She was just a year old when it happened. She clock 2 on Nigeria's Independence day - October 1. Imagine a day to be born!

Though still very young, Jaylene Ekah will never forget how a SARS official in Uyo smashed the windshield of her dad's car while rushing to get her urgent medical attention. Pieces of those glasses fell right on Jaylene and her Mom's face and body!

The purpose of law enforcement is to promote public safety and uphold the rule of law so that individual liberty may flourish.

But somehow, bad elements who found their way into the force have completely shattered the trust between law enforcement agencies and the communities they swore to protect.

Till these issues are addressed and adequate actions taken to forestall future occurrences and weed out these bad elements, Nigerians will stand together to demand justice for the oppressed with a call on the Government to #EndPoliceBrutality and #ReformPoliceNow!

The show which kicks off with a red carpet by 5pm will feature nine contestants representing the nine Niger Delta states, battling it out in a fierce contest to clinch the #FondCup2021 crown.

According to the Producer of the pageant, Elizabeth Era, guests at the event will experience a mind-blowing show as topnotch judges like Larry Kay Ojomo (Mon-ami), Kiki Omeili and George Ashiru are expected to officiate the contest.

Face of Niger Delta Cultural Pageant 2021 is a thorough initiative aimed at celebrating and projecting intellectuals and purpose-driven maidens in the region, who desire peace and unity, which is very crucial to the development and integration of the region.

Papa Uma Ukpai is one of the few persons invited to pray for American President, Ronald Reagan, in 1986.

I learnt he was at Full Life on Sunday to celebrate with Rev. Ntia I. Ntia, who survived a terrible accident a few days to his 49th birthday.

Having lost two children in one day to a fatal road accident, Papa Uma, I would say, understands what it means to be involved in a deadly car crash.

He even had to deal with a robbery incident the same day where all his office equipment was stolen, same day!

About the loss of his two children, Papa Uma was on his way to a crusade in Ohafia when their car mysteriously plunged into a nearby river.

He succeeded to rescue the children but they later died. He kept their bodies in the car and tried to pray for them but an oncoming vehicle drove straight into their car completely smashing it into shreds!

Just then, somebody ran to him to inform him that his 50-sitter bus conveying his band had caught fire and the number of deaths couldn't be ascertained.

Too much for one man in one day, right? Till today, Papa Uma is still standing tall and strong!

When you look at the photos in this post, you'll realize why Papa Uma is crying and why he is broken.

He knows what God had saved Rev. Ntia Ntia from, and what people would have said if Rev. Ntia Ntia or anyone had died in that fatal accident.

To you, my dear reader, cast your mind back to the situations God had saved you from. Today your enemies would be rejoicing over your demise but mercy said no as God rose to your defense.

I can imagine what's right there on Papa Uma's mind.

Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has said the state-owned security outfit code-named Operation Doo Akpo is to be reactivated and strengthened with state-of-the-art equipment.

He said this was part of the government's strategic security effort to sustain the peace and security in the state.

Senator Diri disclosed this on Thursday when he received the South-South zone chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Archbishop Israel Ege and his entourage in Government House, Yenagoa.

Commenting on the security situation in the country, he said the South-South governors met and directed that special advisers on security matters in the various states come up with strategies to secure the zone.

The governor in a press release by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Daniel Alabrah, reminded the zonal Christian leadership of the recent enactment of a law banning open grazing in the state and called on all to abide by the law.

His words: "As South-South governors, we met and have considered the level of insecurity in the country. We have directed special advisers on security in each of the states to meet and discuss how best to secure the zone.

"In our case, we inherited the Doo Akpo security outfit from my predecessor. As we speak, we are reinventing Doo Akpor to what it used to be. We would procure equipment and logistics for them to ensure that they become the best in Nigeria.

"About two weeks ago, we also signed a law banning open grazing in Bayelsa and we have put in place a committee to ensure that everyone abided by the laws of the state."

While commending the CAN leadership for their relentless commitment and prayers for the state, Senator Diri also acknowledged their role in the continuous spiritual re-awakening of the people.

The governor, who accepted to host the October CAN rally, also directed the Special Adviser on Religious Matters to liaise with the body to ascertain the level of renovation to be undertaken at its secretariat.

In his remarks, the South-South CAN Chairman, Archbishop Ege, said they were in the state to offer special prayers for the governor, his team and the success of his administration.

He said Senator Diri has performed well, particularly in the execution of projects and prompt payment of workers salaries and gratuities.

Bishop Ege also lauded the governor for his exemplary leadership and expressed gratitude to him for appointing members of the clergy into his cabinet.

The Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Mr. Udom Emmanuel has advocated collaboration between Niger Delta States to forge a common front towards addressing challenges in the region.

Governor Emmanuel made this known, Saturday, in a goodwill message at a- 3-day retreat for Cabinet members of the Bayelsa State Government, at Ibom Icon Hotels and Golf Resort, Uyo.

Governor Emmanuel who identified underdevelopment, unemployment, insecurity among others as a common challenge bedevilling development in the Niger Delta region, stated that if leaders play their roles effectively, the challenges in the region could be surmounted regardless of support from government in the center.

“Leadership is not easy, when we talk about leadership, unfortunately in Nigeria everybody is looking at the governor, everybody inside this room is a leader and if we all play our roles as leaders we will be better off.

“We in the Niger Delta region are not fortunate in so many ways, I have almost finished 6 years, not even one kilometre of road constructed by the federal government in my state, I don’t know if you have there.

"With all the crude oil exploration in my state, I don’t have a depot so what does that mean, it means we must struggle, we must find a way for our people and we must work for our indigene.

"The time for us to sit back and wait for others to do something for us is gone, we must see what we can do for the entire region, if we can collaborate as a state, then the countries collaborate as Africa, then we have a whole lot to offer each other”.

The governor charged Bayelsa State cabinet members to make the retreat count, urging them to apply the lessons in their assigned duties and responsibility.

He stressed on creativity, loyalty, commitment and love for their state as a yardstick that will further drive their passions towards effective service.

“I love the brainstorming session; you see that whatsoever you study in theory you still need to go back and put it into practice, so I believe that whatever we learn here I just believe we will go back and get it done.

"Loyalty starts with what you deliver in your own Ministry, that is the way I count mine because at the end of the day where things go wrong no one will mention the commissioners, they will mention the governor, so your relationship with the governor should not be defined by how much money he puts in your ministry, you should be passionate about service to the state.

"If you love the state honestly the governor is covered, because whatever you love you care for, whatever you care for you protect and whatsoever you protect, you service”, he noted.

In his response the Governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Duoye Diri, thanked Governor Udom Emmanuel for a warm reception and hospitality accorded his cabinet members throughout the retreat.

Senator Diri, expressed optimism that the cordial relationship between the two states will continue to foster greater ties that will profer solutions to the peculiar challenges among the states and the region.

" I want to appreciate you and thank you profusely on behalf of the government and people of Bayelsa State.

"We came in here and we were received warmly and of course the entire country knows of the hospitality of Akwa Ibom State and that has been shown to all of us here.

