EducationRe: LASU Vs IBADAN POLY : Nairaland Interschool Debate: WINNER: IBADAN POLY by apache1989(m): 10:31am On May 17, 2015
Fynestboi:
SCHOOL: THE POLYTECHNIC, IBADAN.
NAME: Sammyscholar
TOPIC: Legalization of Abortion in Nigeria: a Freedom of Choice
STANCE: supporting

In every nook of Nigeria today, it is common to see countless children wondering about with no one to point at has their parent or where to point at as their place of abode. Many of them are product of unwanted pregnancy whose parent had dumped on the street few days after they were born. Cases abound of babies dumped on refuse sites, walk-ways, etc. Many of them were never planned for in the first place. Such children are those that grow to become menace to the society.

More pressing are the cases of pregnant women who had severe complications [that sometimes result in mortality] as result of their bad state of health. So also are the unfortunate rape victims who had to contend with unwanted pregnancies that they had never wished nor bargained for. They [in most cases] had to live with the ugly stigma for the rest of their lives. All these could have been contained [and could only be contained] if there is an instrumental law legalizing safe abortion so women can have proper control of their lives.

Dishearteningly, whilst many have been advocating safe abortions as the way to go, some have vehemently disagreed, calling it barbaric, inhumane, murder and all sorts of names. As a pro-choice and a progressive, I make bold to say: LEGALIZATION OF ABORTION IN NIGERIA IS A FREEDOM OF CHOICE.

We cannot continue to deny women the right to make choice about issues affecting their lives and expect a peaceful and serene society. Every woman must have the right to choose whether or not to have an early termination of pregnancy according to her own will. Abortion is not a murder to a pregnant woman whose life is in danger and could only survive by getting ride of her pregnancy. Abortion is never inhumane for a rape victim whose aspirations have been traumatized and could only be revived by aborting her unsolicited pregnancy. What do we say of parent that has had the optimum children they can cater for but, mistakenly, had a pregnancy that could destabilize their family forever? Of course, having an abortion is the way to go! Or can we contest the fact that no one is above mistake?

Many anti-abortion advocates may say abortion denies the fetus the right to life. But it does not! Getting ride of pregnancy when it poses a threat to the life of a woman is not a murder. It becomes a murder only when there are no solid reasons to justify the action. Many may even go further to say abortion is dangerous for the lives of women. It is not! It only becomes dangerous when it is handled by illegal and unprofessional health workers; which are more reasons why abortion should be legalized so women can have access to legal and quality abortion procedures under the care of professional health practitioners.

Many countries that have made it illegal to have abortion are now nursing their wounds. One of such countries, Romania, under its dictator, Nicolai Ceausescu, made declaration that the country's policy of legal and safe abortion be reversed. Instead of reducing abortion, it led to the mushroom of underground abortion networks. Countless maternal deaths were recorded as a result of unsuccessful abortions handled by illegal and unprofessional health workers. Countless babies died for lack of medical care, food, and maternal beds. According to Joyce Arthur's article published on ‘pro CHOICE action network’ site in 1999; "the country [Romania] was so embarrassed at its soaring maternal and infant mortality rate that it abandoned international standards for recording them. Over 20 years, an estimated 10,000 women died needlessly from illegal abortion alone. Ceausescu's action led to his down fall [he was executed in 1989], and it resulted in thousands of abandoned and neglected children whose plight moved the world"

In conclusion, abortion is not a murder; it is not a denial of life if it is done at the right time and under the right conditions. Having access to safe abortion is the only way to protect our society against proliferation of: maternal and infant mortality, crippling emotional handicaps, troubled home and family, abuse and neglect of children by parents, early/unplanned parent hood, juvenile delinquency/criminality, and other ugly occurrences.

Lest I close, I once again, established solidly that: legalizing abortion in Nigeria does not mean everyone must have abortion; it is only a freedom of choice and no woman should be forced against her will. Thank you.

Good Morning Nairalanders! I suppose the majority of us had a good Jamb score this 2015, so I seize this opportunity to congratulate you all. For as many that has not gotten up to 180 this year, I have come to tell you never to lose hope and dream greater and God will take you there.
Look through your phones and web pages again and sight that score, the 210,220,247,280,301 and so on! How many of you have returned the glory? Many might have forgotten that God gave them the perfect serenity in good health to study and get this results. Its by sleepless night and hard work, yet its never by your power. Many will start the race on a good note but what matters on this thread is how many will finish well and gain this admission into there various most preferred institutions.
Very quickly I will like to ask you, does God know about this step that you have taken / about taking? How many have heard from God on what school to choose and what course to study? Getting this right is even closer to finding purpose in life. Every persons want to be doctors but then who will be his nurse, were are the teachers who will bread our generation up just the way you were brought up?
Sometime four year back I wrote this jamb with the aim to study accounting in Unilorin, I was hard working, sleepless, and optimistic of gaining the admission just like many of you without seeking God first. The scripture says " seek ye first the kingdom of God and his righteousness then all other things shall be added unto you". At that moment I did well ( with a Jamb score of 246+ p. Utme of 74% and a bribe of #30000 ), but I did not get it right with God. Funny enough many with less that score were offered admission, they obtained mercy and grace and never hustled much as I did. The point I want to make here is that you know your God and its only by him that you can do exploits! Ask him to help you and don't base on your self effort.

After I have wasted years going to study accounting at the Polythecnic, guess what - I was furstrated out of school at my final year Hnd level. Thank God for Christ that is in me who pardoned me to take a second chance. Now i had to know him better and move closer to him for a relationship and I must tell you, he has been so mighty an has never done anything that won't catch my surprise.

I asked him he told me the school and the course of my study and I followed him. And him being an excellent God made me witness 197 of which i am not moved! Instead I rejoiced. Remember christ drove on a donkey into Jerusalem and at that time there were Stallions, Chariots and wagon he could have ordered. I chose Lasu and am vying for Economics and it is settled that I gain admission this year.

I want you to stop being ingrate about that Jamb score and surrender with believe what Jesus can do. Thank him more for the past and present, establish a relationship with him and you will get there in Jesus name.
