Perks of Arsenal lining up in 4-3-3, as compared to 4-2-3-1by SE
There is no cynicism regarding the fact that Arsene Wenger has a colossal squad at his disposal, and, consequently could manipulate however he wants to. The arrival of Sanchez has possibly created the biggest anticipation at the Emirates this summer, and his versatility would be something to look forward to come August 16th. With Ozil entering his 2nd season in the Premier League – and Ramsey coming off a brilliant campaign – Arsenal have every reason to be upbeat about the forthcoming season.
But taking the anticipation levels even further: How will Arsenal lineup, now that they boast the kind of players who have a lot of flair and dynamism to their game?
Additions to the squad from last season don’t mean that Wenger is looking for a change in formation, and he has every right to stick to 4-2-3-1. Deploying such a system has yielded him good results, and the football has been fluid. Hasn’t it? In fact, I wonder whether there is another manager, in the Premier League, who would compromise beautiful, slick and fluid Football for the sake of results.
But, for a change, if Wenger were to change to 4-3-3, for which he has the personnel, the following could be the perks of one of the most dynamic systems in world Football.
The 3-man midfield, in the traditional 4-3-3, is one of the focal points of the system. No other system renders as much dynamism and emphasis on the role of midfielders as this formation does. When Wenger plays 4-2-3-1, which I think he will stick to this season, he deploys two midfielders, whose primary objective is to shield the back four and not
get overly offensive. In 4-3-3 however, he can have one man playing in a relatively deeper role, and 2 other midfielders can roam around and support the attack, primarily. When you see Barcelona playing this system to perfection, there is no better sight in Football. Busquets plays as the deep-lying midfielder, while Iniesta and Xavi roam around to create havoc for their opposing defenders.
Translating that to Arsenal, Wenger has similar personnel in the form of Wilshere and Ramsey – two of whom are brilliant passers. He can use either one of Flamini, Arteta or Diaby as the deep-lying midfielder.
The 3-man frontline picks itself literally. Sanchez can play wide on the right, Giroud up top, and Ozil on the left-hand-side.
Or, now that the Frenchman has made it clear that Wilshere would play as the defensive midfielder for Arsenal this season, Ozil can play alongside Ramsey in that creative role, which would enable Wenger to accommodate Podolski or Cazorla on the left wing, with Sanchez or Walcott playing on the right, and Giroud playing as the center-forward.
Playing 4-3-3 would enable his best players in Ozil, Ramsey and Sanchez to do what they do best – not that it isn’t possible when he deploys 4-2-3-1 – but Arsenal can take their already boastful, stylish football to another level.
Going by the dynamism of the squad at hand for Wenger, the 64-year old manager could shift to 4-3-3, but will he or will he not is the big question?
