My own little cntribution, the representative from LASU has not realy done well. But he must be respected for representing out of thousands of LASU student on NL. My brother you have realy tried for representing.

To the IBADAN POLY guy, he has realy done well to convicned the audience even if president of a country reads through it, he/she would have a change of mind and legalize abortion. Am not a debator, but when you see one you would be happy to listen to them often.

Additionally, this goes to both LASU and IBADAN POLY representatives. Nobody is above gramatical error, but in a debating situation like this, please when posting alway re-read before posting so as not to reduce your marks.

Lastly I am an alumni of ibadan poly 2010 set. The former deputy speaker of NASTES.

The argument of poly Ibadan got me dozing, it not only English, the logicality was not present. First this is a legal issue, your spice of Legality was not there at all. No judicial citation.being a legal issue it has to be furnished with legal ingredient. All is saw was a fisherman argument

Well answered Team Lasu

Nice try sammyscholar am indeed proud of you.The debate is insightful and well presented even though its your 1st on nairaland debate.LASU have been represented times without number and they are not new to debate. In this case they have more points since opposing the topic is more favorable. It will be somewhat challenging to defend such a topic.

Nice one from the debaters! The major problem i observed as regards comments is "I must support my own person" while some of the comments are highly impressive and will build the "two" in preparing for future debates if they concentrate more on 'em...

Bravo to the Judges and the brain behind the debate.

Fynestboi:

SCHOOL: THE POLYTECHNIC, IBADAN.
NAME: Sammyscholar
TOPIC: Legalization of Abortion in Nigeria: a Freedom of Choice
STANCE: supporting

In every nook of Nigeria today, it is common to see countless children wondering about with no one to point at has their parent or where to point at as their place of abode. Many of them are product of unwanted pregnancy whose parent had dumped on the street few days after they were born. Cases abound of babies dumped on refuse sites, walk-ways, etc. Many of them were never planned for in the first place. Such children are those that grow to become menace to the society.

More pressing are the cases of pregnant women who had severe complications [that sometimes result in mortality] as result of their bad state of health. So also are the unfortunate rape victims who had to contend with unwanted pregnancies that they had never wished nor bargained for. They [in most cases] had to live with the ugly stigma for the rest of their lives. All these could have been contained [and could only be contained] if there is an instrumental law legalizing safe abortion so women can have proper control of their lives.

Dishearteningly, whilst many have been advocating safe abortions as the way to go, some have vehemently disagreed, calling it barbaric, inhumane, murder and all sorts of names. As a pro-choice and a progressive, I make bold to say: LEGALIZATION OF ABORTION IN NIGERIA IS A FREEDOM OF CHOICE.

We cannot continue to deny women the right to make choice about issues affecting their lives and expect a peaceful and serene society. Every woman must have the right to choose whether or not to have an early termination of pregnancy according to her own will. Abortion is not a murder to a pregnant woman whose life is in danger and could only survive by getting ride of her pregnancy. Abortion is never inhumane for a rape victim whose aspirations have been traumatized and could only be revived by aborting her unsolicited pregnancy. What do we say of parent that has had the optimum children they can cater for but, mistakenly, had a pregnancy that could destabilize their family forever? Of course, having an abortion is the way to go! Or can we contest the fact that no one is above mistake?

Many anti-abortion advocates may say abortion denies the fetus the right to life. But it does not! Getting ride of pregnancy when it poses a threat to the life of a woman is not a murder. It becomes a murder only when there are no solid reasons to justify the action. Many may even go further to say abortion is dangerous for the lives of women. It is not! It only becomes dangerous when it is handled by illegal and unprofessional health workers; which are more reasons why abortion should be legalized so women can have access to legal and quality abortion procedures under the care of professional health practitioners.

Many countries that have made it illegal to have abortion are now nursing their wounds. One of such countries, Romania, under its dictator, Nicolai Ceausescu, made declaration that the country's policy of legal and safe abortion be reversed. Instead of reducing abortion, it led to the mushroom of underground abortion networks. Countless maternal deaths were recorded as a result of unsuccessful abortions handled by illegal and unprofessional health workers. Countless babies died for lack of medical care, food, and maternal beds. According to Joyce Arthur's article published on ‘pro CHOICE action network’ site in 1999; "the country [Romania] was so embarrassed at its soaring maternal and infant mortality rate that it abandoned international standards for recording them. Over 20 years, an estimated 10,000 women died needlessly from illegal abortion alone. Ceausescu's action led to his down fall [he was executed in 1989], and it resulted in thousands of abandoned and neglected children whose plight moved the world"

In conclusion, abortion is not a murder; it is not a denial of life if it is done at the right time and under the right conditions. Having access to safe abortion is the only way to protect our society against proliferation of: maternal and infant mortality, crippling emotional handicaps, troubled home and family, abuse and neglect of children by parents, early/unplanned parent hood, juvenile delinquency/criminality, and other ugly occurrences.

Lest I close, I once again, established solidly that: legalizing abortion in Nigeria does not mean everyone must have abortion; it is only a freedom of choice and no woman should be forced against her will. Thank you.

My apologies, my feedback is coming late. Its a priviledge to be a judge on this debate.

SammyScholar of THE POLYTECHNIC, IBADAN did a good job of outlining and presenting his points and stating why he thinks abortion needs to be legalised.

The key argumentat that struck me was where he stated below;

He brought to our awarness how abortion viewed as a taboo is actually the saving grace in a positive way for a particular group of people.

My only criticism is that the writer did not try to discredit the popular stance of Pro- lifers which is that a foetus is a living being, killing them is therefore murder and an act of selfishness.

His argument basicly re emhapsised the fact that pro choicers are basicly selfish and care less about the life they carry inside of them but about the impact of the life on their lifestyle and future.

As for the the LASU poly rep.

1. He made no point in his argument, what he had up there was gibberish.

He did a good job of confusing his audience instead of enlightening them in respect to his stance with the use of bogus and unnecessary grammar.

2. I expected to see strong arguments like.
-What is life and where does it really begin.
-If life really begins at conception or at particular stage killing that life is murder.
- Pro choicers are simply trying to justify cold bold murder, because Killing a life just because one wants to shield ones self from its consequence is no different from killing a fellow man because you think his existence would make your life miserable.
- what should be preached is abstinence, use of contraceptives and support for people with unwanted pregnancy etc.

More grace to the participants. Thanks for the time and effort put into this.

#MathewBriggs

All is down and set, as the result is out and well. The battle was fierce and the brawl was severe as LASU and IBADAN POLY threw literal swords at each other after the battle line was drawn by US. Lots of word will not full a bushel, getting straight to the point. The winner can be obviously fathomed out of the previous posts but it needs to be officially done.

Therefore, I use this medium to declare IBADAN POLY as the WINNER of this duo contest after summing up a total score of 31.5/50 , defeating its very competitive counterpart, LASU who summed up a total score of 24.5/50. Thumbsup to both teams, you all made sense but this is a competition, there's no two winners.

WINNER : IBADAN POLY
