in EdoBEST and other areas are sustainable, if only leaders at all levels care enough to make sacrifices.” Reassuring better support for special needs schools in the State, Obaseki further stated, “One area I wish to spend more time on is special education. Once I finish as governor of Edo State, I will take interest in special needs education and before I leave office, I will make sure I get funding for Special needs schools in the State.” While commending the teachers for accepting to embrace technology and reforms in the sector, especially at the foundational level through the EdoBEST programme, which has impacted the lives of over 400,000 Edo pupils, the governor said, “The biggest challenge faced during the journey was that of attitude change which the teachers accepted and today the result is open for all to see as the State has recorded mass improvement in the education sector. “We have embraced technology in all we do in the State, using data in all we do as it has helped our development in several areas. Our intention as an administration is to make life better for our people and ensure progress in the state as technology plays a prominent role in all aspects of our lives.” The governor said the cooperation and support of the teachers in implementing the EdoBEST programme across schools in the State helped in restoring the hopelessness and mistrust between the government and teachers in the past. He added, “The next generation of citizens in Edo State will be globally resourced as the teachers are already doing a good job to shape them for the future as the future looks very bright for Edo State and its people.” *PHOTO CAPTION* Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, addressing teachers at the Edo Teachers for Tech Conference, in Benin City, as part of events lined up to commemorate the 2024 Education Week, on Monday, June 10, 2024.

*Okomu clash: Obaseki visits wounded soldiers, vows to apprehend perpetrators* _*…to pay hospital bills of attack victims*_ The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki has visited soldiers wounded during an attack by assailants in Okomu Community. The governor, who expressed his displeasure over the incident, vowed that the State Government will fish out individuals and groups behind the attack. The governor was represented during the visit at the Military Hospital in Benin City, by the Edo State Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, Chris Nehikhare. He was received by the Director of the Military Hospital, Brig. Gen. Pauline Olubunmi Aburime. Other government officials in the entourage include the Commissioner for Public Safety and Security, Kingsley Uwagbale; Commissioner for Mining & Energy, Enaholo Ojiefo, and heads of security agencies in the State. Obaseki said, “It is not right for the military personnel to be attacked in any community here in Edo State. A few weeks ago, we were aware of what happened in a community in Delta State where over twenty (20) soldiers were killed by youths. “In Edo, we have the issues of cultism and Okaigheles. The data available to us at the State Security Council meeting showed that Okaigheles are largely responsible for the threat to the security of Edo State which led to the ban on their activities.” The governor added, “Just as the State Government banned Okaigheles and their activities, some people are condemning the ban saying people should ignore it and this has encouraged those that went to Okomu forest to attack soldiers protecting our assets. “Three soldiers were badly wounded. We have one here now while others are worse. Their gunboats were destroyed. We don’t want a situation where we will be losing soldiers to reckless, dangerous cult groups. “We appeal to leaders of Edo South to discourage the youths who are armed to desist from these acts as they are not only attacking soldiers but also civilians on the streets. We are here to visit the soldiers and appeal to them that the Edo State Government will take care of the bills incurred.” Governor Obaseki warned the perpetrators to desist from such acts because the State Government will not tolerate such acts to prevent what happened in Odi Community in Bayelsa State or the incident in Delta State. He noted: “All Edo people, irrespective of party affiliation, must support the government in this fight against cultism and killings in the State as the State has lost over 150 people as a result of the acts. We thank the Nigerian Army, a responsible organisation that doesn’t take the laws into their own hands if not it would have been a different story. “We will start an operation this week to flush these people out, as we have a lot of security information and data that will help us flush them out. We advise those that belong to any cult group to return the arms they have, renounce their membership of any cult groups they belong to.”

