chisomkachy: The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has withdrawn the alleged money laundering suit it filed at the Federal High Court against Lagos Speaker Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa.
Naija News understands that the anti-graft did not give any particular reason for its application for withdrawal.
Following the application to withdraw, Justice Nicholas Oweibo discharged the ‘lien/Post No Debit’ placed on Obasa’s three accounts in Standard Chartered Bank.
The accounts are (US Dollars) 0001852063; (Current) 0001852056 and (Saving) 5002309624.
The judge also set aside the ex-parte orders he made on September 15, 2020, which led to the freezing of the accounts.
Recall that the court on September 15, 2020, granted an interim order freezing Obasa’s accounts following the EFCC’s application in a suit marked FHC/LCS/1064/2020.
The agency had said it was investigating the Speaker for the alleged offences of conspiracy, diversion of funds, abuse of office and money laundering.
But Justice Oweibo, on August 16, 2023, heard the application to unfreeze the accounts in his chamber.
During the hearing, the EFCC was represented by Mr. Sulaiman I. Sulaiman, while Obasa was represented by Mr. Adeyinka Olumide-Fusika (SAN).
The EFCC lawyer told the court that the application to unfreeze the accounts was pursuant to Section 44(2)(K) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and Sections 26, 29 and 34 (1) of the EFCC (Establishment) Act, 2004, and under the court’s inherent jurisdiction.
Section 44 of the Constitution concerns constitutional rights to property.
Justice Oweibo held: “It is hereby ordered that an order is hereby granted to the respondent/applicant setting aside the ex-parte orders of this court made on the 15th day of September 2020 upon the ex-parte motion of the Applicant/ Respondent in relation the funds of the Respondent/Applicant domiciled in the accounts stated in the following schedule:
“ACCOUNT NAME, FINANCIAL ACCOUNT INSTITUTIONS, TYPE OF ACCOUNT, 1. Mudasiru Ajayi Obasa, Standard Chartered, (US Dollars) 0001852063 2. Mudasiru Ajayi Obasa, Standard Chartered (Current) 0001852056 3. Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa, Standard Chartered (Saving) 5002309624.
“Issued at Lagos, under the seal of this Honourable Court and by the hands of the Presiding Judge this 16th day of August 2023.”

