I feel the love overwhelmingly and remain deeply grateful for it all.

I am truly honoured by the love and confidence shown by you all and feel profoundly humbled. However, I respectfully emphasise that the process for the selection of the Awujale of Ijebuland is a sacred and time-honoured tradition, governed strictly by established customs. As the saying goes, ‘ilufẹ́mil’óyè’ it is the town that bestows the crown and I feel the love from my people, which is why, in the interest of preserving the sanctity, dignity, and integrity of Ijebu tradition, I, Omooba Abimbola Onabanjo, humbly appeal to supporters, well-wishers, and members of the public to kindly refrain from referring to me as the Awujale or circulating materials that suggest a conclusion has already been reached.

I remain committed to upholding the values, unity, and heritage of Ijebuland and respectfully urge all concerned to allow the rightful processes to take their course.

No fewer than 95 aspirants — made up of 94 princes and one princess — have emerged from the Fusengbuwa Ruling House as contenders for the vacant Awujale stool of Ijebu land.

The contestants were nominated on Monday at a family meeting held at Bisrod Hall, GRA, Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, to kick off the formal process of selecting the next paramount ruler of Ijebu.

The exercise was presided over by the Chairman of the ruling house, Otunba Abdulateef Owoyemi, alongside his deputy, Prince Adedokun Ajidagba, and the Vice Chairman, Prof. Fassy Yusuf. The Secretary to the Ijebu-Ode Local Government, Abiodun Oke, and other officials were present as observers.

Among the nominees are notable figures including Giwa Abiodun Onanuga, husband of former Ogun State Deputy Governor, Mrs Yetunde Onanuga; Dr Kunle Hassan, an eye specialist and founder of Eyes Foundation Hospital; and Otunba Fatai Arowolo of Aron Construction. The only female aspirant is lawyer Oluwakemi Onanuga.

The Awujale throne became vacant in July 2025 following the death of Oba Sikiru Adetona, who ruled Ijebu land for 65 years and died at the age of 91.

Each aspirant was nominated through two representatives — one to propose and another to second the nomination — after which the family formally recorded their acceptance.

Speaking after the meeting, Owoyemi commended members of the ruling house for conducting the process peacefully and in unity. He said the family had relied on traditional consultations, including Ifa divination, to guide the process and expressed confidence that the kingmakers would choose the right candidate.

“We have successfully and harmoniously nominated 95 candidates. It is now up to the kingmakers to select one of them as the next Awujale. By God’s grace, we expect the new Awujale to emerge within the next one month,” he said.

Owoyemi also disclosed that all contestants had signed an undertaking to accept the final outcome and avoid litigation, adding that the family expected strict adherence to the agreement.

The selection process has drawn wide attention, especially following the interest expressed by Fuji music star, Alhaji Wasiu Ayinde, popularly known as KWAM1. However, the Fusengbuwa Ruling House has maintained that Ayinde is not a member of the family and therefore not eligible to contest.

Ayinde had earlier approached the Ogun State High Court in Ijebu-Ode seeking to stop the selection process, but the court dismissed his application. He later withdrew the case without giving reasons.

In a protest letter to Governor Dapo Abiodun, Ayinde, through his lawyer, Dr Wahab Shittu (SAN), alleged that the ruling house had issued directives outside the provisions of the Chieftaincy Declaration and Ogun State’s Obas and Chiefs Law, accusing the family leadership of attempting to exclude him from the process.

However, Prof. Fassy Yusuf, Vice Chairman of the Fusengbuwa Ruling House, confirmed receipt of the letter but dismissed it as “arrant nonsense” with no impact on the ongoing selection exercise.
