Network Broadband Service Provider, Swift Networks has announced the launch of a free WiFi package for users in Lagos.

The service, named Red Cheetah, will give users a daily data limit of one gigabyte on the Red Cheetah app- which can be downloaded on app stores.

Dangote Cement today released its financial statements for the year ended December 2017.

Revenue increased from ₦615 billion in 2016 to ₦805 billion in 2017. Profit before tax increased from ₦180 billion in 2016 to ₦289 billion in 2017.

Profit after tax jumped massively from ₦142 billion in 2016 to ₦204 billion in 2017.
The company is proposing a dividend for ₦10.50 per share.

Facebook is making it easier for video posters to monetize their videos, further luring them away from competitors like YouTube.

The company announced in a blog post on Monday that it's rolling out a paid subscription feature and ways for advertisers to find sponsorship opportunities for its creators over the next few months. The tests will begin with a small group before expanding widely.

"As creators spend more time making content and engaging with their fans, they want to be able to earn money for their work," Fidji Simo, vice president of product and Sibyl Goldman, director of entertainment partnerships, wrote. "We plan to offer a range of monetization options to serve the wide range of creators at various stages of their journeys."
Currently Facebook video creators can include sponsored content, and ad breaks are included in for some creators making shows for premium video section Watch.

The new options will give viewers a way to pay creators monthly for additional content, including more exclusive clips and a badge to show they are a "supporter." In addition, a new feature will help connect companies and video creators for branded content. Creators will be able to create a portfolio showing off what kinds of content they can make, and advertisers can search and find a right fit.

Other updates for creators include a system for them to to manage content rights, a way to designate top fans and an expansion of the Facebook Creator app for Android users.

The move happens as YouTube is cracking down on who can advertising revenue on its platform over quality issues.

Popular e-commerce platform, Jumia, could have a new owner soon, as its parent company, Rocket Internet is considering floating it through an Initial Public Offer (IPO).

This is coming few months after Jumia’s major competitor Konga was acquired by Zinox after a month-long negotiation with major investors, Naspers and AB Kinnevik. Also recently online classified ads platform OLX also announced it is shutting down operations in Nigeria.
Why the sale?
The IPO is in line with Rocket’s mode of exit from mature portfolio companies. HelloFresh, in November last year was IPO’d on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange in a deal valued at €1.7 billion. Deliveryhero, another company was listed on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange at a valuation of €994 million.

Jumia is yet to attain profitability since its creation. The company made a loss of €81 million according to a 9M 2017 investor presentation by Rocket.

Lesson 1. Determining the Legal Structure of Your Business
1.1 The 4 Most Common Business Structures
The legal structure of your business will determine what you need to do to register with the government, how you’re taxed, what risks you need to take on, and so on.

The four most common business structures are the sole proprietorship, the partnership, the limited liability company (LLC), and the corporation. Each legal structure has its pros and cons, and it’s worth understanding every one before you make a decision. Many people starting a business will choose to register either as an LLC or a corporation, for example, because those two structures will give owners limited liability protection. But on the other hand, there’s a lot more paperwork and expense associated with a corporation or LLC.

1. Sole Proprietorship
Example: Freelance graphic design.

What it is: A sole proprietorship is a business that’s owned and run by one person, where the government makes no legal distinction between the person who owns the business and the business itself. It’s the simplest way to operate the business. You don’t have to name your business anything other than your own, personal name, but if you want to, you can give it its own distinctive name by registering what’s called a Doing Business Name (DBA). (We’ll get back to that in the “Choosing & Registering Your Business Name” section.)

Pros and Cons of Sole Proprietorship
Pros: It’s easy and inexpensive to create a sole proprietorship because there’s only one owner, and that owner has complete control over all business decisions. Tax preparation is also pretty simple since a sole proprietorship is not taxed separately from its owner.

Cons: It can be dramatically more difficult to raise money and get investors or loans because there’s no legal structure that promises repayment if the business fails. Also, since the owner and the business are legally the same, the owner is personally liable for all the debts and obligations of the business.

How taxes work: The individual proprietor owns and manages the business and is responsible for all transactions, including debts and liabilities. Income and losses are taxed on the individual’s personal income tax return at ordinary rates. In addition, you are also subject to payroll taxes, or self-employment taxes, on the money you earn. (More on self-employment taxes later.)

2. Partnership
Example: Multiple doctors maintaining separate practices in the same building.

What it is: A partnership is a single business where two or more people share ownership, and each owner contributes to all aspects of the business as well as shares in the profits and losses of the business.