8 June 2024 *STATEMENT ON TOTAL BAN ON CULTISM, OKAIGHELE ACTIVITIES IN EDO* The Edo State Government hereby reaffirms its decision to ban the activities of Okaigheles and Cultist in Edo South communities due to the alarming rise in cult-related activities and the resulting homicides in the region. This decision was made in the interest of public safety and to curb the growing violence that has plagued our communities. The Edo State Security Council data has shown that these two groups (Okaigheles and cultists) pose the most severe threat to the security and stability of the State, resulting in the decision of the Council to place a total ban on the criminal groups. While we respect the tradition and customs of our communities, it is important to note that the safety and security of our citizens must always come first. Chief Osaro Idah, Obazalu of Benin’s contradictory statement does not change the gravity of the situation at hand, and we stand by our decision to enforce this ban on Okaigheles to protect the lives of our people. The state government notes that statements like the one made by Chief Idah, emboldens these criminals to take up arms against ordinary Citizens, Military, Police and other constitutional security agencies. For example, on Friday, the 7th of June, 2024, some so-called youths opened fire on three men of the Nigerian Army attached to Okomu Oil Palm Plc., in Ovia South West Local Government Area, injuring them and throwing the community into pandemonium. In the coming weeks, Government will proceed on a full-scale operation to disarm these criminal elements and neutralize their threat against public peace. Government therefore warns in the strongest terms that it will not allow any individual or organization no matter now highly placed to undermine the efforts of the State Security Council to protect the lives and property of our people. We reiterate that the activities of cultists, Okaigheles and their sponsors remain banned in the State and we will spare no effort to ensure that those who flout the ban are made to face the full weight of the Law. *World Environment Day: Obaseki assures holistic policies will preserve nature, build sustainable food systems* The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has said that holistic policies initiated by his administration will preserve nature and build sustainable food systems to engender sustainable development in Edo State. The governor said this in commemoration of 2024 World Environment Day celebrated by the United Nations and its sister agencies. He noted that the government has been deliberate and intentional in pursuing policies that protect the State’s biodiversity, flora and fauna, as well as its food systems. According to him, “We have, over the years, been very intentional with preserving the environment and this has driven the way we implemented policies on land use and environmental sustainability. “One of the key things we did was to work with data. This was why we embarked on a forest cover study to ascertain how much of our forests have been depleted due to human activity over the past decades. The discoveries were startling but it also served as the kick-off point of the quest to restore these covers and also think about how to put them to good use.” He noted that the theme for this year’s World Environment Day, “Land restoration, desertification and drought resistance,’ are apt as it captures the government’s move to leverage its heritage in palm cultivation to repurpose its deforested land. According to him, “We launched the Edo State Oil Palm Programme as a key policy of the government to arrest deforestation. We have worked with private sector partners to develop 70,000 hectares of land in the first phase and have earmarked another 40,000 for a second phase. These forms part of our efforts to sustain a formidable food system and also promote commercial agriculture in the State." “The private players who get the allocation are mandated to reforest 20 percent of the total land as reserves, which is well within the plan on environmental sustainability,” Obaseki added. The governor added that the resuscitation of the Urhonigbe Rubber plantation is also part of the grand plan, noting that the several tree planting initiatives have been launched with non-governmental organisations in the State as part of government’s reforestation strategy.

The Primacy of Truth (Part 14) By Crusoe Osagie Like many young men of Edo origin, Osamudiamen was smart, aspirational and daring. He reminds me of a statement by a United States national who worked in the Nigerian oil and gas industry for many years. This expatriate, enthused by the indomitable Nigerian spirit, said Nigeria is the only country he had been to in the world where every young man is certain that he will make it in life, no matter how squalid his present condition. In his twenties, Osamudiamen had tried varied ventures and was not satisfied with the prospects that seemed to lie ahead. This was between 2015 and 2016 just after Governor Godwin Obaseki took over as Edo State Governor. Edo State had been hijacked by non-state actors and if you asked a primary school kid who his role model was at the time, he would most likely identify a hoodlum who drew relevance from the government of the day. In those days, there were many of them. They called themselves ‘Lions and Tigers.’ Osamudiamen could not see a flicker of hope in the ominous gangland which Edo State had become in those days. He soon succumbed to the prodding from traffickers who told him his energies and ingenuity will be better rewarded in Europe. Osamudiamen’s disappointment with the hopelessness at home and his persuasion to make it just anywhere else were equal in intensity, so he set out for Europe on foot. The last call from Osamudiamen was from some detention facility in Libya. Osamudiamen who reeked of the courage and fearlessness of the average Benin man, sounded a bit flustered in that last call which ended abruptly. We never heard from him again. It is now almost eight years. Osamudiamen is not a character of fiction. He is my first cousin, born to my father’s immediate older brother. You may have noticed in this piece that I sometimes use ‘is’ and other times ‘was,’ in reference to Osamudiamen. It is not that I am not conversant with the use of present and past tenses in a sentence. It is just that no one knows if Osamudiamen is alive or dead. No closure. There is a certain emptiness I sense each time I run into Osamudiamen’s mother at family events. A mother’s undying love and optimism. After sharing pleasantries with me, she never fails to remind me to continue the search for my long-lost cousin. The request breaks my heart in pieces each time but I always let out a bright smile of hope to conceal my despair about Osamudiamen’s situation. When Obaseki took office, Edo State was an endemic zone for human trafficking and irregular migration. Edo was number one on the list of hotspots globally. Obaseki came in and declared irregular migration and human trafficking a crisis and an existential threat. As usual, all the Lions and Tigers who benefited from the malady were up in arms against Obaseki. They fought him hard. They maligned him. Political strategists told Obaseki to beat a retreat on the matter in the interest of his reelection for a second term in office. Obaseki damned the political consequences of his fight against the powers fueling human trafficking in Edo State and believe me, they were fierce lions and tigers indeed. Today, Edo is no longer on the list of regions endemic with human trafficking problems. We used to be number one, but now we don’t even make the inglorious list anymore. Obaseki fought this among many battles for the good of our people at the risk of his political future. But in the end, ‘NA GOD WIN.’ So, permit me to ask my recurring question again: Will the people whose children have been saved by the battle that has dealt a blow on human trafficking, their children, brothers, sisters, and friends sit idly and allow the Lions and Tigers return and haul our children back to slavery? The jury is out and the battleground is the gubernatorial election on September 21, 2024. Sadly, not many will read this. Our people are inundated by a deluge of tall tales and they can hardly find space to accommodate the Primacy of Truth. Watch out for Part 15. *Obaseki attributes partnership with federal, local security agencies to administration’s successes* _*…hails military, other security agencies for peace, law, order in Edo*_ _*…insists on war against cultism, recommits to devt of Benin Port Project*_ The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has attributed the remarkable progress witnessed across various sectors of the State’s economy to his administration’s ability to maintain peace, law and order, which he noted was made possible through the seamless collaboration between the government, federal security agencies and the state-owned security outfits. Obaseki said this while receiving the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Hasan Bala Abubakar, with top security chiefs in the State, who were on a courtesy visit, at the Government House, in Benin City, the Edo State capital. The governor, who restated the need for peace and security for the growth and development of any society, said his government will continue to partner with security agencies in the State, supporting them to effectively deliver on their role of ensuring peace and order and protecting the lives and property of the citizenry. He said, “I thank you and your men on ground for the services they have been rendering to us in Edo State. I recall a few years ago when we had internal security challenges and requested that you deploy some of your men to help us deal with the situation; the cooperation we received was total. “The State has witnessed remarkable improvement in the last eight years and the underlying factor for this is our ability to have law and order in the State. The Law and order we have experienced in Edo State has been as a result of the peaceful collaboration with sister agencies in the State. “Collaboration between the federal security agencies and our own State security agencies is seamless and responsible for the huge success recorded as it has helped us maintain the calm and peaceful atmosphere we witnessed in Edo State today. “Without law and order, it will be difficult to have any meaningful development. I thank your agency and other federal security agencies and our local security agencies for the commitment and dedication to making Edo State one of the safest in Nigeria.” According to him, “We continually have security meetings in the State using data to analyze our security situation as we have gone digital. We sit, review data, and make decisions based on the data received. “At our last Council security meeting, data available to us showed that cultism is the biggest security challenge facing us. The Edo State House of Assembly (EDHA) has