What is Vitamin D?
Vitamin D is known as a fat-soluble vitamin, meaning that it’s able to dissolve in fat but cannot dissolve in water. Found in a few foods such as fish liver oils, cod liver oils and other fatty fish. Some foods that contain vitamin D include - milk, cheese, egg yolks and beef liver. You can also get vitamin D from the Sun, as we can produce it when ultraviolet (UV) rays from the Sun hit our skins. In humans, once UV rays shines on our skins; vitamin D production commences, but it has to go through two changes before becoming active and useful.
• The first transformation occurs in the Liver and converts vitamin D to 25-hydroxyvitamin D, also known as calcidiol.
• The second transformation occurs in the Kidney and forms the active form known as 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3, or calcitriol.
In this form it’s able to participate in many functions related to bone health, cell growth and immune function.

• Vitamin D actually functions like a hormone and influences calcium transport throughout the body. This in turn impacts bone metabolism.
Specifically, vitamin D helps ensure that calcium and phosphate levels are constant, because if they’re not, the mineralisation, or the building up, of bones may fail.

• Vitamin D can also impact the calcium levels in the human body and is distinct because it enables us to sense when those levels are low. An increase of calcium release from the Bone and the Kidney, occurs when these levels drops significantly – but with help of the Kidney, less calcium is lost through our urine.

• Vitamin D participates in bone growth and bone modifications, by stimulating the activity of osteoblasts (cells that help build bone) and osteoclasts (cells that break down bone). When vitamin D in the body is low, our bones suffer the consequences and can become weak, brittle and may become misshapen. This distorted nature may be seen in children who are low in vitamin D and develop a condition termed rickets, where their legs are bow-legged.