Nemere2020: The Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy Chief Olawale Edun has said the last time Nigeria’s economy looked stable was about a decade ago.
He made this statement during his maiden press conference as Minister of Finance where he outlined President Bola Tinubu’s vision, agenda and strategy for the economy.
He said, “I think as we all know, we are not where we should be. The economy is barely growing above the rate of population growth.
“But it was not always so, and I think in trying to look at the way forward, if we now have a situation of slow growth, double-digit inflation, weak/depreciating exchange rate, as well as security concerns that are resulting in an economy that is not growing and not taking Nigerians out of poverty.
“If we think back to the last time when the economy was stable- when it was growing, when inflation was low, and the interest rate was affordable, that period was about a decade ago. Growth was about 6% in 2013 and 2014.”
anonimi: How Indorama sustains manufacturers, boosts Nigeria’s FX earnings
Indorama Eleme Petrochemicals Limited (IEPL) has emerged as a major value creator in the Nigerian economy. It is responsible for the survival, growth and sustenance of many manufacturing companies in Nigeria today. A large number of plastic and allied firms depend on the Eleme-based company for petrochemical resins (or polymer resins) which serve as their raw materials.
The petrochemical company is just one of the several subsidiaries of Indorama-Nigeria Group, which also comprises Indorama Eleme Fertilizer & Chemicals Limited (IEFCL), Indorama PET Nigeria Limited, and Indorama Port Operations.
Since Indorama Corporation of Indonesia became core investor in the old Eleme Petrochemicals Company Limited (EPCL) in 2006 through privatisation programme of the Federal Government, the group has become a game changer in the Nigerian economy.
The petrochemical company has solved the major challenge facing a number of manufacturers— poor access to raw materials. Rather than scramble for foreign exchange to import inputs, the company ensures that manufacturers have access to their critical raw materials, enabling them to save costs and improve margins.
The major resins used by plastic and allied companies are polyethylene and polypropylene. Indorama produces about 45 grades of these products for various industries. About 600 of such companies in Nigeria depend on IEPL for their survival. They are estimated to have over 90,000 workers.
proudly9ja: To be honest, in line with the last poster's sarcasm and Lugards insult on the same people he governed, I have thought long about the black race and I think we have a very big deficiency.
With benefit of current knowledge of blacks doing us proud all around the world, I do not think this deficiency stems from a biological point, rather, I think its social. The way the black man reasons is very different from the way other races reason. We are comfortable with the way we live our lives, no matter how poor it may seem or how many are dying from diseases. We look for solutions to problems rather than look inwards. Our forefathers looked for cures from the gods, we look for them from our new gods (the white man). I do not know how to categorise this problem. I used to think it was mental laziness, now Im not sure anymore.
The blackman is also so comfortable with old ways of doing things and not until someone else tries a new way and proves it right, we will not even think of changing. Think about it, our forefathers ate with their bare hands, we still do the same in 2009 over 1000 years later. Our forefathers climbed the palm tree with a rope or whatever they call that round thing they used around their waist, now, more than a century years later, we still use the same 'technology' for climbing palm trees. Is this also mental laziness or just a refusal to stick to status quo? No wonder there are no researches going on in oir universities, no new ideas coming out from the brilliant professors we have in our academia.
The black man sure has a problem. As insulting as it may seem, Lugard's talk raised some issues and I think we should take a look at ourselves and ask, ''what is our problem''
Finally, I have concluded that its a social problem. Its in our community, in our environs and its the mentality that we carry about, its our refusal to accept change. We want things to continue the way they are whether good or bad, as long as I am alive, then its ok, forgetting that whatever killed Dele and Adamu or Chukwudi, can also come back and do same to me.
17 years later, have we addressed this social problem, the mindset that we carry around our refusal to accept change that you concluded were harmful to our collective and sustainable progress as blacks?
Abi, we are even worse than we were in 2009, despite increased internet access for greater freedom to speak about our issues
anonimi: Neo-black Problem: Must Blacks Be Ruled by Whites in Order to Prosper?
In short, the neo-black dilemma may be framed as follows: is it better to live under white rule without political dignity but with basic life-sustaining standards for many;
or to live under black rule with illusory political dignity and without basic life- sustaining standards for the majority? @ @ The path forward for Africa lies in cultivating higher and adequate levels of personal and communal agential integrity as well as full personal responsibility and productivity. Not to mention creativity (including epistemic creativity), productive justice (such as merit and freedom), harmony and reconciliation at local and international levels, and a proper domestication of capitalism and other related values and institutions.
Africa must stop wasting her time on dreams of socialism because it is a system of wealth distribution primarily. Whereas, capitalism is a system of wealth creation primarily, and wealth has to be produced before it can be distributed.

Any idea why we are now doing japa to his neocolonial country, to increase the development gap between them and us? Something that Qataris and Emiratis are not doing, even though their countries were equally put together by Britain, and they didn’t get independence until 1971.
Do you know why these Asians (including Arabs) have made so much progress but we have failed to achieve much in over six decades of running our own countries in Africa
Lord Lugard, the former governor-general of Nigeria, in 1926, wrote his unfiltered thought about Nigerians. From his book, The Dual Mandates, come these excerpts: "In character and temperament, the typical African of this race-type is a happy, thriftless, excitable person, lacking in self-control, discipline, and foresight. Naturally courageous, and naturally courteous and polite, full of personal vanity, with little sense of veracity, fond of music and loving weapons as an oriental loves jewellery. His thoughts are concentrated on the events and feelings of the moment, and he suffers little from the apprehension for the future or grief for the past. His mind is far nearer to the animal world than that of the European or Asiatic, and exhibits something of the animals' placidity and want of desire to rise beyond the state he has reached.
"Through the ages, the African appears to have evolved no organised religious creed, and though some tribes appear to believe in a deity, the religious sense seldom rises above pantheistic animalism and seems more often to take the form of a vague dread of the supernatural. He lacks the power of organisation, and is conspicuously deficient in the management and control alike of men or business. He loves the display of power, but fails to realize its responsibility - he will work hard with a less incentive than most races. He has the courage of the fighting animal, an instinct rather than a moral virtue. In brief, the virtues and defects of his race -type are those of attractive children, whose confidence when it is won is given ungrudgingly as to an older and wiser superior and without envy. Perhaps, the two traits which have impressed me as those most characteristic of the African native are his lack of apprehension and his lack of ability to visualize the future"
Guys lets discuss the thoughts of Lord Lugard. he had a supremacist view obviously. But is he right in the way he describes Nigerians and Africans in general? How many of the issues that he raises are valid?