helped us with a law prohibiting cultism and today, the task force set up has already started operations to take care of cultism. “Without the support we continue to receive from your men, it will be difficult to achieve the kind of progress we have made today. We will do all to ensure we retain you here and make Edo a host where quality officers will want to come and serve.” Reiterating the need for sustained partnership with the security outfits, Obaseki further stated, “We have a few challenges like the one that relates to the maritime border, particularly the Ovia River axis where we have been having running battles with bandits and terrorists in the last few months. People are using the Ovia River to bring arms and engage in all sorts of nefarious activities. We will need more surveillance in that axis and need your support.” He added, “We need calm in that axis because we want to commence the development of the Benin River Port and it's important to guarantee the safety and security of our partners that will be working in that axis. I thank you and your men for the security of the Benin Airport as our flights have increased tremendously.” In his response, Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Hasan Bala Abubakar commended Governor Obaseki for his developmental strides across the State, noting that having served in Edo in the past, he was impressed with the transformation of the State today. He said, “Returning today as the 22nd Chief of Air Staff, I am highly impressed by Benin's transformation into a modern and vibrant city that still retains its ancient charm that preserves the cultural heritage of the Benin Kingdom. “The new face of Benin reflects your dedication to good governance, visionary leadership, and prioritization of infrastructural development in Edo State. The essence of my visit is to perform an oversight function on the operations and challenges of 107 Air Maritime Group in Benin City. “I thank the government and people of Edo State for their cooperation and support all through the year. I appreciate you gesture, sacrifice, and love you have for the Air Force.” *PHOTO CAPTION* *DSC_01* Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki (right) presenting a souvenir to Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Hassan Bala Abubakar, during a courtesy visit, at the Government House, Benin City, Tuesday, June 4, 2024. *DSC_02* L-R: Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Hasan Bala Abubakar; Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki; his Deputy, Engr. *Obaseki bans activities of Okaigheles, declares war on cultism* *_...passes anti-cultism law as Edo loses over 150 persons to cult-related activities in five months_* *_...sets up special task force to combat cultism_* The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has banned the activities of Okaigheles (Youth Leader) in Edo South Senatorial District of the State, as part of a renewed effort to tackle cultism in the State. Obaseki disclosed this while speaking with journalists after a closed-door meeting with security Chiefs in Edo State, at the Government House in Benin City, the Edo State capital. Noting that at least 150 persons have been lost to cult-related activities and homicide since January 2024 till date, Obaseki said his government has declared a total war against cultism and has set up a special task force of the Security Council headed by the Director of the Department of State Security (DSS) that will from tonight review every cult related incident in the State. He said, “We have just finished the Security Council Meeting where we reviewed the security situation in Edo State since January 2024 with particular emphasis on the security activities in Edo in May 2024. “From the security management report which was considered in our security meeting, we still have a nagging issue in Edo State which is cultism. The incidence of cultism is very high. “What is particularly worrisome about cultism is the related homicide that goes with cult-related activities. From January to date, we have lost over 150 people to cult-related activities and homicide. We can't tolerate and accept this situation anymore. “The Council today, amongst its decisions, has decided to go full blast against cultists and cultism in the State. We have now passed an anti-cultism law in Edo State and that law will be implemented to its fullest.” Obaseki added, “We have set up a special task force of the security council headed by the Director of DSS that will from tonight review every cult related occurrence in the State. We will look at all the data, incidents, perpetrators, and those behind these activities, and will make all resources available and leave no stone unturned. According to him, “Related to cult activities are activities of Okaigeles in Edo South. The Council has prohibited forthwith activities of Okaigeles in Edo State. Anybody who claims he is an Okaigele, operating in any community will be dealt with strictly by the law. “The outcome of our security council meeting today is that the State has declared full war on cultists and Okaigeles in Edo State.” The Edo State Commissioner of Police, Funsho Adegboye, reassured that the security agencies will implement the decision of the State Security Council without fear or favour. He said, “We are happy that the State has passed into law the anti-cultism bill as cultists had a field day in the State but this law has a stiff penalty for anybody involved in the act. “His Excellency has