Pros and Cons of Partnership Business
Pros: It’s generally pretty easy to form a business partnership, and it doesn’t tend to be super expensive, either. Having two or more people equally invested in the business’ success allows you to pool resources. It also means you have access to more than one person’s skill set and expertise.

Cons: Just like a sole proprietor, partners have full, shared liability if the business goes south. That also means that partners aren’t just liable for their own actions, but also the actions of their partner(s). There is a variant on partnerships called a limited liability partnership, or LLP, that protects against that — which is how most law firms are organized, for example.

Finally, when more than one person is involved in decisions, there’s room for disagreement — which means it’s important to have an explicit agreement over how the obligations and earnings will be split, especially if/when things go wrong.

How taxes work: To form a partnership, you have to register your business with your state, a process generally done through your Secretary of State’s office.

3. Limited Liability Company (LLC)
Example: A small design firm.

What it is: LLCs are a type of business structure that’s more complex than sole proprietorships and partnerships, but less complex than corporations. They are called “pass-through entities” because they’re not subject to a separate level of tax. Most states don’t restrict ownership on LLCs, and so members can include individuals, corporations, and even other LLCs and foreign entities. Most states also permit “single-member” LLCs, those having only one owner.

Pros and Cons of LLC
Pros: As the name suggests, owners of an LLC have limited liability, meaning that they personally are not responsible for any financial or legal faults of the business. This reduction in risk is what makes an LLC a very popular business structure.

Cons: LLCs are often more complex than sole proprietorships or partnerships, which means higher initial costs, and certain venture capital funds are hesitant to invest in LLCs because of tax considerations and the aforementioned complexity. That being said, they’re simpler to operate than a corporation because they aren’t subject to as many formalities.

How taxes work: LLCs have the benefit of a “flow-through” tax treatment, meaning that the owners – not the LLC – are the ones who are taxed. Having only one level of tax imposed makes taxes easier.

4. Corporation
Example: Microsoft, Coca-Cola, Toyota Motor, and almost all well known businesses.

What it is: A legal entity that is separate and distinct from its owners, and has most of the rights and responsibilities that an individual possesses (to enter into contracts, loan and borrow money, sue and be sued, hire employees, own assets, and pay taxes.) It’s more complex than the other business structures, and it’s generally suggested for larger, established companies with multiple employees.

Pros and Cons
Pros: They make seeking venture financing easy. They also provide the best protection for personal assets, as the founders, directors, and stockholders are (usually) not liable for the company’s debts and obligations – only the money and resources they’ve personally invested.

Cons: Because they’re much more complex than other business structures, they can have costly administrative fees, and more complicated tax and legal requirements.

How taxes work: Corporations are required to pay federal, state, and in some cases, local taxes. There are two different types of corporations: “C corporations” and “S corporations.” C corporations are subject to double taxation – so any profit a C corporation makes is taxed to the corporation when earned, and then is taxed to the shareholders when distributed as dividends. The corporation does not get a tax deduction when it distributes dividends to shareholders. Shareholders cannot deduct any loss of the corporation, but they are also not responsible directly for taxes on their earnings – just on the dividends they give to shareholders. S corporations, on the other hand have only one level of taxation.

The increasing number of corruption scandals rocking the Muhammadu Buhari administration has further exposed the dishonest integrity of a man, many love to describe as Mai gaskiya but who to the disappoint of most, have progressively turned out in a reality to be Mai kariya. The latest revelation about the re-instatement Abdul Rasheed Maina, a fugitive public servant accused of stealing billions of naira from the pensions of senior citizens only adds to the sad tales of corrupt practices in high places under the Buhari administration. In order to keep his crowed of devoted Buharideens in the line of devotion because of a visible expression of dissatisfaction and audible murmuring among the rank and file, President Buhari, a master of the game of minds, gave his followers the usual opium. He belatedly ordered the sack of Abdulrasheed Maina and asked for explanations surrounding the entire saga and like the SGF Babachir Lawal grass cutting affair and the Ikoyi cash dump controversy, case is closed. Once again the President has succeeded in shifting the blame for this scandal to the cabal whom everyone blames for every wrong while crediting him for everything right.

While campaigning to be president, Muhammadu Buhari rightly identified corruption as one of the causes of Nigeria’s stunted growth and arrested development. He was so passionate about anti-corruption that Nigerians gave him a chance to prove his credibility by voting out the incumbent Goodluck Jonathan, under whose watch, corruption took a hydra headed monstrous dimension and proportion. Nigerians heaved a sigh of relief and hoped for a new beginning with a leader whom they believed was going to be incorruptible, just and fair to all in the discharge of his responsibilities as head state and duties as head of government.

