Politics / We Fought A Good Fight! by alpha1616(m): 11:13pm On Jul 01, 2007
Strike action, like war, is an ill wind that blows nobody any good. It cripples the economy of the nation and makes the masses of the people suffer. In a situation where a government has inherited the insensitivity of its predecessor and as such refuses to consider the plight of its people in the institution of its inhuman policies, the people have no choice but to speak to such a government in the very language it understands. It is better for us to endure the temporary hardship that comes with pressing for our rights than to perpetually suffer in silence form the policies of an oppressive government.
As Machiavelli said “Necessary wars are just wars, and the arms of a nation are hallowed when it has no other resource but to fight.” The Nigerian people, having explored fruitlessly all civil avenues of making the government feel their pain had no option left but to make use of the only weapon left in our arsenal- To down tools. So far it has served us well.
I commend the new leader of the NLC comrade Abdulwaheed Ibrahim Omar for remaining steadfast in the struggle and allowing his good sense of judgment get the better of him in the face of pressures from the north to back down. He has proven to be no less valiant and resolute a leader than his predecessor. We the Nigerian people say more power to your elbow.
I also commend the Nigerian people for remaining unwavering, and most importantly peaceful while pressing for their rights.
As we “sheath our swords” let us remain law abiding but also vigilant. Just as there is no way to encourage a drunkard not to behave drunk, so also there is no way to encourage an impenitently insensitive government not to trample on our rights. This “battle” has ended, but the “war” continues. We shall overcome. God be with us.
Religion / Re: The Da Vinci Story Or The Bible Story by alpha1616(m): 9:10am On Jun 23, 2007
I love the book! It's fiction and a good reading. No need to get twisted up if you have faith in your belief.

i agree wt u on dat one.
Religion / The Da Vinci Story Or The Bible Story by alpha1616(m): 9:22pm On Jun 22, 2007
I saw the movie, i read the book, and so i understand everything they are trying to pass accross up to its minutest detail. but can it be true?
anyone who has read the book, or better still, seen the movie THE DA VINCI CODE will not find what i have afore said strange.
The writer of the book Dan Brown along with a teeming number of scientists, reserachers, archiologists, and all what not would have us believe that Jesus was indeed married to mary magdalini and the begat a daughter , and mary fled to paris and her descendants birthed the merovingian dynasty and the blood line continued like that.
They also tried to prove that history as the church would have it,and as it is in the bible,(including all the miracles of Jesus) was as a result of resolutions reached at the council of Nicea presided over by the Emperor Constantine who was in fact a pagan who only wanted to unite the then Roman Empire under one religion.
These claims were substantiated by the support rendered it by the paintings of the renaissance painter Leonardo Da Vinci. one of these is the painting of the last supper where he painted a female figure, supposedly mary magdalini, on the left hand side of Jesus at the table.

one is then forced to ask the question , Could all these be true? for someone with the kind of background i,and indeed a substantial number of us have, have, it would be considered an abberation to believe in such things, but with a plethora of facts such as those presented by these historians, what would/should the rational mind hold true?
Education / Service To My Country Or Suicide? by alpha1616(m): 9:13pm On Jun 22, 2007
i dont know if i'm the only one who has given serious thought to this subject but the issue keeps coming to my mind. People of God, What is the purpose of NYSC?
We were made to climb trees and walk tight ropes, and go on long treks and do a whole lot of jungle stuff that a right thinking human under normal cicumstances would not even imagine unless he were in 14th century Rome!
While in camp we got the news of some lady in Katsina camp who fell off the tree ropes and died instantly. My people, i ask, "why should i go through four, five, or six years of university education, paying all the way through the nose only to end it all by falling from some tree and dying all in the name of "serving my nation", and when i asked questions they told me that 5% casualty rate is expected in all NYSC camps! an apalling response indeed. What kind of nation wastes its citizens(precious human capital) away in purposeless camps in the name of national service?
I still hear that demonic beegle sound in my head every 4:30am.
i had to sleep on some soak-away for three nights(no bathing and brushing)just to get registered. Now tell me, how does that increase NIgeria's foreign exchange earnings?
How does my climbing trees and walking long distances, and singing foolish songs affect the development of my dear conutry?
If u ask me,this whole NYSC thing is some big fraud that ensures constant yearly income for some select, corrupt,& powerful few, and that explains why it has remained in existence despite continued complaints and agitations for its cancellation.
What y'all think?

