Another area to pay attention to is the quality of Engine oil used when servicing. |
While 22% reduction means you now require 78 litres where you were previously consuming 100 litres the real savings now comes by way of reduced maintenance costs and prolonged engine life. |
However we just concluded a trial with a fleet operator. His vehicle ( Armoured Truck ) consumed 1005 litres of diesel and covered 2874km in February. In March when we improved the quality of the diesel he was using for the same vehicle it covered 4737km using 1288 litres of diesel. From our calculations he reduced his consumption by 22% and his diesel expense bill by as much as 14%. |
It’s no secret that diesel quality affects reliability and cost of maintenance especially due to the damage of injector nozzles and fuel pumps. The present quality is such that trucks are consuming a lot more than they should. |
Evening All, Considering we are sharing challenges I thought I would present a challenge and share a solutuon |

There is a supermarket called Ebeano. It has several shops around Lagos. Some of its stores have a perfumery called ESSENZA that sell the Caroline Herraras, Guccis, Calvin Kleins, Giorgio Armanis, etc. The cheapest perfume Essenza sells is N15,000. In such stores Ebeano also has its own dedicated perfume section where they sell their own perfumes ranging from N700 to N5500. The fact is that both Ebeano and Essenza will sell perfumes. Both Essenza and Ebeano have employed people to sell perfumes regardless of their selling cost. If N8000 is high then perfumes sold by Ebeano will be appealing. If N8,000 is cheap then perhaps Essenza will be appealing. Options are and will always remain open. What we as a company is interested in is anyone currently selling / interested in marketing perfumes. This person will earn N50,000 + commission. The question the potential job seeker should be asking is whether the renumeration we are offering is comparable to what Essenza or Ebeano is currently paying or better. We do not expect the offer to appeal to everyone. If you are earning better it makes little sense for you to jump ship but what about those who are currently un-employed ? What do they do ? Oluwapresley: |
We are very much a Nigerian company. Do not forget that there are perfumes that cost between N11,000 and N110,000. People will always downgrade during recessionary times. So far more than 5 people have made contact by email. Perhaps they can see the opportunities others can't. Perhaps they have access to people who can still afford to buy perfumes. Des5: |
N8,000 to N11,000 |
Are you familiar with male and female perfumes ? Can you sell a minimum of 100 perfumes monthly ? A start up company in Lagos is in need of marketers. No particular experience is required. We market male and female fragrances to workers in banks, insurance companies, oil companies, etc. All you have to do is take our samples and show to prospective clients, If you are successful and sell a bottle after you have sold your target of 100 bottles then N500 commission is yours per bottle sold. If you go to an office with 50 workers and sell 50 bottles above your target then N25,000 commission is yours. The more clients you sell, the more you earn. @Iyalode You have to be careful when people condemn certain brands or viscosities without providing any empirical evidence. If 5w-20 or 5w-30 is bad why then is this the standard viscosity recommended by the car manufacturers? Those who are complaining of these viscosities do their experiences represent the majority or minority? You will notice if you search well on this forum that for every one person who complains there are several more who are not. There are people who complained of these viscosities only to later discover that their cars had unresolved issues that were highlighted and not created by these oils. Please do not limit yourself to the info available on Nairaland. There are several other places where you can get information on oils and their viscosities and how non conformity affects your particular vehicle. Try and join Ford forums where you will access a lot of information about your particular car. |
I am presently using MileMaster 5w-20 in a 2010 Honda Accord and MileMaster 5w-30 in a 2007 Toyota Yaris. I have been servicing these cars using this oils for more than 2 yrs now. The Honda has always used 5w-20 while the Yaris used to use Mobil XHP 20w-50 before I switched to MileMaster. I have never noticed any shortages in any of the cars regardless of the oil brand or viscosity used. I would advise people who notice shortages to investigate a little bit more before they lay blame on the oil viscosity or brand. |
chukel:From the time you changed to 5w-20 and switched back to 20w-50 before finally settling for 5w-30 have you had any mechanical repair work done to your engine ? If you don't mind my asking what year and size is your camry engine? I really appreciate the time you are making out to respond. |
chukel:Did it stop flowing ? Did it turn into sludge ? Was the oil getting short ? Exactly how did MileMaster engine oil nearly knock your engine ? Please share so we can all be informed. |
GAZZUZZ:Why MileMaster specifically? Is there something wrong with this oil ? |
chukel:Why Milemaster ? |
blackfm:MileMaster is only available in 5 litre gallon and it costs N6000 from Konga. If you buy 4 gallons the price drops to N5800. Check solutions plus ltd website for their nationwide dealers. Might be cheaper for you. |
To the best of my knowledge Coastal manufactures its synthetic blend oils using group 2 base oil stock. Mobil, Castrol, to name a few use group 3 base oil. The higher the base oil group the better the oil. This is not to say that Coastal won't do the job but the OP last year asked this same questions about MileMaster which uses group 3 base oil stocks last year and decided not to use it based on some comments on that thread. On every thread you will find people who have had good and nasty experiences. It never ends. The confusion goes on for the mere fact that we are all working under different circumstances being affected by a wide range of variables. Just conduct a bit of research on your own. Go to Coastal's website. They will be able to provide you with their data sheet. Compare it with those of Mobil, Castrol, Milemaster, etc. That should serve as a starting point. Go to pqiamerica.com. Compare the chemical composition of coastal versus the others. That should also help. |
