Liverpool dominate Premier League team of the season so far Trent Alexander-Arnold Jordan Henderson Andy Robertson Liverpool The runaway leaders have set a scintillating pace at the top of the table and boast plenty of players in this side - but who else has made the cut BERND LENO- Arsenal Bernd Leno may have dropped a clanger against Chelsea on Sunday but the German has been one of the bright spots in an otherwise disastrous Arsenal season, alongside striker and captain Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang. The defence under Unai Emery, Freddie Ljungberg and Mikel Arteta has been calamitous and the Gunners would have been in a much worse position in the table had it not been for Leno making save after save in goal. Trent Alexander-Arnold - Liverpool The best right-back in the Premier League on talent and on form, and now quite possibly the best right-back in the world too. One of Liverpool's key attacking weapons as they have made sensational headway at the top of the table. Goals, assists, the 21-year-old has got the lot. Caglar SOYUNCU - Leicester City One of the discoveries of the season for Leicester City, the Turkish defender was reluctantly thrown in at the deep end as the Foxes could not find an adequate replacement for Manchester United-bound Harry Maguire. He has been consistent, smart in possession and one of the main reasons why – until the visit of Liverpool at least – Leicester's defence has been the best in the league. Virgil van Dijk - Liverpool The reigning UEFA Men's Player of the Year Award holder, Van Dijk has worked his way up to become the best centre-back in world football. Equally assured in possession as he is dominant in his defending, he has also pitched in with three goals this Premier League season. Andy Robertson - Liverpool The Scotland captain works beautifully in tandem with Alexander-Arnold on the other side, delivering high-quality ball after high-quality ball for Liverpool's attackers to feast on. Relentless stamina, tigerish defending and a smart football brain all mark out Robertson as one of the picks of the season. JORDAN Henderson - Liverpool He has lifted three big trophies over his head in 2019 as Liverpool captain and could well have the Premier League trophy in his hands come the end of this season. He has gone under the radar as the front three – and full-backs – claim most of the plaudits in this side but he sets the tone and the tempo. Kevin De Bruyne - Manchester City Undoubtedly the most talented player in the Manchester City and the Premier League as a whole, De Bruyne deserves better than to be suffering in Liverpool's slipstream. On a personal level, he has been hugely impressive with goals, assists and chance creation – even as his team-mates are surrendering their title to Liverpool in meek fashion. A genius at the peak of his powers. JACK Grealish - Aston Villa Perhaps one of the more unexpected names on this list but Grealish is deserving of any credit that comes his way. While Aston Villa may well be heading straight back through the relegation trap door, Grealish has demonstrated that he has the talent and fortitude to thrive at Premier League level. He is their creative hub and should they go down then he will be not short of suitors in the top flight. Sadio Mane - Liverpool A remarkable big-game player, Mane has held his level more consistently this season than either of his strike partners, Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino. That is not to say they have played badly, but Mane has been at his brilliant best all season long. Not only in terms of goals, assists and chances created but also in his pressing and setting the tempo for Liverpool's in-game strategies. RAHEEMSterling - Manchester City Not only a scorer of goals but a creator of chances, Sterling has carried the burden up top for Pep Guardiola this season with distinction. In the absence of Leroy Sane and Sergio Aguero, and the lack of form in Bernardo Silva, Sterling has at times had to single-handedly carry the fight forward for City. Jamie Vardy - Leicester City There are not many strikers in world football that can claim to be quicker, sharper and better at 32 than they were in their mid-20s but Jamie Vardy can. A one-time Premier League winner, he is perhaps playing better than ever under Brendan Rodgers. No player has scored more Premier League goals in 2019 than the ex-England man and he is out in front as top scorer this season. Source -- GOAL.COM |