We are so backward in basic common services and public utilities.
How many of such vehicles have been maintained in the past, for our country of the highest number of children out of school and where maintenance technicians are poorly paid compared with politicians at the local government level?
If we have a high rate of unemployment, then why use inadequate forex to import sophisticated equipment that can hardly be maintained here, instead of using the money to educate children free, and pay street cleaners well to do the job and increase multiplier effect of the money in the local economy

If you have tenants that means the house is not in the village but in a small town, right?
Why have we allowed ourselves to be so focused on roads and bridges as democracy dividends, that our state governments no longer employ workers to make water available to all buildings?
What then is the point of saying we are modern people living in the 21st century, when we are clearly not
Keyin: The North largely created this problem for itself. For years, extremism and religious radicalization were tolerated—sometimes openly, sometimes quietly—by those who thought they could manipulate them for political or ideological gain. That miscalculation has now come full circle.
With insecurity spiraling out of control, Nigeria is being forced into difficult security decisions, including discussions about foreign military facilities. This is not about cheaply surrendering sovereignty; it is the consequence of failing to confront terrorism early, decisively, and without religious or regional bias.
If terrorism had been tackled firmly from the start, there would be no conversation today about foreign drone refueling stations on Nigerian soil.
Since when did Jagaban of Borgu and Alhaji Lie Mohammed become northerners
EkoIle1: It is now abundantly clear that President Jonathan has finally bared his fangs confirming what was widely speculated. By declaring a state of emergency in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa, he has intimidated and emasculated the governors of these States. We are witnessing a dangerous trend in the art of governance and a deliberate ploy to subvert constitutional democracy.
The body language of the Jonathan administration leads any keen watcher of events with unmistakable conclusion of the existence of a surreptitious but barely disguised intention to muzzle the elected governments of these states for what is clearly a display of unpardonable mediocrity and diabolic partisanship geared towards 2015.
Borno and Yobe states have been literally under armies of occupation with the attendant excruciating hardship experienced daily by the indigenes and residents of these areas. This government now wants to use the excuse of the security challenges faced by the Governors to remove them from the states considered hostile to the 2015 PDP/Jonathan project.
Let me be quick to say that this administration will be setting in motion a chain of events the end of which nobody can predict. Experience has shown clearly that actions, such as this one under consideration, often give root to radical ideologies and extremist tendencies, a direct opposite of the intended outcome of unwarranted and unintelligent meddlesomeness. The present scenario playing out in the country reminds one of the classical case of a mediocre craftsman who continually blames the tools of his trade for his serial failure but refuses to look at his pitiable state with a view to adjusting.

Splashme: The first civilian governor of Lagos State, Alhaji Lateef Jakande, on Tuesday, said that the cancellation of the Lagos metroline project in 1985 was a major mistake and disservice to many Nigerians.
Jakande spoke in Lagos during the launch of a book which chronicled his life in politics and journalism.
The book, entitled, ‘Jakande: Leadership in Action’ is written by Dr. Bola Olaosebikan, who told the audience at the event that the All Progressives Congress presidential candidate, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), was not responsible for the cancellation of the project.
Jakande said, “Reflecting on the metroline project, I think it is a major disservice to many Nigerians. Imagine how many people would have benefitted. It would have made life easier and changed the face of transport in Lagos. Whoever cancelled it or gave the advice towards its cancellation didn’t do right.”
The former governor asked Nigerians not to vote for unserious leaders in the coming polls, saying the elections presented Nigerians with a good opportunity that should not be squandered.
Expressing the hope that Nigeria would soon overcome its developmental challenges, Jakande said hope would be actualised faster if credible people emerged as leaders in the next dispensation.
He said, “This book comes at a very auspicious time in Nigeria’s history as we need leaders who can act. We need leaders who would not compromise the standards of good governance. God has blessed this nation the most in Africa, although we have not reached where we should be; with the right leaders, Nigeria would overcome its challenges.”

