Infinix Vs. Tecno - The Nigerian Smartphone War
Some years ago till 2011, smartphones in Nigeria are only for the rich. We have the likes of brands like Samsung (Android), HTC (Windows Phone), and iPhone (iOS) making waves in the Nigerian smartphone world. I tell you, these brands are really expensive and only the rich can afford to use a smartphone in our society.

Early 2012, Tecno unveiled their first smartphone in Nigeria, T1 embedded with Android 2.3.5 Operating System. It was a new dawn for Nigerians but some like me doubted the authenticity of Tecno phones at first. The conventional Tecno-branded phones we have been having in Nigeria before they unveiled the Android were very cheap small phones that are practically unreliable then.

However, Tecno's smartphones unveiling is like a new dawn for Nigeria that no one expected before it happened. I could remember, even the least expected people bought Android smartphones in the era of Tecno. Tecno enjoyed monopoly and enormous market surge in their first months because they were the only one providing cheap smartphones in Nigeria.

However, brands like Infinix also joined the league as time goes on and we now have Innjoo penetrating with the favour of Jumia partnership. Infinix came just like some other brands then but it seems it has come to stay. They have come to challenge Tecno's monopoly in Nigeria's smartphone market.

Even though Tecno came out of the shadows of cheap smartphones to produce classy and expensive Phantoms, Infinix is not resting to. Infinix's latest release, Infinix Zero, got so much awareness for weeks including Infinix ambassadors, sponsored blog posts, various ads and even partnership with Konga. Infinix Zero's release got enormous pre-orders and orders that made the Infinix brand an household name in Nigeria.

Infinix is not yet done with their packages with the Infinix Hot's awareness coming on heels after the release of Infinix Zero.

The war of brands is getting hotter in the Nigerian smartphone market, stay tuned as more brands like Innjoo might join.

However, it is important that you note that Tecno also has a stake in the Infinix brand. So, they are kind of interrelated.

All noise was due to the existing data balance with the resellers.

GUYS will sell 750mb for 1k. Watchout for Minor Resellers and Major Dealers soon. Mtn just made this business lucrative for the resellers.

Imagine Luluosas selling to Corporate organizations only. Or a smart guy dealing with individuals like me on possibly 3 or more fronts using 3 or more POS.

IT IS A GAME OF NUMBERS. Economics of Scale is the answer.

VocalWalls:
Now that there's an MTN clamp down, some resellers are now selling even cheaper than they used to, before the clamp down.

Some sold 1400 for 1gig, now I'm seeing 1300.

Obviously, the price crash had no negative effect.

Minor changes in this repressive and regressive policy doesn't make the average Nigerian dumb. We are still street-smart and business saavy.

THE POLICY IS STILL YOUNG AND IN ITS INFANCY. By November one guy, 1 smart Nigerian Guy will upstage the new repressive and regressive mtn policy. WE HAVE A WAY OF GOING AROUND POLICY BUMPS AND HURDLES.

Just chill. You paid mtn agent you will witness new dimensions in the face of this new repressive and regressive policy.

Ymodulus:
You can't say that for sure octavo.

In a capitalist system of market there is always bound to be freedom of price. Even Mtn understands this.

To me I feel the problem is that we are in a country where an Organization can just come out, change rules or policy without properly notifying her customers and they will work away with it. Even our lawyers are not helping matters. You cant pay them a token to sue a company even when its apparently clear that they have much to benefit.

Now is not the time to trade complains or blames. Every wise business man should know that anything is bound to happen in business. And should prepare well.
Now its time to discuss the way forward for the different set of people.

1. The set of people that have about 30 - 75 gig
2. Those with 1- 30gig
3. Those yet to renew their subscription
4. Those who just renewed.

Solutions
Looking at all possible ideas there are only 3 ways to go about this and anything aside this three is just futile.

1. Sue Mtn
2. Plead with NCC or Mtn to let us finish our current Data and then give us a set date after which the new system will kick off.
3. Ask Ncc to force Mtn to re-compensate Us.
4. Sell 10GB only at 1Gb per user and at a Higher price.

Let's just say DataStrike just started and we need a Nigerian Data Congress with a president, protest and lodge a complain.

Dont rewrite history for me.

Buhari and OIC

Although Babangida took the rap for Nigeria's sneaky upgrade to full membership of the Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC), according to a study on Nigeria funded by the US Defense Department in the early 1990s, it was actually Buhari who without any regard whatsoever for thesensibilities of Nigerians of other faiths, submitted the application to upgrade Nigeria's membership from the observer status it had enjoyed since the Gowon regime to full membership. The OIC's review of the application was concluded after Babangida's palace coup. Rather than reverse Buhari's action, Babangida quietly allowed Nigeria's new status as a full-fledged member of the OIC to stand.

Buhari's OIC action exposed him as a religious zealot, who will have no qualms in rousing and ginning up Sharia issues, quiescent for several years now, following its aggressive unveiling in Zamfara, where Buba Bello Jangebe's wrist was amputated for stealing a cow, and Safiya Husseini was sentenced to die by stoning for adultery while her co-participant in the act was not prosecuted because he was male.-

"I will continue to show openly and inside me the total commitment to the Sharia movement that is sweeping all over Nigeria," Buhari said, quoted in press reports."God willing, we will not stop the agitation for the total implementation of the Sharia in the country," Buhari said.

She was also the great, great,
great grandaughter of Thomas
Babington Macaulay, the founder
of the first secondry school in
Nigeria, Christian Missionary

She was also the great, great, great, great granddaughter of Bishop Samuel Ajayi Crowther, the first African Bishop of the Anglican Church, the. man who first translated the Holy Bible to yoruba, the man who first translated the Book of Common Prayer to yoruba, the first Nigerian to be awarded a Doctorate of Divinity from Oxford University in 1864 and the man who introduced Christianity to the Lagos Colony (as it then was) and to most of south-western Nigeria. In terms of heritage, excellent blood lines and good stock you can’t do much better than that.
