In recent times, it feels like different types of crimes are becoming more visible across Nigeria. From street-level theft and scams to more organized forms of crime, many people are beginning to ask the same question: what is really going on? This is not just about statistics or news headlines anymore — it’s something many people are experiencing or witnessing in their daily lives. Some areas feel less safe than before, while others are struggling with new patterns of crime that didn’t seem so common a few years ago. Many Nigerians believe that one of the biggest drivers is economic pressure. When jobs are scarce and survival becomes difficult, some people — especially young people — end up making desperate choices. Others point to issues like poor security systems, lack of trust in authorities, and weak justice enforcement, which can make crime feel like it has fewer consequences. At the same time, social media and technology have also changed how crimes are carried out and how quickly they spread or gain attention. What used to be local incidents can now become national conversations within hours. But beyond all these opinions, there is still a deeper question that needs honest discussion: Is crime increasing, or are we just seeing and reporting it more than before? |