Once in government, it becomes abundantly clear that President Muhammadu Buhari lacks the understanding of the theme of his most passionate electoral promise, corruption. Through his body language, association, public speeches, appointments, policies and programs, Buhari has revealed his lack of adequate knowledge of the proper definition of corruption and the wisdom to tackle it holistically. Otherwise, the President should have known that at the root of corruption is sectionalism; a most unfortunate practice that he has elevated to a near state policy.

Arsene Wenger's 21-year old stay in Arsenal is about to be reconsidered by the club management as outlined by recent reports.

Arsene Wenger has said that despite signing a new two year deal in summer time, his performance will be evaluated by the Arsenal board at the end of the season, prompting fresh speculation over his future, The Independent reports.

After receiving his third FA Cup in 4 years, Wenger signed a new deal to extend his 21 year reign by an additional 2 years.

Last season the Gunners concluded outside the top four for the first time in Wenger’s period and the campaign was stressed by off the field protests against the manager’s extended time at the club.

At the club’s annual normal meeting, Wenger said he would “see where I go from there,” on the scheduled post-season assessment”.

He added, “I am 21 years at the club and I want to feel that I do well, and see what the board thinks of my performance.

“After that we decide where we go from there. But of course my desire has always been to respect my contracts.

“I must tell you, my hunger, my commitment is bigger than ever,” the 68-year-old added. “But I will accept that of course when you have been at the club a long time, everybody questions that.

Harrowing footage has emerged of a spiritual leader accidentally boiling himself to death in a giant wok during an endurance stunt in Malaysia.
 
Lim Ba, a 65-year-old Taoist psychic guru, was placed inside the large steel wok - heated on boiling water - to prove his "physical endurance" to his followers on Monday outside the Kuala Sanglang Qinglong temple.
 
Guru Lim Ba had reportedly performed the boiling stunt a number of times with a personal record of 75 minutes inside the steamer.
 
But this time, onlookers heard frantic knocks coming from inside the pan after 30 minutes and pulled Lim out unconscious.
 
The clip shows devotees in white suits desperately pulling Lim from the wok as he shakes in pain and fire rages below him.
 
The cult leader was rushed to hospital but was later pronounced dead from a suspected heart attack. He had also suffered second degree burns.
 
His devastated son Kang Huai, 32, said the family had pleaded with him to stop the bizarre ritual but he always refused.
 
Kang said: "The sounds coming from inside the wok were not regular and not normal so we knew there was something wrong.

"By the time the ambulance arrived, my father had stopped breathing. He underwent a heart bypass last year due to on-and-off breathing difficulties.

"My mother Ch’ng Siew Hong, my sisters and I are very sad. Our cheerful father has left us forever."
 
Lim had reportedly mastered the stunt over the last decade but it is not known why he failed at the latest routine filmed in the Malaysian town of Ayer Tawar.
 
Daughter Wei Ling, 37, said her father had been feeling unwell on the drive to to the temple and had "lost his appetite".
 
She added: ‘’He went ahead with the entertainment for his fans. He was happy to see them and they loved him.''
 
The temple has now cancelled all entertainment as a mark of respect for Lim.
 
Taoist officials said the steaming ritual was "not mainstream" but more of a "magic performance".
 
Federation of Taoist Associations of Malaysia president Tan Hoe Chioew said: "This steaming man ritual is rarely performed, and I dare not comment on what preparations are needed before you perform this. In general it is not advisable."

The General Overseer, King of King Deliverance Church Gbonum-Ulepa Ntezi in Ishielu local government part of Ebonyi State‎, Prophet Emmanuel Chukwudi, has unmasked the candidate to win the November 18 Governorship election in Anambra state.


Chukwudi claimed that‎ the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, governorship candidate in Anambra State, Mr. Oseloka Obaze will win the election.

Messi lost last night’s award to Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo, The Real Madrid man capped off an extraordinary 2017 with the ultimate individual award in men’s football.

According to information gathered by Mentorslink, the wife who bought the Ugba, prepared it for the family, and soon after eating, all of them started having stomach upset.

Former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode, has labelled President Muhammadu Buhari, as a “closet radical Islamist” and “Christian-hating mass murderer”.

Fani-Kayode stated this in a Twitter post on Saturday, where he was reacting to Senator Lindsey Graham’s comments, that Americans should anticipate more military operations in Africa whilst the war on terrorism continues.

UN Deputy Secretary-General, Amina Mohammed, has disclosed that there are 37 career openings for young Nigerians in the world body.