"We are very appreciative and we believe that this cordial relationship between your state and our state will continue to grow from strength to strength, and we know as a people who have shared problems and challenges, as a people who have a common geographical location, a common culture, to a large extent we have a lot in common, that we can pursue as a group.

"I believe when we unite to pursue them most of the issues we have pursued together with God on our side, we will bring succour to the people of Niger Delta, the people of Akwa Ibom, and to the people of Bayelsa State".

Bayelsa State Governor, Sen. Douye Diri, is not just a boss who sits in his office and gives directives to his subordinates, but he is a leader that leads by example.

He has again clearly demonstrated this at the ongoing retreat for members of the State Executive Council holding in Uyo where he has participated actively in all presentations for 3 days.

He did not just declared open the retreat like its usually done, the governor has remained an active participant. Rare indeed and signs of a great leader.

It is exemplary in leadership by attending punctually and regularly from the first day to the last day of the State Cabinet Retreat.

Governor Douye Diri is indeed a great and good man.

Distinguished Senator Bassey Albert witnessed the funeral and thanksgiving service in honour of Late Ambassador Sam J. Edem and Late Mrs. Doris Sam Edem.

The event held at Gethsemane Lutheran School, Ikot Ukap Ndiya, Nsit Ubium Local Government Area attracted personalities within and outside the State.

In a condolence letter to the bereaved family, Senator Albert described the duo as true statesmen, who placed the collective will of the people ahead of their personal gains.

Edem, a former Chairman of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) and Nigeria's Ambassador to Senegal was aged 78, while Mrs. Edem spent 71 years in earth.

VICTOR OKHAI EMERGES 6TH DGN PRESIDENT

Victor Okhai emerged victorious on Sunday as the Directors Guild of Nigeria, DGN, elected its sixth president.

Okhai will succeed Olorogun Fred Amata, who had been in the saddle since 2016.

Chairman of DGNEC, Barr. Tunji Bamishigbin, who declared the results, said Okhai garnered 103 of the popular votes to beat his closest rival Mac Collins Chidebe who scored 45 votes. Yinka Akanbi came third 3 with votes while Kehinde Soaga took the rear with 1 vote.

Tony Akposheri (Vice President), Uchenna Agbo, (National Secretary), Osita Okoli, (Dirrctor of Finance), Perkeme Odo, (PRO), Prince Isaac Kolawole, Welfare/Social, Dan Chukwueze, (Provost), were all returned unopposed.

Victor Okhai, CEO of International Film and Broadcast Academy, is a producer, scriptwriter, director, cinematographer, freelance journalist and logistics provider for major international Film companies and TV networks including BBC, Aljazeera, CNN etc. He is also a co-founder of the Directors’ Guild of Nigeria.

Concerned citizens of Ikono/Ini, a sociopolitical group of Ikono and Ini indigenes, have refuted social media publications against the Commissioner for Agriculture, Dr Glory Edet, alleging her to be at war with political mights in the area.

Tagging the report as malicious and misleading, the group's coordinator, Ndarake Okpo described the report as a failed attempt by some disgruntled elements whose intent is to threaten the existing peace enjoyed in the Constituency”.

Emphasising that the report is a paid publication, targeted at tarnishing the Commissioner's image, Ndarake Okpo noted that such attempts "cannot deter the Commissioner from carrying on with her creditable performance to help her boss deliver on his mandate for the good of the state".

Upholding the stance of the group,
Stakeholders in the Federal Constituency, over the weekend, maintained that there was no war of any sort in the area.

The Stakeholders who expressed this in clear terms averred that the news alleging Dr Glory Edet to have invited the Senior Special Adviser to the Governor on Grassroots Mobilization, Mr Inibehe Umah to her Ewet housing residence to consult him of her intentions to contest for Ikono/Ini Federal House position in 2023, was false as the SSA has been the one pleading to see the Commissioner

Informing the newsmen, the stakeholders posited that they had met with the Commissioner for Agriculture, Dr. Glory Edet, following the break of the false news to ascertain her interest in the Ikono/Ini federal constituency seat.

"Her reply was that the Governor had cautioned his cabinet members to be more involved and concerned about delivering quality governance to the people, rather than meddling in politics of desperation , as power belongs to God,she said.

Describing the writer of the false news as "paid hungry writer", one of the Stakeholders who pleaded anonymity, sued that the Commissioner for Agriculture was too honorable to be abased by any evil plot.
"Dr. Glory is one person we know that turns whatever she lays her hands on into gold. So her contenders are afraid of her intelligence, capacity and performance which is unequalled so they don't want her to contest because they know she will be massively supported. It's what they do in politics. It's not a new thing to us," he said.

They strictly warned those involved in the defamatory acts against the Commissioner to refrain from such and other activities capable of causing fracas in the area, while calling on people of the area to continue in their unalloyed support for their daughter.

"Inibebe Umar should desist from cheapening himself as an errand boy who is paid little money by desperate aspirants to attack the image of Dr Glory Edet. Himself and his sponsors have failed already in their calculated plans", another Stakeholder added.

Meanwhile, information has it that two prominent persons in the area are behind the allegation to give the Commissioner a bad name before the public hence, resorting to defamation of her character using the media.

In recognition of her immense achievements and contributions to the development of Medical Students, the Honourable Commissioner for Agriculture, Dr. Glory Edet, has emerged the first female Patron, National Association of Akwa Ibom State Medical Students (an umbrella group of the Students Doctors of Akwa Ibom State origin across the World).

Responding during the event held yesterday at the Ministry’s Conference Hall, Idongesit Nkanga Secretariat complex, Uyo, Dr. Edet appreciated the group for honouring her as the first female patron, promising that the award will encourage her to do more in service to humanity.

She said “the award is cherished since it emanates from an organised group. I will not fail in the confidence reposed on me, but will continue to support your programmes”

Dr. Edet, who lauded the group for successfully organising a cancer awareness campaign during the World Cancer Day, a few months ago in Ini Local Government, called on other groups to join the trend, so as to minimally reduce the challenges facing humanity.

She advised them to take their studies seriously in the University, in order to make their parents and Akwa Ibom proud.

The Commissioner in response to an appeal made by the group, personally took over full sponsorship of a year two Medical Student, who was about to withdraw from the University due to lack of funds. The sponsorship covers throughout her first degree programme. Dr. Edet also promise to pay school fees for five (5) less privileged students. She as well decorated Miss NAAKIMS.

Earlier, NAAKIMS-World Wide President, Comrade Utomobong Udo said the award came on the heels of the recommendation of the Nigerian Medical Association, based on her track record, benevolence and support to the Medical profession in the State.

Comrade Udo who applauded the Commissioner for her philanthropic disposition, appealed for the sponsorship of an outstanding medical student, Ms. Emem Umoh.

In his remarks, the Director of Administration Mr. Iffiok Udo, commended the group for pointing out the challenge faced by one of their colleagues, which has been addressed by the Commissioner for Agriculture.

The event featured the presentation to the Honourable Commissioner, an award of recognition, a T-shirt, face cap and sage.

Operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Akwa Ibom State Command, have arrested no fewer than three persons over alleged illegal dealings in adulterated petroleum products suspected to be Automotive Gas Oil (AGO), popularly known as diesel.

The suspects were arrested along the Ikot Abasi-Portharcourt Expressway, while reportedly conveying over 60 sacks bags of adulterated AGO, lifted through a truck meant for the transportation of agro-allied products and sand.

The State Commandant of the NSCDC, Mr Samuel Fadeyi Esq, who disclosed this in Uyo on Friday, disclosed that the suspects tactfully concealed the products under large amount of sand loaded on the truck, with the intent to deceive operatives of the Corps on patrol.

He pointed out that Command will thoroughly investigate the matter before the suspects are charged to a court of competent jurisdiction for prosecution.

While sounding a note of warning from the Commandant General, Dr. Ahmed Abubakar Audi PhD, mni, to illegal petroleum dealers, the Akwa Ibom NSCDC Boss warned all perpetrators of oil theft, illegal bunkering, pipeline vandalism and other criminal activities to desist from these nefarious activities, as there was no hiding place for crime in its area of operations.

He further warned that the product being inflammable could cause fire disaster, if not properly handled. He reiterated that NSCDC's mandate is not only directed at protection of lives and properties but also, protection of our collective critucal assets and infrastructure as a nation.

The modern concept of Agriculture is that of a large scale commercial enterprise as opposed to small scale subsistence farming with little returns. When running an agribusiness, you need to have a viable business structure hence Daniel runs his farm on a coporate structure setting, enforcing reporting hierarchy and specific job description for qualified staff. There’s an MD/CEO, Agric Project Manager, Marketing and Training Manager with assigned roles and responsibilities and other dedicated personnel for other operational activities. Currently Deasbla Agro industries Ltd is undergoing upgrade from an Enterprise to a Limited liability company.

Daniel stated that the high point and most defining moment for his business was completing his first sweet corn project in 2019. That achievement motivated him to invest more in production.

According to Daniel, Vegetable farming in Nigeria can be enhanced and made sustainable if there’s provision of agricultural friendly lands- lands that have been intentionally demarcated for Agric purposes with security and access to water. Also he calls for the government to source for and regulate quality farm inputs to avoid exploitation of farmers by Agro inputs companies. As a vegetable farmer, Daniel wants easy access to funds to help buffer working capital.

Going into vegetable farming in Nigeria either on full time or part term basis is profitable and as the attention of the country turns away from oil to other sources of revenue, an investment in farming is priceless.

Searching for something on my mobile phone, I came across this photograph. It sent me into memory lane.

With a sense of loss I remember my mentor, friend and boss of all time, the great Kofi Annan, Nobel Laureate, former Secretary-General of the United Nations. Here we were after a very warm one-hour meeting at his office at the Kofi Annan Foundation in Geneva in January 2018, a few weeks before I announced my candidacy in Nigeria’s 2019 presidential election. He strongly encouraged me to run for president, saying Africa needed a new generation of leaders.

We joked about how ageless he was, as I reminded him he hadn’t changed one bit from ours days in the mid-1990s when he was my direct boss as Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations and I was the Political Affairs Officer in the Africa Division handling conflict resolution and the rebuilding of failed states in then war-torn Rwanda, Angola and Somalia.

Kofi mentored me and had a soft spot for me as a rising young African UN officer in those days. He and I also happened to be residential neighbors on Roosevelt Island in New York. We often rode the tram together from the island over the river to 59th Street, and would hit the pavement on foot to our office at UN Headquarters (he hated driving and much preferred to walk - this was before he was elected Secretary-General and protocol required he had to be chauffeured!) We his staff all called him by his first name Kofi as he preferred but, again, when he became the Secretary-General, protocol forced us to adapt to “Mr. Secretary- General”.

When rumors began to swirl that he was a strong possibility to replace the Egyptian Boutros-Boutros Ghali as SG, he seemed an unlikely candidate to the less informed. He was not a typical African politician or a Minister of Foreign Affairs as was the typical profile (in other words he did not have the diplomatic equivalent of “grassroots structure” but was more of a technocrat. ) But I knew he was certain to win, for several reasons, not least of which was that times were changing. UN reform, in which Annan as SG was later to offer me a significant role with an appointment as a member of the High Level Redesign Panel on the UN Internal Justice System in 2006, was the talk of the day. There was a yearning in some global powerful quarters for more of technocratic successor to reform the organization and solve practical problems than a strong politician like Boutros - Boutros Ghali.

The imperial “ BBG” as the reigning Secretary-General was referred to, and who wanted a second term Washington increasingly seemed determined to veto, was quick to deliver a preemptive strike that was clearly intended to weaken Annan’s chances. Boutros-Ghali attempted to “exile” Kofi with an appointment as the Special Representative of the Secretary-General to the Former Yugoslavia.

As often happens in life, what was intended for other reasons became a huge opportunity. First, the western powers prevailed on BBG to limit Annan’s absence on this assignment to four months to ensure he returned to UNHQ in New York soon. But the assignment actually gave Annan massive hands-on international diplomatic exposure in a theatre of war in the Balkans, reputed to be “the graveyard of diplomats”. He excelled. Operating in the close sight of the European nations and impressing them with his skills, Annan’s potential candidacy became a Fait accompli.

Immediately Annan arrived in Zagreb, Croatia, he sent a message that he wanted yours truly to be sent down from New York to Zagreb as his Special Assistant. I was thrilled and honored! But there was just one problem: my wife was pregnant with our first child and was very close to delivery. We did not have any help at home as such hired help was too expensive.

Forced to choose between this request and my wife, I chose my responsibility to my wife. I sent Annan a note thanking him for his kind invitation and what a privilege it was for me. But I was in a bind with my personal situation. He replied that he wasn’t aware of my wife’s pregnancy and if he had been, he would not have asked. I should stay and tend to my wife at a time like this, he said.

Years later when, after my assignment in Geneva at The Global Fund and later resigning from the UN to start my own risk management consulting firm in the same city, I was appointed Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, my cell phone rang one day at work. “Dr. Moghalu? The female European voice inquired. “Yes” I replied. “Please hold on for Mr. Kofi Annan from Geneva” she said (he had by now completed two terms as UN head and retired to Geneva, where he established the headquarters of the Kofi Annan Foundation.) “Congratulations, Kingsley”, he told me, and offered some advice as I could feel his typical smile and twinkling eyes even over the phone.

Naturally, I wasn’t going to do something as “heavy” as running to be elected President of Nigeria without consulting my boss, mentor and friend. On this day as we talked intimately in Geneva, he was as fit as a fiddle. A few months later, he was gone, aged 80.

Nostalgia overwhelms as I write. Adieu, Kofi Annan. A great world leader, a great African, a great son of Ghana. My boss of all bosses. I learnt much from you.

The National Anti-Rabies Campaign has been flagged off in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital.

Speaking at a brief but colourful flag-off ceremony which was held on Thursday at the Ministry of Agriculture grounds, Uyo, the Honourable Commissioner for Agriculture, Dr. Glory Edet, described the campaign as timely. While welcoming participants to the event, she noted that Rabies was a concerning disease which could be contracted from dogs, cats and other pets and has no known cure but can be mitigated through vaccination.

