The Enugu State Police Command says a student of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), on Saturday drank a substance believed to be ‘Sniper’ insecticide in a bid to take her life. The command’s Public Relations Officer, Ebere Amaraizu, disclosed in a statement made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Enugu on Sunday. He said the student was, however, responding to treatment.

Amaraizu said that the attempted suicide happened at 8.00 a.m. on Saturday. “The victim, Miss Chinwendu Odoh, 24, is from Enugu Ezike in Igbo-Eze North LGA and a 200 level microbiology student of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.

“She allegedly drank a substance believed to be ‘Sniper’ insecticide with a view to taking her life. “Odoh was, however, promptly rushed to the Royal Cross Hospital, Nsukka, where she is being revived,’’ he said.

According to the spokesman, a full scale investigation into the incident is being carried out by the police. “Information from some sympathisers are pointing toward depression over an unresolved issue.

Dubai: A gang of three women have gone on trial accused of luring a man to their apartment, beating him up and stealing Dh57,000, a Dubai court heard on Monday.

The 45-year-old Iraqi victim arrived in Dubai in January of this year and got to know a woman, who he thought was a Swedish student, through a dating app. After they spoke on the phone, they agreed to meet at her apartment in Al Quoz, but when the victim arrived he was met by a group of African women who attacked him.

“The apartment door opened and five African women dragged me inside and physically abused me,” said the Iraqi man.

The Nigerian women slapped him and asked for money. He gave them Dh1,600 to let him go, but they searched his pockets and found Dh55,975.

“They were so happy when they found this amount of cash that they stopped searching me,” he added. “I was terrified that they would kill me so I pretended to have breathing problems so they would let me go,” he added.

The defendants allowed him to leave but he alerted the building’s security and kept waiting in front of the apartment. When Dubai Police arrived, the defendants jumped out of the window to escape.

An Emirati police officer, who responded to the call, said, “The women escaped and we chased them on foot. We arrested three of them and the victim identified them before taking them to Bur Dubai police station

The three Nigerian women aged 30, 33 and 34, were charged with robbery. A verdict is expected later this month.

Meanwhile, Dubai Public Prosecution charged the Iraqi victim with soliciting prostitution.

He was fined Dh5,000 and deported.

Three students of the faculty of law, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria have been kidnapped on Abuja-Kaduna expressway.

The students are said to be in their final year at the university.

Abuja-Kaduna road is notorious for being a flash-point of kidnappings. In April, Mahmood Abubakar, chairman of the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), and his daughter were kidnapped on the road.

The latest incident is coming a few weeks after 510 police officers were deployed in the area.

President Buhari today hosted traditional rulers from the Southwest geo-political zones in the state house, Abuja. The monarchs were led by the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi.

The Ooni had visited the President in Abuja earlier this month to discuss the prevailing insecurity in the Southwest region. At the meeting, the Ooni told state house correspondents that the escalating security challenges in the country had led to some persons and groups beating the drums of war. He clarified that the Yorubas are not interested in war but rather, are only interested in how the security of lives and properties in the region can be improved.

An eight-year-old girl now lies critically ill in hospital in the Adamawa State capital, Yola, after her father cut into her throat with a kitchen knife.

The father who is believed to be suffering a psychological problem after a long time of drug abuse said upon being asked by neighbours why he turned against his daughter, that he just felt like doing it.

“His wife became really worried when the man began to threaten that he would slaughter members of the family one by one,” one of the neighbours, Maryam Umar, said, adding that the man’s wife, Fadimatu, responded by taking all the kitchen knives away. She could not say where the man, Seidu Dan Iya, got the knife with which he sliced the throat of his daughter who now lies between life and death.

The doctor who attended to little Zarau Seidu, Elkannah Patrick, said the girl has a 50-50 chance of survival. The Head of Clinical Services of the FMC, Yola, Dr Yerima Suleiman Yusuf, said the hospital would treat little Zarau free of charge.

He said, “We have a Paupers’ Fund from which we will treat this patient because we realize that the mother is not ready and the father is a psychiatric case.”

Elisha Abbo, the Adamawa North lawmaker who is the youngest Senator in the Nigerian Senate, said this when he received the ICON of Democracy Award which was presented to him by the Intercommunity Awareness for Change and Development Initiative in Abuja last week.

While receiving the award, Abbo said

“It is not just about being in power for the sake of being in power. There is so much responsibility on young leaders, on leaders all over the world. I believe that young people all over the world will be learning from me that there is now a huge gap between wanting to be in power and being in power to deal with the challenges of politics and swimming in the murky waters of Nigerian politics. And I believe that young people will draw (sic) strength from me.”

“You are all aware of what happened a few weeks back where certain things happened and I have been in the public space. I was the number one trending topic on social media. I was number one trending on Twitter and the rest of it but that is leadership. That is politics for you. Don’t be surprised that what you did 10 years ago would come back to haunt you and that is why you must always remember that even though you are a young person now, you will contest elections tomorrow. It is therefore important for you to conduct yourself in a way such that when you win elections tomorrow, somebody will not use what you did 10 years ago to use it to blackmail you or tarnish your hard-earned reputation and image tomorrow.”