Mohammed disclosed this, weekend, at a Cultural Night organised by Nigerians working at the United Nations Systems.

She said the openings are available via the Junior Professional Officers’ Programme, including internship for young graduates.

The USS Ronald Reagan sailed right into a South Korean port Saturday following week-long joint naval exercises that North Korea brands a “rehearsal for invasion.”

US Ronald Reagan Rear Adm. Brad Cooper, commander of Naval Forces Korea, said aboard the nuclear- powered aircraft carrier that that the drills enhanced the allies’ capability to coordinate operations.

According to Fox News, the five-day drills that ended Friday involved fighter jets, helicopters and 40 naval ships and submarines from both countries training for potential North Korean aggression. Within an apparent show of force against North Korea, the United States also sent many of its advanced level warplanes, including four F-22 and F-35 fighter jets and two B-1B long-range bombers, for an air show and exhibition in Seoul that began on Tuesday. “The objective of those exercises and operations are allow the combined defense of the Republic of Korea and also have them ready throughout,” Rear Adm. Marc Dalton, U.S. Commander of Carrier Strike Group Five, said, according to Reuters. “We had no interaction with any North Korean forces at any point during this exercise,” Reuters quoted Dalton as adding.

The Ronald Reagan and its own strike group of ships docked in Busan as local South Koreans greeted the sailors in traditional dress, Star and Stripes. There was also a big sign saying “U.S. troops go home” and an accompanying song greeted the sailors at the naval base’s front gate, the paper reported. Jeong Jun-ho, 15, of Busan, jumped out of his family’s car to view the Ronald Reagan pull in to port. “I’m scared about this; I don’t like war,” he told Stars and Stripes. The drills came ahead of President Donald Trump’s first official trip to Asia the following month that’s likely to be overshadowed by tensions with North Korea. North Korea’s official Rodong Sinmun newspaper said Saturday that the most recent naval drills have driven the problem of the Korean Peninsula to a “touch-and-go situation” and accused the allies of “getting frantic with the move to start a nuclear war.”

The Abuja Division of the Federal High Court has granted a request by Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, for a temporary forfeiture of all funds held in bank accounts not linked to BVNs — and whose ownership could not be absolutely identified.

Also to be seized by the Nigerian government are funds held in bank accounts without sufficient know-your-customer credentials, court documents seen by PREMIUM TIMES said.

Industry experts expressed strong reservations about a lack of specific legal framework for the unprecedented forfeitures and potential coercion of banks by the federal authorities in separate interviews with PREMIUM TIMES Saturday.

No estimates were immediately available, but it is widely held that billions of naira remained trapped in the unlinked bank accounts since 2015 when the Central Bank of Nigeria ordered commercial banks to stop attending to new enrollees.

The order followed an originating motion of notice filed by Mr. Malami on behalf of the Nigerian government on September 28.

Nnamdi Dimgba, the Federal High Court judge who presided over the ex-parte motion, granted all the nine reliefs sought by Mr. Malami —himself represented by a lawyer, Usman Dakas— on October 17.

The court ordered all the 19 deposit money banks, DMBs, operating in the country to release to Nigerian government names of accounts not yet connected to BVN; account numbers; their outstanding balances; domiciling locations; and domiciliary accounts without BVN and where they are domiciled.

Our problem in this country is that we like to pretend to be sophisticated and law-abiding. Well, we can channel the energy lost on pretense, on something much more productive but hold on, I’m getting to that.

Few weeks back, military personnel went to the east to ‘immunize’ children without the express notification or permission of their parents or legal guardians, and most people on the social media space decided to do the usual¬--express strong opinions on subjects they know little or nothing about. In this case, they kept insisting that these parents who panicked and quickly withdrew their kids from school were ‘uninformed’ and ‘illiterate’.

Let me be honest with you at this point. If on getting to a harbour, about to board a boat, I see soldiers insisting that I be immunized before being allowed to board, and I have nowhere else to go I, Violet Maxwell Benson would rather run to the river bank and sleep there. Why? Because apart from the fact that we’re in a regime where human life is little more than an ant’s, there’s also the instinctive knowledge of how sinister it is for law enforcement agents to back-up and try to enforce a supposed liberal act like immunization. True there is no accusation of chauvinism but there is also no time for political correctness or debates about the state of a parent’s literacy. What then is there time for? (Yes, finally what I’ve been trying to get to). Time for innovation. For brain-racking. For solutions-to-problems seeking. You have erred if you allowed this ‘monkey business’ or our unstable economy or our government or any other problem to occupy much of your ticking time without thinking about solutions. That is why I want you to know about a new craze (well, not entirely new). Yes! Monkey pox is out!