On the need for the campaign, she explained that the National Anti-Rabies Campaign is a positive reaction by the World Health Organisation for Animal Health and the Federal Government of Nigeria through the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (RMARD) to the impending threat by rabies. In her words "This exercise is jointly done by the World Health Organisation for Animal Health, the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (FMARD) and the Akwa Ibom State Government".

Dr. Edet advised Veterinary Doctors of the need to be immunized with the human Anti-rabies in order to reduce the high risk of contracting the disease.

While also educating dog owners on the importance of the vaccination, the Honourable Commissioner noted that the FREE vaccination for dogs, cats and monkeys will take place at veterinary clinics sited around all Local Government Headquarters of the State, and will last for a period of two (2) months. She assured the general public that the Ministry of Agriculture is opened to partner with committed stakeholders in Agriculture to put smiles on the faces of Akwaibomites. The Commissioner appreciated the Governor for his passion in all areas of Agriculture and his support for the Programme

Earlier, the Director of Veterinary Services in the Ministry, Dr. Obot Obot, welcomed participants to the event and stated that Rabies are incurable and advised dog owners to vaccinate their dogs and take the yearly vaccination seriously.

He commended the Honourable Commissioner for the campaign and assured that the campaign will be taken to the nooks and crannies of the State.

A pep talk on the effects of rabies, dog bite and preventive measures, was delivered by Dr. Teddy and Dr Abasiodiong.

Dr. Uyobong Uko, the State Director, Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development thanked the Akwa Ibom State Government for being the first to carry out the programme in the Country and further expressed gratitude to the Honourable Commissioner .

In their separate goodwill messages, the Director of Animal Husbandry, Dr. Aniefiok Isong, the Programe Director, AKADEP, Mr. Okon Ndehede, the Chairman, NVMA, Dr. Ofonbuk Ntuen, all thanked the Governor through the Honourable Commissioner, for being the first to approve the hosting of the Anti-Rabies Campaign.

They appealed to dog owners to take advantage of the free vaccination accross the 31 Local Government Areas of the State.

In her vote of thanks, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mrs. Mary Bassey thanked all the participants for coming out to witness the flag-off of the campaign and appreciated the Honourable Commissioner for passionately interpreting the ideas of the Governor in the Agric sector and prayed for journey mercies for all participants.

The event featured free animal vaccination and certificate presentation to dog owners.

Also in attendance were, Vet Doctors, Directors and staff members of the Ministry of Agriculture.

The NDDC Interim Administrator, Mr Efiong Akwa, has declared that the Commission was determined to partner with the governors of the Niger Delta region towards Niger Delta development.

Mr. Akwa was speaking during a courtesy visit to the Rivers State Governor, at Government House Port Harcourt.

The NDDC boss who led a team of the Commission’s management, stated that he had made it a point of duty to reach out to critical stakeholders of the Niger Delta region in order to tap from their wealth of knowledge, as well as to brief them programmes and policies being implemented to ensure quick and impactful deliverables for the people of the Niger Delta region, “in line with President Muhammadu Buhari’s directives.”

Mr. Akwa congratulated Governor Wike for the infrastructural development in Rivers State which, he said, could only be achieved by someone who was focused, passionate and had the welfare of the people at heart.

He thanked the governor for the on-going dualisation of the Eastern By-pass Road where the newly completed NDDC head office is situated.

Akwa said: “The newly completed permanent head Office of the NDDC is now ready for commissioning after over 20 years of commencement of work. May we say, without mincing words that it is to Your Excellency’s credit that the NDDC permanent Head office project was smoothly completed due to the enabling environment provided by your exceptional leadership.

“It is important to point out that throughout the period that the Head Office was under construction, there was no hostility or disruption of the project by the host community.

“As a widely regarded project-oriented governor, we believe that the NDDC can do more in terms of deliverables for the people of Rivers state and the Niger Delta region in general by having a robust partnership with your government.”

The Interim Administrator said that the Commission had enjoyed a good working relationship with the government and people of Rivers state under the leadership of Governor Wike and promised to sustain the synergy.

From when he graduated with a Second Class Upper Division in Business Administration from the University of Lagos, in 1987, before obtaining a Masters Degree (MBA) in Banking and Finance from the University of Calabar, in 1991, one could sense that there is something particular about the Mbiatok Itam born Banker cum politician.

Make no mistakes; if any truth can be said about the current administration of Governor Udom Emmanuel, it is the fact that the Governor has steadily ensured a wave of unprecedented achievements, spanning across the aviation sector, economic development, housing, agriculture, healthcare, etc.

Another truth that can be said, if we must be sincere with our minds and consciences, is the fact that these lofty strides of Governor Udom Emmanuel, aside God, have been driven to reality through the forthrightness, dedication, effectiveness and sincerity of members of Governor Emmanuel's team, particularly Mr Akan Okon who holds sway as Commissioner for Economic Development and Ibom Deep Seaport.

Undoubtedly Mr. Akan Okon belongs to a rare class of people who belong to what Douglas McGregor tagged 'Theory Y'. McGregor in his Human and Motivation Theory, noted that in a typical work place, there are employees who belong to 'Theory X' and others, 'Theory Y.'

An employee in 'Theory X', has little to no ambition, shies away from work or responsibilities, and is individual-goal oriented. Generally, those in 'Theory X' believe their employees are less intelligent than the managers are, lazier than the managers are, or work solely for a sustainable income.

Contrastively, those in 'Theory Y', act on the belief that people in the work force are internally motivated, enjoy their labour in the company, and work to better their employers, without a direct "reward" in return. 'Theory Y' employees, like Mr Akan Okon, are considered to be one of the most valuable assets to the company, and truly drive the internal workings of the corporation. Mr Akan Okon is not only good at what he does, he is a pragmatic, focused, and result-oriented chief servant of Governor Emmanuel who has remained resolute in his commitment to the drive of the current administration, no wonder he has been excellently and exceptionally delivered in all his assignments since his entrant into government.

An accomplished banker, Mr Akan Okon has served a high profile positions in time-tested financial organizations such as Area Executive Standard Trust Bank [now UBA]; Head, Treasury and Financial Institution Department in First African Trust Bank Limited; Head, Investment Banking in First. His journeys to the Ministries of Economic Development, Finance, Housing and Special Duties, Special Duties and Aviation Development and now, Economic Development and Ibom Deep Seaport have always been fruitful and worthwhile.

Fast forward to his stay in the Ministry of Special Duties and Aviation Development as Commissioner. One of the most criticised, ridiculed projects in the current administration of Governor Emmanuel had been the Ibom Air. To say the least, many never believed that the Ibom Air project could or would come to fruition but thanks to the Governor who entrusted the whole project into the able hands of Mr Akan Okon.

Today, Ibom Air does not only stand as the only state-owned, but the best, safest and most reliable Airline which has redefined the aviation sector and brought a whole new experience to air transportation in Nigeria. The airline today, has further improved the economic status of Akwa Ibom State, enhanced industrialisation, business travels and further placed the state on a global map. The story of Ibom Air would never be complete without Mr Akan Okon's name boldly written on it.