equally directed that no matter how highly placed any individual is, they will be taken to Court and such a person will face the penalty. “On the issue of the Okaigheles, we have been having problems with them as you can't even separate them from cultism and the Council has agreed that they are banned. Anybody arrested will be prosecuted diligently. Council also agreed to have a taskforce headed by the Director of the DSS.” The Police Commissioner added, “This is to give members of the public assurances to carry on with their lawful activities. No time frame is given to the taskforce as long as the activities of these people persist. We will collaborate with the judiciary and correctional centers as they will help us with the new law and the time for free bail for cultists is over. We are happy about this law and confident that it would change the attitude of cultists.” *PHOTO CAPTION* L-R: Edo State Commissioner of Police, Funsho Adegboye; Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki; his Deputy, Engr. *Special education teachers commend Obaseki, hail reforms, 30 percent special allowance* _*…salutes commitment to workers’ welfare*_ _*...to honour Obaseki at annual conference*_ The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has continued to receive commendations for his government’s reforms in the education sector, with the National Secretary of the Special Education Teachers, Dr. Auwalu Danlami, hailing the governor for prioritizing children with special needs in the education reforms and ensuring that they are better supported to learn more. Danlami gave the commendation while speaking to journalists after a courtesy visit to the governor at the Government House, in Benin City, the Edo State capital. Noting that the reforms have improved the quality of education and tackled learning poverty in the State, the National Secretary commended the governor for the 30 percent special allowance to special teachers in the State. He said, “We are here to express our gratitude to the governor for what he is doing for special education teachers in the State, paying them 30 percent special allowance in Edo State. He has been providing special teaching kits and learning materials for the teaching of special needs students in the State and these have helped the children learn more.” Calling for more support in the area of providing technological materials for children with special needs in the State, he reassured of sustained collaboration of the teachers. He further invited the governor to their annual national conference, noting, “We are inviting His Excellency to our 35th annual national conference with the theme: Professionalising Special Needs Education Services: The Needs for Technology-Based Skills,” taking place in the State between 3rd and 7th of June 2024.” On his part, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Association, Ngbede Ochoche Anyebe said the teachers are recognizing Governor Obaseki for his developmental stride in various sectors, especially the education sector. He said, “The Edo State Governor has done so much that we can see. Some governors perform on the pages of newspapers but on the field, nothing is there to show but in Edo State, there are testimonies to show the achievement of Obaseki. “The National Association is giving Governor Godwin Obaseki a fellowship award for his good works and services he has provided for the association. “We are here to support the governor because he has done well and his deeds will be remembered long after leaving the seat. He has a special heart for civil servants and we urge him to continue to take care of the welfare of teachers with special needs.” In his response, Obaseki thanked the association for choosing Benin City as the venue for its 35th annual conference and identifying Edo as a State that is advancing and supporting the course of special needs teachers and students. The governor represented by his Special Adviser (SA) on Media Projects, Mr. Crusoe Osagie said, “We thank your association for identifying Edo as a State that is advancing and supporting the course of special needs teachers and students. “We want to thank you for acknowledging the good things he has done especially for the teachers in general and special needs teachers in particular in the State. The governor is very passionate about education. He started his educational reforms from the grassroots, the foundation of basic education level, introducing what is called the EdoBEST Programme, using technology to enhance teaching and learning. “The governor is at the forefront of encouraging technology as tools to teach Edo children as about 60 percent of teachers use tablets to teach in our schools across the State and it shows that the governor has an affinity with technology.” He added, “We thank you for your sacrifice as not every human being has the capacity and ability to deal with the challenge of looking after the kind of special children you're looking after. It requires a lot of patience to do this.” *PHOTO CAPTION* *DSC_01* Representative of Edo State Governor and Special Adviser on Media Projects, Mr. Crusoe Osagie (right) addressing the Special Education Teachers, during a courtesy visit, at the Government House, in Benin City, on Monday, June 3, 2024. *DSC_02* Representative of Edo State Governor and Special Adviser on Media Projects, Mr. Crusoe Osagie (middle) with Special Education Teachers, during a courtesy visit, at the Government House, in Benin City, on Monday, June 3, 2024.