Not in quite a while has a musician had to handle the kind of backlash that Ghanaian hiplife artiste, Patapaa is facing.

Because the Agona Swedru-based artiste released his now viral song One Corner, he has faced opposition from all angles; from some members of the general public, preachers as well as his colleague musicians.

The situation has not been the song, which by all standards is quite ordinary, however in the accompanying dance which sees people gyrating and making other sexually suggestive gestures also to many,  that is just too much to see.

Patapaa, born Justice Amoah, tells Showbiz he did not expect to make enemies when he released his song and is disappointed in those he says want him to fail.

“I HEARD HIPLIFE ARTISTE ATOM RELOADED SAY GHANAIANS WILL REJECT ME SOON BUT WHETHER OR NOT I WILL BE REJECTED DEPENDS ON HOW TALENTED I AM AND I CAN SAY WITHOUT FEAR THAT I AM,” HE SAID IN AN INTERVIEW ON MONDAY.

“PROPHET KUMCHACHA, SONNIE BADU, KKD HAVE ALL CRITICISED THE SONG AND THE DANCE THAT ACCOMPANIES IT BUT I WILL PROVE THEM WRONG AND SOON GHANAIANS WILL KNOW THAT ONE CORNER IS ONE OF MY MANY HITS,” HE ADDED.

Opinions are divided especially on social media about One Corner. While some believe Patapaa should be allowed to express his creativity, others believe the song and dance is demonic. Currently, there is a campaign calling for it to be banned.

Pataapa’s worry is that Ghanaians are quick to destroy but are not ready to help you build your career.

“AT THIS POINT IN MY CAREER, ALL I NEED IS SUPPORT AND ENCOURAGEMENT AND NOT INSULTS AND CRITICISMS. I WILL NOT BE DISTRACTED BY THESE COMMENTS BECAUSE I KNOW WHERE I AM HEADED,” HE TOLD SHOWBIZ.

Patapaa is also worried about the way the opposition against him has turned personal with negative talk focused on his looks and background.

“I’VE COMMENTS FROM PEOPLE THAT I AM UGLY AND A VILLAGER AND SOMETIMES IT HURTS ME BUT I AM MOVING ON AND WILL NOT ALLOW THEM TO AFFECT ME SO MUCH,” HE SAID.

He also expressed anger about his recent visit to the Passport Office in Accra to apply for a passport for the first time. He alleged officials at the Passport Office circulated his pictures which found their way onto social media just so Ghanaians could ridicule him, GhanaKasa learnt.

Patapaa also addressed the controversial One Corner dance saying he is worried about how Ghanaians are taking it to the extreme.

“IN AS MUCH AS I CAN’T RESTRICT ANYONE FROM DOING THE ONE CORNER DANCE, I HAVE ALWAYS ADVISED GHANAIANS TO TONE DOWN” HE SAID.

About his future plans, Patapaa said he is working towards collaborations with some of the top musicians in his country.

The reputation of an All Progressives Congress chieftain, Rochas Okorocha has continued to wane since the construction of some controversial statues.

Governor Rochas Okorocha’s convoy on Monday was reportedly stoned by angry residents on the streets of Imo.

In a video that has emerged online, residents were seen throwing stones and abusing the governor for his nonchalant attitude towards the plight of the people, while at the same time, erecting a statue in honour of the President of South Africa, Jacob Zuma.

Governor Rochas who has been under criticisms for erecting Zuma's statue has been instructed by United Labour Congress of Nigeria (ULC) to apologize to citizens of the state for allegedly disgracing them.

Governor Okorocha has also declared he would unveil more statues in Owerri, the state capital.

Students were apparently seen running towards their homes from school after refusing vaccines from the military in Ondo State.

There was pandemonium in Ondo state as secondary school students were seen running home from school soon after reports that soldiers had come to 'forcefully' inject them with vaccines to protect against monkey pox disease.

A student who had been interviewed said that "teachers asked them to go home because soldiers were around to force them to take injection which could lead to death. The injection is said to be against monkey pox disease."


The incident occurred today at Owo Secondary school, in Ondo state considered to be one of the popular secondary schools in the state.

A mum have been charged with murder after she allegedly put her two kids in an oven and switched it on.


Lamora Williams, 24, was arrested after her small children Ja'Karter Penn, 1, and Ke-Yaunte Pen, 2, were both found dead.

An arrest warrant claims the mum-of-three place the two children in the oven at some time between midnight on Thursday and 11pm on Friday.