drhappy:Semi -synthetic and Synthetic Blend mean the same thing. They were introduced to lengthen the Oil Change Interval. It is more of cost saving than technological advancement. Remember that in certain countries the labour charge for an oil change may cost more than the oil and filter. The data sheet of any good oil will state the lower and upper temperature limits that the oil will flow or resist thermal breakdown. Have you compared these limits for a conventional vs blend vs full synthetic ? That is the only way you can be sure that an engine might be "fried" using a particular motor oil as against using a better known / advertised brand. The Castrol site states the flash point for their 5w30 conventional and synthetic ( edge with synthec power ) power is greater than 200 degrees centigrade. Mobil is more accurate. Their 5w30 conventional is 221 degrees centigrade while their mobil 1 5w30 is 230 degrees centigrade. According to the Milemaster website the flash point of their 5w30 synthetic blend is 231 degrees centigrade. So in conclusion unless the RX engine reaches temperatures exceeding 231 degrees you are fine with milemaster or any oil sharing its characteristics. |
Seun:True. But you need to qualify it. A true synthetic is made using group IV or group V base oil stocks. This is what most European Oils Blenders use. Unfortunately most of the oils we personally import come from the United States which allows group III base oil stocks to be considered as synthetic. So we have a situation where oils made from group III base oil stocks can claim to be 100% Fully Synthetic provided they will be sold or manufactured in the United States. Castrol started this and many other Oil Manufacturers followed suit. Today most people rely on a known brand name rather than research as a guide in selecting motor oils for their cars forgetting that oil manufacturers from time to time alter the formulations that form the oils. I remember in the 90s when a certain synthetic oil was launched in Lagos claiming to last 25,000kms. Today we are told that the extended performance version of this oil will go 25,0000kms. So what does the normal version do today? If you conduct a search online you will find that the normal version is now being made using group III base oil stock while the extended performance version is made using group IV base oil stock. We shall get there slowly but surely and many of us will waste money in the process. |
@ Tumababa I wasnt my intention to call you out. I have come across people who sell conventional oil @ N3000 per litre so if you are selling synthetic at N2400 per litre you are definitely adding value. But herein lies the problem. Other people are doing exactly what you do just slightly cheaper because they place their items in a container containing cars. Upon arrival the car owner ends up clearing both the car and the oils without knowing. If you have ever witnessed containers being offloaded you will see what i mean. The agents always empty the container before the owner arrives. As i stated earlier your costs are high as so therefore your selling price will equally be high. The contact details of your competitor have already been provided by a nairalander. You might want to touch base with him to see how he is able to control his own costs and sell at nearly half your price. He sells in 5 litre jugs and not 1 litre bottles. On a closing note you seem to prefer either full synthetic or conventional but not something in-between simply because you are unaware of the percentage composition of the final product. Can it be worse that any of the 2 types of oil it was made from? Warm water cannot be worse than Hot or Cold water. |
After reading this thread this is my understanding so far. Synthetic oils are superior to semi-synthetic which are in turn superior to conventional. The cars that require full synthetic whether it is 5w-20 or 5w-30 will have it stated in the owners manual. There is no harm in using full synthetic even if your car does not require it. Lets now look at the mathematics. Does the performance gap btw conventional oil and full synthetic warrant the use of full synthetic ? Does the performance gap between semi-synthetic and full synthetic warrant the use of full synthetic? Full Synthetic oils whether Castrol, Valvoline, Mobil 1, etc comes at a bit of a premium in this country. We have someone offering 4.83 litres for sale @ N12000 even though same thing is US$22.66 @ Walmart Stores. My guess is that he probably is air freighting it and paying over $40+ as freight charges alone and so i can understand why he is suspicious of someone offering same thing @ N7000. Even at that wouldn't conventional or semi synthetic make better financial sense especially if your car does not require full synthetic? I ask these questions because i find that a lot of people recommended panadol extra when normal panadol is sufficient. The American Petroleum Institute has stated on several occasions that performance gaps across oil types today are not as wide as they were 20 years ago. The same amount being spent on Full Synthetic is sufficient to purchase conventional / semi-synthetic oil, oil filter, and tickets for 2 to watch a movie if we look as tumababa's asking price of N12000. Anyone reading this has access to the internet. Conduct your research yourself. Learn about the different oil types and then decide where you should fall in. On a closing note we should refrain from confusing / comparing Mobil 1 Extended Performance with Mobil 1. Mobil 1 does not last 15,000miles. Mobil 1 extended performance does. |