agreed,  Neyo wrote the song, but she bought it because it kind of fitted into her situatn and she could relate to it.
secondly, if a guy is not irreplaceable, why go through all that stress tellin him,? why not just go ahead and change him? i meannn, that makes sense, don't it?

It was not until recently when there was space in my head to occupy some more extraneous stuff that I really stopped to listen to what Beyonce had to say in her song. I hear the song playing almost everywhere I go, but considering my kind of job, one never really has the luxury of sitting down to songs. So at the end of the day what is left off in my head is just the beat and the rhythm, and of course the “to the left” thing.

I was surprised to hear what I heard on that track. Why go through all that stress to tell a guy not to think he’s irreplaceable? If he were truly replaceable, why not go right ahead and replace him, instead of singing about it, waxing an album and spending close to a quarter of a million dollars on video shoot! I mean, I don’t know if I’m the only one who thinks that way but hey if he’s worth all that stress then he must be truly irreplaceable whether he thinks about it for a second or not!

From all indications, she was referring to JayZ in the song because she was still smarting from the shock she got from the break-up. It wasn’t until I heard the part where she asked him to “drop them keys and hurry up before the taxi leaves” that I was convinced that she was getting nuts. Buy a car for JayZ? A guy who can pay light bills for the whole of Philadelphia and still have enough on his monthly budget to go holidays to Hawaii? What is this girl talking about? If she did that to spite him then it’s just too unfortunate. That was a quite cheap one. She can do better than that!

Politics / The Presidential Debate: Now I've Heard It All! by alpha1616(m): 12:53pm On May 12, 2007
Now I’ve heard it all

A couple of days back I was (as usual) tired after a hard day’s hustle. I slouched in the couch in front of the TV to see what network television had to offer for the day.
It was another presidential debate just as is common in periods like this with every nation when new leaders are about to be elected. The only thing different is what comes out of the mouth of the aspirants when asked questions.
In this case, it was a group of about four aspirants, which included one Major Mojisola Obasanjo (rtd), and one Olapade Agoro ”a man of God” who claimed he had 5 bachelor degrees in various fields and a couple more toppings on it from universities around the world.
The crux of the manifestos of these two aspirants would cause either brain tumor or severe brain damage to anyone if spared more than a second’s thought for. I watched with mounting disgust as the former wife of our incumbent president unbundled her plans for the nation. When asked how she would handle the problem of pervasive poverty, she responded that she would give each Nigerian a plot of land with which to build a house and farm. Each one will eat a part of his farm produce and then sell the rest, and by this, there will be no more poverty in Nigeria! When I heard that, my blood ran cold. At that time, I thought I had heard it all.
The turn of the “man of God” came and he was asked the same question. To my utmost consternation, he responded that to solve the poverty problem he would give a million naira each to every registered voter in Nigeria and as such poverty would be a thing of the past! At this point, I felt a sudden sharp sensation run up from the bottom of my spine to my brain and a nagging headache took off from where that stopped. If a presidential aspirant can talk this way, does it mean that he does not have anyone in his party, community, village, or even his family to educate him about the inflationary implications of this? How in the world could an intending leader conceptualize such things in his mind? …and to come on national television to say such things?
I look at the Nigerian politician and I weep for the future of this country. How are we supposed to develop as a nation when the ideas, policies and plans of those who lead us are so bereft of thought and elementary understanding? What would the international community think of us when they watch our open displays of shame and ignorance? I tried to convince myself that the entire show was a comedy and that they would soon get serious. But the debate ended and that was that. God help us!
