For the records, I don't like joining issues with people with zero knowledge as to the situation of this very important project that will touch not just Anambra but the SE region for greater good. This project is a PPP project and it involves a lot of people like Former Commonwealth Secretary General Anyaoku who is the chairman of Orient Petroleum. I am very certain that Anyaoku will not dabble into anything that will taint his integrity. Below was the video about 6 months ago. The next video/pictures that will enter the cyberspace is the progress of work on the runway/Tarmac etc. Thank you all. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eKz1kxYXoDI&t=88s |

South East Governors Urged To Stand Firm Against Land For Ranching 12 JULY 2018 More commendations have trailed the Southeast Governors' unanimous rejection of donation of land for ranching in the region. This was observed when the ABS engaged some of the state residents in an interview on the recent development, in Awka. Reacting to the issue, the National President Anambra State Association of Town Unions, ASATU, Chief Alex Onukwue who is also the Deputy State President Ohaneze Ndi-Igbo, lauded the Southeast Governors on the decision, saying that the region as the area with the smallest land mass in the federation, has no land to donate to herdsmen and the federal government for ranching or the likes. Chief Onukwue who described cattle rearing as a private business of a section of the country, urged the federal government to make provision for the herdsmen in the North as the northerners are the people with largest land mass and are domiciled in the business. Contributing, the Head of Department History and International Studies, Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka, Professor Dan Chukwu, applauded the Governors for speaking the mind of the people, describing the decision as a right move. Professor Chukwu observed that land donation or leasing has caused much problem in the country in the past, and urged the Governors to backup the decision with action, and to ensure that the implementation goes beyond Urban centers to checkmate the excesses of the herdsmen in the rural areas. Also speaking, an Awka resident Mr. Chuma Omego, advised the Federal government to concentrate on how to put an end to the incessant killings in the country, not on how to better the business of a section of the country. |
Anambra traders risk jail sentence over alleged revenue diversion Awka- Anambra State government has threatened to send leaders of the various markets to jail for allegedly diverting revenues collected in the various markets in the state. The state commissioner for commerce and industry, Dr. Christian Madubuko, who issued the threat during a meeting he held with leaders of the Bridge Head Market, Onitsha, observed that the state government was losing billions of naira revenue due to corrupt practices by market leaders. Among the allegations were that most market leaders printed many fake receipts with which they use to defraud government, adding that while people were made to pay the stipulated levies, they never knew they were issued fake receipts in most cases. Madubuko, who was accompanied by security operatives during the meeting, came face to face with allegations and counter allegations over the manner government revenue was ending up in private pockets. For instance, hundreds of shops were being constructed daily in various places in Onitsha, but in most cases, the market leaders collect revenue from them without paying to government coffers. The commissioner, who was visibly worried, said he called the meeting because since he assumed office there had been series of allegations against the president general of the Head Bridge Market, Mr. Sunday Obinze, adding that some of the traders even wrote petitions, while some came personally to the ministry to complain. He said the annoying aspect of the situation was that the said chairman allegedly boasted that nothing would happen to him because he had allegedly paid his way through with N20 million gratification. He said: “We are looking for huge sums of money and we must get it. First of all, I want all line chairmen to give us full evidence of where the monies are, from 2015 to date, otherwise some people will go to jail. I want all the photocopies of tickets issued to people. I have proof that illegal tickets are circulating in the markets and this is a big financial sabotage.” Some of the traders had accused their chairman of printing over 10 types of illegal receipts, which were being used to collect revenue without remitting same to government and called on the state government to ban the use of receipts issued in the markets because they were fake. They also accused the chairman of diverting the N10 million released to the traders for project execution in the market, while the N5 million realized during revenue drive in the market was not paid to government. Meanwhile, the state government said it would introduce Close Circuit Television, CCTV, in all the markets, starting with the Onitsha Main Market as a way of reducing crime in the markets. The project was started two years ago, but was stopped following disagreement between the traders and government, but the state government said weekend that the was need to have it in place as it is obtained in developed countries. |

It is not so true. Because all those people made it because they were in America where government provided all the enabling environment and infrastructures. Anambra State Commends Okada Operators, Security Agencies and Anambra Over Full Compliance on Restriction of Okada Operations in Awka and Onitsha. 1. The Anambra State Government wishes to thank all commercial motorcyclists in the state capital, Awka and in Onitsha, the commercial nerve of the Southeast geopolitical zone, for complying fully with the restriction of operation of motorcycle taxis, popularly known as Okada, in these two cities and environs which was implemented on Sunday, July 1st, 2018. 2. The Government also wishes to commend the Association of Okada Operators of Nigeria, Anambra State branch, for ensuring that its members in Awka and Onitsha abided by the legitimate order made in the overriding interest of the people of Anambra State. 3. The Government, in addition, wishes to express gratitude to security agencies in the state, including the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), Operation Clean and Healthy Anambra (OCHA) Brigade, as well as various local government outfits, for the tremendous success recorded in the first forty-eight hours of the policy. 4. We also thank the people of Anambra State for their great understanding, cooperation and support. They have always been with this administration every inch of the way because they know that every policy has been designed to take them to the next level and make Anambra State truly the Light of the Nation. 5. Despite the huge success recorded in compliance with the restriction order on Okada operations in Awka and Onitsha, the State Government is aware of certain challenges with the implementation of the new policy. For instance, some people went late to church yesterday because there were not enough vehicles in the inner streets to transport people early enough to their destinations. This very problem was, however, solved in most places within a few hours as tricycle operators moved into these areas. 6. Still, we are not oblivious that the erstwhile Okada riders in Awka and Onitsha have yet to receive the 1000 seven-seat shuttle buses which the Anambra State Government has ordered for them from Japan at the cost of N765million and will be handed over to them at the exact prices at which they were procured. The Government will bear the management charges because it regards the replacement of commercial motorcycles with buses to be owned by the former Okada riders as a key economic empowerment programme for the poor in society. 7. To quicken the process of accessing the interest-free loan for the shuttle buses from the Anambra State Small Business Agency (ASBA), prospective bus owners must be identified by the Okada Operators Association in Awka and Onitsha as bona fide members. They will then go for one week training to be conducted by the Anambra State Vehicle Inspection Office and the FRSC. On satisfactory completion of the training, they can apply to ASBA for the loan which has to be repaid within 18 months. They are required to pay an initial deposit of N100,000; those who cannot afford the deposit can form groups of two or three persons or cooperative societies to be eligible to apply for the facility. They will sign an undertaking to pay some money every two weeks until the loan is repaid. 8. The empowerment programme for the Okada riders has understandably been generating acute interest across the nation probably because this is the first time in the history of Nigeria that such a programme has been developed. However, we would like to reiterate for the umpteenth time that only registered Okada riders who are members of the Association of Okada Operators in Awka and Onitsha are eligible to participate in the programme. 9. Once again, we thank all the stakeholders in Anambra State for their support of the new policy on the use of motorcycles in Awka and Onitsha. God bless Anambra State. Signed: C. Don Adinuba Commissioner for Information & Public Enlightenment |