The 21 Storey Intelligent Building is another stride that has Mr Akan Okon name boldly written on it. Mr Akan Okon, as then Commissioner for Special Duties and Aviation Development, particularly supervised the construction of the 21 Storey Building codenamed 'Dakkada Towers' from the site clearing level. The building is part of Governor Udom Emmanuel's burning desire to attract huge volumes of Foreign Direct Investments, FDI, to Akwa Ibom and catapult the state into an investment hub of Nigeria.

With the Tower as high as 108.8 meters, the 21 storey Five Star business accommodation occupies a construction area of 18, 639.50 meters square on a massive site area of 48,200.00 meters square, making room for a 500 capacity car park and is set to host any known corporate organization or world class company in the Nigeria Oil and Gas industry. It is expected to be a major catalyst of economic renaissance.

Coming with all the attractions and safety mechanism expected of a smart building anywhere in the world, the 21 storey building is a dream come true in the sustainable infrastructural drive of the Governor Udom Emmanuel administration. The project which kicked off on 17th January, 2018 with a two year work term is at the the finishing stage and would be ready for testing soon.

The Ibom Deep Sea Port (IDSP) project is perhaps, one of the initiatives so dear to Governor Udom Emmanuel. The project involves the development of a Greenfield Deepsea Port and accompanying Free Trade Zone (FTZ) in Akwa Ibom State. The proposed Port and FTZ are part of the proposed Ibom Industrial City initiative that will be established on a 14,400 hectare site donated by the State Government at no value.

While it is important to commend previous administrations for conceiving the project, it should also be noted that efforts by those administrations at kick starting the Seaport weren't successful, but in less than two years on the saddle as Commissioner for Economic Development and Ibom Deep Seaport, Mr Akan Okon has commendably interfered with the Ministry of Transport, the Nigerian Ports Authority, Infrastructure Concession Regulatory Commission, Bureau for Public Procurement and other relevant government agencies and today, the Federal government has approved the commencement of the Seaport.

When completed, the IDSP project is intended to become a major national and regional economic gateway that will provide additional container handling capacity for the country. In addition to containers, the IDSP is expected to handle petroleum products (export and import), crude oil and natural gas (export), vehicles (import) and bulk trade in natural resources (import and export). It is planned to be the deepest port in the West African sub-region that would bring lots of benefits to Akwa Ibom State, as it would not only boost economic growth, but also create more employment opportunities in the state.

As commendations continue to trail the approval of IDSP by the federal government, it is worthy to note that Mr Akan Okon belongs to a rare class of politicians who have diligently blended individual success with service delivery. He stands tall as an asset, a result-oriented servant, irrepressible patriot, a disciplinarian, a good father and an interpreter of the lofty visions of Governor Udom Emmanuel.

Christmas came early for children of the Mother Charles Walker Home, Uyo as Akwa Ibom born, Nigerian International Soccer star, William Troost-Ekong sent some items comprising bags of rice, beans, noodles, garri, milk, sugar, bathing and washing soaps, disinfectants, hand sanitizers, Sanitary towels, etc to them.

Troost-Ekong, who hails from Etinan Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State had visited the center sometime ago in the company of Super Eagles teammate- Leon Balogun to donate a deep freezer and some food items to them and promised to continue supporting the good work ongoing at the center in his own little way. In an apparent fulfillment of that promise, the Watford FC player, undeterred by busy soccer schedules and travel restrictions occasioned by the novel Corona virus pandemic, sent these materials across to the center.

Presenting the items on his behalf, his friend, Mr Raphael Edem said the Watford Fc Player was committed to charity and would continue to partner the Mother Charles Walker Home to provide help and succour to the helpless and needy in the society. Edem, who is the Special Assistant to the Governor of Akwa Ibom State on Public Affairs, who was accompanied on the visit by a relative of the donor, urged management and the children at the center to continue to offer prayers for the donor, Mr Williams Troost-Ekong. He elso encouraged the children not to be deterred by whatever circumstances they have found themselves, but to strive to make the best of the succour provided for them by the home to be the best they can in life.

Responding, the Mother in charge of the Center, Rev. Sister Matilda Umanah thanked the donor for his magnanimity and prayed God to continually bless him and grant him a fruitful career. INTERNATIONAL HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION STEPS INTO ABAK CHAIRMANSHIP CRISIS

..as Chairmanship aspirant, Hon. Patrick C. Iwok, drags AKISIEC, PDP, to court

Hon. Patrick C. Iwok, a Chairmanship Aspirant from Midim Clan, Abak LGA of Akwa Ibom State, had approached the court in suit number: HU/293/2020, praying the court among others, for an ''order for Interlocutory Injunction'' restraining the PDP from recognising and forwarding the name, EKERETTE ETIM INYANG to the State Independent Electoral Commission AKISIEC, for Chairmanship of Abak LGA in the just-concluded Local Government polls, 2020, pending the hearing and just determination of the substantive suit before the court.

To also be considered is an order for Interlocutory Injunction restraining the 3rd defendant (AKISIEC) from accepting and recognising the name of the 1st defendant (Ekerette Etim Inyang) as the nominated candidate of the 2nd defendant (PDP) for the Chairmanship of the said election.

More so, the aggrieved Aspirant, Hon. Patrick Iwok, had also approached the International Human Rights Commission IHRC, to ventilate the collective grievances of MIDIM CLAN, over the sudden irrational, morally and legally indefensible somersault, as it is not only an affront to the supremacy of the Party's Constitution which recognizes the Rotating and Zoning principles, but also an unwarranted assault on the collective intelligence, sensibility and sensitivities of the people of MIDIM CLAN in Abak LGA who have patiently waited for 21 years for their turn.

Hon. Iwok prayed the International body to ensure that Justice is not only seen to be done to himself and his Clan, but also to uphold the sacrosanctity of the party's Constitution.

IHRC AFRICA REGION HQ IS REVIEWING CASES OF INJUSTICE IN POLITIC

The office of H.E Dr. Tivlumun Innocent Ahure, the IHRC Africa Region HQ Director/Ambassador has taken receipt of the final report stating grievances of political exclusion from the IHRC Coordinator/Special Envoy for the Republic of Somalia, Hussein Mohammed Ali. This final report from Somalia is to be reviewed alongside the other reports from Uganda, Mozambique, South Sudan, Ethiopia, Nigeria, Cameroon, Kenya, Gabon and Burkina Faso.

There are also a few other detailed reports from other African countries not signed by the IHRC Special Envoys. Hussein Mohammed Ali's report from Somalia raised the issue of a community complaining of injustice for the past 4 years in Hirshabelle State. The rer shabelle community have been denied rights of representation in Hirshabelle State Parliament. While the community, is fully settled in Hiiran and Middle Shabelle Regions, it is still denied and have not been considered for parliamentary representation in Hirshabelle State by the authorities in Somalia. The IHRC Somalia presentation including all the other reports from the African countries and their required reviews will be well emphasized within the relevant committees of the African Union (AU) and the United Nations (UN).