These three names would probably only ring bells in the minds of readers of this piece who are over 50 years old. What about Humphrey Edobor, Christopher Ohenhen, and Augustine Eguavoen? Edo was the melting pot of champions. It was difficult to be a sports superstar in the 1970s and 1980s without some sort of connection with Edo and Delta (then Bendel State). Unfortunately, between the 1990s and the 2000s, the Edo sports genius seemed to have been banished to the distant and marshy place “Where the Crawdads Sing.” From the time when we had several thriving football clubs that mesmerized Nigeria’s soccer fans, including New Nigerian Bank Football Club (NNBFC), Bendel Insurance, and Bendel United, to the point where the NNBFC was relegated and disbanded, Bendel United folded up and Bendel Insurance banished in perpetuity to the lower divisions, Edo State seemed to have permanently lost its sports luster. What had happened? Certainly, our genealogy of being descendants of war and sports heroes had not changed. The variable of how we organized ourselves as a people was however the most likely culprit. In those 1970s and 1980s, Dr. Samuel Ogbemudia was undeniably the linchpin connecting Edo to international sports glory. The renowned humanist, Tai Solarin, once described Ogbemudia in an article published in the Sunday Tribune of September 24, 1973, after the Mid-Western State won the National Sports Festival, and I quote, “Your Excellency, whether it was your intention or not, you are like an all-conquering hero, storming the whole country. You are shattering my contention that the army is now jaded and spent and now holding on, till January 14 1976 to return to the barracks with the speed of a frightened cat.” To produce the Olympic heroes I started this piece with; i.e. Bruce Ijirigho, Godwin Obasogie and Charlton Ehizuelen, among others, Ogbemudia brought a certain kind of passion and devotion to his work as a military governor. For two months, he moved the headquarters of the Mid-West State to Afuze Sports Village; trained with athletes, dined with them, and slept in the same camp with them. The end thereof was a spectacular sports glory. Unfortunately, the glory was soon lost. Our sports descended into the abyss and groped in the dark for nearly 20 years, always falling below the reputation that was firmly established by our forebears. But today, literally today, the 30th day of May 2024, seven and a half years into Governor Godwin Obaseki’s stewardship as Edo State Governor, hope beckons. A victory march led by none other than Her Excellency, Dr. Mrs. Betsy Obaseki has taken off from Western Boys High School and will terminate at the Government House, Benin City. What is the cause of this celebration, you may ask? The Edo State-owned female football team has won the national league for the first time in our history of women's football! Edo Queens, after running a blistering campaign in the 2023/2024 season of the Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL), triumphed over five other best clubs in the country at the Super Six Playoffs to clinch a ticket to represent Nigeria on the continental stage of the CAF Women Champions League. The globally acclaimed Betsy Obaseki Women's Football Tournament (BOWFT) certainly contributed in no small measure to the attainment of this enviable feat. Earlier, within the seven and a half years that Obaseki has held sway as Edo’s Governor, Bendel Insurance, was promoted to the Premier League after spending over ten years in lower divisions, ending the 2023 regular season with a record by going 18 matches unbeaten in the Nigeria Premier Football League. They also fought their way back into continental championship after 34 years of absence from that scene. Obaseki is restoring the Edo glory sector-by-sector, and the area in focus today is sports. As we celebrate our football heroines today, let us spare a thought for Governor Godwin Obaseki, the administrator who set the stage for this indelible history to be created. This brings me back to my recurring question, will these football queens, their parents, brothers, sisters, friends, and all lovers of sports in Edo State and the Diaspora sit idly and watch the Lions and Tigers take our sports back to the rubbish bin of history again? The jury is out and the battleground is the gubernatorial election on September 21, 2024. Sadly, not many will read this. Our people are inundated by a deluge of tall tales and they can hardly find space to accommodate the Primacy of Truth. *Watch out for Part 14.* *_Osagie, a journalist, is the Special Adviser to Governor Godwin Obaseki on Media Projects_* |

