EducationUniversity Of Abuja Saga: Funding, Planning Or Leadership? by amicnetwork(op): 11:54pm On Feb 21, 2013
Prior to her establishment on January 1st, 1988 [under University of Abuja Act - No. 106(1992) cap U2 LFN(2004)] as a dual mode University with the mandate to run both conventional and distance learning academic programmes, University of Abuja took off from a temporary site made up of three blocks of building meant for a primary school in Gwagwalada, tagged the "mini - campus". Academic activities started on the mini - campus in 1990 and in the same year, an expanse of land covering over 11,800 hectares along the Abuja - Airport road was allocated for the development of its main campus which now runs alongside the mini-campus.
Let me shock you! And I hope I'm right about this. University of Abuja has found her way into the whims of the national media as a role model to other universities of the federation; all courses rightly accredited, state-of-the-art facilities, observably conducive learning environment, and highly reputed teaching staff. In fact, if you’ve been to the school, travelling abroad for study is apparently not an option *sneaky grin*
Since conception, over two decades have passed: decades of restless fights between the ideal UniAbuja and the real UniAbuja; between the ‘Prestigious’ UniAbuja and the ‘Glorified Primary School’ which I guess by mistake became a University, better worse, of the Federal Capital Territory of Nigeria. As though a vague idea that wasn’t properly given apt consideration, it started running her courses. For such a prestigious University with less than 300 words of description on Wikipedia.com and practically no much information an outsider can lay hands on, of course it attracted various Nigerian students who probably were fed up of staying at home after seeking admission for about half a decade.
As a final year student of such an institution, you guess I should be proud enough to write about this, right? Probably not. Especially when amidst the pain and anxiety of being in the fifth year of a four year course for just no reason, in a department that has been visited not more than once by the NUC accreditation team, wondering what certificate one will graduate with, and the twinge of seeing your mates in other schools far ahead of you; sometimes making jest of the so-called ‘Prestigious University of The Federal Capital Territory’ you once thought was something to brag about. So pathetic!
Well, what seemed to be like a two weeks internal warning strike last year, in agitation for accreditation of the Engineering, Medicine, Vet. Medicine, and Agric. Science departments gradually became the long awaited third world war in this part of the globe; a critical and pitiable case second to none, a fight that has soon become an open show of authority between the school management and students’ parents/guardians *Thumbs up to those supportive parents*. Of course who would pardon such a ridiculous act of wasting the supposed productive time of innocent youths who are being unapologetically frustrated? If I were a parent, *biting my finger* …let me spare my words…you really have no idea what I’d do.
It’s been over three months of academic suspension; a period during which the final year students would have graduated, returning students moved to the next level, and new students admitted , but we all wish it worked out.
Phew! I’ve complained enough; what I actually hate to do. Now what do you think is wrong with a 25 year old institution that's still fighting to gain grounds among the committee of schools? Could it be due to the lack of fund from the federal government? Lack of proper planning by the founding fathers? Or lack of leadership?
Of course we all know nothing works without the initial investment of money but you really want me to believe that Nigeria has become as poor as not being able to fund the only federal university in her Federal Capital Territory? Or what happened to all the allocated funds we heard about?
Okay...may it's not a problem of funding, it's that of planning but how on earth can you convince me that the founding fathers were so immature that UniAbuja was the first university project they embarked on in the history of this great country, Nigeria. Probably because those who founded OAU, University of Ibadan, Lagos, UNN and the likes were long dead and gone or the contractors were on trip to, let's say, Dubai for a treat to relax their exhaustive brain after the completion of those mega universities that has become the best institutions in the country.
Or could it be a problem of leadership? In the words of the leadership expert, John C. Maxwell, everything rises and falls on leadership. But the question is, has this institution ever risen before talk more of falling? Does that mean leadership is totally absent? If it is, how cursed can an institution be, operating for 25 years without a competent leader at least for once who will shake off the mediocre status of this tiring entity called a university.
If you ask me, I'd really not know what to say but that there is some kind of an unforeseen undertone to the confusion beclouding University of Abuja. Prayers have been made by Muslims, Christians, Pagans, and everyone else to salvage this dream-killing body but worse scenarios keeps repeating themselves leaving everyone in the system screaming "God! What do we do?"
HERE IS MY ADVICE
To the Federal Government, University of Abuja Senate, and some others in position, we are yet to see what has been called UNIVERSITY OF ABUJA. I'm not giving up on the institution. No not at all; I believe it can still find her way right into the books of history and still become a role model to other institutions in the country but now, I'm not sorry to say we are way too far from that reality. But here is what I think will be helpful: there is need for total reshuffling of the system; from the Vice Chancellor to the Assistant Lecturers and Lab. Attendants. I do not mean to say all of them should be sacked but if you deem fit, please find them another job *smiles*. Now here is what I think will work best:
"Some staff of the five best Universities in Nigeria should be transferred down here to take over the system and build what they have built before (at least this time it should be easier)"
At the time of this writing, other options I can't think of but I think this will go a long way.
I celebrate Nigeria and I mean this...I celebrate the emerging UniAbuja.
Peace!