Measures for achieving equitable political representations in order to forestall violence among communities must be a priority of the leadership in African Countries. The International Human Rights Commission (IHRC) through the Africa Region HQ of the IHRC is reviewing it's 2020 reports on the issues of competition between ethnic groups leading to the formation of militia groups which seek to be in the mold of freedom fighters and threaten the stability of the nations to get the government to ensure inclusive representation for all communities.

To put that assertion into perspective, the Director/Ambassador of the IHRC Africa Region HQ, H.E Dr. Tivlumun Innocent Ahure elaborated that there is an ever-present crazy competition for political representations and it is usually if not equitably considered leads to cries of marginalization of some sections of the polity. Dr. Ahure highlighted that this creates conflicts in the long run and then the protection of innocent civilians in our African countries becomes a huge task and funds are channeled for the humanitarian crisis. It is therefore better to prevent the conflicts by ensuring that the interests are equitably represented within the political system. The IHRC is also aghast at the edging out of the Midim clan in the election for the Chairmanship of the Abak Local Government Area in Akwa Ibom State - Nigeria.

The report received on this indicated that against the recognized zoning formula for peace, justice, and equity, the political leaders in Abak went on to allocate the position to a clan that has over time occupied the seat negating that it is the due turn of the Midim clan in line with the acceptable and equitable arrangement put in place for the Chairmanship election. This is an unjust use of might to oppress a people's right of representation.

#ENDSARS: HOW JAYLENE EKAH ESCAPED DEATH

July 12, 2020 was on a Sunday and my family had gone to see Jaylene Ekah 's maternal grandmother at Akon Itam.

A few hours after dropping them off came a call that all was not well with Jaylene's health. I immediately stepped out of where I was and rushed down to pick Jaylene up together with, her Mom, my Wife, and our helps.

On our way back to Uyo, around 7:20pm, we met a long queue of cars held hostage by men of Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) at Ntak Inyang Itam by AKBC Transmission Station.

The queue was intentional as the COVID-19 curfew in Akwa Ibom started by 8pm back then, so the tactics was to hold people up on the road till 8pm, then they would start extorting money from them.

They succeeded with their plans as we waited on the queue till 8pm while they intimidated drivers and passengers of cars they held hostage, extorting money from them.

While waiting in the queue, we had explained to an officer on the patrol that Jaylene was not feeling too well (which he pointed his torch and saw same), that we are rushing her down to the hospital for urgent medical attention but he just looked and said nothing.

We finally got to the extortion point but was signalled by a bright torch from their rally point to move on.

We actually thought it was the officer we spoke to that gave us the signal to proceed as the sick baby needed urgent medical attention but to our greatest surprise, another officer emerged from the rally point and smashed our windshield with an iron rod.

Jaylene escaped death by the whiskers as pieces of the shattered glass flew all over the dashboard, and immediately the incidence happened, I stopped my car, and came down to find out why such cruel treatment was metted out on us.

My wife Aidee Aniekan Ekah stepped out too but we were greeted with an AK-47 corked right in front of us and the officers threatening to shoot us while one angrily said that he wanted to use me to set an example. Example for what or for who, that I don't know.

Jaylene couldn't even cry. Her voice had grew faint as at then and her health was rapidly failing. She was only 9 months while her Mom just recovered from Post-Partum Cardiomyopathy.

We were intimidated and bullied but my wife kept pleading with me to leave the scene and proceed to get medication for our baby.

Well, we left but we will never forget.

I may, but Jaylene Ekah will never forget.

There is every reason to #EndSARS and #ReformThePolice as there is a strong and urgent need to #EndPoliceBrutalityinNigeria.

PRESS RELEASE ON THE SHOOTING INCIDENCE BY INSPECTOR ROBINSON OTOBONG OF NSCDC, AKWA IBOM STATE COMMAND, AT UMUOKPO IN UMUOKORO VILLAGE, OBINGWA LGA OF ABIA STATE ON THE 8TH OF SEPTEMBER, 2020

I am Samuel Fadeyi, the States Commandant of Nigeria Security And Civil Defence Corps, Akwa Ibom State Command. I am constrained to give this press release in order to acquaint the general public about the true story relating to the shooting incidence by one of my personnel that led to the death of one Onyekachi Wogu at Umukoro village, Obingwa LGA of Abia State on the 8th of September, 2020 at about 1730 hours.

1. Our Inspector, Robinson Otobong is attached to CGGC Global Projects Nigeria Limited (CGGC), the company rehabilitating Akwa Ibom link road to Aba, Abia State. He is on the private assignment for the road construction and it's workers together with three other personnel.

2. On the 8th of September, 2020, he was on a mobile protective assignment for two expatriates of CGGC in a Hilux vehicle in transit to Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom State to Abia State. They were in Ikot Ekpene-Aba road by Obingwa LGA of Abia State and a border town to Akwa Ibom at about 1630hrs, when they got to a bad section of the road. A trailer had already broken down causing traffic. In a bid to access a good portion of the road, they saw a barricade and some persons with shovels, machetes and sticks.

3. Officer Robinson initially believed they were community youths, so he alighted from the Hilux to talk to them to clear the barricade. Initially they listened to him but when they saw he was escorting the "white" expatriates, they became violent, brandishing their weapons and seeking to disarm the officer in other to get to the expatriates for whatever reasons.

4. Sensing danger of harm to himself and abduction or harm of his principals, Officer Robinson retreated but they surged at him with their cutlasses and shovels so much that he had to fire a warning shots. The shots did not deter them as they rushed him with sticks, machetes and shovels, trying to disarm him.

5. It was in the ensuing struggle that a second shot was fired and the leader of the mob who grabbed the muzzle of the rifle was shot. At that time, the driver who had seen the hostility and heard the gunshots had maneuvered the Hilux to Officer Robinson to leave the scene with the foreign nationals. However, Officer Robinson took compassion the shot hoodlum later identified as Onyekachi Wogu, and in a bid to save him, he carried him into the Hilux and sped off in search of a hospital.

6. At one of the border checkpoints manned by military personnel, they explained to the soldiers what had happened, they were directed to a nearby hospital, accompanying them for safety;

7. Unfortunately, Mr. Onyekachi Wogu was pronounced dead on arrival;

8. Whilst these medical diagnostics was going on, the hoodlums had regrouped and stormed the hospital having learnt that Officer Robinson was still in the territory. Some military men had to rescue the expatriates while the few on ground could not save my officer from being brutally beaten and machetted. The expatriates' Hilux was burnt right there in the hospital premises;

9. It took further reinforcement of military and police to rescue Officer Robinson and until recently, he was in a very dire and critical condition, resulting from injuries he sustained. He is being treated as of now at the police clinic in Abia State.