A high-profile residential estate was sited in the once sleepy community, I believe with the intent of helping to elevate the neigbourhood to some level of economic and social prominence. Unfortunately, a revamp of the fortunes of that community still did not happen. Rather, the estate, like other valuable assets in this satellite town, was drenched in dust when it was dry and mud, when it rained. A friend of mine in secondary school, Jacob Otabor, who has been an Emergency Room Nurse in the United States of America (USA) for over 25 years, had sited his home on this axis with the hope that things were going to improve. But this was not the case until Governor Godwin Obaseki took office in 2016. Today, one of the longest roads ever constructed in one stretch in Edo State’s history sits pretty in this community. The 18.5km road called Irhirhi Road which connects Airport Road to Sapele Road is the particular effort of Governor Obaseki which endeared him to my classmate, Jacob. This road which traverses Irhirhi, Aruogba, Obazagbon, Oke-Oroma, Obagienevbosa, Ogheghe communities and Sapele Road bypass, across two local government councils, has affected the lives of not less than 50,000 households directly, with the value of their real estate rising by around 5000 percent in some cases. The road has also helped to reduce the suffering of Edo people who are affected by the protracted neglect of Sapele Road construction by the Federal Government. All these bring me back to my recurring question which I hope my readers don’t mind me asking again in this episode: Will the likes of Jacob, other residents of Iyekogba, commuters who use Irhirhi Road as well as their friends and families sit idly and watch the Lions and Tigers return us to the shackles of underdevelopment? *Edo flags off free vaccination against HPV, moves to safeguard girl-child from cervical cancer* The Edo State Government has flagged off free vaccination against Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), targeting children between 9 to 14 years, in a renewed effort to safeguard the girl-child from the scourge of cervical cancer. The Edo State First Lady, Mrs. Betsy Obaseki, who launched the exercise at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City, said the vaccine is safe and will be administered free in all health facilities across the State. She said, “I want to use this opportunity to talk to children and their parents about the safety of the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) vaccine. There have been all kinds of negative talks about the vaccine, creating fear in people to stop them from benefiting from this vaccine. “I stand here to let you know that the vaccine is safe and it is wise for us to vaccinate our children from age 9 to 14 years before they become sexually active. The vaccine isn't available for people above 14 years of age. Let’s use the opportunity to protect the lives and future of our children by coming out for the free vaccination exercise. I urge you to bring your children out to get them vaccinated to keep them safe and well.” The Executive Secretary of Edo State Primary Healthcare Department Agency (EDSPHDA), Dr. Omosigho Izedonwen said about 12,000 women are affected with HPV yearly with 8,000 women succumbing to cervical cancer. Dr. Izedonwen noted that cervical cancer can be stopped by immunizing girls between the ages of nine to 14 years of age with a single shot of the HPV vaccine. He noted, “Across the nation, Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) is raging and killing our women as 12,000 women are infected with the virus, causing cervical cancer every year. About 8,000 women succumb to it which can be stopped by immunizing our girls between the ages of nine to 14 years with a single shot with HPV vaccine.” Dr. Izedonwen said the vaccine which cost about N50,000 is now free across the 18 local government areas of Edo State. “We can stop cervical cancer with this vaccine which is safe and available. The vaccine costs about N50,000 but is now free and available across the 18 local government areas of Edo State. We thank the Governor of Edo State, Mr. Godwin Obaseki for his hard work and partnership. “Those above 14 years of age are not left out. We are also making screening available across the 18 local government areas of Edo State free of charge as those above 21 can walk into any of our facilities to do the screening free. The governor loves the people and has ensured they enjoy quality healthcare.” *PHOTO CAPTION* Edo State First Lady, Mrs. Betsy Obaseki (middle); Executive Secretary of Edo State Primary Healthcare Department Agency (EDSPHDA), Dr. Omosigho Izedonwen (right), with an official of the World Health Organisation, during flag-off of free vaccination against Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), targeting children between 9 to 14 years, in Benin City, on Monday, May 27, 2024.

