The Middle-Belt Conscience Guard has reacted to the proposed nationwide exercise tagged Operation Python Dance III by the Nigerian Army. Recall that Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen Tukur Buratai, had announced that the military exercise would commence from January 1, 2019 and last till February 28. He said the exercise was in preparation against security challenges anticipated before, during and after the 2019 general election. However, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, kicked against planned nationwide military exercise, claiming that it was another plot to rig the 2019 general elections. Speaking on the development, the middle belt group said the exercise would rather boost voters’ confidence rather before, during and after the election. Sunday Onoja, the BoT chairman of the group, while addressing a press conference in Abuja, expressed optimism that the exercise would address areas in the Middle-Belt where the terrorists were once known to have sleeper cells. His words, “Our geo-political zone, the North-Central sits between the north (North East and North West geo-political zones) and the South (South-West, South-South and South-East geo-political zones). Whatever happens in any of these other geo-political zones therefore automatically affects the Middle-Belt. This makes us default stakeholders in whatever happens in these sister geo-political zones. “We can validly assert that a resurgence of Boko Haram will affect us because under the previous administration, Niger, Kogi, Plateau and Nasarawa states with the FCT were hotbeds of terrorists’ activities until the present administration came into office and appointed military service chiefs that secured the geo-political zone from terrorists. With the desperate push that Boko Haram is making to prove that it remains relevant, the Middle-Belt has no interest in seeing the group move southwards again as this will place them in our geo-political zone to the detriment of our people. continue reading

Roger Federer will have to do it the hard way if he is to win a record-extending seventh crown at the ATP Finals after an error-strewn 7-6 (4) 6-3 defeat by Kei Nishikori on Sunday. https://archivengr.com/federer-facing-uphill-task-after-poor-start/ The 37-year-old Swiss was given a huge ovation as he walked through sliding doors and dry ice into the packed arena, but was far from his best as he let a match that had looked under control slip away. His first-ever straight sets defeat in round-robin play in his 16th appearance at the elite season-ender means, he will go into Tuesday’s clash with Dominic Thiem knowing defeat could leave his title hopes hanging by a thread. “I haven’t thought about the match, to be honest. I haven’t had enough time. I wasn’t even thinking who I’m going to play next,” Federer told reporters minutes after walking off court. “I just know I need to do better than today. That’s pretty much it.” In spite of winning the Australian Open to take his Grand Slam haul to 20 and winning three other titles this year to reach 99 for his career, Federer’s season has rather tailed off. Having won the title in Basel and then losing an epic against world number one Novak Djokovic in Paris, he still arrived at the London venue as second-favourite. “I’ve been feeling fine,” he said. “It’s just that practice has been a bit all over the place. Practised in Queen’s, practised on the outside courts here, then center as well. “So it’s not always exactly the same conditions. Overall I thought I’m hitting the ball okay. The warm-up was totally fine.” Federer was two points from taking the opening set in the Lleyton Hewitt group showdown when he had Nishikori at 5-6 0-30 but played a poor tiebreak. He then broke at the start of the second set only to hand back the advantage immediately. The rest was not pretty and the ATP’s new “crowd decibel level” gizmo expected to get plenty of use as Federer went through his repertoire was pretty much redundant. “Unfortunately I couldn’t keep the lead that I got early. That was important at the end,” he said. “That was the key of the match. That 10-minute swing at the end of the first throughout maybe one-all in the second.” |

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed says President Muhammadu Buhari has delivered on his campaign promises, and deserves to be voted for the second term. Mohammed said this on Tuesday in Abuja when he appeared on the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) flagship programme, NAN Forum. He said the president had since the inception of his administration, three and half years ago, leveraged on his integrity and his acclaimed management of human and material resources. The minister said that the President had, at the inception of his administration, promised to tackle insecurity, fight corruption and revamp the economy. “Many people did not believe that we could hold inauguration ceremony at the Eagle Square because, until we came, the eagle square had not been used for several years. “As Buhari was being sworn-in, 20 out of the 27 Local

Government in Borno state and another four Local Governments in Adamawa state were under the effective control and occupation of Boko Haram. “Three and half years later, I can say without any fear of contradiction that not even an inch of our territory today is under the control of Boko Haram,” he said. He said that the score card of the Federal Government on corruption should not be viewed from the angle of the number of people arrested, prosecuted or jailed. The minister said that the fight should be seen from the measures put in place to ensure transparency in governance with the implementation of the Treasury Single Account (TSA). According to him, “we did not invent the TSA, we met it but before we came, it was haphazardly implemented with government having over 22000 accounts in various banks’’ He said government was paying heavy charges to banks and could not know how much money it had to allocate in terms of priority. “Between 2015 and today, N8.9 trillion has gone through the TSA and that has made possible for government to know the money it has at any given time and where to allocate it,” he added. He said the introduction of the whistle blowing policy had led to the recovery of N13.8 billion in tax evasion and additional recovery of N7.8 billion, 378 million dollars, and 27,200 pounds. Mohammed said that remittance from various revenue generating agencies of Government https://archivengr.com/buhari-has-been-able-to-manage-nigerias-resources-lai-mohammed/ had improved tremendously since the inception of the administration. He said the administration had revamped the economy with its social investment programme, the N-power, Conditional Cash Transfer and School feeding programme. `Under the N-power, we have employed over half a million unemployed graduate, under the conditional cash transfer, we pay a stipend of N5,000 to 297,000 most vulnerable households monthly,” he added. |