10. It is in view of these happenings that i find it regrettable, that it would be reported without verification, that our Officer recklessly shot the deceased in front of his compound. I believe the notoriety of this area is well known to travelers on that road and their history of violence even on security personnel is not hidden;

11. Would you have preferred an international event where foreign nationals in our care are taken and our rifle lost to unknown hoodlums? It is high time we stop playing politics with people's lives and situation. Parents should take responsibility for their ward's behavior. Security agents that they attack have families too and blood runs in their veins. I call on well-meaning citizens of this area to call their youths to order so that development will come there. The expatriates who are to rehabilitate their road are the same people we were guarding when the incident happened.

12. Be that as it may, a life is lost which calls for sober reflection, we condole with the family of the departed and we are ready to come personally to condole with them when the tension eases.

...PRESENTS CONSENSUS CANDIDATE TO PARAMOUNT RULER FOR BLESSING

Ahead of the 2020 Local Government Council election, stakeholders of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP in Uyo Ward 9 (formerly Ward 7), have zoned the councillorship seat to Ibiaku-Offot village.

The decisions which were taken after series of deliberation among stakeholders at the Ward Center, St. John Primary School, Eniong, this evening, were captured in a communique signed by all Ward Executives of PDP and other stakeholders including the Leader of Uyo Legislative Council, Hon. Nathaniel Sebastian Udoh, who represents the Ward.

The communique read in parts, "that every stakeholder is bound by the time-honored zoning arrangement existing among the 11 villages in the Ward namely Ewet, Eniong, Anua, Ekpri Nsukara, Ikot Ekidio, Ikot Anyang, Ikot Antuen, Ibiaku Offot, Use Offot, Use Attai, and Ekamba Nsukara, which has existed since the return of democracy in 1999 and has helped these villages to coexist in peace with another, grow in unity, brotherliness, and eschew political rancor. This zoning must stand.

"...in line with the admonition of His Excellency, Governor Udom Emmanuel, that all existing zoning arrangements should be respected. Accordingly, the existing zoning arrangement where the 11 villages were divided into three (3) political zones namely Zones A, B, and C remains valid. With this laudable arrangement, the councillorship seat rotated to all political zones in the Ward and returned to Zone A, which is currently occupied by Hon. Nathaniel Udoh, the Leader of Uyo Legislative Council.

"That during the recently concluded PDP Ward Congress, it was agreed that for the 2020 Local Government election the councillorship slot should go to a village in Zone B that has never produced a councilor before".

Furthermore, the communique stated "that following the already established zoning template stakeholders have unanimously agreed on a consensus that within Zone B since Akamba Nsukara has produced the Ward Chairman and Ward Woman Leader. Also, Use Offot produced Hon. Joseph Asuquo Edem as councilor just as Nsukara Offot produced Hon. Edet Bassey Asuquo as a councilor. Therefore, it will be fair and just to give the councillorship slot to Ibiaku Offot village which has never held any elective position before".

In addition, the communique stated "that stakeholders considered the loyalty, dedication, and contributions of one Elder Sunday Jimmy to the electoral successes of PDP in Ibiaku Offot village since 1999 till date. Elder Jimmy and his family have remained steadfast to the party and have earned the respect of everyone in the Ward.

"However, since he is advanced in age, it was unanimously agreed that his son, Otuekong Sunday Jimmy, an equally dedicated and loyal PDP faithful in the village, contest in his place. The choice of Otuekong Jimmy to replace his father has been endorsed by all the major PDP stakeholders in ward 7, now Ward 9 across all Zones and Villages."

They maintained that Uyo Ward 7 PDP, now Ward 9 stakeholders have taken pains to deliberate and negotiate on the councillorship seat before reaching this all binding consensus to sustain peace, harmony and enhance unity in the Ward as such the consensus should be respected by all within Ward 7 PDP, now Ward 9 as well as by chieftains and stakeholders in the entire Uyo Chapter of PDP.

After the consensus was reached, the stakeholders moved in unison and took Otuekong Sunday Jimmy, the councillorship aspirant, to the Paramount Ruler of Uyo, Edidem Sylvanus Effiong Okon for formal presentation and blessing.

The royal father, who is from the Ward, commended the unity and brotherly understanding shown by elders and stakeholders in reaching such a consensus. He appealed to everyone to queue behind the one selected by stakeholders for the sake of peaceful and rancor free election. He blessed the aspirant and assured him that the people are with him.

THE ZONING ARRANGEMENT ON COUNCILLORSHIP IN WARD 7 MUST STAND. A COMMUNIQUE BY UYO WARD 7 PDP STAKEHOLDERS FORUM, AFTER A MEETING HELD AT WARD CENTER, ST. JOHN’S PRIMARILY SCHOOL, ENIONG OFFOT, UYO ON WEDNESDAY AUGUST 5, 2020.

In view of the announcement of time table for 2020 Local Government Election by Akwa Ibom State Independent Electoral Commission, AKISIEC, stakeholders of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP in Uyo Ward 7, met at the Ward Center, Eniong Offot on Monday, August 5, 2020, to deliberate on modalities for the election of a councilor to represent the Ward in Uyo Local Government Legislative Council and resolved as follows:

SPOTLIGHT ON THE 1ST ABUJA - AKWA IBOM CULTURAL FIESTA SCHEDULED FOR 23RD NOVEMBER, 2019 AT JABI LAKE, ABUJA

In the following spotlight, Mr. Peter Saturday, an Abuja based Journalist and Social Affairs commentator examines the socio-economic and cultural imperatives of the fiesta.

According to Oxford Advanced Learners’ Dictionary, Culture is defined as “the customs and beliefs, art, way of life and organization of a particular country, group or a people”.

This means that any organized society, State, community or a group of people traceable to their ancestral origin have a “culture” that distinguishes them from others. The assertion above gives credence to the fact that Akwa Ibom Community, Abuja also known as “Mboho Akwa Ibom - Abuja” has a culture traceable to the Akwa Ibom State/people as well as our unique tribes linked to our ancestries. The three major ethic groups in Akwa Ibom State that form the tripod are: the Ibibio, Annang and Oro. We also have the Ekid and a couple of other ethic nationalities with their unique cultures all living in a "United State of Akwa Ibom".

Significantly, town union in contemporary times has became a critical instrument in building bridges of brotherliness, fostering unity and advancing interests among natives living in foreign lands. Across ethnic nationalities, this unit has also positioned itself as a formidable tool in promoting development at the grassroot and bridging the information gap between or among the home-based folks.

It is on this premise that Akwa Ibom community in Abuja under the visionary and goal-oriented leadership of Barr. Aniefiok Ibah decides to bring together all sons and daughters of Akwa Ibom state residents in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and indeed the 19 Northern states to converge on Abuja for the Cultural Fiesta scheduled for Saturday, 23rd November 2019 at the expansive Jabi Lake.