*Edo EXCO, appointees not dissolved, disregard fake news* The Edo State Government debunks the fake news making the rounds on social media alleging that the State Executive Council (EXCO) and appointees have been dissolved. The rumour is the handiwork of mischief makers and fifth columnists who are out to cause panic and confusion in pursuit of their selfish agenda. The government urges all appointees (Special Advisers, Senior Special Assistants and Special Assistants) to carry on with their duties and responsibilities and disregard the fake and fabricated news. It must be some sort of coping mechanism installed by God himself. When I lost my younger brother, Osaretin, just over seven years ago, life seemed to have lost everything that made it glitter. He was just 34, with two daughters he loved so dearly till he drew his last breath. My heart smouldered with perpetual pain, which I thought will sustain in intensity for years to come. But now, although no day goes by without a thought of him shooting through my mind, the pain is not quite the same. The Benins put it this way: “Ete gha rhie, ai ye obalo.” Translation: Once a festering sore heals, the pains thereof are forgotten. This, I believe, aptly captures the response of some people to the transformation of Edo State in the last seven and a half years. For example, I wonder if any of the homeowners or tenants who were forced to move out of Amagba in Benin City, when the Ugbor-Amagba Road became impassable would ever read these musings of mine. Not less than 22, 000 families were lured into the Amagba neigbourhood beginning around 18 years ago with a tiny road that was constructed by the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC). For many, Amagba was pretty much like what Ajah was to Victoria Island in the early 2000s. It was a promising suburb where middle-class families who could not afford to live in the Government Reserved Areas (GRA) moved to for equivalent comfort. As more and more people thronged in, the NDDC road failed miserably. The NDDC seemed to have underestimated the prospects of Amagba when the road was constructed. A once-promising community quickly became a dingy outpost. Many tried to adapt to the condition by buying SUVs and trucks to wade through the many craters and muddy lakes that littered the path to the small town. Okada and keke modes of transportation soon became the only means to get to people’s homes. I know people who parked their cars with friends and relatives in Ugbor area and hopped on Okada to get home after work. In the morning, they repeated the routine from the other end. They jumped on bikes and tricycles to get out of the dingy dungeon, picked up their vehicles in town and went to work. A while later, it became unbearable for many. They abandoned their homes and moved out. Governor Godwin Obaseki did the maths and figured that opening up that neighbourhood with a befitting road infrastructure will not only provide succour for the distraught residents, it will transform the economy of the community, increase the value of the real estate and boost the State’s economy as a whole. That is exactly what happened after Obaseki completed the Ugbor-Amagba Road in 2020. The governor did not stop there; he began to construct several streets and lanes off Amagba, including Ogunmwenyi, and so many others. As spokesman to Obaseki for nearly eight years, I feel ashamed of myself sometimes when I drive around the State and find so many roads that have been constructed that I never knew about. It is the case of a physician who cannot heal himself. I am supposed to tell Edo people at home and in the Diaspora about the great work that Obaseki is doing to improve the lives of our people but can hardly keep up with the pace with which these projects are being delivered. Copious amounts of projects across various segments of the society. Today, because of Governor Obaseki’s commitment to development, I and thousands of other homeowners and tenants who moved out of Amagba are back to the now bustling neighbourhood. Kindly permit me to ask my recurring question again: Will all of us in Amagba, who have reclaimed our homes and our neighbourhoods; our parents, brothers, sisters and friends sit idly and watch treasury looters and Lions and Tigers take us back to the years when funds were frittered to finance their opulent lifestyles with only trickles left to undertake projects that improve the lives of the vast majority of the people? Governor Godwin Obaseki had during the commissioning the Labour House in Benin City announced the increase of the minimum wage for workers in the State from N40,000 to N70,000, to reflect the current economic realities of the country and cushion the impacts of the harsh economy on the people of the State. In a statement, Edo State Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, Chris Nehikhare, said the payment of the N70,000 minimum wage to the workers, further demonstrates the commitment of the Governor Godwin Obaseki-led administration to the welfare of Edo workers. Hide quoted text According to him, “The Edo State Government has paid the May salaries of workers in the State, reflecting the implementation of the N70,000 new minimum wage. “This is in fulfilment of the promise made by Governor Godwin Obaseki to increase the minimum wage from N40,000 to N70,000 beginning this May, as part of efforts to cushion the impacts of the harsh economy occasioned by fuels subsidy removal and other economic decisions by the Federal Government." "It is also in furtherance of the commitment of the State Government to meet its statutory obligation even before the end of the month,” he added. The commissioner urged workers to be committed to their duties, while contributing effectively to ensuring the governor finishes strong, to reciprocate the gesture by the state government to their welfare.

*Children's Day Message* I heartily felicitate with our children as we celebrate this year's Children's Day. Our children are our greatest assets as they are the future of our dear State and Country, which is why we have spared no resource at building a vibrant State with critical institutions, structures and systems to assure a better future for them. Through our sustained investments as well as bold and pragmatic reforms in the education sector over the past eight years, we have transformed the way our children learn and improved learning outcomes, ensuring they are fully empowered to harness their boundless energy and limitless potential, and compete favourably with their peers across the globe. With over 400,000 of Edo pupils and students benefitting from our basic education reforms, we are embolden to sustain the gains so far recorded and will continue to place the interest and welfare of our children as top priority in our policies and programmes. I wish all Edo children a very happy Children's Day!!! *Godwin Obaseki* _Governor, Edo State_
