Relegated Ikorodu United will have their hands full in a week 36 encounter against leaders, Rangers International of Enugu at the MKO Abiola Stadium, Abeokuta on Sunday. The match holds nothing for the host but may decide Rangers fate in their desire to win the league after 32 years of waiting. Ikorodu United’s relegation was sealed after losing 1-0 to Plateau United last Sunday in Jos. Prior to the match, Ikorodu United have had a fine run of form with, prompting observers to question why they chose to leave it late before beginning to win matches. Before that loss to Plateau United, the Lagos-based side had gone five matches unbeaten, winning four, with a famous victory against Heartland in Owerri highlighting their fine run. But against Rangers on Sunday, Ikorodu United will only play for pride and perhaps hope to earn the bragging right as the team that ended Rangers title hope of elongated it. Incidentally, Ikorodu United have won only seven times in the current campaign, while also drawing 11 times. But for FC Giwa, they are last on the log with 32 points from 34 matches. But Rangers will derive inspiration from the fact that a win in Sunday’s match will all but give them the league title given that they make their home advantage count in their last match against El-Kanemi Warriors of Maiduguri. Besides, the Flying Antelopes will derive huge hope from the fact that Ikorodu United have falling prey at home to so many clubs including Rivers United, Shooting Stars of Ibadan and Wikki Tourists of Bauchi. But one fact stands. The Oga Boys have not lost any match since they relocated to Abeokuta, with such heavyweights as Kano Pillars (4-1) and Enyimba (3-1) suffering defeats in the ancient town. Whether Rangers will be one of their victims in their new abode remains to be seen but this is one record the fans of the Flying Antelopes will find disturbing given that their club has won only twice away this season. This also is one match Rangers need to call up the entire arsenal in their armory in order to win because fierce challenger, Rivers United, will be at home to Abia Warriors in a match pundits have already given that to the Port Harcourt side. The match will be live on super sport

Sports Radio Brila FM and Megalectrics Limited became the first radio stations to be issued Radio broadcast rights of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) following the signing of separate Memorandum of Understanding between the stations and the League Management Company (LMC). Megalectrics Limited based in Lagos is the owners of radio broadcast licenses of Beat FM, Classic FM and Naija FM while Sports Radio Brila, the first all sports radio station in Nigeria operates the Brila 88.9 FM stations in Lagos, Onitsha, Abuja and Kaduna. A statement from the LMC described the issuance of the non-exclusive rights to the stations as ‘part of our deliberate strategy to take the Nigeria Professional Football League live matches to the people where they are especially in the inner cities and villages”. The LMC noted that studies indicated that radio remains the most preferred medium of information in Nigeria and “it is also based on this that we sought radio broadcast partners to take this league which is a strong unifying platform for Nigerians to the people, most of who cannot afford alternative sources of electricity power”. In the deal, the radio stations are entitled to undertake live broadcast of NPFL matches and also produce twice weekly preview and review shows featuring interviews, analysis and public opinions on the players, the matches and the clubs. The LMC said it will welcome interests from other radio broadcast stations that have the capacity to undertake live broadcasts of NPFL matches. “The expansion of the NPFL reach is part of our vision to grow the brand, offer greater and extensive experiences of the matches through the media and also deliver value to the fans and sponsors”, the LMC said. It further expressed optimism that with the entry of the two radio stations with their different audience segments, “the NPFL is poised to add new target groups that includes the eclectic urban youth segment and those of the inner cities”. There are no right fees attached to this deals as we consider it as a core social investment activity of the LMC to grow the NPFL”. |

Yes! Rangers International, The Pride of the East, are the most interesting team so far this season. Not only in terms of football but generally everything associated with the round leather. I will take my time to take round for you to see what I mean. Now the administrative structure of this club has improved greatly unlike what is obtained two or three season ago. Thanks to the sports loving Governor whose immense contributions towards rebranding the club is evident and commendable. In a bid to show how committed they are, the State government released a very huge amount in the tone of 34 million Naira for the execution of the Federation Cup. The club reciprocated by toppling Akure city 2-0 in Round 64 fixture that held in Abuja. At Rangers, commercial department has also witnessed change as new initiatives is playing off. For instance, the introduction of Rangers Table water in a 30 thousand capacity Stadium is a very huge investment that every good business man will love to venture. Also the introduction of Popcorn is a way of generating funds at home matches that has experienced a turnaround since this season began. The latest is the introduction of Night matches by the League Management Company (LMC) which is laudable initiative that have seen clubs like Rangers massively benefited from it. Massive turnout in Enugu during night matches has also contributed to the club skyrocketed revenue generation. Players get their salaries as at when due, match bonuses are no longer delay as before. Fans enjoy Rangers popcorn!