Remarkably, this is the first of its kind since creation of this Community in 1988, just a year after the birth of Akwa Ibom state under Gen. Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida regime.
Our uniqueness as people of the Land of Promise is exemplified in our way of life. Our culture is our identity. It is our pride and common heritage. It defines who we are and distinguished us from the other race in the world. Like Stephen R. Covey noted, strength lies in differences, not in similarities. Our strength lies on the riches encoded in our delicacies manifestly represented in our indigenous delicacies including: ekpang nkukwo, afere edikang ikong, affang, editan, ataama ye fufu or garri, anyand ekpang, edita iwa, affia efere ye usung ikpong, utuk mboro and others too numerous to mention. Our strength is exhibited in the mode of dressing that makes us the real Akwa Ibom people of this world. Our language, mode of greeting, farming methods, marriage rites, banking system, judicial system, traditional rulership/stool, ballad, folklores, festivals, music, our naming systems, performance, literature, myths, norms, religious/political/economic/educational/cultural/belief systems and many others distinctively define us.

This fiesta with the theme “Celebrating The Culture That Unites Us” under the Chairmanship of Barr Ekpo Nta (Former ICPC Chairman) will among other things showcase our irresistible cultural dance, parade, carnival floats, food exhibition/testing, unveiling of Akwa Ibom cultural symbol, folklores among others. Some of our Illustrious sons, daughters, in-laws and friends of Akwa Ibom State within and outside Abuja who have distinguished themselves through their professions will be celebrated and presented with Awards of Excellence. It will also be a rally point to strengthen the bond of unity, friendship and oneness that bind us. Beyond that, this fiesta will be a reunion of some sort to old time friends who have for long had a warmth embrace.

This is coming at a time when the campaign for the promotion of indigenous culture has more than ever been amplified, even as our identity as a people is seriously grasping for breath under the overwhelming suffocation of Western culture.

Today, it is more fashionable to consume foods from foreign countries, canned, bottled or garnished with preservatives with its health implications than to eat our indigenous and highly nutritious foods the nature has graciously blessed us with. It is significant to note that our fore fathers lived longer with little or no western medical attention because they survived on our indigenous foods, green leaves, locally made drinks and alternative medicine which it efficacy is still available to those who patronizes it.

Unfortunately, some of Our people finds fulfillment in identifying with foreign dress codes than our unique ways of expressing ourselves through our cultural dressing. It is seen as a symbol of high intellectual pedigree when our children communicate with foreign languages right in our homes while our unique Akwa Ibom language suffers undue relegation.

It amounts to cultural betrayal to see our parents giving their children and wards English or foreign names at the detriment of our traditional names that could convey same or best meanings. It is unpatriotic to see children who cannot mention the names of their grand parents or lack knowledge of their ancestry perhaps not taught by their parents.

Nowadays, It is common that majority of our brothers/sisters or leaders in public offices undermine the efficacious prowess of our mother tongue in an attempt to exchange salutations or pleasantries; “ Ette or Mma amesiere” in our indigenous language and what you get as reply is “good morning too or how may I help you?” all in English language. There are many versions and circumstances of such scenario.

These are all glaring indices that we owe ourselves a duty of not only encouraging communication in indigenous language(s) at our various homes and family gatherings, but imparting the knowledge of our culture and tradition on younger generations.

The concomitant effect of abdicating this responsibility places our civilization at the pedestal of extinction. According to Wikipedia, about 50 and 90 percent of 7000 languages currently spoken across the world will become extinct by the year 2100. Interestingly, Nigeria, India, Brazil, Mexico, Australia, Indonesia, Guinea and Cameroon rank among the eight countries incubating languages likely to suffer a devastating death in no distant future. This cannot be extricated from the imperialistic stifling of our heritage language, aided by the declining choice of our people to retain their indigenous language as their first language and other anti cultural practices.

Obviously, the theme of this maiden fiesta is not only apt but timely. It will be a wakeup call to all other ethnic divides across our country Nigeria and beyond for an arisen consciousness to explore all avenues to put their culture and tradition at the front burner in their daily dialogue. This can be a recipe to the insecurity ravaging some states in Nigeria and beyond. The power to tell our own story is domiciled in our tongue. Leaving our story untold is a recipe for distortion, half truth, neocolonialism, propaganda and outright lies. With the power of culture, we can tell our story. Shannon L. Alder said, “One of the greatest regrets in life is being what others would want you to be, rather than being yourself”. Equally, a 20th Century phenomenon - James Aggrey warned “ whoever is not proud of his colour is not fit to live”. We must not resign to superfluous opinions to tell the story of the good people of Akwa Ibom anywhere in the globe.

Undeniably, Akwa Ibom people are known for industriousness, creativity, can-do spirit, humility, patience, ambitiousness, penchant for excellence and abiding faith in God to take them to their land of promise to fulfillment. We have consistently been at the vanguard of making meaningful contributions to the socio-economic development of our great country, Nigeria. As the highest crude oil producing state in Nigeria, Akwa Ibom has for long witnessed unprecedented calm and peace even at the heat of hostility of militancy in the Niger Delta region. In academia, entertainment, sports, politics, tourism and indeed all areas of human endeavour, our dear state has remained a leading light. This accounts to why this fiesta has presented us a veritable platform to honour few of these illustrious sons and daughters with Awards of Excellence who have raised the flag high in their various fields of calling.

Undoubtedly, our hospitality, shoulder of love and friendship are some of the unique attributes that make us an outstanding people. Akwa Ibom Community in Abuja under the leadership of Barr. Aniefiok Ibah has remained resolute in this spirit by ensuring that the welfare of members remains paramount in its agenda. This is not unconnected to the support his administration has received from the Board of Trustees, Stakeholders and all members of the Community. The founding members of the Community deserves commendations for their foresight and ingenuity. Through our network of friends within and outside the fold, we have linked members to employment opportunities and contract awards in a bid to deliver in our core objective.

Through lobbying and advocacy to advance public and government policies, Akwa Ibom community in Abuja has also secured an appreciable representation at key government agencies at state and federal level. Without any iota of doubt, the upcoming fiesta which will have in attendance the Executive Governor of our dear State, His Excellency, Mr. Udom Emmanuel as the Special Guest of Honour, the FCT Minister - Muhammed Musa Bello as Co-host and members of the National Assembly within and outside Akwa Ibom State will be a fertile ground for us to intimate the world of the numerous achievements we have recorded over the years, our limitations and strategies being put in place to surmount them. Members of the public are hereby invited to join us at the fiesta.

Top in the Community’s agenda is the completion of the 9 storey Ibom Bowl House at the Jahi District of Abuja, for which building plan has been approved by the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) in readiness for the commencement of construction work by the contractors in expectation of other interested investors. This is in addition to other lofty ideas Akwa Ibom Community, Abuja is currently piloting.

The litany of success we have accomplished wouldn’t have been possible without the co-operation and active participation of members who have continually availed us their unalloyed support. The opportunity of this fiesta is indeed a new dawn for all Akwa Ibom sons and daughters all over the world to raise their heads high with pride for the privilege of telling our story by ourselves.

Consequently, Parents, guardians, religious houses/leaders, Government, development partners, Leaders of thought, Other Community development Associations, Cultural Groups/Commissions, Diaspora Affairs Commission, Embassies, National Assembly and all critical stakeholders in the information, Cultural and attitudinal Re-orientation/preservation Advocacy Groups is admonished to wake up to this challenge and re-strategize on their mandates with regards to cultural preservation even as we collectively commit and thinker avenues of celebrating the culture that unites us.