BeeBeeOoh: The First Lady of Nigeria, Oluremi Tinubu, has urged Nigerian youths to be hard-working, saying, “There is no food for lazy man.”
Mrs Tinubu said this during a courtesy visit to the palace of Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, in Ile-Ife, Osun State, on Thursday.
She noted that while the Tinubu-led administration is working hard to provide sustainable solutions to the current challenges facing the country, Nigerians should also work hard to provide for themselves.
The first lady maintained that the government will do all it takes to ensure that Nigerians are not disappointed and called for patience with Tinubu’s administration.
Mrs Tinubu said: “There is no food for the lazy man; even God worked for six days and rested on the seventh day.
“Nigeria is a land that’s flowing with milk and honey, but we need to sustain it for generations to come.
“God has richly blessed my family before getting to the presidency and we are content with what we have.
“What is happening in the country, we are just two years into our administration, we are not the cause of the current situation. We are trying to fix and secure the future.
“I have embarked on several journeys but it seems that people are not seeing what God is doing in the land. Nations across the globe want to do business with us, legally, on the table. There is a government in power now that they know it is accountable.
“We are trying all our efforts to ensure that the economy is stabilised and the masses are living meaningful lives since the removal of fuel subsidy.”

Babasessy: The Awolowo rebirth in the Southwest has inspired gongs, songs and rhetoric of sorts. But they have missed one point.
It occurred to me in Abeokuta last week amidst the big crowds and euphoria of the swearing-in of Senator Ibikunle Amosun as governor. In all the states from Lagos to Edo, where Awo has witnessed ideological resurgence, hardly a single family member has played a role.
So we have an Awo family without an Awo. That is an irony. But history overwhelms us with this sort of twist. Obafemi Awolowo toiled for his reputation. His roots were lowly, he toiled to school both home and abroad, launched into careers in law, business, journalism and eventually politics. He carved a niche for himself, and became the first methodical and charismatic leftist in our history. Other leftists abounded but they did not inspire comparable drama and following.
He faced tribulations, went to jail, failed in elections, won a few, but he imprinted his ideas and legacy in the country, and no single mortal has beaten him in the history of this country. His greatest achievement was in the area of ideas, and that was how he fashioned a family. Most families are born of biology but his issued from ideology. That family suffered with him.
In a spoof of Jesus Christ, these were the men who followed him in his teachings, and endured with him in his temptations. So he formed a kingdom for them in the Southwest, in the old Western Region, presiding over his projects, his legacies and people.
In all of these, the family he had was not his flesh and blood. In another spoof of Christ, who were his family anyway? Those who were with him must be counted as his family. So, I combed in the ambience of Babatunde Raji Fashola (SAN), and I found none. I went to Ogun, I frisked the crowd under Amosun’s bower, hardly any. Around Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola in Osun, I could not lay a finger. With Governor Kayode Fayemi in Ekiti, where are the forbears of Awo? Yet, I can hear the chants of Awo. Hardly in any of the inaugural speeches or any of their other public intervention would you miss the philtre and filter of Awo from these gentlemen. To parody Novelist Joseph Conrad, they are the sparks from Awo’s sacred fire, the messengers of the might within the man.
Already all of them are pursuing the legacy ideas of Awo: free education, free health services, infrastructural development, urban renewal and economic engineering.
Lagos has posted itself as the John the Baptist. The others are putting up valiant efforts, and the world of course is watching to see how well they will perform. It will call for great work, resourcefulness and cooperation. They are the real Awoists, and Awo was a man of rigour and vigour.
The Awo son that many expected to take after the father was Olusegun, who unfortunately died in a car crash. We shall never know if he could have pulled it off. But the others have not shown much of the paterfamilias’ brio and depth. In the past decade, under this republic, they have blended with the wrong crowd. Even H.I.D, hobnobbed with Alao-Akala, who brought illiteracy to governance; with Oyinlola who turned the grace of office into a hell-hole of despots; with Daniel who could not arrest his quick fall into megalomania.
I wrote once that this woman whom Awo once described as the jewel of inestimable value has lost value to his cause. If he came back to life, he would have committed the extraordinary act of divorce after death. Even his newspaper, The Tribune, has so stumbled and fallen that it swims in Awo’s vomit.

Ibusho: The Federal Government on Friday received a $2.25b foreign exchange support facility from the African Import-Export Bank.
The Minister of Finance, Wale Edun, confirmed this to Arise TV, said it is the first tranche of the $3.3bn facility from the bank. He noted that the loan was aimed at resolving the acute FX shortage that has hampered the economy.
According to the report monitored by our correspondent, the balance of $1.05bn will be received in the first week of January.
Edun stated that work has commenced for solutions to Nigeria’s economic challenges.
In August, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited announced that it had secured a $3bn emergency loan from the Afrexim Bank to stabilise the country’s volatile foreign exchange market.
